Intraurban Spatiotemporal Variability Of Ambient Air Pollutants Across Metropolitan St. Louis, Li Du
Intraurban Spatiotemporal Variability Of Ambient Air Pollutants Across Metropolitan St. Louis, Li Du
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Ambient air monitoring networks have been established in the United States since the 1970s to comply with the Clean Air Act. The monitoring networks are primarily used to determine compliance but also provide substantive support to air quality management and air quality research including studies on health effects of air pollutants. The Roxana Air Quality Study (RAQS) was conducted at the fenceline of a petroleum refinery in Roxana, Illinois. In addition to providing insights into air pollutant impacts from the refinery, these measurements increased the St. Louis area monitoring network density for gaseous air toxics and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) …
Smoke Aerosol Characterization For Spacecraft Fire Detection Systems, Marit Elisabeth Meyer
Smoke Aerosol Characterization For Spacecraft Fire Detection Systems, Marit Elisabeth Meyer
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Appropriate design of fire detection systems requires knowledge of both the expected fire signature and the background aerosol levels. Terrestrial fire detection systems have been developed based on extensive study of terrestrial fires. Unfortunately there is no corresponding data set for spacecraft fires and consequently the fire detectors in current spacecraft were developed based upon terrestrial designs. There are a number of factors that affect the smoke particle size distribution in spacecraft fires. In low gravity, buoyant flow is negligible which causes particles to concentrate at the smoke source, increasing their residence time, and increasing the transport time to smoke …
Synthesis Of Clickable Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Derivatives For Fabrication Of Modular Microsphere-Based Scaffolds To Promote Vascularization, Peter Nguyen
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Vascularization plays an important role in supporting transplanted tissues and cells in tissue engineering applications. Most tissues require access to blood vessels for the delivery of oxygen and nutrients, as well as the removal of carbon dioxide and cellular waste products. Without an adequate blood supply, cells within tissue-engineered constructs and scaffolds lose viability and fail to perform their intended functions. The goal of this dissertation was to design scaffolds that can promote vascularization of biomaterial implants for biomedical applications. In order to accomplish this goal, clickable poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) derivatives were synthesized in order to fabricate modular microsphere-based scaffolds …

Optimal Battery Operations And Design Considering Capacity Fade Mechanisms, Bharatkumar Suthar
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Safely and capacity fade are the key issues that restrict the use of the lithium-ion battery for many applications. These issues are being tackled in a variety of ways. This dissertation focuses on using detailed continuum-level electrochemical models to study transport, kinetics, and mechanical processes in the lithium-ion batteries. These models can be used to quantify the effect of capacity fade mechanisms (side reactions and mechanical degradation) and improve the safety aspects of the lithium ion batteries. Three capacity-fade mechanisms—solid electrolyte interface side reaction, lithium-plating side reaction and mechanical degradation due to intercalation-induced stresses—are considered in the dissertation. Monitoring and …
Directed Differentiation And Characterization Of Spinal V3 Interneurons From Mouse Embryonic Stem Cells, Hao Xu
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Neuronal populations involved in locomotion controlling central pattern generators within the spinal cord hold great potential for spinal cord injury therapy. Spontaneous recovery in rodent models suggests that a population that can reorganize around an injury site could be useful for functional recovery therapeutics after spinal cord injury. The glutamatergic, commissural, long-extending V3 interneurons shown to balance locomotor rhythm regularity and robustness within central pattern generators in vivo are both an ideal population for spinal cord injury therapeutics and a vital population to study as a part of locomotor circuitry. Unfortunately, due to the scarcity of these cells in the …

Application Of Wray-Agarwal Model To Turbulent Flow In A 2d Lid-Driven Cavity And A 3d Lid-Driven Box, Hakop J. Nagapetyan
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis, various turbulence models are used for simulating internal vortical flow, both turbulent and laminar, with large recirculation by considering the flow in a 2-D lid-driven square cavity and a 3-D lid driven cubic box. The accuracy of the newly developed Wray-Agarwal (WA) one equation turbulence model is compared against two well-known industry standard turbulence models; the Spalart-Allmaras (SA) and the Shear-Stress-Transport (SST) k-ω models. The simulations are performed by numerically solving the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations in conjunction with WA, SA and SST k-ω models and comparing the results with the available experimental data and Large Eddy …

