[Accepted Article Manuscript Version (Postprint)] Track Me To Track Us: Leveraging Short Range Wireless Technologies For Enabling Energy Efficient Wi-Fi-Based Localization, Mohamed Abdellatif, Abderrahmen Mtibaa, Khaled Harras

Computer Science Faculty Works

Given the success of outdoor tracking via GPS and the rise of real-time context-aware services, users will soon rely on applications that require higher granularity indoor localization. This need is further manifested in countries like Qatar, where various social and business activities occur indoors. Wi-Fi-based indoor localization is one of the most researched techniques due to its ubiquitous deployment and acceptable accuracy for a wide range of applications. However, we do not witness such techniques widely deployed mainly due to their high demand on energy, which is a precious commodity in mobile devices. We propose an energy-efficient indoor localization system …

Tone-2 Tones Discrimination Task Comparing Audio And Haptics, Lorenzo Picinali, Christopher Feakes, Davide Andrea Mauro, Brian F. G. Katz

Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering Faculty Research

To investigating the capabilities of human beings to differentiate between tactile-vibratory stimuli with the same fundamental frequency but with different spectral content, this study concerns discrimination tasks comparing audio and haptic performances. Using an up-down 1 dB step adaptive procedure, the experimental protocol consists of measuring the discrimination threshold between a pure tone signal and a stimulus composed of two concurrent pure tones, changing the amplitude and frequency of the second tone. The task is performed employing exactly the same experimental apparatus (computer, AD-DA converters, amplifiers and drivers) for both audio and tactile modalities. The results show that it is …

Comparison Of Union And Non-Union Bids On Ohio School Facilities Commission Construction Projects, Alan Atalah Oct 2012

Comparison Of Union And Non-Union Bids On Ohio School Facilities Commission Construction Projects, Alan Atalah

Construction Management Faculty Publications

In 1997, the Ohio senate passed Senate Bill 102 which established the Ohio School Facilities Commission as a separate agency to oversee the rebuilding projects of the public schools in Ohio. To lower the construction cost, the bill exempted construction contractors from paying prevailing wages on these projects based on the hypothesis that this exemption would save the Ohio tax payer 10.7%. Many other studies concluded that these savings would range from 1.5 to 26%. The purpose of this research was to investigate this hypothesis through the statistical analysis of 8093 bids received for the schools’ construction from the years …

Staehle, Zeynep H Gümüş, Rajanikanth Vadigepalli, Gregory E Gonye, Carmen N Nichols, Babatunde A Ogunnaike, Jan B Hoek, James S Schwaber

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

BACKGROUND: Chronic alcohol exposure produces neuroadaptation, which increases the risk of cellular excitotoxicity and autonomic dysfunction during withdrawal. The temporal progression and regulation of the gene expression that contributes to this physiologic and behavioral phenotype is poorly understood early in the withdrawal period. Further, it is unexplored in the dorsal vagal complex (DVC), a brainstem autonomic regulatory structure.

METHODS: We use a quantitative polymerase chain reaction platform to precisely and simultaneously measure the expression of 145 neuromodulatory genes in more than 100 rat DVC samples from control, chronically alcohol-exposed, and withdrawn rats. To gain insight into the dynamic progression and …

Developing A Restorable Wetland Index For Rainwater Basin Wetlands In South-Central Nebraska: A Multi-Criteria Spatial Analysis, Zhenghong Tang, Xu Li, Nan Zhao, Ruopu Li, F. Edwin Harvey

Community and Regional Planning Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

It is always challenging for decision makers to prioritize wetland conservation programs at the landscape scale. This study employed a GIS-based multi-criteria spatial decision support tool that identified locations with the highest restoration potential for wetland conservation programs in the Rainwater Basin in south-central Nebraska. Five indicators were considered to assess wetland restoration potential: (1) Vegetation characteristics; (2) Soil characteristics; (3) Water volume released from hydrological modification of agricultural irrigation pits; (4) Topographical depression status; and (5) Habitat condition. The results suggested 192 (1.6% of the total) hydric soil footprints as the highest prioritized locations for future wetland restoration programs. …

