Structural Properties Of Iclt Wall Panels Composed Of Beetle Killed Wood, David Edward Wilson Jun 2012

Structural Properties Of Iclt Wall Panels Composed Of Beetle Killed Wood, David Edward Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

Interlocking Cross Laminated Timber (ICLT) wall panels are a new wood construction product similar to Cross Laminated Timber panels. Besides being an innovative structural system, they also utilize beetle killed timber from many of the forests that have been devastated by the Mountain Pine Beetle. Three tests were performed on three ply ICLT panels measuring 8 feet (2.44m) wide, 8 feet (2.44m) tall and 8.5 inches (21.6cm) thick to determine the racking, flexural and axial strengths of the wall panels. After each test was performed the walls were disassembled and investigated for cause of failure. Using the data from the …

Generation Of A Wide-Band Response Using Early-Time And Middle-Frequency Data Throught The Use Of Orthogonal Fuctions, Woojin Lee, Tapan Kumar Sarkar, Jinhwan Koh, Hong Sik Moon, Magdalena Salazar Palma

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Abstract|Generation of a wide-band response using partial information from the time domain (TD) data and frequency domain (FD) data has been accomplished in this paper through the use of three different orthogonal functions, such as the continuous Laguerre functions, the Bessel-Chebyshev functions, and the associate Hermite functions. In this hybrid approach, one can generate the early-time response using the method of marching-on-in-time (MOT) and use the method of moment (MOM) to generate the middle-frequency response, as the low-frequency data may be unstable. Since the early-time and the middle-frequency data are mutually complimentary, they can provide the missing low- and high-frequency …

Development And Testing Of Chemically-Based Self-Consolidating Concrete, Mahdi Arezoumandi, Mark Ezzell, Jeffery S. Volz

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Self-consolidating concrete (SCC) has the potential to significantly reduce costs associated with concrete construction. SCC is a highly flowable, Non segregating concrete that has a variety of advantages over conventional concrete (CC). However, SCC is not without its problems, which can include increased creep and shrinkage, as well as decreased bond and shear strength. the goal of this research project was to evaluate the creep, shrinkage, and shear behavior of a chemically Based SCC mix. One of the benefits of a chemically Based approach is the potential to eliminate the negative side effects of many SCC mixes. the investigation included …

Analysis Of Thermal Conductance Of Ballistic Point Contacts, Changwook Jeong, Mark S. Lundstrom Jun 2012

Analysis Of Thermal Conductance Of Ballistic Point Contacts, Changwook Jeong, Mark S. Lundstrom

Birck and NCN Publications

Substantial reduction of thermal conductance (K-ph) was recently reported for air gap heterostructures (AGHs) in which two bulk layers were connected by low-density nanopillars. We analyze K-ph using a full phonon dispersion and including important phonon scattering. We find a transition from ballistic at low temperatures to quasi-ballistic transport near room temperature and explain the slow roll-off in K-ph that occurs near room temperature. We show that the density of nanopillars deduced from the analysis depends strongly on the phonon dispersion assumed. Our model provides a good agreement with experiment that will be necessary to design AGHs for thermoelectric applications. …

The Effects Of Diameter And Chirality On The Thermal Transport In Free-Standing And Supported Carbon-Nanotubes, Bo Qiu, Yan Wang, Xiulin Ruan, Qing Zhao Jun 2012

The Effects Of Diameter And Chirality On The Thermal Transport In Free-Standing And Supported Carbon-Nanotubes, Bo Qiu, Yan Wang, Xiulin Ruan, Qing Zhao

Birck and NCN Publications

We use molecular dynamics simulations to explore the lattice thermal transport in free-standing and supported single-wall carbon-nanotube (SWCNT) in comparison to that in graphene nanoribbon and graphene sheet. For free-standing SWCNT, the lattice thermal conductivity increases with diameter and approaches that of graphene, partly due to the curvature. Supported SWCNT thermal conductivity is reduced by 34%-41% compared to the free-standing case, which is less than that in supported graphene. Also, it shows an evident chirality dependence by varying about 10%, which we attribute to chirality-dependent interfacial phonon scattering. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. High-Volume Fly Ash Concrete For Sustainable Construction, Jeffery S. Volz Jun 2012

High-Volume Fly Ash Concrete For Sustainable Construction, Jeffery S. Volz

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

With worldwide production of fly ash approaching 800 million tons annually, increasing the amount of fly ash used in concrete will remove more material from the solid waste stream and reduce the amount ending up in landfills. However, most specifications limit the amount of cement replacement with fly ash to less than 25 or 30%. Concrete with fly ash replacement levels of at least 50% - referred to as high-volume fly ash (HVFA) concrete - offers a potential green solution. the following study investigated the structural performance of HVFA concrete compared to conventional Portland-cement concrete. Specifically, the research examined both …

Lagrangian Relaxation For Large-Scale Multi-Agent Planning, Geoff Gordon, Pradeep Reddy Varakantham, William Yeoh, Ajay Srinivasan, Hoong Chuin Lau, Shih-Fen Cheng Jun 2012

Lagrangian Relaxation For Large-Scale Multi-Agent Planning, Geoff Gordon, Pradeep Reddy Varakantham, William Yeoh, Ajay Srinivasan, Hoong Chuin Lau, Shih-Fen Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Multi-agent planning is a well-studied problem with applications in various areas. Due to computational constraints, existing research typically focuses either on unstructured domains with many agents, where we are content with heuristic solutions, or domains with small numbers of agents or special structure, where we can find provably near-optimal solutions. In contrast, here we focus on provably near-optimal solutions in domains with many agents, by exploiting influence limits. To that end, we make two key contributions: (a) an algorithm, based on Lagrangian relaxation and randomized rounding, for solving multi-agent planning problems represented as large mixed-integer programs; (b) a proof of …

