Long-Term Performance Of Passive Materials For Removal Of Ozone From Indoor Air, C. J. Cros, Glenn C. Morrison, J. A. Siegel, R. L. Corsi

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The health effects associated with exposure to ozone range from respiratory irritation to increased mortality. in this paper, we explore the use of three green building materials and an activated carbon (AC) mat that remove ozone from indoor air. We studied the effects of long-term exposure of these materials to real environments on ozone removal capability and pre- and post-ozonation emissions. a field study was completed over a 6-month period, and laboratory testing was intermittently conducted on material samples retrieved from the field. the results show sustained ozone removal for all materials except recycled carpet, with greatest ozone deposition velocity …

Estimating Characteristic Bridge Loads On A Non-Primary Road Network, Eugene J. Obrien, Bernard Enright, Brendan Williams, Cathal Leahy Jan 2012

Estimating Characteristic Bridge Loads On A Non-Primary Road Network, Eugene J. Obrien, Bernard Enright, Brendan Williams, Cathal Leahy

Conference papers

When collecting truck loading data on a primary road network a common approach is to install a large network of permanent pavement-based Weigh-In-Motion systems. An alternative to this approach would be to use one or more portable Bridge Weigh-In-Motion systems which could be moved between bridges at regular intervals to determine the traffic loading throughout the network. A data collection strategy is needed to put such a system to best use. This paper details the data collection strategies which were examined for the National Roads Authority in Ireland. The use of urban economic concepts including Central Place Theory are discussed …

Cfd Study On Aerodynamic Effects Of A Rear Wing/Spoiler On A Passenger Vehicle, Mustafa Cakir Jan 2012

Cfd Study On Aerodynamic Effects Of A Rear Wing/Spoiler On A Passenger Vehicle, Mustafa Cakir

Mechanical Engineering Master's Theses

Aerodynamic characteristics of a racing car are of significant interest in reducing car-racing accidents due to wind loading and in reducing the fuel consumption. At the present, modified car racing becomes more popular around the world. Sports cars are most commonly seen with spoilers, such as Ford Mustang, Subaru Impreza, and Chevrolet Corvette. Even though these vehicles typically have a more rigid chassis and a stiffer suspension to aid in high-speed maneuverability, a spoiler can still be beneficial. One of the design goals of a spoiler is to reduce drag and increase fuel efficiency. Many vehicles have a fairly steep …

Electrically Tunable Fabry-Perot Resonator Based On Microstructured Si Contaning Liquid Crystal, V. A. Tolmachev, V. A. Melnikov, A. V. Baldycheva, Kevin Berwick, T. S. Perova Jan 2012

Electrically Tunable Fabry-Perot Resonator Based On Microstructured Si Contaning Liquid Crystal, V. A. Tolmachev, V. A. Melnikov, A. V. Baldycheva, Kevin Berwick, T. S. Perova

Articles

We have built Fabry-Pérot resonators based on microstructured silicon and a liquid crystal. The devices exhibit tuning of the resonance peaks over a wide range, with relative spectral shifts of up to Δλ/λ = 10%. In order to achieve this substantial spectral shift, cavity peaks of high order were used. Under applied voltages of up to 15 V, a variation in the refractive index of the nematic liquid crystal E7 from ΔnLC = 0.12 to ΔnLC = 0.17 was observed. These results may have practical applications in the near-, mid and far-infrared range.

Team Based Engineering Design Thinking, Nathan Mentzer Jan 2012

Team Based Engineering Design Thinking, Nathan Mentzer

Publications

The objective of this research was to explore design thinking among teams of high school students. This objective is encompassed in the research question driving this inquiry: How do teams of high school students allocate time across stages of design? Design thinking on the professional level typically occurs in a team environment. Many individuals contribute in a variety of ways to facilitate the successful development of a solution to a problem. Teachers often require students to work in groups, but little is known about how the group functions in the context of design and the potential interaction between group performance …

Infusing Engineering Concepts: Teaching Engineering Design, Jenny L. Daugherty Jan 2012

Infusing Engineering Concepts: Teaching Engineering Design, Jenny L. Daugherty

Publications

Engineering has gained considerable traction in many K-12 schools. However, there are several obstacles or challenges to an effective approach that leads to student learning. Questions such as where engineering best fits in the curriculum; how to include it authentically and appropriately; toward what educational end; and how best to prepare teachers need to be answered. Integration or infusion appears to be the most viable approach; instead of stand-alone engineering courses squeezing into the already crammed curriculum. An integrative approach whereby engineering is infused into the existing curriculum, within science, technology, mathematics or other courses, appears to be the best …