Pedaling-Related Brain Activation In People Post-Stroke: An Fmri Study, Nutta-On Promjunyakul

Dissertations (1934 -)

This study aimed to enhance our understanding of supraspinal control of locomotion in stroke survivors and its relationship to locomotor impairment. We focused mainly on the locomotor component of walking, which involves rhythmic, reciprocal, flexion and extension movements of multiple joints in both legs. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to record human brain activity while pedaling was used as a model of locomotion. First, we examined the spatiotemporal characteristics of hemodynamic responses recorded with fMRI and found that they were different in stroke survivors and control subjects. However, these differences were not substantial enough to require altering the …

Quantitation And Identification Of Protein S-Nitrosylation: Implication For The Progression Of Alzheimer's Disease, Siyang Wang Oct 2012

Quantitation And Identification Of Protein S-Nitrosylation: Implication For The Progression Of Alzheimer's Disease, Siyang Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

Protein S-nitrosylation, the covalent modification of a cysteine sulfhydryl group by nitric oxide (NO), plays a critical role in post-translational modification (PTM) that regulates a large variety of cellular functions and signalling events. The nitrosylation state changes with oxidative damage and is involved in variety of cancers and neurodegeneration diseases.

Three technologies were developed for nitrosylated protein detection and identification. Capillary gel electrophoresis with laser induced fluorescence (CGE-LIF) detection was used for the detection and quantitation of nitrosylated proteins. A two-dimensional micro-electrophoresis (2D μ-CE) separations system was also built to detect nitrosylated proteins via poly (methylmethacrylate) microchips. Proteomics following nitrosylated …

Exploitation And Exploration Of Pcr In Microfluidic Systems With Gradient Temperature Environments, Ilija Pjescic Oct 2012

Exploitation And Exploration Of Pcr In Microfluidic Systems With Gradient Temperature Environments, Ilija Pjescic

Doctoral Dissertations

The main goal of the work was to establish a wholesome picture off all relevant processes for a sample-in, answer out genetic system and to integrate the whole process on a one step device from sample collection to final result. The genetic analysis process consists of ideally three steps: sample preparation, chemical reaction, and analysis. Each of the steps is different and requires a specific environment, where sample preparation might use additives, they might later interfere with the reaction itself or lead to misleading results in the analysis phase. It was found to be quite a challenging process to synchronize …

The Contribution Of Oxidative Stress In The Protein Damage And Dna Lesion In Alzheimer's Disease Neuropathology, Cheng Zhang Oct 2012

The Contribution Of Oxidative Stress In The Protein Damage And Dna Lesion In Alzheimer's Disease Neuropathology, Cheng Zhang

Doctoral Dissertations

Glutathione (GSH) plays an essential role in the intracellular antioxidant defense against the oxidant radicals, especially the ·OH radical. To understand the early and progressive cellular changes in Alzheimer's disease (AD) development, we investigated reduced glutathione/oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG) status in a double mutated AD transgenic mouse model (B6.Cg-Tg), which carries Swedish amyloid precursor protein mutation (APPswe) and exon 9 deletion of the PSEN1 gene. Likewise, S-glutathionylation (Pr-SSG) is a specific post-translational modification (PTM) of cysteine residues by the addition of glutathione. S-glutathionylated proteins induced by oxidative stress play an essential role in understanding the pathogenesis of the aging …

A Novel Microfluidic Enrichment Technique For Carbonylated Proteins, Bryant C. Hollins Oct 2012

A Novel Microfluidic Enrichment Technique For Carbonylated Proteins, Bryant C. Hollins

Doctoral Dissertations

Proteins are the building blocks of cells in living organisms, and are composed of amino acids. The expression of proteins is regulated by the processes of transcription and translation. Proteins undergo post-translational modifications in order to dictate their role physiologically within a cell.

