A Framework To Create Ontologies For Scientific Data Management, Leonardo Salayandia, Paulo Pinheiro Da Silva, Ann Q. Gates Jan 2012

A Framework To Create Ontologies For Scientific Data Management, Leonardo Salayandia, Paulo Pinheiro Da Silva, Ann Q. Gates

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Scientists often build and use highly customized systems to support observation and analysis efforts. Creating effective ontologies to manage and share data products created from those systems is a difficult task that requires collaboration among domain experts, e.g., scientists and knowledge representation experts. A framework is presented that scientists can use to create ontologies that describe how customized systems capture and transform data into products that support scientific findings. The framework establishes an abstraction that leverages knowledge representation expertise to describe data transformation processes in a consistent way that highlights properties relevant to data users. The intention is to create …

Rapid, Large-Scale Production Of Full-Length, Human-Like Monoclonal Antibodies, Christopher M. Warner Jan 2012

Rapid, Large-Scale Production Of Full-Length, Human-Like Monoclonal Antibodies, Christopher M. Warner

KGI Theses and Dissertations

Current recombinant protein production systems require several months to develop. Existing systems fail to provide timely, flexible, and cost-effective therapies to protect against emergency mass-casualty infections or poisonings. As the identity of many new biological threat agents are unlikely to be known in advance, pre-emptive manufacturing and stockpiling of countermeasures cannot be performed. Preparedness for a biological catastrophe requires a radical solution to replace the current slow scale-up and manufacture of lifesaving medical countermeasures. Subunit vaccines and antibody fragments may be produced in bacteria, yeast, plant or insect cells. However, generation of full-length, human like glycosylated antibodies requires mammalian cell …

Feature-Based Neuro-Symbolic Networks For Global Diagnostics, Tracy Lynn Schantz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Engineered system diagnostics have been researched over the years with many successful results. From transportation systems to office technologies, many have been equipped with self-diagnostic capabilities and are called Smart Machines. In spite of these advances, current diagnostic systems are driven by direct sensory information without much concern for patterns of the system behavior or features associated with them. For large-scale systems with complex dynamics, global as well as local diagnostics become of great importance, where sensory information is used as input for the local diagnostics, and patterns of behavior or features are utilized for global diagnostics.

The main objective …

Micro Channel Cooler Performance Improvement By Insonation, Peter Webb Higgins Jan 2012

Micro Channel Cooler Performance Improvement By Insonation, Peter Webb Higgins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The motivation for this work is the need to remove waste heat from laser diodes and high speed transistors in processes which are exponentially increasing past 1 kW/cm2 as anticipated by Moore's Law. The hypothesis guiding the work is that ultrasonic insonation of micro coolers employed to dissipate these heat loads can improve heat removal. It is thought that the mechanism promoting the benefit is enhancement of the ability of the coolant to remove latent heat in two-phase operation by managing entrained bubble size near the cooler's exit so as to forestall flow reduction or blockage caused by large bubbles, …

Performance Bounds For Sparsity Pattern Recovery With Quantized Noisy Random Projections, Thakshila Wimalajeewa, Pramod K. Varshney

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

In this paper, we study the performance limits of recovering the support of a sparse signal based on quantized noisy random projections. Although the problem of support recovery of sparse signals with real valued noisy projections with different types of projection matrices has been addressed by several authors in the recent literature, very few attempts have been made for the same problem with quantized compressive measurements. In this paper, we derive performance limits of support recovery of sparse signals when the quantized noisy corrupted compressive measurements are sent to the decoder over additive white Gaussian noise channels. The sufficient conditions …

Social Network Based Reputation Computation And Document Classification, Joo Young Lee, Yue Duan, Jae C. Oh, Wenliang Du, Howard A. Blair, Lusha Wang, Xing Jin

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

We develop two social network based algorithms that automatically compute author reputation from a collection of textual documents. We first extract keyword reference behaviors of the authors to construct a social network, which represents relationships among the authors in terms of information reference behavior. With this network, we apply the two algorithms: the first computes each author’s reputation value considering only direct reference and the second utilizes indirect reference recursively. We compare the reputation values computed by the two algorithms and reputation ratings given by a human domain expert. We further evaluate the algorithms in email categorization tasks by comparing them …

Fusing Heterogeneous Data For Detection Under Non-Stationary Dependence, Hao He, Arun Subramanian, Pramod K. Varshney, Thyagaraju Damarla Jan 2012

Fusing Heterogeneous Data For Detection Under Non-Stationary Dependence, Hao He, Arun Subramanian, Pramod K. Varshney, Thyagaraju Damarla

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

In this paper, we consider the problem of detection for dependent, non-stationary signals where the non-stationarity is encoded in the dependence structure. We employ copula theory, which allows for a general parametric characterization of the joint distribution of sensor observations and, hence, allows for a more general description of inter-sensor dependence. We design a copula-based detector using the Neyman-Pearson framework. Our approach involves a sample-wise copula selection scheme, which for a simple hypothesis test, is proved to perform better than previously used single copula selection schemes. We demonstrate the utility of our copula-based approach on simulated data, and also for …

Design Optimization Of Transistors Used For Neural Recording, E J. Basham, David W. Parent Jan 2012

Design Optimization Of Transistors Used For Neural Recording, E J. Basham, David W. Parent

