Polar Field Oriented Control With 3rd Harmonic Injection, Martin Todd Hess
Polar Field Oriented Control With 3rd Harmonic Injection, Martin Todd Hess
Master's Theses
Abstract
POLAR FIELD-ORIENTED CONTROL
with
3RD HARMONIC INJECTION
Martin Todd Hess
Field Oriented Control (FOC), also known as vector control, is a widely used and well documented method for controlling Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) and induction motors. Almost invariably the orientation of the stator and rotor (field) fluxes are described in rectangular coordinates. In this thesis we explore the practicality of using polar coordinates.
Third harmonic injection is also a well-known technique that allows full utilization of the bus (DC-link), thus allowing the motor to run to full base speed without the use of field weakening. This technique potentially …
Inertia Gap Between Md Simulations And Afm Experiments In Study Of Atomic Friction, Yalin Dong, Qunyang Li, Robert W. Carpick, Ashlie Martini
Inertia Gap Between Md Simulations And Afm Experiments In Study Of Atomic Friction, Yalin Dong, Qunyang Li, Robert W. Carpick, Ashlie Martini
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research
Both atomic force microscopy (AFM) experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation are carried out to investigate atomic stick-slip friction by sliding a Pt tip on an Au substrate. Efforts are taken to match the conditions for AFM experiment and MD simulation as closely as possible. The results show that AFM and MD provide consistent energetic parameters, which suggests that MD simulations can be reliably used to interpret energetic aspects of the interfaces. However, orders of magnitude differences in attempt frequencies are found, which indicates another challenge between the MD simulations and AFM experiments, i.e., the inertia gap.
Characterising Domestic Electricity Consumption Patterns By Dwelling And Occupant Socio-Economic Variables: An Irish Case Study, Fintan Mcloughlin, Aidan Duffy, Michael Conlon
Characterising Domestic Electricity Consumption Patterns By Dwelling And Occupant Socio-Economic Variables: An Irish Case Study, Fintan Mcloughlin, Aidan Duffy, Michael Conlon
Articles
This paper examines the influence of dwelling and occupant characteristics on domestic electricity consumption patterns by analysing data obtained from a smart metering survey of a representative cross section of approximately 4,200 domestic Irish dwellings. A multiple linear regression model was applied to four parameters: total electricity consumption, maximum demand, load factor and time of use (ToU) of maximum electricity demand for a number of different dwelling and occupant socio-economic variables. In particular, dwelling type, number of bedrooms, head of household (HoH) age, household composition, social class, water heating and cooking type all had a significant influence over total domestic …

Efficient Simulation And Analysis Of Quantum Ballistic Transport In Nanodevices With Awe, Jun Z. Huang, Weng Cho Chew, Min Tang, Lijun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Quantum-mechanical modeling of ballistic transport in nanodevices usually requires solving the Schrdinger equation at multiple energy points within an energy band. To speed up the simulation and analysis, the asymptotic waveform evaluation is introduced in this paper. Using this method, the wave function is only rigorously solved at several sampled energy points, whereas those at other energies are computed through Pad approximation. This allows us to obtain the physical quantities over the whole energy band with very little computational cost. In addition, the accuracy is controllable by a complex frequency hopping algorithm. The validity and efficiency of the proposed method …

Locomotor Adaptation To Resistance During Treadmill Training Transfers To Overground Walking In Human Sci, Sheng-Che Yen, Brian D. Schmit, Jill M. Landry, Heidi Roth, Ming Wu
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Treadmill training has been used as a promising technique to improve overground walking in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). Previous findings showed that a gait pattern may adapt to a force perturbation during treadmill training and show aftereffects following removal of the force perturbation. We hypothesized that aftereffects would transfer to overground walking to a greater extent when the force perturbation was resisting rather than assisting leg swing during treadmill training. Ten subjects with incomplete SCI were recruited into this study for two treadmill training sessions: one using swing resistance and the other using swing assistance during treadmill stepping. …

Study Of Turbulence-Radiation Interaction In Hypersonic Turbulent Boundary Layers, L. (Lian) Duan, M. P. Martín, A. M. Feldick, M. F. Modest, D. A. Levin
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Direct numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the effect of turbulence-radiation interaction in hypersonic turbulent boundary layers, representative of the Orion crew exploration vehicle at the peak heating condition during reentry. Both the effects of emission and absorption are considered by solving the radiative transfer equation using the tangent slab approximation and a spectral model with line-by-line accuracy. Nondimensional governing parameters to measure the significance of turbulence-radiation interaction are proposed, and the direct numerical simulation fields with and without radiation coupling are used to assess turbulence-radiation interaction. Is it found that the fluid medium within the boundary layer is optically …

