Modeling Of Dynamics Of Gyroscopic Systems, Siddharth Sharma Jan 2012

Modeling Of Dynamics Of Gyroscopic Systems, Siddharth Sharma

LSU Master's Theses

The amplitude of vibrations of a rotating system operating near or at its critical speed grows without bound. This poses a serious problem for the rotating machinery industry from the perspective of design, maintenance, vibration troubleshooting and stability of the rotating equipments.

In this thesis, we wish to develop an exact method of analysis for the system of a mass-less symmetrical shaft rotating in symmetrical bearings (SSSB) with finite displacement at bearing end. The method so developed is expected to be extended to the SSSB model of a shaft having mass. The stability analysis is performed for both the systems. …

Differential Gene Expression In A Louisiana Strain Of Microalgae, John Joseph Tate Jan 2012

Differential Gene Expression In A Louisiana Strain Of Microalgae, John Joseph Tate

LSU Master's Theses

Considerable interest in alternative energy has stimulated research in biofuels, particularly microalgal biofuels. In particular, strains of algae that accumulate lipids to be used for biofuels must be adapted to outdoor growth and resistant to invasive species. Differential gene expression in a Louisiana algae/cyanobacteria co-culture consisting of approximately 97% Chlorella vulgaris and 3% Leptolyngbya sp. possessing these traits was examined. Possible reasons for the enhanced growth of the co-culture relative to a Chlorella monoculture were reviewed, including cyanobacterial symbiosis and chemicals produced by cyanobacteria or bacteria that could influence the growth of Chlorella. The co-culture and Chlorella monoculture were cultivated …

Bacterial Dehalogenation Of Mixtures Of 1,2-Dichloroethane, 1,2-Dichloropropane, And 1,1,2-Trichloroethane By Dehalogenimonas, Jacob Laddye Dillehay Jan 2012

Bacterial Dehalogenation Of Mixtures Of 1,2-Dichloroethane, 1,2-Dichloropropane, And 1,1,2-Trichloroethane By Dehalogenimonas, Jacob Laddye Dillehay

LSU Master's Theses

The goal of the research presented here was to assess the ability of two bacterial strains, Dehalogenimonas lykanthroporepellens BL-DC-9T and Dehalogenimonas strain IP3-3, to reductively dehalogenate four contaminant mixtures comprised of combinations of the chlorinated solvents 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA), 1,2-dichloropropane (1,2-DCP), and 1,1,2-trichloroethane (1,1,2-TCA). Both of these bacteria were first isolated from contaminated groundwater at the PetroProcessors of Louisiana, Inc. Superfund site located near Baton Rouge, LA and are of interest because of their novel abilities to transform halogenated alkanes. In previous work (Yan et al., 2009, Bowman et al., 2012), it was demonstrated that both strain IP3-3 and D. lykanthroporepellens …

Plasmonic Devices For Manipulating Light At The Nanoscale: Slow-Light Waveguides And Compact Couplers, Yin Huang Jan 2012

Plasmonic Devices For Manipulating Light At The Nanoscale: Slow-Light Waveguides And Compact Couplers, Yin Huang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, I explore new plasmonic structures and devices for manipulating light at the nanoscale: slow-light waveguides and compact couplers. I first introduce a plasmonic waveguide system, based on a plasmonic analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), which supports a subwavelength slow-light mode, and exhibits a small group velocity dispersion. The system consists of a periodic array of two metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) stub resonators side-coupled to a MDM waveguide. Decreasing the frequency spacing between the two resonances increases the slowdown factor and decreases the bandwidth of the slow-light band. I also show that there is a trade-off between the slowdown …

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have found extensive applications in the field of Civil Engineering due to their advantageous properties such as high strength-to-weight ratio and high corrosion resistance. This study presents a simple and efficient frame finite element (FE) able to accurately estimate the load-carrying capacity and ductility of reinforced concrete (RC) circular columns confined with externally bonded fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) plates and/or sheets. The proposed FE considers distributed plasticity with fiber-discretization of the cross-sections in the context of a force-based (FB) formulation. The element is able to model collapse due to concrete crushing, reinforcement steel yielding, and …