Software Metrics And Dashboard, Shilpika Shilpika, George K. Thiruvathukal, Saulo Aguiar, Konstantin Läufer, Nicholas J. Hayward
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Software metrics are a critical tool which provide continuous insight to products and processes and help build reliable software in mission critical environments. Using software metrics we can perform calculations that help assess the effectiveness of the underlying software or process. The two types of metrics relevant to our work is complexity metrics and in-process metrics. Complexity metrics tend to focus on intrinsic code properties like code complexity. In-process metrics focus on a higher-level view of software quality, measuring information that can provide insight into the underlying software development process.
Our aim is to develop and evaluate a metrics dashboard …
An Optimized Nlms Algorithm For Acoustic Echo Cancellation, Silviu Ciochina, Constantin Paleologu, Jacob Benesty, Steven L. Grant
An Optimized Nlms Algorithm For Acoustic Echo Cancellation, Silviu Ciochina, Constantin Paleologu, Jacob Benesty, Steven L. Grant
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In order to improve the overall performance of the normalized least-mean-square (NLMS) algorithm, there is the need to control its main parameters, i.e., the normalized step-size and regularization terms. In this context, the variable step-size and variable regularized versions of the NLMS algorithm are designed to address the conflicting requirement of fast convergence and low mis adjustment. In this paper, we propose an optimized NLMS algorithm for acoustic echo cancellation (AEC). This algorithm is based on a joint-optimization on both the normalized step-size and regularization parameters, in the context of a state variable model (similar to Kalman filtering). The simulation …

Optimization Of Blalock-Taussig Shunt And Anastomotic Geometry For Vascular Access Fistula Using A Genetic Algorithm, Guangyu Bao
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Blalock-Taussig (BT) shunts are used for defects that affect the flow of blood from the right ventricle, through the pulmonary artery, and to the lungs. Arteriovenous (AV) fistula is one type of vascular access which is a surgically created vein used to remove and return blood during hemodialysis. Plastic grafts used in the above two reconstructions may result in areas of non-physiologic flow in the grafts leading to risk of stenosis (blocked area) and thrombosis, which is the single major cause for access morbidity. The focus of this thesis is to study BT shunts and anastomoses models using Computational Fluid …
Entry Flow And Heat Transfer Of Laminar And Turbulent Forced Convection Of Nanofluids In A Pipe And A Channel, Yihe Huang
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
This thesis presents a numerical investigation of laminar and turbulent fluid flow and convective heat transfer of nanofluids in the entrance and fully developed regions of flow in a channel and a pipe. In recent years, nanofluids have attracted attention as promising heat transfer fluids in many industrial processes due to their high thermal conductivity. Nanofluids consist of a suspension of nanometer-sized particles of higher thermal conductivity in a liquid such as water. The thermal conductivity of nanoparticles is typically an order-of-magnitude higher than the base liquid, which results in a significant increase in the thermal performance of the nanofluid …

Crack free functionally graded material (FGM) Ti6Al4V-TiC has been fabricated by laser metal deposition (LMD) using TiC and Ti6Al4V powder which were premixed for different ratios. This study focuses on the influence of laser processing parameters and TiC compositional distribution on microstructure, Vickers hardness and phase. The microstructure is analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD) and hardness tests. Primary carbide, eutectic carbide and unmelted carbide are found in the deposit area. When laser power increased, the primary and secondary dendrite arm spacing increased. The laser power and scanning speed did not influence the Vickers hardness distribution significantly.