Carbon Nanotubes Grown On Glass Fiber As A Strain Sensor For Real Time Structural Health Monitoring, Matthew Boehle, Qiong Jiang, Lingchuan Li, Alexandre Lagounov, Khalid Lafdi
Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
In order to more effectively monitor the health of composite structures, a fuzzy fiber sensor has been developed. The fuzzy fiber is a bundle of glass fibers with carbon nanotubes or nanofibers (CNTs or CNFs) grown on the surface. The nanotube coating makes the fiber bundle conductive while the small conductive path increases sensitivity. The fuzzy fiber sensor can replace conventional metal foil strain gauges in composite applications. The electrical response of the sensor is monitored in real time to measure strain, vibration, cracking and delamination. Continuous monitoring provides instant notification of any problems. Implementation of this sensor network in …
A Review Of Situation Identification Techniques In Pervasive Computing, Juan Ye, Simon Dobson, Susan Mckeever
A Review Of Situation Identification Techniques In Pervasive Computing, Juan Ye, Simon Dobson, Susan Mckeever
Articles
Pervasive systems must offer an open, extensible, and evolving portfolio of services which integrate sensor data from a diverse range of sources. The core challenge is to provide appropriate and consistent adaptive behaviours for these services in the face of huge volumes of sensor data exhibiting varying degrees of precision, accuracy and dynamism. Situation identification is an enabling technology that resolves noisy sensor data and abstracts it into higher-level concepts that are interesting to applications. We provide a comprehensive analysis of the nature and characteristics of situations, discuss the complexities of situation identification, and review the techniques that are most …
Phase-Distortion-Robust Voice-Source Analysis, Alan O'Cinneide
Phase-Distortion-Robust Voice-Source Analysis, Alan O'Cinneide
Doctoral
This work concerns itself with the analysis of voiced speech signals, in particular the analysis of the glottal source signal. Following the source-filter theory of speech, the glottal signal is produced by the vibratory behaviour of the vocal folds and is modulated by the resonances of the vocal tract and radiation characteristic of the lips to form the speech signal. As it is thought that the glottal source signal contributes much of the non-linguistic and prosodical information to speech, it is useful to develop techniques which can estimate and parameterise this signal accurately. Because of vocal tract modulation, estimating the …

Managing The Future Energy Policy For Ireland: Examining The Role Of Nuclear Power, Declan Lynch, Angela Wright
Dept. of Organisation & Professional Development Publications
This study assesses the attitudes and opinions of Irish people towards the use of nuclear power, and specifically examines the concept that Ireland should use nuclear power to generate electricity in the future. Currently, Ireland has a prohibition on nuclear power, with little debate or discussion on same, and with scant amounts of information published on the subject as it relates to Ireland. Conversely, from an international perspective, there is a significant volume of literature available covering all aspects of nuclear power, generated from over 50 years of nuclear power operations. Nuclear power technology is perceived as being a relatively …

An Empirical Method For Correcting The Detector Spectral Response In Energy-Resolved Ct, Taly Gilat Schmidt
An Empirical Method For Correcting The Detector Spectral Response In Energy-Resolved Ct, Taly Gilat Schmidt
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Energy-resolving photon-counting detectors have the potential for improved material decomposition compared to dual-kVp approaches. However, material decomposition accuracy is limited by the nonideal spectral response of the detectors. This work proposes an empirical method for correcting the nonideal spectral response, including spectrum-tailing effects. Unlike previous correction methods which relied on synchrotron measurements, the proposed method can be performed on the scanner. The proposed method estimates a spectral-response matrix by performing x-ray projection measurements through a range of known thicknesses of two or more calibration materials. Once estimated, the spectral-response matrix is incorporated into conventional material decomposition algorithms. A simulation study …

The antiferrodistortive (AFD) structural transitions of calcium titanate (CaTiO3) at ambient pressure have been extensively studied during the last few years. It has been found that none of the AFD polymorphs is polar or ferroelectric. However, it was recently shown theoretically and later experimentally confirmed that a ferroelectric transition in CaTiO3 can be induced by tensile strains. The ferroelectric instability is believed to be strongly coupled to the AFD soft modes. In this paper, we present a complete thermodynamic potential for describing the coupling between the AFD and ferroelectric phase transitions. We analyzed the dependence of transition …