Bucky Gel Actuator For Morphing Applications, Ali Kadkhoda Ghamsari Jan 2012

Bucky Gel Actuator For Morphing Applications, Ali Kadkhoda Ghamsari

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Since the demonstration of Bucky Gel Actuator (BGA) in 2005, a great deal of effort has been exerted to develop novel applications for electro-active morphing materials. Three-layered bimorph nanocomposite has become an excellent candidate for morphing applications since it can be easily fabricated, operated in air, and driven with few volts. There has been limited published study on the mechanical properties of BGA. In this study, the effect of three parameters: layer thickness, carbon nanotube type, and weight fraction of components, on the mechanical properties was investigated. Samples were characterized via nano-indentation and DMA. It was found that BGA composed …

Biologically Dominated Engineered Coastal Breakwaters, Jon David Risinger Jan 2012

Biologically Dominated Engineered Coastal Breakwaters, Jon David Risinger

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Coastal land loss in Louisiana is occurring at astounding rates. New technologies for shoreline protection are needed that incorporate traditional engineering designs with natural systems (e.g., oyster reefs). Under optimal environmental conditions eastern Oysters (Crassotrea virginica) can biologically dominate artificial concrete reef structures used as coastal breakwaters within the intertidal zone. These reefs can also serve as oyster broodstock sanctuaries providing a nexus to the public oyster grounds benefiting the aquaculture industry. The use of biologically dominated, engineered breakwaters may provide a viable solution to coastal restoration and shoreline protection challenges. Biologically dominated coastal breakwaters can be integrated into coastal …

Multifunctional Carbon/Epoxy Glass Microballons Nanocomposite, Ephraim Fentahun Zegeye Jan 2012

Multifunctional Carbon/Epoxy Glass Microballons Nanocomposite, Ephraim Fentahun Zegeye

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Glass microballoons have high strength, low thermal and electrical properties, and provide closed cell porosity to reduce the density of composites. On the other hand, filamentous carbon nanostructures have excellent mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties that make them naturally multifunctional. This work presents a method of developing low-density multifunctional nanocomposites utilizing glass microballoons and carbon nanostructures. Two different approaches are investigated. In the first approach, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are used as a filler material to fabricate nanocomposites containing glass microballoons (CNT-syntactic foams). The weight percent of CNTs is varied from 0 to 0.8 wt%. In this method, CNTs were grown …

Wireless communication encompasses cellular telephony systems (mobile communication), wireless sensor networks, satellite communication systems and many other applications. Studies relevant to wireless communication deal with maintaining reliable and efficient exchange of information between the transmitter and receiver over a wireless channel. The most practical approach to facilitate reliable communication is using channel coding. In this dissertation we propose novel coding and decoding approaches for practical wireless systems. These approaches include variable-rate convolutional encoder, modified turbo decoder for local content in Single-Frequency Networks, and blind encoder parameter estimation for turbo codes. On the other hand, energy efficiency is major performance issue …

Pdms Based Waveguides For Microfluidics And Eocb, Weiping Qiu Jan 2012

Pdms Based Waveguides For Microfluidics And Eocb, Weiping Qiu

Due to the low cost, fast and ease of molding, PDMS has become one of the most popular materials for microfluidics devices, bioMEMS applications. Meanwhile, the integration of different functional components on to one single chip (or Lab on a Chip) is the dream for many scientists and engineers in the related area. In addition to the necessary mechanical components for accommodating the reactions, such as pumps, valves, mixers and so on, optical components such as waveguides, lens, interferers are all desired to be lumped into such a system.

The waveguide for such a system requires the material to have …

Robust Local Search For Solving Rcpsp/Max With Durational Uncertainty, Na Fu, Hoong Chuin Lau, Pradeep Varakantham, Fei Xiao Jan 2012

Robust Local Search For Solving Rcpsp/Max With Durational Uncertainty, Na Fu, Hoong Chuin Lau, Pradeep Varakantham, Fei Xiao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Scheduling problems in manufacturing, logistics and project management have frequently been modeled using the framework of Resource Constrained Project Scheduling Problems with minimum and maximum time lags (RCPSP/max). Due to the importance of these problems, providing scalable solution schedules for RCPSP/max problems is a topic of extensive research. However, all existing methods for solving RCPSP/max assume that durations of activities are known with certainty, an assumption that does not hold in real world scheduling problems where unexpected external events such as manpower availability, weather changes, etc. lead to delays or advances in completion of activities. Thus, in this paper, our …

