Investigation Of Factors Associated With Truck Crash Severity In Nebraska, Aemal Khattak, Zheng Luo M.S, Mia Gao

Mid-America Transportation Center: Final Reports and Technical Briefs

The severity of truck crashes is a concern in the state of Nebraska. This study was undertaken to investigate factors associated with truck crash severity. A two-year dataset obtained from the Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR) was analyzed to determine those factors. Results indicated that the involvement of alcohol was associated with more severe injuries in truck crashes on Nebraska highways. Crashes involving farm equipment were more injurious than other truck crashes. Dawn and dusk were critical periods associated with more severe truck crashes. Further, the absence of medians contributed to truck crash severity. Crashes on adverse pavement conditions such …

Impact Of Truck Loading On Design And Analysis Of Asphaltic Pavement Structures- Phase Iii, Yong-Rak Kim, Hoki Ban, Soohyok Im

Mid-America Transportation Center: Final Reports and Technical Briefs

This study investigated the impact of the realistic constitutive material behavior of asphalt layer (both nonlinear inelastic and fracture) for the prediction of pavement performance. To this end, this study utilized a cohesive zone model to consider the fracture behavior of asphalt mixtures at an intermediate temperature condition. The semi-circular bend (SCB) fracture test was conducted to characterize the fracture properties of asphalt mixtures. Fracture properties were then used to simulate mechanical responses of pavement structures. In addition, Schapery’s nonlinear viscoelastic constitutive model was implemented into the commercial finite element software ABAQUS via a user defined subroutine (user material, or …

High Performance Modeling Of Atmospheric Re-Entry Vehicles, Alexandre Martin, Leonardo C. Scalabrin, Iain D. Boyd Jan 2012

High Performance Modeling Of Atmospheric Re-Entry Vehicles, Alexandre Martin, Leonardo C. Scalabrin, Iain D. Boyd

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Re-entry vehicles designed for space exploration are usually equipped with thermal protection systems made of ablative material. In order to properly model and predict the aerothermal environment of the vehicle, it is imperative to account for the gases produced by ablation processes. In the case of charring ablators, where an inner resin is pyrolyzed at a relatively low temperature, the composition of the gas expelled into the boundary layer is complex and may lead to thermal chemical reactions that cannot be captured with simple flow chemistry models. In order to obtain better predictions, an appropriate gas flow chemistry model needs …

Effect Of Applied Magnetic Field On Shock Boundary Layer Interaction, Ovais U. Khan, Alexandre Martin Jan 2012

Effect Of Applied Magnetic Field On Shock Boundary Layer Interaction, Ovais U. Khan, Alexandre Martin

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The governing magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) equations contain classical fluid dynamics equations along with coupled Maxwell’s magnetic induction equations. These equations model both advection and diffusion effects of electromagnetic field. However, available literature indicates that some previous investigations neglect the diffusion of magnetic field and considered only ideal MHD equations for modeling a typical MHD problem. In this work, the effects of magnetic field diffusion term also known as viscous magnetic term have been investigated over flow structure. Low magnetic Reynolds number approximation and ideal full MHD set of equations have been considered and solved using a four-stage modified Runge-Kutta scheme augmented …

Analysis Of The Penney-Ante Game Using Difference Equations: Development Of An Optimal And A Mixed-Strategies Protocol, Carl Barratt, Pauline Schwartz Jan 2012

Analysis Of The Penney-Ante Game Using Difference Equations: Development Of An Optimal And A Mixed-Strategies Protocol, Carl Barratt, Pauline Schwartz

Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

Penney-Ante is a well known two-player (Player I and Player II) game based on an information paradox. We present a new approach, using difference-equations, to analyzing the outcome for each player. One strategy yields a winning outcome of 75% for Player II, the player playing second. The approach also permits investigation of non-optimal strategies, and demonstrates how mixing of such strategies can be used to tune the winning edge of either player. We generalize the analysis to accommodate the possibility of a biased coin.

An Open-Source Sandbox For Increasing The Accessibility Of Functional Programming To The Bioinformatics And Scientific Communities, Matthew Fenwick, Colbert Sesanker, Jay Vyas, Michael R. Gryk

UCHC Articles - Research

Scientists are continually faced with the need to express complex mathematical notions in code. The renaissance of functional languages such as LISP and Haskell is often credited to their ability to implement complex data operations and mathematical constructs in an expressive and natural idiom. The slow adoption of functional computing in the scientific community does not, however, reflect the congeniality of these fields. Unfortunately, the learning curve for adoption of functional programming techniques is steeper than that for more traditional languages in the scientific community, such as Python and Java, and this is partially due to the relative sparseness of …

A Study Of Queuing Theory In Low To High Rework Environments With Process Availability, Adam J. Brown Jan 2012

A Study Of Queuing Theory In Low To High Rework Environments With Process Availability, Adam J. Brown

Theses and Dissertations--Manufacturing Systems Engineering

In manufacturing systems subject to machine and operator resource constraints the effects of rework can be profound. High levels of rework burden the resources unnecessarily and as the utilization of these resources increases the expected queuing time of work in process increases exponentially. Queuing models can help managers to understand and control the effects of rework, but often this tool is overlooked in part because of concerns over accuracy in complex environments and/or the need for limiting assumptions. One aim of this work is to increase understanding of system variables on the accuracy of simple queuing models. A queuing model …

