Molecular Dynamics Studies On Nanoscale Gas Transport, Murat Barisik Apr 2012

Molecular Dynamics Studies On Nanoscale Gas Transport, Murat Barisik

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Three-dimensional molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of nanoscale gas flows are studied to reveal surface effects. A smart wall model that drastically reduces the memory requirements of MD simulations for gas flows is introduced. The smart wall molecular dynamics (SWMD) represents three-dimensional FCC walls using only 74 wall Molecules. This structure is kept in the memory and utilized for each gas molecule surface collision. Using SWMD, fluid behavior within nano-scale confinements is studied for argon in dilute gas, dense gas, and liquid states. Equilibrium MD method is employed to resolve the density and stress variations within the static fluid. Normal stress …

A Unified Enterprise-Wide Cost Modeling Framework For Engineering Applications Based On Systems Engineering Principles, Yousuf S. Mohammed Apr 2012

A Unified Enterprise-Wide Cost Modeling Framework For Engineering Applications Based On Systems Engineering Principles, Yousuf S. Mohammed

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In the present research the problem of enterprise-wide cost modeling is approached from a systems engineering standpoint. What this does is to use each stage of product life cycle to obtain useful information that helps in estimating the cost of the system. Once a generic framework is developed for estimating the core cost, layers of other factors that affect the cost are applied to the core cost, such as risk and uncertainty, maintainability, supply-chain and socioeconomic conditions. The cost model is expanded to accommodate a product domain ranging from a simple object to a system in the following hierarchy: System, …

Integrating Probe Vehicles And Stationary Detector Data To Construct Accurate Cumulative Curves To Study Bottlenecks, Khairul Azfi Anuar Apr 2012

Integrating Probe Vehicles And Stationary Detector Data To Construct Accurate Cumulative Curves To Study Bottlenecks, Khairul Azfi Anuar

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Advancements in sensors technologies have given researchers and practitioners access to an immense amount of traffic data from multiple types of sensors. However, because of the diversity of the data types, developing a relationship between the different data sources can be challenging. To further complicate the issue, the presence of error or noise makes it difficult to infer any reliable conclusions from the data. To develop a relationship between different data sources, a new methodology is proposed in this thesis for fusing stationary detector data and probe vehicle data to construct an accurate cumulative curve. To remove or to reduce …

A Vision-Based Automatic Safe Landing-Site Detection System, Yufei Shen Apr 2012

A Vision-Based Automatic Safe Landing-Site Detection System, Yufei Shen

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An automatic safe landing-site detection system is proposed for aircraft emergency landing, based on visible information acquired by aircraft-mounted cameras. Emergency landing is an unplanned event in response to emergency situations. If, as is unfortunately usually the case, there is no airstrip or airfield that can be reached by the un-powered aircraft, a crash landing or ditching has to be carried out. Identifying a safe landing-site is critical to the survival of passengers and crew. Conventionally, the pilot chooses the landing-site visually by looking at the terrain through the cockpit. The success of this vital decision greatly depends on the …

Smart Sensing And Performance Analysis For Cognitive Radio Networks, Yanxiao Zhao Apr 2012

Smart Sensing And Performance Analysis For Cognitive Radio Networks, Yanxiao Zhao

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Static spectrum access policy has resulted in spectrum scarcity as well as low spectrum utility in today's wireless communications. To utilize the limited spectrum more efficiently, cognitive radio networks have been considered a promising paradigm for future network. Due to the unique features of cognitive radio technology, cognitive radio networks not only raise new challenges, but also bring several fundamental problems back to the focus of researchers. So far, a number of problems in cognitive radio networks have remained unsolved over the past decade. The work presented in this dissertation attempts to fill some of the gaps in the research …

The Modified Coastal Storm Impulse Parameter, Sayed Gholamreza Mahmoudpour Apr 2012

The Modified Coastal Storm Impulse Parameter, Sayed Gholamreza Mahmoudpour

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The correlation of the morphological changes to the coast and storm characteristics is among interests of coastal engineers. Better understandings of a storm's potential forces ultimately lead engineers to safer designs and minimize the damages. Therefore, a need to quantify the storm potential forces to a storm parameter is evident. The desired storm parameter is to consider all the relative physical factors and is to present realistic results that then can be proven by actual nature response.

The concept of Coastal Storm Impulse (COSI) parameter was first introduced by Basco and Klentzman (2006) and is based on the conservation of …

Design And Implementation Of A Z-Axis Mems Gyroscope With A Symmetric Multiple-Mass Mechanical Structure, Yujie Zhang Apr 2012

Design And Implementation Of A Z-Axis Mems Gyroscope With A Symmetric Multiple-Mass Mechanical Structure, Yujie Zhang

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis presents a z-axis MEMS gyroscope with a symmetric mechanical structure. The multiple-mass design prioritizes the sense-mode Quality Factor (Q) and thus improves its scale factor. The proposed mechanically coupled, dynamically balanced anti-phase sense-mode design minimizes energy dissipation through the substrate in order to maximize the Q. Numerical simulation is implemented in a finite element analysis software, COMSOL, to identify the two operation modes of the gyroscope: drive-mode and sense-mode. The multiple-mass gyroscope design is further fabricated using a one-mask process. Experimental characterization of frequency response in both drive-mode and sense-mode of the device are conducted, proving the design …

Dynamic Scheduling For Unplanned Maintenance Work, Tejaswi Karempudi Apr 2012

Dynamic Scheduling For Unplanned Maintenance Work, Tejaswi Karempudi

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Ships are maintained at regular intervals in a scheduled manner. But there may be unexpected problems which necessitate immediate or as-soon-as-possible attention. These kinds of problem are handled through some type of Unplanned Maintenance Scheduling (UMS).

In a recent paper, Bao, Mittal and Dean I presented a method for planning and scheduling maintenance jobs using lean maintenance principles. In this method, the priority levels of the jobs are initially identified through a Maintenance Priority Evaluation Matrix (MPEM), then conflicts between the jobs because of personnel, tooling and spatial uses are taken into account concurrently to force a re-prioritization of the …

Super-Resolution Of Unmanned Airborne Vehicle Images With Maximum Fidelity Stochastic Restoration, Amr Yousef Apr 2012

Super-Resolution Of Unmanned Airborne Vehicle Images With Maximum Fidelity Stochastic Restoration, Amr Yousef

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Super-resolution (SR) refers to reconstructing a single high resolution (HR) image from a set of subsampled, blurred and noisy low resolution (LR) images. One may, then, envision a scenario where a set of LR images is acquired with sensors on a moving platform like unmanned airborne vehicles (UAV). Due to the wind, the UAV may encounter altitude change or rotational effects which can distort the acquired as well as the processed images. Also, the visual quality of the SR image is affected by image acquisition degradations, the available number of the LR images and their relative positions. This dissertation seeks …
