Minimization Of Collateral Damage In Airdrops And Airstrikes, Steven P. Dillenburger Sep 2012

Minimization Of Collateral Damage In Airdrops And Airstrikes, Steven P. Dillenburger

Theses and Dissertations

Collateral damage presents a significant risk during air drops and airstrikes, risking citizens' lives and property, straining the relationship between the United States Air Force and host nations. This dissertation presents a methodology to determine the optimal location for making supply airdrops in order to minimize collateral damage while maintaining a high likelihood of successful recovery. A series of non-linear optimization algorithms is presented along with their relative success in finding the optimal location in the airdrop problem. Additionally, we present a quick algorithm for accurately creating the Pareto frontier in the multi-objective airstrike problem. We demonstrate the effect of …

Characterization Of Xylan Utilization And Discovery Of A New Endoxylanase In Thermoanaerobacterium Saccharolyticum Through Targeted Gene Deletions, Kara K. Podkaminer, Adam M. Guss, Heather L. Trajano, David A. Hogsett, Lee R. Lynd Sep 2012

Characterization Of Xylan Utilization And Discovery Of A New Endoxylanase In Thermoanaerobacterium Saccharolyticum Through Targeted Gene Deletions, Kara K. Podkaminer, Adam M. Guss, Heather L. Trajano, David A. Hogsett, Lee R. Lynd

Dartmouth Scholarship

The economical production of fuels and commodity chemicals from lignocellulose requires the utilization of both the cellulose and hemicellulose fractions. Xylanase enzymes allow greater utilization of hemicellulose while also increasing cellulose hydrolysis. Recent metabolic engineering efforts have resulted in a strain of Thermoanaerobacterium saccharolyticum that can convert C5 and C6 sugars, as well as insoluble xylan, into ethanol at high yield. To better understand the process of xylan solubilization in this organism, a series of targeted deletions were constructed in the homoethanologenic T. saccharolyticum strain M0355 to characterize xylan hydrolysis and xylose utilization in this organism. While the deletion of …

On Secrecy Rate Analysis Of Mimo Wiretap Channels Driven By Finite-Alphabet Input, Shafi Bashar, Zhi Ding, Chengshan Xiao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This work investigates the effect of finite-alphabet input constraint on the secrecy rate of a multi-antenna wiretap channel. Most existing works have characterized maximum achievable secrecy rate or secrecy capacity for single and multiple antenna systems based on Gaussian source signals and secrecy code. for practical considerations, we study the effect of finite discrete-constellation on the achievable secrecy rate of multiple-antenna wire-tap channels. Our proposed precoding scheme converts the underlying multi-antenna system into a bank of parallel channels. based on this precoding strategy, we develop a decentralized power allocation algorithm based on dual decomposition to maximize the achievable secrecy rate. …

Enhanced Methanol Oxidation And Co Tolerance Using Ceo2-Added Eggshell Membrane-Templated Pd Network Electrocatalyst, Qunwei Tang, Zhengping Mao, Shuguo Ma, Kevin Huang

Faculty Publications

Macroporous Pd and CeO2-added Pd network catalysts have been synthesized using eggshell membrane (ESM) as a template for enhanced methanol oxidation and CO tolerance. The microstructural characterization revealed a hierarchically ordered macroporous network of Pd reproducing the fibrous structure of ESM for a Pd-only catalyst, and a flower-like CeO2-decorated Pd morphological architecture for the CeO2-added Pd catalyst synthesized by a precipitation method. XRD patterns indicated Pd and CeO2 phases with good crystallinity. The cyclic voltammetry studies showed an enhanced electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation in acidic aqueous medium. Because of the preferential formation …

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

The objective of this study was to apply three-dimensional x-ray microtomographic imaging to understanding morphologies in the diphasic destabilized hydride system: MgH2 and LiBH4. Each of the single phase hydrides as well as two-phase mixtures at LiBH4:MgH2 ratios of 1:3, 1:1, and 2:1 were prepared by high energy ball milling for 5 minutes (with and without 4 mol % TiCl3 catalyst additions). Samples were imaged using computed microtomography in order to (i) establish measurement conditions leading to maximum absorption contrast between the two phases and (ii) determine interfacial volume. The optimal energy for measurement was determined to be 15 keV …

Improving Engineering Students’ Design Skills In A Project-Based Learning Course By Addressing Epistemological Issues, Gavin Duffy, Shannon Chance, Brian Bowe

Conference papers

A novice designer is prone to making premature decisions. Rather than explore issues and research information and options, he may quickly jump to posing solutions and view design as a linear, step-by-step process. Instead of testing a variety of ideas, a beginning designer often becomes mesmerized by his initial ideas. An experienced designer, on the other hand, is much more likely conduct research and delay making decisions until the challenge has been fully explored [1]. She uses a variety of techniques to generate ideas, test them, and see how they inter-relate, sees design as an iterative process, has a variety …

