Plasma-Assisted Molecular Beam Epitaxial Growth Of Indium Nitride For Future Device Fabrication, Steven Paul Minor
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The need for energy conservation has heightened the search for new materials that can reduce energy consumption or produce energy by the means of photovoltaic cells. III-nitride alloys show promise for these applications due to their generally good transport properties and ability to withstand high power applications. Along with these, this family of semiconductor alloys has a direct bandgap energy range (0.7-6.2 eV) which spans the entire visible spectrum and encompasses a large portion of the available solar spectrum. Of the three root III-nitride semiconductors, AlN, GaN, and InN, InN has only recently become attainable epitaxially with qualities good enough …

Characterization And Modeling Of 4h-Sic Low Voltage Mosfets And Power Mosfets, Mihir Mudholkar
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The integration of low voltage and high voltage circuits on SiC has profound applications. SiC power devices have proved their superiority in terms of high temperature operation, faster switching frequencies and larger power densities when compared with Si power devices. The control of SiC power devices however, lies in the hands of low voltage circuits built on Si. Thus, there exists a separation in the overall system between the low voltage and high voltage side, which increases system cost, weight and reduces efficiency. With the advancement in low voltage SiC processing technology, low voltage control circuits can be made on …

Cytokines are known to be related to several diseases such as cancer, and Parkinson's diseases, so to be able to develop more effective diseases treatments their interactions have to be well understood. Amine-functionalized polystyrene and carboxyl-functionalized magnetic microspheres of ~6.0 ìm in diameter were used to immobilize heparin. The amount of heparin immobilized on polystyrene beads was 5.82 x 10-8 ± 0.36 x 10-8 M per 1.0 x 106 beads and for magnetic beads was 0.64 x 10-8 ± 0.01 x …
Design Of An Rf Cmos Power Amplifier For Wireless Sensor Networks, Hua Pan
Design Of An Rf Cmos Power Amplifier For Wireless Sensor Networks, Hua Pan
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Power Amplifier (PA) is the last Radio Frequency (RF) building block in a transmitter, directly driving an antenna. The low power RF input signal of the PA is amplified to a significant power RF output signal by converting DC power into RF power. Since the PA consumes a majority of the power, efficiency plays one of the most important roles in a PA design. Designing an efficient, fully integrated RF PA that can operate at low supply voltage (1.2V), low power, and low RF frequency (433MHz) is a major challenge. The class E Power Amplifier, which is one type …

Use Of Ultra High Vacuum Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition For Graphene Fabrication, Shannen Adcock
Use Of Ultra High Vacuum Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition For Graphene Fabrication, Shannen Adcock
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Graphene, what some are terming the "new silicon", has the possibility of revolutionizing technology through nanoscale design processes. Fabrication of graphene for device processing is limited largely by the temperatures used in conventional deposition. High temperatures are detrimental to device design where many different materials may be present. For this reason, graphene synthesis at low temperatures using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition is the subject of much research. In this thesis, a tool for ultra-high vacuum plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (UHV-PECVD) and accompanying subsystems, such as control systems and alarms, are designed and implemented to be used in future graphene growths. …

This work includes the microwave characterization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to design new CNTs-based high frequency components. A novel developed method to extract the electrical properties over a broad microwave frequency band from 10 MHz to 50 GHz of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in a powder form is performed. The measured scattering parameters (S-parameters) with a performance network analyzer are compared to the simulated one obtained from an in-house computed mode matching technique (MMT). An optimized first order gradient method iteratively changes the unknown complex permittivity parameters to map the simulated S-parameters with the measured one until convergence criteria are satisfied. …
Fabrication Of Vertical Silicon Nanowires Through Metal Assisted Deposition, Matthew Garett Young
Fabrication Of Vertical Silicon Nanowires Through Metal Assisted Deposition, Matthew Garett Young
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Controlled and ordered growth of Si nanowires through a low temperature fabrication method compatible with CMOS processing lines is a highly desirable replacement to future electronic fabrication technologies as well as a candidate for a low cost route to inexpensive photovoltaics. This stems from the fact that traditional CMOS based electronics are hitting physical barriers that are slowing the Moore's Law trend as well as the demand for an inexpensive solar cell technology that can obtain grid parity. A fractional factorial growth study is presented that compares the growth of Au and Al catalyzed Si nanowires at temperatures ranging from …

Ultra-Low Power And Radiation Hardened Asynchronous Circuit Design, Liang Zhou
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation proposes an ultra-low power design methodology called bit-wise MTNCL for bit-wise pipelined asynchronous circuits, which combines multi-threshold CMOS (MTCMOS) with bit-wise pipelined NULL Convention Logic (NCL) systems. It provides the leakage power advantages of an all high-Vt implementation with a reasonable speed penalty compared to the all low-Vt implementation, and has negligible area overhead. It was enhanced to handle indeterminate standby states. The original MTNCL concept was enhanced significantly by sleeping Registers and Completion Logic as well as Combinational circuits to reduce area, leakage power, and energy per operation.
This dissertation also develops an architecture that allows NCL …
Extending The Hybridthread Smp Model For Distributed Memory Systems, Eugene Anthony Cartwright Iii
Extending The Hybridthread Smp Model For Distributed Memory Systems, Eugene Anthony Cartwright Iii
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Memory Hierarchy is of growing importance in system design today. As Moore's Law allows system designers to include more processors within their designs, data locality becomes a priority. Traditional multiprocessor systems on chip (MPSoC) experience difficulty scaling as the quantity of processors increases. This challenge is common behavior of memory accesses in a shared memory environment and causes a decrease in memory bandwidth as processor numbers increase. In order to provide the necessary levels of scalability, the computer architecture community has sought to decentralize memory accesses by distributing memory throughout the system. Distributed memory offers greater bandwidth due to decoupled …

