Characterization Of Viscoelastic And Fracture Properties Of Asphaltic Materials In Multiple Length Scales, Soohyok Im

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Asphaltic materials are classical examples of multi-phase composites in different length scales. The understanding of the mechanical behavior of asphaltic materials has been a challenge to the pavement mechanics community due to multiple complexities involved: heterogeneity, anisotropy, nonlinear inelasticity, and damage in multiple forms. The micromechanics-based models based on numerical methods have been receiving attention from the pavement mechanics community because the modeling method can account for those complexities of asphaltic materials by considering the effects of material properties and geometric characteristics of individual components on overall performance behavior of mixture or structure. As a step-wise effort, this study intends …

Real-Time Detection Of Implant-Associated Neutrophil Responses Using A Formyl Peptide Receptor-Targeting Nir Nanoprobe, Jun Zhou, Tsai Yi-Ting, Hong Weng, Ewin N. Tang, Ashwin Nair, Dave P. Digant, Liping Tang

Bioengineering Faculty Publications - Archive

Neutrophils play an important role in implant-mediated inflammation and infection. Unfortunately, current methods which monitor neutrophil activity, including enzyme measurements and histological evaluation, require many animals and cannot be used to accurately depict the dynamic cellular responses. To understand the neutrophil interactions around implant-mediated inflammation and infection it is critical to develop methods which can monitor in vivo cellular activity in real time. In this study, formyl peptide receptor (FPR)-targeting nearinfrared nanoprobes were fabricated. This was accomplished by conjugating near-infrared dye with specific peptides having a high affinity to the FPRs present on activated neutrophils. The ability of FPR-targeting nanoprobes …

In the present study we quantify stress by measuring transient perspiratory responses on the perinasal area through thermal imaging. These responses prove to be sympathetically driven and hence, a likely indicator of stress processes in the brain. Armed with the unobtrusive measurement methodology we developed, we were able to monitor stress responses in the context of surgical training, the quintessence of human dexterity. We show that in dexterous tasking under critical conditions, novices attempt to perform a task's step equally fast with experienced individuals. We further show that while fast behavior in experienced individuals is afforded by skill, fast behavior …

Vision-Based Human Action Recognition: A Sparse Representation Perspective, Zhe Zhang Apr 2012

Vision-Based Human Action Recognition: A Sparse Representation Perspective, Zhe Zhang

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The objective of vision-based human action recognition is to label the video sequence with its corresponding action category. In this thesis, the human action recognition problem is solved from a novel sparse representation perspective. First, spatial-temporal interest points are extracted in the video sequences. Then, a cuboid is extracted centered at each spatial-temporal interest point. The histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) and histogram of flow (HOF) descriptors for each cuboid are computed and concatenated into a one-dimensional vector. The K-Means clustering algorithm is used to cluster these cuboid feature vectors into a few visual codewords. Finally, each action instance is …

Windowed Factorized Backprojection For Pulsed And Lfm-Cw Stripmap Sar, Kyra Michelle Moon Apr 2012

Windowed Factorized Backprojection For Pulsed And Lfm-Cw Stripmap Sar, Kyra Michelle Moon

Theses and Dissertations

Factorized backprojection is a processing algorithm for reconstructing images from data collected by synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems. Factorized backprojection requires less computation than conventional time-domain backprojection with little loss in accuracy for straight-line motion. However, its implementation is not as straightforward as direct backprojection. Further, implementing an azimuth window has been difficult in previous versions of factorized backprojection. This thesis provides a new, easily parallelizable formulation of factorized backprojection designed for both pulsed and linearly frequency modulated continuous wave (LFM-CW) stripmap SAR data. A method of easily implementing an azimuth window as part of the factorized backprojection algorithm is …

Theses and Dissertations

Head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) are among the leading causes of cancer related deaths throughout the world. The survival rate for this type of cancer is extremely low and has not changed significantly in recent decades. There is an imperative need to study tumor progression in a representative model in order to generate more knowledge about this disease as well as develop more effective treatment options. Multiple methods already exist for studying HNSCC and other types of cancers, including in vitro and in vivo models. Although in vivo models are more representative of the human carcinomas in terms …

Reducing Residual Drift In Buckling-Restrained Braced Frames By Using Gravity Columns As Part Of A Dual System, Megan Boston Apr 2012

Reducing Residual Drift In Buckling-Restrained Braced Frames By Using Gravity Columns As Part Of A Dual System, Megan Boston

Theses and Dissertations

Severe earthquakes cause damage to buildings. One measure of damage is the residual drift. Large residual drifts suggest expensive repairs and could lead to complete loss of the building. As such, research has been conducted on how to reduce the residual drift. Recent research has focused on self-centering frames and dual systems, both of which increase the post-yield stiffness of the building during and after an earthquake. Self-centering systems have yet to be adopted into standard practice but dual systems are used regularly. Dual systems in steel buildings typically combine two types of traditional lateral force resisting systems such as …