Hot Deformation Behavior Of Friction-Stir Processed Strip-Cast 5083 Aluminum Alloys With Different Mn Contents, M. A. García-Bernal, Rajiv S. Mishra, R. Verma, D. Hernández-Silva
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Fine grained 5083 aluminum alloy is the most common Al-Mg alloy for superplastic forming (SPF) of lightweight sheet metal parts in the automotive and aerospace industries. the fine-grained sheet is industrially produced by massive cold rolling of conventionally rolled sheet stock at high cost. Friction stir processing (FSP) as a thermomechanical process is very effective in refining the microstructure of as-cast alloys such as that produced by continuous strip casting (CC). in this work, the effect of friction stirs processing on the superplastic properties of three CC 5083 aluminum alloys, with different Mn content, has been investigated. the three alloys …

Effects Of Mismatched Electrodes On An At-Cut Quartz Resonator, Huijing He, Jinxi Liu, Jiashi Yang
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
We study thickness-shear and thickness-twist free vibrations of a finite AT-cut quartz resonator with mismatched electrodes. The equations of anisotropic elasticity are used with the omission of the small elastic constant c56. An analytical solution is obtained using Fourier series from which the resonant frequencies, mode shapes, and vibration confinement resulting from the electrode inertia are calculated and examined.

Generalized Ellipsometry In-Situ Quantification Of Organic Adsorbate Attachment Within Slanted Columnar Thin Films, Keith B. Rodenhausen Jr., Daniel Schmidt, Tadas Kasputis, Angela K. Pannier, Eva Schubert, Mathias Schubert
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications
We apply generalized ellipsometry, well-known to be sensitive to the optical properties of anisotropic materials, to determine the amount of fibronectin protein that adsorbs onto a Ti slanted columnar thin film from solution. We find that the anisotropic optical properties of the thin film change upon organic adsorption. An optical model for ellipsometry data analysis incorporates an anisotropic Bruggeman effective medium approximation. We find that differences in experimental data from before and after fibronectin adsorption can be solely attributable to the uptake of fibronectin within the slanted columnar thin film. Simultaneous, in-situ generalized ellipsometry and quartz crystal microbalance measurements show …
Strength And Fatigue Of Three Glass Fiber Reinforced Composite Bridge Decks With Mechanical Deck To Stringer Connections, Andrew Gleason, Peter Dusicka
Strength And Fatigue Of Three Glass Fiber Reinforced Composite Bridge Decks With Mechanical Deck To Stringer Connections, Andrew Gleason, Peter Dusicka
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Replacement of the steel grating deck on the lift span of the Morrison Bridge in Portland, OR, will utilize glass fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) panels to address ongoing maintenance issues of the deteriorated existing deck, improve driver safety and introduce bridge water runoff treatment. This report outlines the testing methods and results of an experimental program aimed primarily at evaluating a new open cell deck. While most FRP panels are connected via shear studs that are grouted within isolated pockets, the panels in this case were bolted directly to the steel stringers. Two different FRP deck options were evaluated for …

Extreme Learning Machine Terrain-Based Navigation For Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Ee May Kan, Meng Hiot Lim, Yew Soon Ong, Ah-Hwee Tan, Swee Ping Yeo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) rely on global positioning system (GPS) information to ascertain its position for navigation during mission execution. In the absence of GPS information, the capability of a UAV to carry out its intended mission is hindered. In this paper, we learn alternative means for UAVs to derive real-time positional reference information so as to ensure the continuity of the mission. We present extreme learning machine as a mechanism for learning the stored digital elevation information so as to aid UAVs to navigate through terrain without the need for GPS. The proposed algorithm accommodates the need of the …

On Limitations Of Designing Usable Leakage-Resilient Password Systems: Attacks, Principles And Usability, Qiang Yan, Jin Han, Yingjiu Li, Huijie, Robert Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The design of leakage-resilient password systems (LRPSes) in the absence of trusted devices remains a challenging problem today despite two decades of intensive research in the security community. In this paper, we investigate the inherent tradeoff between security and usability in designing LRPS. First, we demonstrate that most of the existing LRPS systems are subject to two types of generic attacks - brute force and statistical attacks, whose power has been underestimated in the literature. Second, in order to defend against these two generic attacks, we introduce five design principles that are necessary to achieve leakage resilience in the absence …

