Functional Classification Of Skeletal Muscle Networks. Ii. Applications To Pathophysiology, Yu Wang, Jack Winters, Shankar Subramaniam
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
In our preceding companion paper (Wang Y, Winters J, Subramaniam S. J Appl Physiol. doi: 10.1152/japplphysiol.01514.2011), we used extensive expression profile data on normal human subjects, in combination with legacy knowledge to classify skeletal muscle function into four models, namely excitation-activation, mechanical, metabolic, and signaling-production model families. In this paper, we demonstrate how this classification can be applied to study two well-characterized myopathies: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Using skeletal muscle profile data from ALS and DMD patients compared with that from normal subjects, normal young in the case of DMD, we delineate molecular mechanisms …

A New Green's Function Formulation For Modeling Homogeneous Objects In Layered Medium, Yongpin P. Chen, Weng Cho Chew, Lijun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A new Green's function formulation is developed systematically for modeling general homogeneous (dielectric or magnetic) objects in a layered medium. The dyadic form of the Green's function is first derived based on the pilot vector potential approach. The matrix representation in the moment method implementation is then derived by applying integration by parts and vector identities. The line integral issue in the matrix representation is investigated, based on the continuity property of the propagation factor and the consistency of the primary term and the secondary term. The extinction theorem is then revisited in the inhomogeneous background and a surface integral …

Generalized Modal Expansion Of Electromagnetic Field In 2-D Bounded And Unbounded Media, Qi I. Dai, Weng Cho Chew, Yat Hei Lo, Yang G. Liu, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A generalized modal expansion theory is presented to investigate and illustrate the physics of wave-matter interaction within arbitrary two-dimensional (2-D) bounded and unbounded electromagnetic problems. We start with the bounded case where the field excited by any sources is expanded with a complete set of biorthogonal eigenmodes. In regard to non-Hermitian or nonreciprocal problems, an auxiliary system is constructed to seek for the modal-expansion solution. We arrive at the unbounded case when the boundary tends to infinity or is replaced by the perfectly matched layer (PML). Modes are approximately categorized into two types: trapped modes and radiation modes, which respond …

Development Of A Ground Based Remote Sensing Approach For Direct Evaluation Of Aerosol-Cloud Interaction, Bomidi Lakshmi Madhavan, Yuzhe He, Yonghua Wu, Barry Gross, Fred Moshary, Samir Ahmed
Publications and Research
The possible interaction and modification of cloud properties due to aerosols is one of the most poorly understood mechanisms within climate studies, resulting in the most significant uncertainty as regards radiation budgeting. In this study, we explore direct ground based remote sensing methods to assess the Aerosol-Cloud Indirect Effect directly, as space-borne retrievals are not directly suitable for simultaneous aerosol/cloud retrievals. To illustrate some of these difficulties, a statistical assessment of existing multispectral imagers on geostationary (e.g., GOES)/Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite retrievals of the Cloud Droplet Effective Radius (Reff) showed significant biases especially at larger solar zenith angles, …

Birck and NCN Publications
Topological insulator (TI) materials such as Bi2Te3 and Bi2Se3 have attracted strong recent interests. Large scale, high quality TI thin films are important for developing TI-based device applications. In this work, structural and electronic properties of Bi2Te3 thin films deposited by metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) on GaAs (001) substrates were characterized via x-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and electronic transport measurements. The characteristic topological surface states with a single Dirac cone have been clearly revealed in the electronic band structure measured by ARPES, confirming the TI nature of the MOCVD Bi2Te3 films. Resistivity and …

Integration Of Accounting-Based And Option-Based Models To Predict Construction Contractor Default, Lung-Ken Tsai, Hui-Ping Tserng, Hsien-Hsing Liao, Po-Cheng Chen, Wen-Pei Wang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper aims to predict construction contractor default, which is excluded by most extant studies, due to the distinct characteristics of construction industry. Default predicting models developed in past literatures are mostly built by accounting information, yet accounting sheets have innate flaws. To calculate default probability, several recent studies applied the option pricing theory, which presumes that the stock market is efficient. This presumption isn't always true in real life. In this paper, a hybrid model is proposed. It combines information from both models by inputting the default probability from the option-based model into the accounting-based model. As the measure …