Shifts In The Architecture Of The Nationwide Health Information Network, L. Lenert, D. Sundwall, Michael E. Lenert

Media Studies

In the midst of a US $30 billion USD investment in the Nationwide Health Information Network (NwHIN) and electronic health records systems, a significant change in the architecture of the NwHIN is taking place. Prior to 2010, the focus of information exchange in the NwHIN was the Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO). Since 2010, the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) has been sponsoring policies that promote an internetlike architecture that encourages point to-point information exchange and private health information exchange networks. The net effect of these activities is to undercut the limited business model for RHIOs, decreasing the likelihood …

A Critical Review On Corrosion Of Compression Ignition (Ci) Engine Parts By Biodiesel And Biodiesel Blends And Its Inhibition, B. Singh, John Korstad, Y. C. Sharma

College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship

This paper reviews the effects of corrosion on the engine parts that come in contact with a newly developed biodiesel fuel and its petrodiesel blend. Copper, aluminum, copper alloys (bronze), and elastomers caused significant levels of corrosiveness in biodiesel and biodiesel blend as opposed to low corrosion with petrodiesel. Specimens of stainless steel showed significant resistance to corrosion in biodiesel samples as compared to copper, aluminum, and copper alloys, but the level of corrosion was still higher than that in petrodiesel. Common methods adopted for measurement of corrosion include weight loss through static emersion tests, and electrochemical techniques by electrochemical …

Effect Of Fiber Orientation On Shape And Stability Of Air-Water Interface On Submerged Superhydrophobic Electrospun Thin Coatings, B. Emami, H. Vahedi Tafreshi, M. Gad-El-Hak, G. C. Tepper Jan 2012

Effect Of Fiber Orientation On Shape And Stability Of Air-Water Interface On Submerged Superhydrophobic Electrospun Thin Coatings, B. Emami, H. Vahedi Tafreshi, M. Gad-El-Hak, G. C. Tepper

Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering Publications

To better understand the role of fiber orientation on the stability of superhydrophobicelectrospun coatings under hydrostaticpressures, an integro-differential equation is developed from the balance of forces across the air–water interface between the fibers. This equation is solved numerically for a series of superhydrophobicelectrospun coatings comprised of random and orthogonal fiber orientations to obtain the exact 3D shape of the air–water interface as a function of hydrostaticpressure. More important, this information is used to predict the pressure at which the coatings start to transition from the Cassie state to the Wenzel state, i.e., the so-called critical transition pressure. Our results indicate …

Analysis Of Embryoid Bodies Derived From Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells As A Means To Assess Pluripotency, Steven D. Sheridan, Vasudha Surampudi, Raj R. Rao

Chemical and Life Science Engineering Publications

Human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) have core properties of unlimited self-renewal and differentiation potential and have emerged as exciting cell sources for applications in regenerative medicine, drug discovery, understanding of development, and disease etiology. Key among numerous criteria to assess pluripotency includes the in vivo teratoma assay that has been widely proposed as a standard functional assay to demonstrate the pluripotency of hiPSCs. Yet, the lack of reliability across methodologies, lack of definitive clinical significance, and associated expenses bring into question use of the teratoma assay as the “gold standard” for determining pluripotency. We propose use of the in …

Development And Application Of A Hydroclimatological Stream Temperature Model Within The Soil And Water Assessment Tool, Darren L. Ficklin, Yuzhou Luo, Iris T. Stewart-Frey, Edwin P. Maurer Jan 2012

Development And Application Of A Hydroclimatological Stream Temperature Model Within The Soil And Water Assessment Tool, Darren L. Ficklin, Yuzhou Luo, Iris T. Stewart-Frey, Edwin P. Maurer

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering

We develop a stream temperature model within the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) that reflects the combined influence of meteorological (air temperature) and hydrological conditions (streamflow, snowmelt, groundwater, surface runoff, and lateral soil flow) on water temperature within a watershed. SWAT currently uses a linear air-stream temperature relationship to determine stream temperature, without consideration of watershed hydrology. As SWAT uses stream temperature to model various in-stream biological and water quality processes, an improvement of the stream temperature model will result in improved accuracy in modeling these processes. The new stream temperature model is tested on seven coastal and mountainous …

Low-Tech Coconut Shell Activated Charcoal Production, Ami Cobb, Mikel Warms, Edwin P. Maurer, Steven Chiesa

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering

Water treatment technologies in the developing world typically focus on removing two types of impurities from water sources: suspended solids and microbial pathogens. However, as industrialization and high-input agriculture has expanded into the developing world, chemical impurities such as pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers have found their way into drinking water supplies and have been linked to severe health-related issues. Activated carbon has the capacity to remove these problematic chemicals from water sources. A simple, inexpensive, and effective activated carbon production process using local agricultural waste byproducts was assessed for the community of Bluefields, Nicaragua. Coconut shell charcoal was produced on …

Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) typically manifest as localized wall weakening and dilation of the infrarenal aorta, which grows gradually, and ultimately leads to fatal rupture. It is caused due to overexpression of proteolytic enzymes (matrix metalloproteases or MMPs) resulting into disruption of tissue structure, especially elastic matrix, which cannot be regenerated by adult vascular cells. On account of post-operative complications associated with their surgical repair, there is a critical need for developing non-surgical strategies for slowing and even regressing AAA growth. Recent studies in our laboratory have demonstrated that 1 ng/mL of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) enhances regenerative repair by …