Faculty Publications

Neurons cultured directly over open-gate field-effect transistors result in a hybrid device, the neuron-FET. Neuron-FET amplifier circuits reported in the literature employ the neuron-FET transducer as a current-mode device in conjunction with a transimpedance amplifier. In this configuration, the transducer does not provide any signal gain, and characterization of the transducer out of the amplification circuit is required. Furthermore, the circuit requires a complex biasing scheme that must be retuned to compensate for drift. Here we present an alternative strategy based on the design approach to optimize a single-stage common-source amplifier design. The design approach facilitates in circuit characterization of …

Civil and Environmental Engineering

This study was conducted to investigate the use of post-consumer corrugated board in controlled low-strength material (CLSM) applications. Corrugated fiberboard (termed corrugate), which constitutes a significant fraction of the municipal solid waste stream in the United States (approximately one third by weight), was used as a partial replacement for fine aggregate in CLSM at aggregate replacement ratios ranging from 0 % (i.e., control) to 6 %. The corrugate was fiberized (i.e., repulped) in a blender prior to being mixed with other constituents in the CLSM. The density, air content, and flow consistency of the fresh CLSM were determined, and bleeding …

Transformational Innovation: Reflections On How To Foster It In Engineering Education Systems, Roger Burton, Lizabeth Schlemer, Linda Vanasupa Jan 2012

Transformational Innovation: Reflections On How To Foster It In Engineering Education Systems, Roger Burton, Lizabeth Schlemer, Linda Vanasupa

Materials Engineering

This paper describes the educators’ disposition that we believe is required for transformational innovation. Innovating in this domain relies on interrupting existing patterns. This interruption requires the conscious recognition of patterns through an active practice of self observation. Though self observation does not necessarily need a collective process, it is served by encountering the diversity of views present in groups. Innovation in this sense consists of a fundamental identity shift in the human system and the innovators themselves. Unlike the processes of problem solving and process improvement, transformational innovation requires insight into the individual and collective attention of the designers. …

Geospatial information systems are used to analyze spatial data to provide decision makers with relevant, up-to-date, information. The processing time required for this information is a critical component to response time. Despite advances in algorithms and processing power, we still have many “human-in-the-loop” factors. Given the limited number of geospatial professionals, analysts using their time effectively is very important. The automation and faster humancomputer interactions of common tasks that will not disrupt their workflow or attention is something that is very desirable. The following research describes a novel approach to increase productivity with a wireless, wearable, electroencephalograph (EEG) headset within …

Effect Of External Electric Field On Hydrogen Adsorption Over Activated Carbon Separated By Dielectric Materials, Zheng Zhang Jan 2012

Effect Of External Electric Field On Hydrogen Adsorption Over Activated Carbon Separated By Dielectric Materials, Zheng Zhang

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Energy crisis and worldwide environmental problem make hydrogen a prospective energy carrier. However, storage and transportation of hydrogen in large quantities at small volume is currently not practical. Lots of materials and devices have been developed for storage hydrogen, but to today none is able to meet the DOE targets.

Activated carbon has been found to be a good hydrogen adsorbent due to its high surface area. However, the weak van der Waals force between hydrogen and the adsorbent has limited the adsorption capacity. Previous studies have found that enhanced adsorption can be obtained with applied electric field. Stronger interaction …

Predicting Speech Intelligibility, Andrew Hines [Thesis] Jan 2012

Predicting Speech Intelligibility, Andrew Hines [Thesis]

Other resources

Hearing impairment, and specifically sensorineural hearing loss, is an increasingly prevalent condition, especially amongst the ageing population. It occurs primarily as a result of damage to hair cells that act as sound receptors in the inner ear and causes a variety of hearing perception problems, most notably a reduction in speech intelligibility. Accurate diagnosis of hearing impairments is a time consuming process and is complicated by the reliance on indirect measurements based on patient feedback due to the inaccessible nature of the inner ear. The challenges of designing hearing aids to counteract sensorineural hearing losses are further compounded by the …

Effects of nano-copper (II) oxide (nano-CuO) and nano-magnesium oxide (nano-MgO) particles on activated sludge endogenous respiration (aerobic digestion), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) biodegradation, and nitrification were investigated through respiration rate measurement. for comparison, the effects of Cu (II) and Mg (II) ions on activated sludge were also studied. Results indicated that soluble Cu (II) has half maximum inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of 19, 5.5, 53, and 117 mg Cu/L for endogenous respiration, BOD biodegradation, ammonium oxidation, and nitrite oxidation, respectively. However, nano-CuO only inhibited BOD biodegradation at 240 mg Cu/L or more, and its associated toxicity was primarily caused by …

Controlling Nanoparticles Formation In Molten Metallic Bilayers By Pulsed-Laser Interference Heating, Mikhail Khenner, Sagar Yadavali, Ramki Kalyanaraman Jan 2012

Controlling Nanoparticles Formation In Molten Metallic Bilayers By Pulsed-Laser Interference Heating, Mikhail Khenner, Sagar Yadavali, Ramki Kalyanaraman

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The impacts of the two-beam interference heating on the number of core-shell and embedded nanoparticles and on nanostructure coarsening are studied numerically based on the non-linear dynamical model for dewetting of the pulsed-laser irradiated, thin (< 20 nm) metallic bilayers. The model incorporates thermocapillary forces and disjoining pressures, and assumes dewetting from the optically transparent substrate atop of the reflective support layer, which results in the complicated dependence of light reflectivity and absorption on the thicknesses of the layers. Stabilizing thermocapillary effect is due to the local thickness-dependent, steady- state temperature profile in the liquid, which is derived based on the mean substrate temperature estimated from the elaborate thermal model of transient heating and melting/freezing. Linear stability analysis of the model equations set for Ag/Co bilayer predicts the dewetting length scales in the qualitative agreement with experiment.