Simultaneous Camera Pose And Correspondence Estimation With Motion Coherence, Wen-Yan Lin, Loong-Fah Cheong, Ping Tan, Guo Dong, Siying Liu Jan 2012

Simultaneous Camera Pose And Correspondence Estimation With Motion Coherence, Wen-Yan Lin, Loong-Fah Cheong, Ping Tan, Guo Dong, Siying Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Traditionally, the camera pose recovery problem has been formulated as one of estimating the optimal camera pose given a set of point correspondences. This critically depends on the accuracy of the point correspondences and would have problems in dealing with ambiguous features such as edge contours and high visual clutter. Joint estimation of camera pose and correspondence attempts to improve performance by explicitly acknowledging the chicken and egg nature of the pose and correspondence problem. However, such joint approaches for the two-view problem are still few and even then, they face problems when scenes contain largely edge cues with few …

Robust Distributed Scheduling Via Time Period Aggregation, Shih-Fen Cheng, John Tajan, Hoong Chuin Lau Jan 2012

Robust Distributed Scheduling Via Time Period Aggregation, Shih-Fen Cheng, John Tajan, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we evaluate whether the robustness of a market mechanism that allocates complementary resources could be improved through the aggregation of time periods in which resources are consumed. In particular, we study a multi-round combinatorial auction that is built on a general equilibrium framework. We adopt the general equilibrium framework and the particular combinatorial auction design from the literature, and we investigate the benefits and the limitation of time-period aggregation when demand-side uncertainties are introduced. By using simulation experiments on a real-life resource allocation problem from a container port, we show that, under stochastic conditions, the performance variation …

The Reduction Of Storm Surge By Vegetation Canopies: Three-Dimensional Simulations, Y. Peter Sheng, Andrew Lapetina, Gangfeng Ma Jan 2012

The Reduction Of Storm Surge By Vegetation Canopies: Three-Dimensional Simulations, Y. Peter Sheng, Andrew Lapetina, Gangfeng Ma

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Significant buffering of storm surges by vegetation canopies has been suggested by limited observations and simple numerical studies, particularly following recent Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma. Here we simulate storm surge and inundation over idealized topographies using a three-dimensional vegetation-resolving storm surge model coupled to a shallow water wave model and show that a sufficiently wide and tall vegetation canopy reduces inundation on land by 5 to 40 percent, depending upon various storm and canopy parameters. Effectiveness of the vegetation in dissipating storm surge and inundation depends on the intensity and forward speed of the hurricane, as well as the …

Characterizing Metal-Insulator-Transition (Mit) Phase Change Materials (Pcm) For Rf And Dc Micro-Switching Elements, Brent L. Danner, Ronald A. Coutu Jr.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Metal-insulator transition (MIT) phase-change materials (PCM) are material compounds that have the ability to be either conductors or insulators depending on external stimuli. A micromachined test structure for applying external electric fields across MIT wire segments was designed and fabricated. Using this novel test structure, Germanium Telluride (GeTe) and Vanadium Oxide (VOx) were successfully transitioned from a conductor to an insulator. The resistivity of the GeTe wire segments increased three to five orders of magnitude with ∼40 V applied to the parallel plates of the test structure. The VOx wires exhibited an order of magnitude transition in resistivity with ∼20 …

Continuous Time-Varying Biasing Approach For Spectrally Tunable Infrared Detectors, Woo-Yong Jang, Majeed M. Hayat, Payman Zarkesh-Ha, Sanjay Krishna Jan 2012

Continuous Time-Varying Biasing Approach For Spectrally Tunable Infrared Detectors, Woo-Yong Jang, Majeed M. Hayat, Payman Zarkesh-Ha, Sanjay Krishna

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In a recently demonstrated algorithmic spectral-tuning technique by Jang et al. [Opt. Express 19, 19454-19472, (2011)], the reconstruction of an object’s emissivity at an arbitrarily specified spectral window of interest in the long-wave infrared region was achieved. The technique relied upon forming a weighted superposition of a series of photocurrents from a quantum dots-in-a-well (DWELL) photodetector operated at discrete static biases that were applied serially. Here, the technique is generalized such that a continuously varying biasing voltage is employed over an extended acquisition time, in place using a series of fixed biases over each sub-acquisition time, which totally …

A New Ensemble Learning Method For Temporal Pattern Identification, Wenjing Zhang, Xin Feng Jan 2012