An Excited System Design For The Maximum Output Of Induction Generator Based On Vector Control, Ding-Tsair Su, Ying-Shing Shiao, Koan-Yuh Chang, Wen-Jer Chang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In this paper, without using the mechanical speed regulator, we propose a scheme that can control the output power of an induction generator by controlling the excited current. To attain this goal, an inverter is designed as a current controlled source, to supply an excited current for the induction generator. Furthermore, using the dq axes theory, a vector controller is designed by a digital signal processor (DSP) for controlling the inverter which supplies excited current appropriately in accordance with the wind speed to regulate the induction generator output power. Finally, the experimental results have shown good performances of the proposed …

A Partition Dummy Sequence Insertion Papr Reduction Method Of The Ofdm System, Chi-Min Li, Jia-Chyi Wu, Chao-Chin Tseng
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) technique has been widely adopted in many wireless communication systems due to its high data-rate transmission ability and robustness to the multipath fading channel. One major drawback of the OFDM signal is the high peak-toaverage power ratio (PAPR) problem. The high PAPR results in the in-band distortion and out-of-band radiation when the OFDM signal is fed into a nonlinear power amplifier (PA). In this paper, we propose a partition dummy sequence insertion (PDSI) method to reduce the PAPR problem. Simulation results of the PAPR reduction and bit error rate (BER) performance for the proposed method …

Port Management Improvement Strategies Based On Simulation Model, Wen-Chih Huang, Tu-Cheng Kuo, Ching-Tsyr Wu, Cheng-Chen Kuo
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Management performance of container terminal is an important factor of port competitiveness. In the past, ports had often increased performance by expanding the number of berths and equipment. However, recent global recession has significantly dampened the growth of the international trade. Thus, port authority must seek effective utilization of the capacities of its container terminals. Most ocean carriers in the Port of Kaohsiung in Taiwan rent multiple berths that are often dispersed to different container terminals, resulting in inefficient handling. Establishing terminal operators to optimize berth assignment may resolve this problem. The objective of this research is to construct a …

Performance Comparison Of The Stbc-Ofdm Decoders In A Fast Fading Channel, Chi-Min Li, Guo-Wei Li, Han-Yi Liu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In a fast fading channel, the orthogonality of the two consecutive STBC-OFDM symbols will be destroyed and the received signals can not be perfectly separated. As a result, the bit error rate (BER) performance will be degraded seriously. In this paper, we analyze several co-channel interference (CCI) cancellation decoders for the STBC-OFDM in a fast fading channel including the Alamouti method, SIC method, ML method, DMLD method, and a proposed DZFD method. The proposed DZFD method has the advantage of reducing the computational complexity for the DMLD method. We also conduct the outdoor channel measurements to verify the CCI cancellation …

Effects Of Non-Newtonian Couple Stresses On The Dynamic Characteristics Of Wide Rayleigh Step Slider Bearings, Jaw-Ren Lin, Li-Ming Chu, Wei-Liang Liaw
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
To provide more information in fluid-film lubricated bearings, the effects of non-Newtonian couple stresses on the dynamic characteristics of Rayleigh step slider bearings have been presented in this paper. According to the results, the effects of non-Newtonian couple stresses signify an improvement in the bearing characteristics. Comparing with the Newtonian-lubricant Rayleigh step bearing, the nonNewtonian couple stress effects provide an increase in the steady load-carrying capacity, the dynamic stiffness coefficient and the dynamic damping coefficient, as well as a reduction in the steady volume flow rate required. In order to guide the use of the present study, a numerical example …

Early evaluation of new drug entities for their potential to cause mitochondrial dysfunction is becoming an important task for drug development. Multi-parametric high-content screening (mp-HCS) of mitochondrial toxicity holds promise as a lead in-vitro strategy for drug testing and safety evaluations. In this study, we have developed a mp-HCS and multi-parametric data analysis scheme for assessing cell responses to induced mitochondrial perturbation. The mp-HCS measurements are shown to be robust enough to allow for quantitative comparison of biological systems with different metabolic pathways simulated by alteration of growth media. Substitution of medium glucose for galactose sensitized cells to drug action …

Behavior Of Regular Triangular Joints Under Cyclic Shearing, Shuh-Gi Chern, Tsu-Chiang Cheng, Wen-Ya Chen
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Synthetic regular triangular joints made of gypsum plaster were cyclicly sheared to measure asperity degradation and mathematical behavior of regular triangular joints. Laboratory cyclic shear tests were conducted for three joint types under three different normal stresses. Asperity degradation and shear strength of joints were found to be a function of joint roughness, normal stress, shearing displacement and number of loading cycles. Based on the experimental results, mathematical models were developed for evaluation of shear strength in cyclic loading conditions. Comparison of the test results with that of the proposed model, it was found a good agreement was observed.