Cavitation Of A Water Jet In Water, Michael Marshall Wright Apr 2012

Cavitation Of A Water Jet In Water, Michael Marshall Wright

Theses and Dissertations

Cavitation is a phenomenon that occurs in liquids when the pressure drops below the vapor pressure of the liquid. Previous research has verified that cavitation bubble collapse is a dynamic and destructive process. An understanding of the behavior of cavitation is necessary to implement this destructive mechanism from an axisymmetric jet for underwater material removal. This work investigates the influence of jet pressure and nozzle diameter on the behavior of a cloud of cavitation bubbles generated by a submerged high-pressure water jet. First, this investigation is put into context with a condensed historical background of cavitation research. Second, a description …

The Use Of High-Solids Loadings In Biomass Pretreatment – A Review, Alicia A. Modenbach, Sue E. Nokes Apr 2012

The Use Of High-Solids Loadings In Biomass Pretreatment – A Review, Alicia A. Modenbach, Sue E. Nokes

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

The use of high‐solids loadings (≥ 15% solids, w/w) in the unit operations of lignocellulose conversion processes potentially offers many advantages over lower‐solids loadings, including increased sugar and ethanol concentrations and decreased production and capital costs. Since the term lignocellulosic materials refers to a wide range of feedstocks (agricultural and forestry residues, distillery by‐products, and dedicated energy crops like grasses), the term “solids loading” here is defined by the amount of dry material that enters the process divided by the total mass of material and water added to the material. The goal of this study is to provide a consolidated …

Sea Ice Mapping Using Enhanced Resolution Advanced Scatterometer Images, Steven Joseph Reeves

Theses and Dissertations

Sea ice is of great interest due to its effect on the global climate, the Earth's ecosystem, and human activities. Microwave remote sensing has proven to be an effective way to measure many of the characteristics of sea ice. In particular, several algorithms map the daily sea ice extent using a variety of instruments. Enhanced resolution images generated from the Scatterometer Image Reconstruction (SIR) algorithm can be used to generate a high resolution ice extent map. Previous algorithms using SIR images were developed for scatterometers which are no longer operational. The Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) is a newer scatterometer which has …

State Of Charge And Loss Of Active Material Estimation Of A Lithium Ion Cell Under Low Earth Orbit Condition Using Kalman Filtering Approaches, Saeed Khaleghi Rahimian, Sean Rayman, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

The state of charge (SOC) and the loss of active material of the electrodes of a Li ion cell under Low Earth Orbit condition (LEO) have been estimated using Kalman filtering methods, by means of the physics-based single particle (SP) model. Zero mean Gaussian noise was added to the charge-discharge curves obtained by the SP model to generate synthetic data. Afterwards, nonlinear Filtering approaches including Extended Kalman Filtering (EKF) and Unscented Kalman Filtering (UKF) were applied to predict the true SOC and the electrodes’ degradation, by minimizing the measurement residuals between the model prediction and the synthetic data. The results …

Drive-Amplitude-Modulation Atomic Force Microscopy: From Vacuum To Liquids, Miriam Jaafar, David Martinez-Martin, Mariano Cuenca, John Melcher, Arvind Raman, Julio Gomez-Herrero Apr 2012

Drive-Amplitude-Modulation Atomic Force Microscopy: From Vacuum To Liquids, Miriam Jaafar, David Martinez-Martin, Mariano Cuenca, John Melcher, Arvind Raman, Julio Gomez-Herrero

Birck and NCN Publications

We introduce drive-amplitude-modulation atomic force microscopy as a dynamic mode with outstanding performance in all environments from vacuum to liquids. As with frequency modulation, the new mode follows a feedback scheme with two nested loops: The first keeps the cantilever oscillation amplitude constant by regulating the driving force, and the second uses the driving force as the feedback variable for topography. Additionally, a phase-locked loop can be used as a parallel feedback allowing separation of the conservative and nonconservative interactions. We describe the basis of this mode and present some examples of its performance in three different environments. Drive-amplutide modulation …

Effects Of Approach Techniques In Place Kicking: A 3d Analysis, Chase M. Pfeifer

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Various studies aim to understand the fundamentals of kicking, primarily the instep kick commonly used by soccer players. Of those studies, most are limited to a 2D analysis using high-speed cameras for position tracking and electromyography to observe muscle activity. The few studies that investigate a 3D model are limited in their position tracking capabilities and focus mainly on joint flexion potentials and foot speed. To the authors knowledge no study of this caliber has been performed on the kinematics and dynamics of place kicking in American football. This thesis uses a 12 camera high-speed motion tracking system to investigate …

Skew Effects On Passive Earth Pressures Based On Large-Scale Tests, Shon Joseph Jessee

Theses and Dissertations

The passive force-deflection relationship for abutment walls is important for bridges subjected to thermal expansion and seismic forces, but no test results have been available for skewed abutments. To determine the influence of skew angle on the development of passive force, lab tests were performed on a wall with skew angles of 0º, 15º, 30º, and 45º. The wall was 1.26 m wide and 0.61 m high and the backfill consisted of dense compacted sand. As the skew angle increased, the passive force decreased substantially with a reduction of 50% at a skew of 30º. An adjustment factor was developed …
