Resilience Of Backbone Provider Networks, Egemen K. Çetinkaya, Justin P. Rohrer, James P. G. Sterbenz Jan 2012

Resilience Of Backbone Provider Networks, Egemen K. Çetinkaya, Justin P. Rohrer, James P. G. Sterbenz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Network topology models have drawn tremendous interest from the research community. Traditionally, Internet modelling has been done at the AS or router level, in part because this information is most available from tomography and public databases such as Rocketfuel. We argue that physical topology analysis is important for a more complete understanding of Internet structure, particularly for insight into the resilience and survivability of infrastructure against attacks and natural disasters. However, complexity and lack of complete data sets has hindered accurate topology modelling. In this short paper, we show through a sample case that physical topologies have significantly different characteristics …

Video Surveillance Analysis As A Context For Embedded Systems And Artificial Intelligence Education, Steve Eugene Watkins Jan 2012

Video Surveillance Analysis As A Context For Embedded Systems And Artificial Intelligence Education, Steve Eugene Watkins

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Video surveillance analysis is an exciting, active research area and an important industry application. It is a multidisciplinary field that draws on signal processing, embedded systems, and artificial intelligence topics, and is well suited to motivate student engagement in all of these areas. This paper describes the benefits of the convergence of these topics, presents a versatile video surveillance analysis process that can be used as the basis for many investigations, and presents two template exercises in tracking detected targets and in evaluating runtime efficiency. The processing chain consists of detecting changes in a scene and locating and characterizing the …

A Self-Tuning Optimal Controller For Affine Nonlinear Continuous-Time Systems With Unknown Internal Dynamics, Travis Dierks, Sarangapani Jagannathan Jan 2012

A Self-Tuning Optimal Controller For Affine Nonlinear Continuous-Time Systems With Unknown Internal Dynamics, Travis Dierks, Sarangapani Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a novel neural network (NN) - based self-tuning controller for the optimal regulation of affine nonlinear continuous-time systems. Knowledge of the internal system dynamics is not required whereas the control coefficient matrix is considered to be available. the proposed nonlinear optimal regulator tunes itself in order to simultaneously learn the optimal control input, optimal cost function, and the system internal dynamics using a single NN. a novel NN weight tuning algorithm is derived which ensures the internal system dynamics are learned while simultaneously minimizing a predefined cost function. an initial stabilizing controller is not required. Lyapunov methods …

Optimal Adaptive Controller Scheme For Uncertain Quantized Linear Discrete-Time System, Qiming Zhao, Hao Xu, S. Jagannathan Jan 2012

Optimal Adaptive Controller Scheme For Uncertain Quantized Linear Discrete-Time System, Qiming Zhao, Hao Xu, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, the Bellman equation is used to solve the optimal adaptive control of quantized linear discrete-time system with unknown dynamics. to mitigate the effect of the quantization errors, the dynamics of the quantization error bound and an update law for tuning the range of the dynamic quantizer are derived. Subsequently, by using adaptive dynamic programming technique, the infinite horizon optimal regulation problem of the uncertain quantized linear discrete-time system is solved in a forward-in-time manner without using value and/or policy iterations. the asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is verified by standard Lyapunov stability approach in the presence …

State And Output Feedback-Based Adaptive Optimal Control Of Nonlinear Continuous-Time Systems In Strict Feedback Form, H. Zargarzadeh, T. Dierks, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper focuses on neural network (NN) based adaptive optimal control of nonlinear continuous-time systems in strict feedback form with known dynamics. a single NN is utilized to learn the infinite horizon cost function which is the solution to the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation in continuous-time. the corresponding optimal control input that minimizes the HJB equation is calculated in a forward-in-time manner without using value and policy iterations. First, the optimal control problem is solved in a generic multi-input and multi output (MIMO) nonlinear system in strict feedback form with a state feedback approach. Then, the approach is extended to single …

Modified Cellular Simultaneous Recurrent Networks With Cellular Particle Swarm Optimization, Tae-Hyung Kim, Donald C. Wunsch Jan 2012

Modified Cellular Simultaneous Recurrent Networks With Cellular Particle Swarm Optimization, Tae-Hyung Kim, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A cellular simultaneous recurrent network (CSRN) [1-11] is a neural network architecture that uses conventional simultaneous recurrent networks (SRNs), or cells in a cellular structure. The cellular structure adds complexity, so the training of CSRNs is far more challenging than that of conventional SRNs. Computer Go serves as an excellent test bed for CSRNs because of its clear-cut objective. For the training data, we developed an accurate theoretical foundation and game tree for the 2x2 game board. The conventional CSRN architecture suffers from the multi-valued function problem; our modified CSRN architecture overcomes the problem by employing ternary coding of the …

Promoting Search Diversity In Ant Colony Optimization With Stubborn Ants, Ashraf M. Abdelbar, Donald C. Wunsch Jan 2012

Promoting Search Diversity In Ant Colony Optimization With Stubborn Ants, Ashraf M. Abdelbar, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In ant colony optimization (ACO) methods, including Ant System and MAX-MIN Ant System, each ant stochastically generates its candidate solution, in a given iteration, based on the same pheromone and heuristic information as every other ant. Stubborn ants is an ACO variation in which if an ant generates a particular candidate solution in a given iteration, then the components of that solution will have a higher probability of being selected in the candidate solution generated by that ant in the next iteration. In previous work, we evaluated this variation with the M M AS Ant System model and the Traveling …

Economics, Innovations, Technology, And Engineering Education: The Connections, John M. Ritz, P. Scott Bevins Jan 2012

Economics, Innovations, Technology, And Engineering Education: The Connections, John M. Ritz, P. Scott Bevins

STEMPS Faculty Publications

Throughout history the success of economies around the world has in large part been influenced by technological growth and innovations. Along with such growth and innovations came higher living standards and an improved quality of life for citizens residing and participating in those economies. However, not all countries were able to grow and develop at the same rate, resulting in considerable differences in economic welfare across populations. As nations around the world address the 21st century, economic growth and prosperity for some nations will depend upon how well their citizens are equipped and motivated to seek new technological discoveries and …

Plasma Levels Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls, Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, And Causation, Michael D. Freeman, Sean S. Kohles Jan 2012

Plasma Levels Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls, Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, And Causation, Michael D. Freeman, Sean S. Kohles

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are synthetic chlorinated hydrocarbons that have extensively polluted the environment and bioaccumulated in the food chain. PCBs have been deemed to be probable carcinogens by the Environmental Protection Agency, and exposure to high levels of PCBs has been consistently linked to increased risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). In the present article we present a forensic epidemiologic evaluation of the causal relationship between NHL and elevated PCB levels via application of the Bradford-Hill criteria. Included in the evaluation is a meta-analysis of the results of previously published case-control studies in order to assess the strength of association between …

Multi-Variable Model Of A Neural Network Based Weather Forecaster Using 2-Stage Feature Selection, Kunal Chandrakant Vora Jan 2012

Multi-Variable Model Of A Neural Network Based Weather Forecaster Using 2-Stage Feature Selection, Kunal Chandrakant Vora

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

This thesis proposes a novel approach for designing a neural network based forecaster that predicts more than one variable at a time. A second order two stage neural network training algorithm is used that employs orthogonal least square for training the output weights. In order to reduce the size of the network and train the forecaster optimally it uses time-domain feature selection and KLT transform based feature selection. The forecaster works well and the feature selection reduces the number of required inputs on the order of 70 %.
