Further Investigation On Magnetically Induced Subsequent Fault And Study On Electromagnetic Scattering Of Objects Buried Below A Random Rough Surface, Haiyan Yang May 2012

Further Investigation On Magnetically Induced Subsequent Fault And Study On Electromagnetic Scattering Of Objects Buried Below A Random Rough Surface, Haiyan Yang

All Dissertations

This dissertation contains two subjects: further development of numerical
technique for the analysis of magnetically induced subsequent fault (MISFault) in overhead power lines and its implementation into a software upgrade; and first-phase of study on the electromagnetic scattering from objects buried below a random rough surface making use of the multidomain pseudospectral time domain (PSTD) method and Monte-Carlo simulation. An initial electric fault can result in strong magnetic torque on the overhead power line conductors, which will make them swing and may bring them to close proximity or in contact with one another, causing a subsequent fault. In Chapter 2, …

Assembly And Disassembly Of Myofibrils In Dissociated Cardiomyocytes, Honghai Liu May 2012

Assembly And Disassembly Of Myofibrils In Dissociated Cardiomyocytes, Honghai Liu

All Dissertations

Significance
1) We have developed a hybrid TPEF-SHG imaging system with an onstage incubator for long-term living-cell imaging. Using the imaging system, the assembly of myosin filaments onto the myofibrils can be investigated without fluorescently labeling the specific proteins, which enabled us to study the dynamic process of the assembly and dedifferentiation of myofibrils in living cardiomyocytes without labeling any sarcomeric proteins for long time.
2) We observed the addition of new sarcomeres during myofibrillogenesis while neonatal cardiomyocytes were spreading on the substrate for up to 10 hours under the customized TPEF-SHG imaging system. New-sarcomere addition at both the ends …

A Comprehensive Human Factors Analysis Of Off-Duty Motor Vehicle Crashes In The United States Military, Rebecca Iden

All Dissertations

Researchers have always had great interest in traffic safety and the phenomenon of motor vehicle crashes (MVCs). Though scores of service members are severely injured or killed in off-duty MVCs each year, few studies have addressed the MVC phenomenon within the military population and none have conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the causal factors associated with MVCs involving military personnel.
The main purpose of this dissertation was to gain a greater understanding of the causal factors associated with serious and fatal off-duty personal MVCs for military service members with the ultimate goal of preventing future losses. The HFACS-MVC framework was …

Nanopillar Based Electrochemical Biosensor For Monitoring Microfluidic Based Cell Culture, Rajan Gangadharan May 2012

Nanopillar Based Electrochemical Biosensor For Monitoring Microfluidic Based Cell Culture, Rajan Gangadharan

All Dissertations

In-vitro assays using cultured cells have been widely performed for studying many aspects of cell biology and cell physiology. These assays also form the basis of cell based sensing. Presently, analysis procedures on cell cultures are done using techniques that are not integrated with the cell culture system. This approach makes continuous and real-time in-vitro measurements difficult. It is well known that the availability of continuous online measurements for extended periods of time will help provide a better understanding and will give better insight into cell physiological events.
With this motivation we developed a highly sensitive, selective and stable microfluidic …

The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) now specifies minimum retroreflectivity requirements. These requirements include an obligation for agencies to develop a strategy for maintaining compliance. With budget considerations, it is important that transportation agencies be able to efficiently assess the performance of their assets and adopt management strategies to comply with such requirements. As a foundational work, this research develops specific methodology for assessing the condition and performance of sign assets that are maintained by a large transportation agency. In doing so, this research provides for the determination of key elements that should be considered when developing any …

Methods And Considerations For Testing Resistive Memories, Adam David Johnson May 2012

Methods And Considerations For Testing Resistive Memories, Adam David Johnson

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Resistive random access memory (RRAM) has been the topic of many research papers in recent years, as companies begin to look for non-volatile alternatives to NAND Flash. The standard testing methodologies for single devices do not work for most of the RRAM technologies, so new methods must be developed. Parasitic capacitance will destroy the device under test without current compliance circuitry. A test structure with the capability to apply current compliance in either direction was designed, simulated, and tested with electrical results. Pulses greater than 4.0 V were delivered with 100 μA current compliance, and parasitic capacitance was kept below …

Heat, Mass And Force Flows In Supersonic Shockwave Interactions, John Michael Dixon

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

There is no cost effective way to deliver a payload to space and, with rising fuel prices, currently the price to travel commercially is also becoming more prohibitive to the public. During supersonic flight, compressive shock waves form around the craft which could be harnessed to deliver an additional lift on the craft. Using a series of hanging plates below a lifting wing design, the total lift generated can be increased above conventional values, while still maintaining a similar lift-to-drag ratio. Here, we study some of the flows involved in supersonic shockwave interaction. This analysis uses ANSYS Fluent Computational Fluid …