A Synthesis Of Rates And Controls On Elemental Mercury Evasion In The Great Lakes Basin, Joseph S. Denkenberger, Charles T. Driscoll, Brian A. Branfireun, Chris S. Eckley, Mark Cohen, Pranesh Selvendiran

Civil and Environmental Engineering - All Scholarship

Rates of surface-air elemental mercury (Hgo) fluxes in the literature were synthesized for the Great Lakes Basin (GLB). For the majority of surfaces, fluxes were net positive (evasion). Digital land-cover data were combined with representative evasion rates and used to estimate annual Hgo evasion for the GLB (7.7 Mg/yr). This value is less than our estimate of total Hg deposition to the area (15.9 Mg/yr), suggesting the GLB is a net sink for atmospheric Hg. The greatest contributors to annual evasion for the basin are agricultural (~55%) and forest (~25%) land cover types, and the open water of the Great …

Civil and Environmental Engineering - All Scholarship

There is increasing interest and concern over the impacts of mercury (Hg) inputs to marine ecosystems. One of the challenges in assessing these effects is that the cycling and trophic transfer of Hg are strongly linked to other contaminants and disturbances. In addition to Hg, a major problem facing coastal waters is the impacts of elevated nutrient, particularly nitrogen (N), inputs. Increases in nutrient loading alter coastal ecosystems in ways that should change the transport, transformations and fate of Hg, including increases in fixation of organic carbon and deposition to sediments, decreases in the redox status of sediments and changes …

Shift Towards P Limitation With N Deposition?, K. F. Crowley, B. E. Mcneil, G. M. Lovett, C. D. Canham, C. T. Driscoll

Civil and Environmental Engineering - All Scholarship

Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition is altering biogeochemical cycling in forests and interconnected lakes of the northeastern US, and may shift nutrient limitation from N toward other essential elements, such as phosphorus (P). Whether this shift is occurring relative to N deposition gradients across the northeastern US has not been investigated. We used datasets for the northeastern US and the Adirondack sub-region to evaluate whether P limitation is increasing where N deposition is high at two geographic scales, based on N:P mass ratios. Using a model- selection approach, we determined that foliar N for dominant tree species and lake dissolved inorganic …

Reliability Analysis Of Footbridge Serviceability Considering Crowd Loading, Joe Keogh, Colin C. Caprani, Paul Archbold, Paul Fanning Jan 2012

Reliability Analysis Of Footbridge Serviceability Considering Crowd Loading, Joe Keogh, Colin C. Caprani, Paul Archbold, Paul Fanning

Conference papers

The characteristic vertical response of flexible footbridges subjected to single pedestrian and crowd loading is examined in this paper. Typically, bridge vibrations produced from a crowd of pedestrians are estimated by using an enhancement factor applied to the effect caused by a single pedestrian. In this paper a moving force model is used in Monte Carlo simulations of a non-homogeneous sample of single pedestrians and crowds to estimate characteristic vertical vibration levels. Also in this work, statistical distributions of the bridge parameters are considered, these include flexural rigidity, mass and rotational stiffness at the supports. It was previously proven by …

The Effect Of Clusters Within Crowds Of Pedestrians On The Vertical Response Of A Flexible Footbridge, Joe Keogh, Colin C. Caprani, Paul Archbold, Paul Fanning Jan 2012

The Effect Of Clusters Within Crowds Of Pedestrians On The Vertical Response Of A Flexible Footbridge, Joe Keogh, Colin C. Caprani, Paul Archbold, Paul Fanning

Conference papers

The issue of excessive vibrations of footbridges due to the passage of pedestrians has been well documented in the past decade. Despite this there still remains great uncertainty as to how to predict the acceleration response of a footbridge due to crowd loading. This paper investigates the vibration response of a flexible footbridge subjected to crowd loading. Using a statistical model which caters for the variability of pedestrians, the vibration response of the footbridge is obtained. In this work, the effect of social groups or clusters of pedestrians in a crowd is investigated. Herein a cluster is defined as two …

Probabilistic Study Of Lifetime Load Effect Distribution Of Bridges, Donya Hajializadeh, Eugene J. Obrien, Bernard Enright, Colin C. Caprani, Emma Sheils, Simon Wilson

Conference papers

Assessment of highway bridge safety requires a prediction of the probability of occurrence of extreme load effects during the remaining life of the structure. While the assessment of the strength of an existing bridge is relatively well understood, the traffic loading it is subject to, has received less attention in the literature. The recorded traffic data are often limited to a number of days or weeks due to the cost of data collection. Studies in the literature have used many different methods to predict the lifetime maximum bridge load effect using a small amount of data, including fitting block maximum …

Environmental Value Engineering (Eve) Comparison Of A Usgbc Leadership In Energy And Environmental Design (Leed) Window System And Non-Leed Window System, Simon A. Adamtey

Master of Technology Management Plan II Graduate Projects

ABSTRACT

The need to explore environmentally friendly materials to avoid the depletion of the nonrenewable resources is very significant. The human race has been heavily dependent on nonrenewable resources since the industrial revolution. The rate of consumption of these resources is higher than the rate at which these resources replenish themselves since it has been established that most of these resources take millions of years to replenish. A critical look into the future reveals that there is a looming resource crisis since these resources are being depleted.

