Low Energy Disruption Of Lipid Containing Biomass, Joaquin Rodriguez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Lipid containing biomass from microalgae has received recent research interest as a renewable and sustainable feedstock for biofuel production. Algae is known to offer as much as 30 times the energy density than corn based ethanol, the current world standard for biomass based liquid transportation fuels. The development of large scale systems and methods of extracting lipids from microalgae is still in the early stages of development and significant increases in efficiency and reduction in costs are necessary to substantiate algae as a feasible alternative source of fuel. Traditional conversion of algae feedstock into a refineable feedstock for biofuel can …

Oxidation Of Borides And Carbides With Y2o3 And Ta Additions, Salvador Manuel Rodriguez Jan 2012

Oxidation Of Borides And Carbides With Y2o3 And Ta Additions, Salvador Manuel Rodriguez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The study presented here describes an investigation of an oxidation scale of a fully-sintered Y2O3-ZrB2-TiC composite exposed in air at 1173K. Upon oxidation of the boride/carbide, a ZrO2-TiO2 was expected to form similar to the ZrO2-SiO2 dual scale of an oxidized ZrB2-SiC. The 47wt% Y2O3-38wt%ZrB2-16wt%TiC composite formed a dual scale consisting primarily of an Y2O3-ZrO2-TiC inner scale with an outer scale of ZrO2-TiO2-Y2O3.

The samples oxidized with a parabolic layer growth allowing the calculation of the effective diffusion coefficient indicating that the oxidation was controlled by oxygen ingress through primarily the ZrO2-Y2O3 phase. The oxygen potential between the inner layer …

Identification Of Rework Station Location To Enhance Reworkability Using Design For Disassembly, Juan Alejandro Saavedra Jan 2012

Identification Of Rework Station Location To Enhance Reworkability Using Design For Disassembly, Juan Alejandro Saavedra

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Rework stations are commonly established as part of each assembly stations causing the material flow of the process to be constantly interrupted. Another option is to place the rework station at the end of the production, but this is not cost effective. This breakeven point between reworkability and cost methodology has been proposed in this thesis to identify the location of a single rework station in an assembly line in order to enhance reworkability using the Design for Disassembly (DfD) principles. The methodology uses the 17 guidelines of DfD in a manufacturing scenario in order to propose a reworkability index …

Investigation On A Gas-Solid Fluidized Bed Hydrodynamics Using A Non-Intrusive Technology To Visualize Flow Field, Md Rashedul Hasan Sarker

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The biggest challenge for 21st century is to fulfill global energy demand and at the same time reduce detrimental impact on environment. Gasification technology can meet the requirement and also reduce emission without compromising its performance. In coal gasification, instead of burning coal completely a partial combustion takes place with presence of steam and limited amount of oxygen. In this controlled environment a chemical reaction takes place and produces a mixture of clean synthetic gas. Gas-solid fluidized bed is one type of gasification technology. During gasification mixing behavior of solid (coal) and gas and their flow pattern very complicated to …

Costal cartilage is much understudied compared with the load-bearing cartilages. Abnormally grown costal cartilages are associated with the inherited chest wall deformities pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum resulting in sunken and pigeon chests, respectively. A lack of understanding of the ultrastructural and molecular biology of costal cartilage is a major confounder in predicting causes and outcomes of these disorders. This study analyzed the structure of marginal human costal cartilage (ribs 6-10) through scanning electron and atomic force microscopes and identified the presence of straw-like structures running longitudinally. We also demonstrated that chondrocytes tend to occur singly or as doublets and …

Modelling Challenges And Attacks To Wireless Networks, Dongsheng Zhang, Santosh Ajith Gogi, Dan S. Broyles, Egemen K. Çetinkaya, James P. G. Sterbenz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A thorough understanding of the network behaviour when exposed to challenges is of paramount importance to construct a resilient MANET (mobile ad hoc network). However, modelling mobile and wireless networks as well as challenges against them is non-trivial due to dynamic and intermittent connectivity caused by channel fading and mobility of the nodes. We treat MANETs as time-varying graphs (TVGs) represented as a weighted adjacency matrix, in which the weights denote the link availability. We present how centrality-based attacks could affect network performance for different routing protocols. Furthermore, we model propagation loss models that represent realistic area-based challenges in wireless …

Software Education For Changing Computing Technology, Steve Eugene Watkins Jan 2012

Software Education For Changing Computing Technology, Steve Eugene Watkins

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Software education has been dominated by procedural-based programming languages such as BASIC, FORTRAN and C, and before that, the assembly languages. The primary reason that this methodology has held such sway in education was that it allowed quick action for the first major users of computers. This approach was the most straight-forward means of utilizing hardware that, over the last 60 years, has gotten faster and more complex through smaller and more densely packed elements. However, traditional advances as described by Moore’s law are now reaching both physical and economic limits. Pure object-oriented programming approaches offer benefits for hardware that …

Bridgeless High Power Factor Buck-Converter Operating In Discontinuous Capacitor Voltage Mode, Nasrullah Mohammad Awni Khraim

Theses

High power factor AC-DC rectifiers have gained a lot of attention due to demanding international regulations. The international harmonics’ standards, i.e. IEC 61000-3-2 and EN 61000-3-2 require low harmonic content of the main line current, or in other words, high power factor. Also, new market initiatives such as the 80 PLUS initiative, require high efficiency of the power supply. These standards specify the AC line current harmonics’ limits depending on load and application.