The development of these cell culture systems depends upon the identification of appropriate biomaterials and cell sources. Biomaterials should be carefully selected and fabricated into scaffolds for supporting cell growth and differentiation. In this study, we explored the fabrication of 3D electrospun nanofiber …
Optimization Of Short-Channel Rf Cmos Low Noise Amplifiers By Geometric Programming, Xiaoyu Jin
Optimization Of Short-Channel Rf Cmos Low Noise Amplifiers By Geometric Programming, Xiaoyu Jin
Electrical Engineering Theses
Geometric programming (GP) is an optimization method to produce globally optimal circuit parameters with high computational efficiency. Such a method has been applied to short-channel (90 nm and 180 nm) CMOS Low Noise Amplifiers (LNAs) with common-source inductive degeneration to obtain optimal design parameters by minimizing the noise figure. An extensive survey of analytical models and experimental results reported in the literature was carried out to quantify the issue of excessive thermal noise for short-channel MOSFETs. Geometric programming compatible functions have been determined to calculate the noise figure of short-channel CMOS devices by taking into consideration channel-length modulation and velocity …

Efficient Precast/Prestressed Floor System For Building Construction, Eliya E. A. Henin
Efficient Precast/Prestressed Floor System For Building Construction, Eliya E. A. Henin
Department of Construction Engineering and Management: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Precast floor systems provide a rapidly constructed solution to multi-story buildings that is economical, high quality, fire-resistant, and with excellent deflection and vibration characteristics. Conventional precast concrete floor system cannot compete with cast-in-place post tensioning flat slab floor systems when high span-to-depth ratio and flat soffit are required. This is due to the significant depth of standard precast beams, and use of column corbels and beam ledges. This research presents the development of a new precast concrete floor system that eliminates the limitations of conventional precast floor system and provides a competitive precast alternative to cast-in-place flat slab floor systems. …

Simulation Of Lower Limb Axial Arterial Length Change During Locomotion, Melissa D. Young, Matthew C. Streicher, Richard J. Beck, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert, Azita Tajaddini, Brian L. Davis
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
The effect of external forces on axial arterial wall mechanics has conventionally been regarded as secondary to hemodynamic influences. However, arteries are similar to muscles in terms of the manner in which they traverse joints, and their three-dimensional geometrical requirements for joint motion. This study considers axial arterial shortening and elongation due to motion of the lower extremity during gait, ascending stairs, and sitting-to-standing motion. Arterial length change was simulated by means of a graphics based anatomic and kinematic model of the lower extremity. This model estimated the axial shortening to be as much as 23% for the femoropopliteal arterial …
Balloonsat Based Investigation Of Atmospheric Electric Potential For Sustainable Energy Production, Jason Haynes
Balloonsat Based Investigation Of Atmospheric Electric Potential For Sustainable Energy Production, Jason Haynes
Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The Earth is daily bombarded with cosmic radiation which delivers ions to the atmosphere and creates new ions via the collision of the incoming particles with the atmospheric particles, stripping them of electrons. Generally, this process results in a positively charged atmosphere and a negatively charged surface of the Earth. This process causes an electrical current which flows throughout the atmosphere and into the Earth's surface and comprises a system referred to as "the global atmospheric electrical circuit." This electrical current is very small at the surface of the Earth, on the order of 161'-12 amperes per square meter. The …

Discussion Of “Comparison Of Base Shears Estimated From Floor Accelerations And Column Shears”, Rakesh K. Goel
Civil and Environmental Engineering
In lieu of a provided abstract, the first paragraph is provided:
The author agrees with Dr. Pinho about difficulties associated with the use of different damping models in nonlinear dynamic analysis. However, the focus of the original manuscript was to illustrate the difference between base shear estimated from floor accelerations, denoted as inertial base shear, and base shear estimated from column shears, denoted as the structural base shear. The difference between the two base shears exists regardless of the damping model used in the nonlinear analysis. In order to illustrate this conclusion, the Los Angeles building of the original manuscript …

Adding Cerebral Autoregulation To A Lumped Parameter Model Of Blood Flow, Russell Gentile
Adding Cerebral Autoregulation To A Lumped Parameter Model Of Blood Flow, Russell Gentile
HIM 1990-2015
A mathematical model of blood flow in infants with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) was improved by adding cerebral autoregulation. This is the process by which blood vessels constrict or dilate to keep blood flow steady in certain organs during pressure changes. The original lumped parameter model transformed the fluid flow into an electrical circuit. Its behavior is described using a system of thirty-three coupled differential equations that are solved numerically using a fourth-order Runge-Kutta method implemented in MATLAB. A literature review that includes a discussion of autoregulation mechanisms and approaches to modeling them is followed by a description of …