Accompanying the "green construction movement", new kinds of legal issues, particularly relating to green aspects such as certification, energy …

Response Strategies For Critical Supply Shortages In Healthcare, Christopher Adkins May 2012

Response Strategies For Critical Supply Shortages In Healthcare, Christopher Adkins

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The shortage of critical medical supplies in healthcare facilities is of obvious concern to both medical professionals and patients. Speci cally, the growing concern in this area is motivated, at least in part, by our dependence on generic pharmaceuticals. In the absence of FDA restrictions on the production of critical generic goods (e.g. morphine), manufacturers possess little financial incentive to produce numerous products whose patents have expired, but remain critical to patient care. Therefore, faced with crippling shortages, hospitals are left seeking ad-hoc solutions for meeting patient demand of these items. This work considers quantitative response strategies to mitigate the …

Comparative Fatigue Analysis Of Metals And Polymers For Engineering Applications, Monica Jones May 2012

Comparative Fatigue Analysis Of Metals And Polymers For Engineering Applications, Monica Jones

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Rapid prototype polymers are becoming increasingly popular for engineering applications, particularly during the design phase as a quick check for size and fit; however they are not currently widely-used for load-bearing applications. Current research at the University of Arkansas Department of Mechanical Engineering focused on rapid prototyped polymers by doing cyclical tensile testing. The results were analyzed for strain energy and fatigue data. When cycling at lower percentages of ultimate stress, unusual strain energy patterns were observed. This research details testing of metals in order to compare strain energy patterns to those of the rapid prototype polymers.

Investigation Of Slopes And Deflections Of A Stepped Beam Using A Global Formula For Ey'', Raymond Salmon May 2012

Investigation Of Slopes And Deflections Of A Stepped Beam Using A Global Formula For Ey'', Raymond Salmon

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the slopes and deflections of a beam with two steps (i.e. a beam with a change of cross section) by use of a global formula. In order to understand the derivation and use of this formula, a brief review of singularity functions is provided. The global formula simplifies the solution method for stepped beams (eliminating the need for dividing the beam into segments and solving multiple simultaneous equations). It has been found that, when loaded on the first beam segment, the global formula allows for quick calculations of slope and deflection of …

Relative Navigation And Control Of A Hexacopter, Timothy Mclain, Randal W. Beard, Robert C. Leishman, John Macdonald May 2012

Relative Navigation And Control Of A Hexacopter, Timothy Mclain, Randal W. Beard, Robert C. Leishman, John Macdonald

Faculty Publications

This paper discusses the progress made on developing a multi-rotor helicopter equipped with a vision-based ability to navigate through an a priori unknown, GPS-denied environment. We highlight the backbone of our system, the relative estimation and control. We depart from the common practice of using a globally referenced map, preferring instead to keep the position and yaw states in the EKF relative to the current map node. This relative navigation approach allows simple application of sensor updates, natural characterization of the transformation between map nodes, and the potential to generate a globally consistent map when desired. The EKF fuses view …

Effective Dielectric Constant Of Two Phase Dielectric Systems, Vladimir Petrovsky, Piotr Jasinski, Fatih Dogan May 2012

Effective Dielectric Constant Of Two Phase Dielectric Systems, Vladimir Petrovsky, Piotr Jasinski, Fatih Dogan

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Various theoretical approaches are implemented for electrical characterization of two-phase material systems. Most of these approaches do not include possibility of percolation of the dispersed material. In this article brick wall model is extended on the systems exhibiting percolation. Transition from brick wall geometry to corresponding equivalent circuits provides final equations for effective dielectric constant. Comparison of theoretical results with experimental data shows that developed equations provide good fitting of effective dielectric constant to experimental values. Dielectric constants of both phases and percolation threshold calculated from the fitting match the corresponding experimental values of the phases.

Physiochemical And Nanomanipulation Studies Of Carbon Nanomaterials, Siva Naga Sandeep Chalamalasetty

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Carbon nanomaterials are, without a doubt, one of man's wonder creations. Though these nanomaterials are a very recent trend, extraordinary electromechanical properties and the light weightiness of these nanomaterials attracted the attention of researchers. Although vast research has been done since the start of the US nanotechnology initiative, much effort was in the area of synthesis and characterization of the nanomaterials. However, most of the traditional macroscopic material's theories fail at the nanoscale level, and since the material properties are dependent on size and structure at nanoscale level, the behavior of the carbon nanomaterials in different environments needs attention. High …
