Mobility Of A Semiflexible Chain Confined In A Nanochannel, Douglas R. Tree, Yanwei Wang, Kevin D. Dorfman Jun 2012

Mobility Of A Semiflexible Chain Confined In A Nanochannel, Douglas R. Tree, Yanwei Wang, Kevin D. Dorfman

Faculty Publications

The classic results of de Gennes and Odijk describe the mobility of a semiflexible chain confined in a nanochannel only in the limits of very weak and very strong confinement, respectively. Using Monte Carlo sampling of the Kirkwood diffusivity with full hydrodynamic interactions, we show that the mobility of a semiflexible chain exhibits a broad plateau as a function of extension before transitioning to an Odijk regime, and that the width of the plateau depends on the anisotropy of the monomers. For the particular case of DNA in a high ionic strength buffer, which has highly anisotropic monomers, we predict …

Testing And Validation Of An Autostainer, Nicholas Hanne Jun 2012

Testing And Validation Of An Autostainer, Nicholas Hanne

Biomedical Engineering

Histology performed by Cal Poly students for research projects and labs are currently performed by hand using a dipping technique. This technique is time consuming, expensive, imprecise, and often unrepeatable. Central Coast Pathology donated a Dako Autostainer to the Biomedical Engineering Department that can perform immunohistological stains of up to 48 samples simultaneously using tightly controlled reagent volumes and incubation times. Protocols are programmed into the machine and can be repeated under the same conditions every time with minimal preparation and exposure to potentially dangerous reagents. The autostainer was repaired and validated by comparing PECAM & BBI stains performed on …

Documenting The Construction Of A Plain Concrete Bridge Deck And An Internally Cured Bridge Deck, Carmelo Di Bella, John Schlitter, Neal Carboneau, Jason Weiss Jun 2012

Documenting The Construction Of A Plain Concrete Bridge Deck And An Internally Cured Bridge Deck, Carmelo Di Bella, John Schlitter, Neal Carboneau, Jason Weiss

Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Technical Reports

Durable and long lasting concrete is important, especially for bridge decks, which are susceptible to premature cracking and corrosion of the reinforcing steel. To increase the durability of the concrete and its service life, many transportation agencies use high-strength concretes. However, high-strength concretes often have problems with early age cracking due to shrinkage. These cracks can then open a path for chloride ions (found in road salts) to reach the reinforcing steel. The results of this research, which compared bridge installations on two structures in Monroe County, Indiana, confirm that internally cured concrete presents a better alternative to traditional plain …

Three-Dimensional Modeling Of Carbon/Epoxy To Titanium Single-Lap Joints With Variable Adhesive Recess Length, Yi Hua, Linxia Gu, Michael Trogdon

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

The objective of this paper was to investigate the performance of recessed single-lap joints with dissimilar adherends through the finite element method. The influence of material and geometric nonlinearity of the adhesive as well as the impact of the recess length was examined in terms of maximum principal stresses. The strength of the joint was obtained as the load to initiate the crack propagation. Results suggested that either adding a spew fillet or considering the adhesive plasticity led to reduced peak stresses at the edge of the adhesive layer. The presence of a spew fillet in the single-lap joint with …

Effect Of Fluxing Additive On Sintering Temperature, Microstructure And Properties Of Batio3, Yaseen Iqbal, Asad Jamal, Riaz Ullah, M. Naeem Khan, Rick Ubic

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Various fluxing materials are added to technical ceramics in an attempt to lower their sintering temperatures and make their processing economical. The effect of 0·3wt% Li2CO3 addition on the phase, microstructure, phase transition temperatures and dielectric properties of BaTiO3 was investigated in the present study. The addition of 0·3wt% Li2CO3 was observed to lower the optimum sintering temperature by ∼200◦C with no second phase formation and cause a five-fold reduction in grain size. Rhombohedral-to-orthorhombic and tetragonal-to-cubic phase transitions at the expected temperatures were evident from the Raman spectra, but the orthorhombic-totetragonal phase transition …

Regional Models Of Internal Tides, Glenn S. Carter, Oliver B. Fringer, Edward D. Zaron Jun 2012

Regional Models Of Internal Tides, Glenn S. Carter, Oliver B. Fringer, Edward D. Zaron

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Internal tides are ubiquitous in the ocean, and they play an important role in a range of ocean processes, for example, particle dispersal, acoustics, and vertical buoyancy flux. The wavelength of internal tides can be as much as 250 km in the open ocean, but as the generation of these tides depends on the angle between the depth-averaged current and the topography, there can be considerable local spatial variability. This range of scales makes it difficult to develop a comprehensive understanding of the processes involved from observations alone. Regional numerical modeling provides a way to study the generation and early …

Analysis Of The Impacts Of Transit Signal Priority On Bus Bunching And Performance, Eric Albright, Miguel Andres Figliozzi Jun 2012