A New Ensemble Learning Method For Temporal Pattern Identification, Wenjing Zhang, Xin Feng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper we present a method for identification of temporal patterns predictive of significant events in a dynamic data system. A new hybrid model using Reconstructed Phase Space (MRPS) and Hidden Markov Model (HMM) is applied to identify temporal patterns. This method constructs phase space embedding by using individual embedding of each variable sequences. We also employ Hidden Markov Models (HMM) to the multivariate sequence data to categorize multi-dimensional data into three states, e.g. normal, patterns and events. A support vector machine optimization method is used to search an optimal classifier to identify temporal patterns that are predictive of …

The geoelectrical sections image the metamorphic carbonates which exhibit a highly irregular relief. At the central part of the plateau the thickness of post-Mesozoic deposits (terra rossa, clays, sands and gravels) ranges from 40-130 m. A 3D resistivity image was generated by inverting resistivity data collected on a grid to the south …

Multistable Shape-Shifting Surfaces (Mssss), Paul Joseph Montalbano Jan 2012

Multistable Shape-Shifting Surfaces (Mssss), Paul Joseph Montalbano

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This paper presents designs for Multistable Shape-Shifting Surfaces (MSSS) by introducing bistability into the Shape-Shifting Surface (SSS). SSSs are defined as surfaces that retain their effectiveness as a physical barrier while undergoing changes in shape. The addition of bistability to the SSS gives the surface multiple distinct positions in which it remains when shifted to, i.e. by designing bistability into a single SSS link, the SSS unit cell can change into multiple shapes, and stabilize within the resulting shape, while maintaining integrity against various forms of external assaults normal to its surface. Planar stable configurations of the unit cell include, …

Encapsulation Of High Temperature Phase Change Materials For Thermal Energy Storage, Rupa Nath Jan 2012

Encapsulation Of High Temperature Phase Change Materials For Thermal Energy Storage, Rupa Nath

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Thermal energy storage is a major contributor to bridge the gap between energy demand (consumption) and energy production (supply) by concentrating solar power. The utilization of high latent heat storage capability of phase change materials is one of the keys to an efficient way to store thermal energy. However, some of the limitations of the existing technology are the high volumetric expansion and low thermal conductivity of phase change materials (PCMs), low energy density, low operation temperatures and high cost. The present work deals with encapsulated PCM system, which operates at temperatures above 500°C and takes advantage of the heat …

Volume-Phase Transitions In Responsive Photo-Cross-Linked Polymer Network Films, Leena Patra Jan 2012

Volume-Phase Transitions In Responsive Photo-Cross-Linked Polymer Network Films, Leena Patra

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The overall thrust of this project is to gain an insight into a class of surface-tethered cross-linked thin films of poly(N-alkylacrylamides) that display a lower critical solution temperature (LCST).The structure of the alkyl group and the modification of the amide groups determine the LCST and resultant volume-phase transition behavior. The aim of this study involves synthesis and characterization of thin films and to correlate the volume-transition behavior to the structure of the alkyl group. For better understanding the volume-transition behavior, the polymer films are perturbed by the Hofmeister salt series to examine trends between different alkyl groups. While most of …

Field And Laboratory Comparison Of The Hydraulic Performance Of Two Ceramic Pot Water Filters, Duncan Peabody Jan 2012

Field And Laboratory Comparison Of The Hydraulic Performance Of Two Ceramic Pot Water Filters, Duncan Peabody

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Currently 884 million people worldwide are living without access to an improved source of drinking water (WHO/UNICEF, 2011). Piped-water on premises is the ultimate goal of World Health Organization (WHO) due to the ability to treat all of the water and distribute it safely in pressurized pipes. However, Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage (HWTS) is an option for improving the quality of drinking water where that infrastructure is not yet developed, especially where there is a risk of recontamination between point of collection and point of use (Clasen, 2006).