Towards Fine-Grained Radio-Based Indoor Location, Jie Xiong, Kyle Jamieson
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Location systems are key to a rich experience for mobile users. When they roam outdoors, mobiles can usually count on a clear GPS signal for an accurate location, but indoors, GPS usually fades, and so up until recently, mobiles have had to rely mainly on rather coarse-grained signal strength readings for location. What has changed this status quo is the recent trend of dramatically increasing numbers of antennas at the indoor AP, mainly to bolster capacity and coverage with multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) techniques. In the near future, the number of antennas at the access point will increase several-fold, to meet …

The fatigue crack propagation (FCP) as well as the sustained loading crack growth (SLCG) behavior of two solid-solution-strengthened Ni-based superalloys, INCONEL 617 (Special Metals Corporation Family of Companies) and HAYNES 230 (Haynes International, Inc., Kokomo, IN), were studied at increased temperatures in laboratory air under a constant stress-intensity- factor (K) condition. The crack propagation tests were conducted using a baseline cyclic triangular waveform with a frequency of 1 3 Hz. Various hold times were imposed at the maximum load of a fatigue cycle to study the hold time effect. The results show that a linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) parameter, …
Cardiomyopathy Detection From Electrocardiogram Features, Mirela Ovreiu, Daniel J. Simon
Cardiomyopathy Detection From Electrocardiogram Features, Mirela Ovreiu, Daniel J. Simon
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Cardiomyopathy means "heart (cardio) muscle (myo) disease (pathy)". Currently, cardiomyopathies are defined as myocardial disorders in which the heart muscle is structurally and/or functionally abnormal in the absence of a coronary artery disease, hypertension, valvular heart disease or congenital heart disease sufficient to cause the observed myocardial abnormalities. This book provides a comprehensive, state-of-the-art review of the current knowledge of cardiomyopathies. Instead of following the classic interdisciplinary division, the entire cardiovascular system is presented as a functional unity, and the contributors explore pathophysiological mechanisms from different perspectives, including genetics, molecular biology, electrophysiology, invasive and non-invasive cardiology, imaging methods and surgery. …

Cache Invalidation Strategies For Internet-Based Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, Sunho Lim, Chansu Yu, Chita R. Das
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Internet-based vehicular ad hoc network (Ivanet) is an emerging technique that combines a wired Internet and a vehicular ad hoc network (Vanet) for developing an ubiquitous communication infrastructure and improving universal information and service accessibility. A key design optimization technique in Ivanets is to cache the frequently accessed data items in a local storage of vehicles. Since vehicles are not critically limited by the storage/memory space and power consumption, selecting proper data items for caching is not very critical. Rather, an important design issue is how to keep the cached copies valid when the original data items are updated. This …
A Novel Practical Control Approach For Rate Independent Hysteretic Systems, Frank J. Goforth, Qing Zhengb, Zhiqiang Gao
A Novel Practical Control Approach For Rate Independent Hysteretic Systems, Frank J. Goforth, Qing Zhengb, Zhiqiang Gao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
A disturbance rejection based control approach, active disturbance rejection control (ADRC), is proposed for hysteretic systems with unknown characteristics. It is an appealing alternative to hysteresis compensation because it does not require a detailed model of hysteresis, by treating the nonlinear hysteresis as a common disturbance and actively rejecting it. The stability characteristic of the ADRC is analyzed. It is shown that, in the face of the inherent dynamic uncertainties, the estimation and closed-loop tracking errors of ADRC are bounded, with their bounds monotonously decreasing with the observer and controller bandwidths, respectively. Simulation results on a typical hysteretic system further …

Experimental Investigation Of Suction Slot Geometry On A Goldschmied Propulsor, Nicole M. Thomason
Master's Theses
The Goldschmied Propulsor concept combines boundary layer suction and boundary layer ingestion to improve propulsive efficiency and reduce drag on an axisymmetric body. This investigation of a Goldschmied Propulsor aimed to determine influential characteristics of the suction slot geometry to aid in better slot geometry design and to decrease the suction flow requirements for maintaining attached flow over the entire model surface. The Propulsor model was 38.5 inches in length with a max diameter of 13.5 inches. Three suction slot geometries were investigated with the addition of aluminum cusps to the slot entrance. The cusps varied in the distance they …