Fossil fuel combustion is linked to the increase in CO2 in the …

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

The last few decades have seen a tremendous growth in the field of bioengineering. As the need for further treatment and innovation for tissue repair, partial to full organ replication, and gene therapy continues to increase, the field of bioengineering will be tasked with curing and preventing disease and traumatic injuries. The two primary fields currently being focused on in the lab are the way cells interact and communicate to build tissues, and the nature and materials utilized in scaffolding to allow differentiation and migration when cells are seeded. Within those two fields are subsets of different methods, materials that …

Ion-Sensitive Field Effect Transistor As A Ph Sensor, Lihong (Heidi) Jiao, Nael Barakat Jan 2012

Ion-Sensitive Field Effect Transistor As A Ph Sensor, Lihong (Heidi) Jiao, Nael Barakat

Peer Reviewed Articles

In this work, both the static and dynamic behaviors as well as the signal read-out circuits of ISFETs were studied. The standard NMOS structure in conjunction with the insulator-electrolyte capacitor was used to model the ISFET under study. The site-binding theory was incorporated to describe the chemistry occurring at the insulator/electrolyte interface. The mechanism of the threshold voltage drift was further explored. We propose that to better understand the drift, both slow responding sites and hydration effects need to be considered. It was found that, to better simulate the voltage drift, two exponential terms had to be employed with one …

Laser Spark Ignition Of Counter-Flow Diffusion Flames: Effects Of Diluents And Diffusive-Thermal Properties, Fidelio Sime Segura Jan 2012

Laser Spark Ignition Of Counter-Flow Diffusion Flames: Effects Of Diluents And Diffusive-Thermal Properties, Fidelio Sime Segura

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A pulsed Nd:YAG laser is used to study laser spark ignition of methane counter-flow diffusion flames with the use of helium and argon as diluents to achieve a wide range of variations in transport properties. The global strain rate and Damkohler number on successful ignition were investigated for the effects of Lewis number and transport properties, which are dependent on the diluent type and dilution level. A high-speed camera is used to record the ignition events and a software is used for pre-ignition flow field and mixing calculations. It is found that the role of effective Lewis number on the …

Vision-Based Testbeds For Control System Applicaitons, Robert Sivilli Jan 2012

Vision-Based Testbeds For Control System Applicaitons, Robert Sivilli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the field of control systems, testbeds are a pivotal step in the validation and improvement of new algorithms for different applications. They provide a safe, controlled environment typically having a significantly lower cost of failure than the final application. Vision systems provide nonintrusive methods of measurement that can be easily implemented for various setups and applications. This work presents methods for modeling, removing distortion, calibrating, and rectifying single and two camera systems, as well as, two very different applications of vision-based control system testbeds: deflection control of shape memory polymers and trajectory planning for mobile robots. First, a testbed …

High-Q Bismuth-Silicate Nonlinear Glass Microsphere Resonators, Pengfei Wang, Ganapathy Murugan, Timothy Lee, Ming Ding, Gilberto Brambilla, Yuliya Semenova, Qiang Wu, Fumihito Koizumi, Gerald Farrell

Articles

The fabrication and characterization of a bismuth-silicate glass microsphere resonator has been demonstrated. At wavelengths near 1550 nm, high-modes can be efficiently excited in a 179-μm diameter bismuth-silicate glass microsphere via evanescent coupling using a tapered silica fiber with a waist diameter of circa 2 μm. Resonances with Q-factors as high as were observed. The dependence of the spectral response on variations in the input power level was studied in detail to gain an insight into power-dependent thermal resonance shifts. Because of their high nonlinearity and high- factors, bismuth-silicate glass microspheres offer the potential for robustly assembled fully integrated all-optical …

User Assisted Separation Using Tensor Factorisations, Derry Fitzgerald Jan 2012

User Assisted Separation Using Tensor Factorisations, Derry Fitzgerald

Conference papers

Recent research has demonstrated that user assisted techniques, where the user provides a ”guide” version of the source to be separated, are capable of giving good sound source separation. Here the user sings or plays along with the target source, and the user input is used to guide the separation towards the source of interest. This is typically done in a factorisation framework, such as non-negative matrix factorisation. Here we extend such approaches to a tensor factorisation framework to deal with multichannel signals. Further, we demonstrate how this framework can be used to improve the output from other user assisted …