This work deals with the planning and fabrication of a functionally gradient copper-nickel composition via Laser Metal Deposition (LMD). Various compositions of copper and nickel were made by blending different weight percentages which were then sequentially deposited to fabricate functionally gradient copper-nickel thin-wall structures. Analyses were performed by sectioning the thin-wall samples for metallographic, hardness, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) studies. The fabrication was studied for identifying and corroborating the deposited compositions and their corresponding gradients. XRD analyses were performed to identify the crystal structure of the deposit. EDS analysis was instrumental in identifying the variation …

TiB-reinforced Ti alloy composites have been laser deposited with pre-alloyed Ti-6Al4V-1B powder. The microstructure of the as-deposited and heat treated composites have been characterized in detail using scanning electron microscope (SEM). A homogeneous dispersion of needle-like TiB precipitates is formed in the Ti-6Al-4V α/β matrix. TiB precipitates promote formation of small near equaxed α/β grain after β annealing process. The micro-hardness of the laser deposited composites increase 20-30% with 5 vol. % TiB precipitates compared to unreinforced Ti-6Al-4V deposits.

Effects Of Temperature On Aqueous Freeform Extrusion Fabrication, Jie Li, Ming-Chuan Leu, Greg Hilmas
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of temperature on ceramic parts produced by paste extrusion based additive manufacturing followed by sintering. A computer-controlled gantry system equipped with a piston extruder was used to extrude aqueous alumina paste. The system includes a temperature control subsystem that allows for freeform extrusion fabrication inside a low-temperature (<0°C) chamber. It can also be used for fabricating parts on a hot plate at ambient or higher temperatures (≥20°C). Test specimens were fabricated from aqueous aluminum pastes at -20°C in the low-temperature chamber and also on the hot plate at 40°C. The minimum angles achievable by these two processes for part fabrication, without use of support material, were compared. Also compared were the relative density and mechanical properties of the parts obtained after sintering. Microstructures were examined via scanning electron microscopy in order to obtain a deeper understanding of the effect of fabrication temperature.

Although implants made with bioactive glass have shown promising results for bone repair, their application in repairing load-bearing long bones is limited due to their low fracture toughness and fairly fast degradation response in vivo. In this paper, we describe our investigation of freeform extrusion fabrication of silicate based 13-93 bioactive glass scaffolds reinforced with titanium fibers. A composite paste was prepared with 13-93 bioactive glass filled with titanium fibers (~16 µm in diameter and aspect ratio of ~250) having a volume fraction of 0.4 vol. %. This paste was then extruded to fabricate scaffolds with an extrudate diameter …

Many researchers have tried to optimize the build direction of additively manufactured parts to minimize the vertical staircase effect. However, the horizontal staircase effect should also be considered when fully dense parts are to be fabricated. In this paper, part inaccuracy due to the horizontal staircase effect is considered in order to determine the optimal rastering orientation in building the part. An algorithm is developed to estimate this inaccuracy and a technique is proposed to minimize it. The effect of rastering orientation on staircase errors is examined, and the particle swarm optimization method is used to determine the optimum rastering …

Glass is a critical material for many scientific and engineering applications including optics, communications, electronics, and hermetic seals. Despite this technological relevance, there has been minimal research toward Additive Manufacturing (AM) of glass, particularly optically transparent glass. Additive Manufacturing of transparent glass offers potential advantages for lower processing costs for small production volumes, increased design freedom, and the ability to locally vary the optical properties of the part. Compared to common soda lime glass, fused quartz is better for AM since it has lower thermal expansion and higher index homogeneity. This paper presents a study of additive manufacturing of transparent …

Dc-Gain Layer-To-Layer Stability Criterion In Laser Metal Deposition Processes, Patrick M. Sammons, Douglas A. Bristow, Robert G. Landers
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In Laser Metal Deposition (LMD), a blown powder metal additive manufacturing process, functional metal parts are fabricated in a layer-by-layer fashion. In addition to the in-layer dynamics, which describe how the process evolves within a given layer, the additive-fabrication property of LMD creates a second set of dynamics which describe how the process evolves from layer-to-layer. While these dynamics, termed layer-to-layer dynamics, are coupled with both the in-layer dynamics and the process operating conditions, they are not widely considered in the modeling, process planning, or process control of LMD operations. Because of this, seemingly valid choices for process parameters can …