Development Of Embedded Captcha Elements For Bot Prevention In Fischer Random Chess, Ryan Mcdaniel, Roman V. Yampolskiy Jun 2012

Development Of Embedded Captcha Elements For Bot Prevention In Fischer Random Chess, Ryan Mcdaniel, Roman V. Yampolskiy

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Cheating in chess can take many forms and has existed almost as long as the game itself. The advent of computers has introduced a new form of cheating into the game. Thanks to the computational power of modern-day computers, a player can use a program to calculate thousands of moves for him or her, and determine the best possible scenario for each move and countermove. These programs are often referred to as "bots," and can even play the game without any user interaction. In this paper, we describe a methodology aimed at preventing bots from participating in online chess games. …

Predicting Timing Violations Through Instruction-Level Path Sensitization Analysis, Sanghamitra Roy, Koushik Chakraborty Jun 2012

Predicting Timing Violations Through Instruction-Level Path Sensitization Analysis, Sanghamitra Roy, Koushik Chakraborty

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we present a novel technique for early prediction of timing violations in high-performance pipelined microprocessors. We show that a static instruction in a microprocessor, identified by its Program Counter (PC), is an excellent predictor of an upcoming timing violation. Our analysis combines architectural data collected from real program execution with gate level logic analysis. Exploiting this PC based timing violation predictability, we propose a robust system design that predicts and tolerates timing violations seamlessly in a pipelined microprocessor. Under two different faulty environments, we show 20.9-89.8% and 14.6-80.6% average performance improvements in real programs over other state-of-the-art …

Towards Graceful Aging Degradation In Nocs Through An Adaptive Routing Algorithm, Kshitij Bhardwaj, Koushik Chakraborty, Sanghamitra Roy Jun 2012

Towards Graceful Aging Degradation In Nocs Through An Adaptive Routing Algorithm, Kshitij Bhardwaj, Koushik Chakraborty, Sanghamitra Roy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Continuous technology scaling has made aging mechanisms such as Negative Bias Temperature Instability (NBTI) and electromigration primary concerns in Network-on-Chip (NoC) designs. In this paper, we model the effects of these aging mechanisms on NoC components such as routers and links using a novel reliability metric called Traffic Threshold per Epoch (TTpE). We observe a critical need of a robust aging-aware routing algorithm that not only reduces power-performance overheads caused due to aging degradation but also minimizes the stress experienced by heavily utilized routers and links. To solve this problem, we propose an aging-aware adaptive routing algorithm and a router …

An Exploratory Investigation Into How Cold Working Can Affect The Acoustic Performance Of Thin Aluminum Foil In A Ribbon Microphone, Alexander (Alex) Stanley Jun 2012

An Exploratory Investigation Into How Cold Working Can Affect The Acoustic Performance Of Thin Aluminum Foil In A Ribbon Microphone, Alexander (Alex) Stanley

Materials Engineering

Ribbons of 4 μm thin 99.1% pure aluminum foil were cut and corrugated to replace the stock ribbon in an Apex 205 ribbon microphone. Prior to corrugation, half of the ribbons were sandwiched between two KimWipes and two pieces of cardstock then hammered to impart strain hardening. Each ribbon was placed into the microphone capsule and the frequency response of each ribbon was measured. A 10 second sine sweep from 20-20,000 Hz was played through a KRK Rokit 5 speaker and recorded through a ribbon microphone placed 6 inches away from the speaker cone. The signal generated by the ribbon …

Effects Of Annealing/Solution Treating And Aging On Longitudinal And Transverse Properties Of Ti-6al-4v Forgings, Blake Reller Jun 2012

Effects Of Annealing/Solution Treating And Aging On Longitudinal And Transverse Properties Of Ti-6al-4v Forgings, Blake Reller

Materials Engineering

Forty-eight subsize round-bar tensile samples (ASTM E8) were machined from 3-in-thick forgings of Ti-6Al-4V. Half of these samples were cut so the axis aligned with the longitudinal (LG) direction of the forging, the other half were cut to align with the transverse (LT) direction. Four samples from each direction were subjected to one of six heat treatments so that a total of eight samples received each treatment. Annealed samples were held at 1350°F for two hours, then air cooled. Solution treated and aged (STA) samples were solution treated at one of five temperatures between 1785°F and 1435°F for one hour …

Wireless Temperature Monitoring System For The Cal Poly Pilot Winery, Caitlin Devaney Jun 2012

Wireless Temperature Monitoring System For The Cal Poly Pilot Winery, Caitlin Devaney

Materials Engineering

This project, with an interdisciplinary group of two computer engineers and one materials engineer, was seeking to implement an automated temperature monitoring system which is affordable and easy to use, as well as adaptable to any arrangement and scale of a winemaker’s fermentation setup. My goal, as the materials engineer, was to design, fabricate, and test the enclosure, for the wireless nodes that are placed in the wine fermentation tanks, and the materials used for the node enclosure. For the enclosure of the system, materials selection was completed using CES software using limitations of only polymer materials which absorb less …

Electric Aircraft Propulsion System, Austin J. Doupe Jun 2012

Electric Aircraft Propulsion System, Austin J. Doupe

Aerospace Engineering

This report specifies the purpose, assembly, operation, and data collection of a testing apparatus to characterize small electric aircraft propulsion systems designed for commercial use. This apparatus was constructed with the goal of determining overall system characteristics and efficiencies. The apparatus was pushed to a safety limit as deemed by advisor John Dunning and the results of the experiment were an output power of 3.2kW (25% of max rated power) and a system efficiency of 58.6%, both of which occurred at 2200 RPM. Currently the apparatus needs improvement. It should have an upgraded structure to mount to (instead of the …