Effect Of Accessory Power Take-Off Variation On A Turbofan Engine Performance, Anis Faidi Sep 2012

Effect Of Accessory Power Take-Off Variation On A Turbofan Engine Performance, Anis Faidi

Theses and Dissertations

Engine fuel efficiency of aerospace vehicles can be reached by different techniques. One way to do that is to reduce aircraft subsystems power supply effects on the engine performance. Previous research work has showed that extracting bleed air from the high pressure compressor exit is more efficient than extracting the equivalent amount of energy from the low pressure spool shaft. A high bypass turbofan engine was modeled using the Numerical Propulsion System Simulation (NPSS). The baseline engine performance was evaluated at different flight conditions of Mach number and altitude. To better understand the effect of air bleed take-off and shaft …

Dynamic Field Test Of A Model Levee Founded On Peaty Organic Soil Using An Eccentric Mass Shaker, E. T. Reinert, S. J. Brandenberg, J. P. Stewart, R. E.S. Moss Sep 2012

Dynamic Field Test Of A Model Levee Founded On Peaty Organic Soil Using An Eccentric Mass Shaker, E. T. Reinert, S. J. Brandenberg, J. P. Stewart, R. E.S. Moss

Civil and Environmental Engineering

A dynamic field test of a model levee was performed to study the behavior of very soft and compressible peaty organic soils that commonly underlie levees in the Sacramento / San Joaquin Delta in northern California. This first-of-its-kind test applied dynamic loads to the levee/peat system using a large eccentric mass shaker mounted on the levee crest. Loads from the shaker and the inertia of the levee section are transmitted to the peaty organic soils as base shear stresses, and rotational demands that manifest as normal pressures at the embankment/peat interface. We seek to characterize the transmission of seismic energy …

Faculty Publications

Electrical properties of p-Ge1−ySny (y = 0.06%) grown on n-Si substrate were investigated through temperature-dependent Hall-effect measurements. It was found that there exists a degenerate parallel conducting layer in Ge1−ySny/Si and a second, deeper acceptor in addition to a shallow acceptor. This parallel conducting layer dominates the electrical properties of the Ge1−ySny layer below 50 K and also significantly affects those properties at higher temperatures. Additionally, a conductivity type conversion from p to n was observed around 370 K for this sample. A two-layer conducting model was used …

Primitivec-Adl: Primitive Component Architecture Description Language, Basel Magableh Sep 2012

Primitivec-Adl: Primitive Component Architecture Description Language, Basel Magableh

Articles

In this paper, we introduce an architecture descrip- tion language (ADL) for PCOMs (a context oriented component model). The language is described at three levels: (1) Building blocks (PCOMs context oriented components types) (2) Connec- tors, which connect components externally and internally, and (3) Architectural Configuration, which includes a full description of composition and decomposition mechanisms.

The contribution is designing ADL. That supports context- orinted component by providing new architecture elements, which fulfil the requirements of designing context oriented component based applications. Context oriented component is a behavioural unit composed of static parts and dynamic parts. A PCOMs component model …

Soft Microenvironments Promote The Early Neurogenic Differentiation But Not Self-Renewal Of Human Pluripotent Stem Cells, Albert Keung, Prashanth Asuri, Sanjay Kumar, David Schaffer Sep 2012

Soft Microenvironments Promote The Early Neurogenic Differentiation But Not Self-Renewal Of Human Pluripotent Stem Cells, Albert Keung, Prashanth Asuri, Sanjay Kumar, David Schaffer

Bioengineering

Human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) are of great interest in biology and medicine due to their ability to self-renew and differentiate into any adult or fetal cell type. Important efforts have identified biochemical factors, signaling pathways, and transcriptional networks that regulate hPSC biology. However, recent work investigating the effect of biophysical cues on mammalian cells and adult stem cells suggests that the mechanical properties of the microenvironment, such as stiffness, may also regulate hPSC behavior. While several studies have explored this mechanoregulation in mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs), it has been challenging to extrapolate these findings and thereby explore their …

Engineering Project Appraisal (2nd. Ed), Martin G. Rogers, Aidan Duffy Sep 2012

Engineering Project Appraisal (2nd. Ed), Martin G. Rogers, Aidan Duffy

Books/Book Chapters

In most cases of civil engineering development, a range of alternative schemes meeting project goals are feasible, so some form of evaluation must be carried out to select the most appropriate to take forward. Evaluation criteria usually include the economic, environmental and social contexts of a project as well as the engineering challenges, so engineers must be familiar with the processes and tools used.