In this research, a new converter, with high power factor and high efficiency, operating in discontinuous capacitor voltage mode (DCVM) – is investigated targeting personal computers (PC) …

Strengthening Of Reinforced Concrete Beams Pre-Damaged In Shear, Yousef Mohammed Bachar Chekfeh Jan 2012

Strengthening Of Reinforced Concrete Beams Pre-Damaged In Shear, Yousef Mohammed Bachar Chekfeh

Theses

Repair and strengthening of existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures has increased drastically in recent years. Shear reinforcement in RC beams is typically of a small bar diameter, and hence any shear-damage would result in a severe safety hazard and a catastrophic mode of failure especially under extreme loading events. The present work was initiated to the effectiveness of different composite strengthening systems; namely externally bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymer (EB-CFRP), and near surface mounted glass fiber reinforced polymer (NSM-GFRP) to prolong the functional service life of RC beams pre-damaged in shear. It comprised experimental testing and analytical investigation.

The experimental …

Previous techniques for error concealment are classified into three groups depending on the Approach employed by the encoder and decoder: Forward Error Concealment, Error Concealment by Post Processing and Interactive Error Concealment. The objective of this thesis is to develop a Concealment methodology that has …

Effect Of Impurities On The Superheating Field Of Type-Ii Superconductors, F. Pei-Jen Lin, A. Gurevich Jan 2012

Effect Of Impurities On The Superheating Field Of Type-Ii Superconductors, F. Pei-Jen Lin, A. Gurevich

Physics Faculty Publications

We consider the effect of nonmagnetic and magnetic impurities on the superheating field Hs in a type-II superconductor. We solved the Eilenberger equations, which take into account the nonlinear pairbreaking of Meissner screening currents, and calculated Hs(T) for arbitrary temperatures and impurity concentrations in a single-band s-wave superconductor with a large Ginzburg-Landau parameter. At low temperatures, nonmagnetic impurities suppress a weak maximum in Hs(T), which has been predicted for the clean limit, resulting, instead, in a maximum of Hs as a function of impurity concentration in a moderately clean limit. It is shown that …

A Proposal To Use Real Time Pricing To Manage The Electrical Grid As A Step Toward Distributed Control, David Haynes, Steven Corns Jan 2012

A Proposal To Use Real Time Pricing To Manage The Electrical Grid As A Step Toward Distributed Control, David Haynes, Steven Corns

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An alternative method of managing the electrical grid is presented. Rather than using a centralized control paradigm to balance generation against the load, a distributed approach is proposed. It is believed that this design improves the robustness of the grid by using an architecture that allows for the automatic formation of local micro grids. the self-organization of these micro-grids makes it possible to identify participants in an ad hoc fashion after a storm for purposes of disaster recovery. the micro-grid can automatically grow to encompass all participants and join with other grids to encompass the entire region. © 2012 Published …

This paper provides a fuzzy assessor that can be used to evaluate system architectures. the fuzzy assessor includes a method of assigning system architecture attribute values to the lower-level subsystems using type 1 fuzzy sets and type 2 fuzzy sets. Each architecture attribute is evaluated at the lowest subsystem level and then mathematically rolled-up to provide the system level value for each architecture attribute. Then the value for each architecture attribute is combined into an overall system architecture performance value. This provides a mathematical method of qualitatively assessing a system architecture based on key architecture attributes. the fuzzy assessor uses …

Effective Dielectric Constant Of Two Phase Systems, Vladimir Petrovsky, Piotr Z. Jasinski, Fatih Dogan

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Theoretical approaches to electrical characterization of two phase systems are mostly limited to the systems where the individual components exhibit the same type of conductivity (pure dielectric or pure conductive systems). In this article, the brick wall geometry is extended to the mixed conductive systems with percolation. Impedance spectroscopy techniques were used for experimental investigation of slurries. Various metal oxide powders and host liquids were analyzed using a wide range of solids loadings. Comparison of experimental results with theoretical predictions shows good fitting of the experimental data. Parameters (the values of permittivity for both phases and percolation threshold) calculated from …