Analysis Of The Impacts Of Transit Signal Priority On Bus Bunching And Performance, Eric Albright, Miguel Andres Figliozzi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Efficient and reliable public transit systems provide opportunities to reduce congestion, emissions in urban areas and provide access and mobility to residents. Headway, or the time difference between departing or arriving vehicles, is a useful measure to gauge bus transit performance; because short headways can lead to bus bunching incidents that quickly degrade transit level of service. While Transit Signal Priority (TSP) has been shown to decrease travel time and delay experienced by buses, little work has shown how TSP may affect bus bunching. This research attempts to understand the characteristics of bus trips, especially TSP, that prevent or promote …

Bus Fleet Type And Age Replacement Optimization: A Case Study Utilizing King County Metro Fleet Data, Wei Feng, Miguel A. Figliozzi Jun 2012

Bus Fleet Type And Age Replacement Optimization: A Case Study Utilizing King County Metro Fleet Data, Wei Feng, Miguel A. Figliozzi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Bus fleet data have consistently shown that vehicle operating and maintenance costs increase as vehicles age. A fleet manager has to deal with the tradeoff between the lower operating and maintenance costs of newer fleets and their higher initial capital costs as well as the tradeoff between conventional and fuel efficient bus technologies. This study formulates and implements a fleet replacement optimization framework that is applied to a case study that compares two bus types: a conventional diesel and a hybrid bus. Employing real-world bus fleet data from King County Metro (Washington State, USA) multiple scenarios are examined to account …

The Case For Open Source Appropriate Technology, Joshua M. Pearce Jun 2012

The Case For Open Source Appropriate Technology, Joshua M. Pearce

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Much of the widespread poverty, environmental desecration, and waste of human life seen around the globe could be prevented by known (to humanity as a whole) technologies, many of which are simply not available to those that need it. This lack of access to critical information for sustainable development is directly responsible for a morally and ethically unacceptable level of human suffering and death. A solution to this general problem is the concept of open source appropriate technology or OSAT, which refers to technologies that provide for sustainable development while being designed in the same fashion as free and open …

Bridgeless Step/Up Unity Power Factor Rectifier For High Voltage Applications, Aysha Kemadish Al-Kaabi Jun 2012

Bridgeless Step/Up Unity Power Factor Rectifier For High Voltage Applications, Aysha Kemadish Al-Kaabi

Theses

Power electronic devices with front- end rectifier are widely used in computer, communication and electric vehicle industries. These rectifiers are nonlinear in nature and generate current harmonics which pollute utility power. International harmonic standards (e.g., IEC 61000-3-2 and EN 61000-3-2) have been put in place to confine power pollution. These standards limit the current harmonics generated by loads to a specified threshold depending on load power and application. In other words, a high power factor is required.

Power supplies with active power factor correction (PFC) techniques are becoming necessary for many types of electronic equipment to meet the harmonic regulations …

Optimization Of Co2 Wag Processes In A Selected Carbonate Reservoir: Laboratory Study, Mohamed Elwy Abdalla Amin Jun 2012

Optimization Of Co2 Wag Processes In A Selected Carbonate Reservoir: Laboratory Study, Mohamed Elwy Abdalla Amin

Theses

Miscible gas flooding using carbon dioxide is currently investigated as a possible EOR process for a number of United Arab Emirates (UAE) reservoirs. The major factors affecting the implementation of CO2 floods are the availability of CO2 at economic prices and the net utilization ratio of CO2 per barrel of additional oil recovered.Minimizing net utilization requires controlling the high mobility ratio which causes lower sweep. To control the mobility ratio, the Water-Alternating CO2-gas (WAG) technique is proposed.

The objective of this work is to experimentally assess the recovery of oil with CO2 injection in …

Ifalcon: A Neural Architecture For Hierarchical Planning, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan Jun 2012

Ifalcon: A Neural Architecture For Hierarchical Planning, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Hierarchical planning is an approach of planning by composing and executing hierarchically arranged predefined plans on the fly to solve some problems. This approach commonly relies on a domain expert providing all semantic and structural knowledge. One challenge is how the system deals with incomplete ill-defined knowledge while the solution can be achieved on the fly. Most symbolic-based hierarchical planners have been devised to allow the knowledge to be described expressively. However, in some cases, it is still difficult to produce the appropriate knowledge due to the complexity of the problem domain especially if the missing knowledge must be acquired …

Stochastic Dominance In Stochastic Dcops For Risk-Sensitive Applications, Nguyen Duc Thien, William Yeoh, Hoong Chuin Lau Jun 2012

Stochastic Dominance In Stochastic Dcops For Risk-Sensitive Applications, Nguyen Duc Thien, William Yeoh, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Distributed constraint optimization problems (DCOPs) are well-suited for modeling multi-agent coordination problems where the primary interactions are between local subsets of agents. However, one limitation of DCOPs is the assumption that the constraint rewards are without uncertainty. Researchers have thus extended DCOPs to Stochastic DCOPs (SDCOPs), where rewards are sampled from known probability distribution reward functions, and introduced algorithms to find solutions with the largest expected reward. Unfortunately, such a solution might be very risky, that is, very likely to result in a poor reward. Thus, in this paper, we make three contributions: (1) we propose a stricter objective for …