Free Vibration Analysis Of A Hybrid Beam Composed Of Multiple Elastic Beam Segments And Elastic-Supported Rigid Bodies, Hsien-Yuan Lin, Chin-Yu Wang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper aims at presenting a method to determine the “exact” natural frequencies and mode shapes of a hybrid beam composed of multiple elastic beam segments and multiple rigid bodies with each rigid body connected with two adjacent elastic beam segments. Furthermore, each rigid body has its own mass and rotary inertia, and is supported by a translational spring and/or a rotational spring. First, based on the equations of the continuity of deformations and the equilibrium of moments and forces for each of the intermediate rigid bodies and boundary conditions, the coefficient matrices of the entire hybrid beam are derived. …

Optimal Dynamic Temporal-Spatial Paramter Inversion Methods For The Marine Integrated Element Water Quality Model Using A Data-Driven Neural Network, Ming-Chang Li, Shu-Xiu Liang, Zhao-Chen Sun, Guang-Yu Zhang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Certain marine water quality or ecosystem model parameters vary in space and time because of different plankton taxonomic compositions over a large domain. The same parameter vectors can result in suboptimal calibration. In the present paper, a data-driven model based on an artificial neural network is developed to inverse the values of model parameters dynamically. All training data used are calculated using numerical water quality models from the results of multiparameter matching design cases such that physical properties are not disturbed. The aim is to determine the relationship between the model parameters and the pollution concentration values of interior stations. …

The balance between excitation and inhibition is considered to be of significant importance for neural computation and cognitive function. Excitatory and inhibitory functional connectivity in intact cortical neuronal networks in wakefulness and graded levels of anesthesia has not been systematically investigated. We compared monosynaptic excitatory and inhibitory spike transmission probabilities using pairwise cross-correlogram (CCG) analysis. Spikes were measured at 64 sites in the visual cortex of rats with chronically implanted microelectrode arrays during wakefulness and three levels of anesthesia produced by desflurane. Anesthesia decreased the number of active units, the number of functional connections, and the strength of excitatory connections. …
Wcet Optimizations And Architectural Support For Hard Real-Time Systems, Yiqiang Ding
Wcet Optimizations And Architectural Support For Hard Real-Time Systems, Yiqiang Ding
Theses and Dissertations
As time predictability is critical to hard real-time systems, it is not only necessary to accurately estimate the worst-case execution time (WCET) of the real-time tasks but also desirable to improve either the WCET of the tasks or time predictability of the system, because the real-time tasks with lower WCETs are easy to schedule and more likely to meat their deadlines. As a real-time system is an integration of software and hardware, the optimization can be achieved through two ways: software optimization and time-predictable architectural support. In terms of software optimization, we fi rst propose a loop-based instruction prefetching approach …

Empirical research in the last decade revealed that astrocytes can respond to neurotransmitters with Ca2+ elevations and generate feedback signals to neurons which modulate synaptic transmission and neuronal excitability. This discovery changed our basic understanding of brain function and provided new perspectives for how astrocytes can participate not only to information processing, but also to the genesis of brain disorders, such as epilepsy. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures that can arise focally at restricted areas and propagate throughout the brain. Studies in brain slice models suggest that astrocytes contribute to epileptiform activity by increasing neuronal excitability …
Force Optimization And Flow Field Characterization From A Flapping Wing Mechanism, Nathaniel Stephen Naegle
Force Optimization And Flow Field Characterization From A Flapping Wing Mechanism, Nathaniel Stephen Naegle
Theses and Dissertations
Flapping flight shows promise for micro air vehicle design because flapping wings provide superior aerodynamic performance than that of fixed wings and rotors at low Reynolds numbers. In these flight regimes, unsteady effects become increasingly important. This thesis explores some of the unsteady effects that provide additional lift to flapping wings through an experiment-based optimization of the kinematics of a flapping wing mechanism in a water tunnel. The mechanism wings and flow environment were scaled to simulate the flight of the hawkmoth (Manduca sexta) at hovering or near-hovering speeds. The optimization was repeated using rigid and flexible wings …