This study analyzed one such HWTS, the ceramic pot water …

Estimation Of The Impact Of Single Airport And Multi-Airport System Delay On The National Airspace System Using Multivariate Simultaneous Models, Nagesh Nayak Jan 2012

Estimation Of The Impact Of Single Airport And Multi-Airport System Delay On The National Airspace System Using Multivariate Simultaneous Models, Nagesh Nayak

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Airline delays lead to a tremendous loss of time and resources and cost billions of dollars every year in the United States (U.S.). At certain times, individual airports become bottlenecks within the National Airspace System (NAS). To explore solutions for reducing the delay, it is essential to understand factors causing flight delay and its impact on airports in the NAS. Major causal factors of flight delay at airports include over-scheduling, en-route convective weather, reduced ceiling and visibility around airports, and upstream delay propagation. Delay at one airport can be passed on to other airports in the NAS, in another word, …

Cell Adhesion And Migration On Ndga Cross-Linked Fibrillar Collagen Matrices For Tendon Tissue Engineering, Ana Ysabel Rioja Jan 2012

Cell Adhesion And Migration On Ndga Cross-Linked Fibrillar Collagen Matrices For Tendon Tissue Engineering, Ana Ysabel Rioja

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Tendons, essential tissues that connect muscles to bones, are susceptible to rupture/degeneration due to their continuous use for enabling movement. Often surgical intervention is required to repair the tendon; relieving the pain and fixing the limited mobility that occurs from the damage. Unfortunately, post-surgery immobilization techniques required to restore tendon properties frequently lead to scar formation and reduced tendon range of motion. Our ultimate goal is to create an optimal tendon prosthetic that can stabilize the damaged muscle-bone connection and then be remodeled by resident cells from the surrounding tissues over time to ensure long-term function. To achieve this, we …

Macroencapsulation Of Phase Change Materials For Thermal Energy Storage, Swetha Pendyala Jan 2012

Macroencapsulation Of Phase Change Materials For Thermal Energy Storage, Swetha Pendyala

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The use of a latent heat storage system using phase change materials (PCMs) is an effective way of storing thermal energy. Latent heat storage enables high-energy storage density which reduces the footprint of the system and the cost. However, PCMs have very low thermal conductivities making them unsuitable for large-scale use without enhancing the effective thermal conductivity. In order to address, the low thermal conductivity of the PCMs, macroencapsulation of PCMs has been adopted as an effective technique. The macroencapsulation not only provides a self-supporting structure of PCM and separates the PCM from thermal fluids but also enhances the heat …

A Statically Balanced Shape-Shifting Surface, Joseph Eugene Pishnery Jan 2012

A Statically Balanced Shape-Shifting Surface, Joseph Eugene Pishnery

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a concept for producing a Statically Balanced Shape-Shifting Surface (SB-SSS). In this context, an SB-SSS is a surface that can require near-zero magnitude force changes to accomplish a change in shape while retaining effectiveness as a physical barrier. This paper focuses on how to statically balance a specifically-designed compliant mechanism and how to incorporate this mechanism into a polygonal cell.

The mechanism consists of a compliant Peaucellier-Lipkin linkage layered with a pre-stressed link as the balancer. Previous work is presented that can show how a polygonal cell can be incorporated into a surface via a tiling …

Novel Blends Of Sulfur-Tolerant Water-Gas Shift Catalysts For Biofuel Applications, Timothy Michael Roberge Jan 2012

Novel Blends Of Sulfur-Tolerant Water-Gas Shift Catalysts For Biofuel Applications, Timothy Michael Roberge

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As traditional sources of energy become depleted, significant research interest has gone into conversion of biomass into renewable fuels. Biomass-derived synthesis gas typically contains concentrations of approximately 30 to 600 ppm H2S in stream. H2S is a catalyst poison which adversely affects downstream processing of hydrogen for gas to liquid plants. The water-gas shift reaction is an integral part of converting CO and steam to H2 and CO2. Currently, all known water-gas shift catalysts deactivate in sulfur concentrations typical of biomass-derived synthesis gas. Novel catalysts are needed to remain active in the presence of sulfur concentrations in order to boost …

Analysis And Remediation Of Chlorinated Hydrocarbons In Environmental Media, Jonathan Ticknor Jan 2012

Analysis And Remediation Of Chlorinated Hydrocarbons In Environmental Media, Jonathan Ticknor

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The two objectives of this work were to develop a simplified method for the analysis of chlorinated organics in water samples and to improve an existing soil remediation technology. The contaminants considered for these studies were chlorinated hydrocarbons because of their relative frequency of appearance at contaminated sites. The first half of this study involved the analysis of chlorinated ethenes by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID). I tested the hypothesis that the FID response factor is the same for all chlorinated ethene compounds. The rationale for this investigation is that if the hypothesis is correct, a single calibration …