Not all post-translational modifications are beneficial for the protein or the cell. One type of post-translational modification, called carbonylation, irreversibly places a carbonyl group onto an amino acid residue, most commonly proline, lysine, arginine, and threonine. This modification can have severe consequences physiologically, including loss of solubility, loss of function, and protein aggregation.

Carbonylated proteins have commonly …

A Band-Pass Filter Approach Within Molecular Dynamics For The Prediction Of Intrinsic Quality Factors Of Nanoresonators, Ajit K. Vallabhaneni, Xiulin Ruan, Jeff F. Rhoads, Jayathi Murthy Oct 2012

A Band-Pass Filter Approach Within Molecular Dynamics For The Prediction Of Intrinsic Quality Factors Of Nanoresonators, Ajit K. Vallabhaneni, Xiulin Ruan, Jeff F. Rhoads, Jayathi Murthy

Birck and NCN Publications

The temperature and frequency dependence of the flexural mode quality factors (Q) of doubly clamped single wall carbon nanotube resonators are calculated using classical molecular dynamics simulations. The validity of the various methods available in the literature for calculating Q based on the temporal response of the system during ring-down is discussed and the discrepancies associated with the methods are explained. A new approach based on band-pass filtering is proposed for calculating Q, which reveals classical temperature dependence (Q similar to T-1) in contrast to the previously reported results (Q similar to T-beta, 0 < beta < 1). It is shown that the Q estimated from the temporal response is in good agreement with the Q estimated from frequency response. This work also demonstrates that the proposed method is particularly advantageous when multiple modes are simultaneously excited within the linear regime. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. Cu2o And Au/Cu2o Particles: Surface Properties And Applications In Glucose Sensing, Yu-Ho Won, Lia A. Stanciu

Birck and NCN Publications

In this work we investigated the surface and facet-dependent catalytic properties of metal oxide particles as well as noble metal/metal oxide heterogeneous structures, with cuprous oxide (Cu2O) and Au/Cu2O being selected as model systems. As an example of application, we explored the potential of these materials in developing electrocatalytic devices. Cu2O particles were synthesized in various shapes, then used for testing their morphology-dependent electrochemical properties applied to the detection of glucose. While we did not attempt to obtain the best detection limit reported to date, the octahedral and hexapod Cu2O particles showed reasonable detection limits of 0.51 and 0.60 mM, …

Intelligent Shelter Allotment For Emergency Evacuation Planning: A Case Study Of Makkah, Kwangsoo Yang, Faizan Ur Rehman, Hatim Lahza, Saleh Basalamah, Shashi Shekhar, Arif Ghafoor

Cyber Center Technical Reports

Given maps of an evacuee population, shelter destinations and a transportation
network, the goal of intelligent shelter allotment (ISA) is to assign routes, exits and shelters to evacuees for quick and safe evacuation. ISA is societally important due to emergency planning and response applications in context of hazards such as floods, terrorism, fire, etc. ISA is challenging due to conflicts between movements of evacuee-groups heading to different shelters and transportation-network choke-points. State of the practice based on Nearest Exit or Shelter (NES) paradigm addresses the former challenge but not the latter one leading to load-imbalance and slow evacuation. Recent computational …

Oscillator-Based Neuronal Modeling For Seizure Progression Investigation And Seizure Control Strategy, Wu Chen Oct 2012

Oscillator-Based Neuronal Modeling For Seizure Progression Investigation And Seizure Control Strategy, Wu Chen

Doctoral Dissertations

The coupled oscillator model has previously been used for the simulation of neuronal activities in in vitro rat hippocampal slice seizure data and the evaluation of seizure suppression algorithms. Each model unit can be described as either an oscillator which can generate action potential spike trains without inputs, or a threshold-based unit. With the change of only one parameter, each unit can either be an oscillator or a threshold-based spiking unit. This would eliminate the need for a new set of equations for each type of unit. Previous analysis has suggested that long kernel duration and imbalance of inhibitory feedback …