The second edition of Engineering Project Appraisal equips students with the understanding and analytical tools to carry out effective appraisals of alternative development schemes, using both economic and non-economic criteria. The building blocks of economic appraisal …

Application Of Seawinds Scatterometer Data To The Study Of Antarctic Icebergs, Keith Mitchell Stuart Sep 2012

Application Of Seawinds Scatterometer Data To The Study Of Antarctic Icebergs, Keith Mitchell Stuart

Theses and Dissertations

Knowledge of iceberg location and size is important for safety reasons as well as for understanding many geophysical and biological processes. This dissertation analyzes large tabular icebergs in the Southern Ocean using the SeaWinds scatterometer. SeaWinds is a spaceborne radar designed to measure the microwave backscatter from the Earth's surface. Using resolution-enhancement techniques, backscatter measurements are processed into backscatter images in which icebergs can be observed. An iceberg detection methodology is formalized using daily scatterometer images. Radar profiles from common Antarctic scatterers are quantified and an iceberg detection methodology is formalized using daily scatterometer images. Iceberg positions are determined in …

Liquid Jet Impingement Experiments On Micro Rib And Cavity Patterned Superhydrophobic Surfaces In Both Cassie And Wenzel States, Michael G. Johnson Sep 2012

Liquid Jet Impingement Experiments On Micro Rib And Cavity Patterned Superhydrophobic Surfaces In Both Cassie And Wenzel States, Michael G. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Experiments were performed to characterize hydraulic jumps that form due to liquid jet impingement on superhydrophobic surfaces with alternating micro-ribs and cavities. If the surface is unimmersed, a surface tension based transition into droplets occurs, so a known depth of water was imposed downstream from the hydraulic jump to ensure the existence of a hydraulic jump. The surfaces are characterized by the cavity fraction, which is defined as the width of a cavity divided by the combined width of a cavity and an adjoining rib. Four different surface designs were studied, with respective cavity fractions of 0 (smooth surface), 0.5, …

Efficient Algorithms For Improving The Accuracy In Motifs Prediction, Jerlin C. Merlin Sep 2012

Efficient Algorithms For Improving The Accuracy In Motifs Prediction, Jerlin C. Merlin

Master's Theses

Analysis of sequence homology has always played a major role in the understanding of biological factors such as protein domain identification, gene product relationships, and gene function determination. Short contiguous protein sequences that are conserved across proteins provide important information about such factors, and are of at most 15 residues in length. These segments of proteins are known as minimotifs. Identifying minimotifs has been of much use in the formulation of the hypothesis about the biological functions that otherwise might be uncharacterized. Mechanisms of motif predictions such as Minimotif Miner are widely used for predicting minimotifs. However, due to the …

Incorporation Of Catalytic Dehydrogenation Into Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis To Lower Carbon Dioxide Emissions, Gerald P. Huffman

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Patents

A method for producing liquid fuels includes the steps of gasifying a starting material selected from a group consisting of coal, biomass, carbon nanotubes and mixtures thereof to produce a syngas, subjecting that syngas to Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) to produce a hyrdrocarbon product stream, separating that hydrocarbon product stream into C1-C4 hydrocarbons and C5+ hydrocarbons to be used as liquid fuels and subjecting the C1-C4 hydrocarbons to catalytic dehydrogenation (CDH) to produce hydrogen and carbon nanotubes. The hydrogen produced by CDH is recycled to be mixed with the syngas incident to the FTS reactor in order to raise the hydrogen …

Mimo Multichannel Beamforming In Rayleigh-Product Channels With Arbitrary-Power Co-Channel Interference And Noise, Yongpeng Wu, Shi Jin, Xiqi Gao, Chengshan Xiao, Matthew R. Mckay

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper investigates communication over multiple-input multiple-output Rayleigh-product channels in the presence of both co-channel interference and thermal noise. We first present exact expressions for the marginal ordered eigenvalue distributions of the channel Gram matrix when multichannel beamforming is employed, from which we obtain exact results on the outage probability on each eigenmode. Our results are applicable to an extensive class of multichannel systems with generic system configurations. for particular scenarios of single-input multiple-output, keyhole, and multiple-input single-output channels, simplified closed-form expressions for the asymptotic distributions of the non-zero eigenvalue of the channel Gram matrix are derived. These results indicate …

2012 Energy Justice Conference and Technology Exposition (September 17-18)

Co-sponsored with the Colorado European Union Center of Excellence and the Presidents Leadership Institute at the University of Colorado Boulder.

The ability to harness energy is fundamental to economic and social development. Worldwide, almost 3 billion people have little or no access to beneficial energy resources for cooking, heating, water sanitation, illumination, transportation, or basic mechanical needs. Energy poverty exacerbates ill health and economic hardship, and reduces educational opportunities, particularly for women and children. Specifically, access to efficient and affordable energy services is a prerequisite for achieving the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) relating to poverty eradication.

In response, the UN …
