Identification Of Proper And Common Names In The Anterior Temporal Lobe: An Fmri Study, Usha Tadimeti Jul 2012

Identification Of Proper And Common Names In The Anterior Temporal Lobe: An Fmri Study, Usha Tadimeti

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Temporal lobe epilepsy is a neurological disease that affects millions of individuals worldwide. They are usually treated through surgical resection of portions of the anterior temporal lobe (ATL). Surgical resection is effective for seizure control, but produces language and verbal memory deficits such as anomic aphasia, which adversely affects an individual's quality of life. The purpose of this study was to develop a functional MRI protocol for mapping the function of ATL in healthy subjects, and to better understand the role of the ATL and other regions of the semantic system. Such a protocol may ultimately be used by surgeons …

Effects Of Rare-Earth Doping On Femtosecond Laser Waveguide Writing In Zinc Polyphosphate Glass, Luke B. Fletcher, Jon J. Witcher, Neil Troy, Signo Tadeu Dos Reis, Richard K. Brow, Denise M. Krol Jul 2012

Effects Of Rare-Earth Doping On Femtosecond Laser Waveguide Writing In Zinc Polyphosphate Glass, Luke B. Fletcher, Jon J. Witcher, Neil Troy, Signo Tadeu Dos Reis, Richard K. Brow, Denise M. Krol

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have investigated waveguide writing in Er-Yb doped zinc polyphosphate glass using a femtosecond laser with a repetition rate of 1 KHz. We find that fabrication of good waveguides requires a glass composition with an O/P ratio of 3.25. The dependence on laser writing parameters including laser fluence, focusing conditions, and scan speed is reported. Waveguide properties together with absorption and emission data indicate that these glasses can be used for the fabrication of compact, high gain amplifying devices.

Joint Diagonalization Applied To The Detection And Discrimination Of Unexploded Ordnance, Fridon Shubitidze, Juan Pablo Fernández, Irma Shamatava, Benjamin Barrowes, Kevin O’Neill Jul 2012

Joint Diagonalization Applied To The Detection And Discrimination Of Unexploded Ordnance, Fridon Shubitidze, Juan Pablo Fernández, Irma Shamatava, Benjamin Barrowes, Kevin O’Neill

Dartmouth Scholarship

Efforts to discriminate buried unexploded ordnance from harmless surrounding clutter are often hampered by the uncertainty in the number of buried targets that produce a given detected signal. We present a technique that helps determine that number with no need for data inversion. The procedure is based on the joint diagonalization of a set of multistatic response (MSR) matrices measured at different time gates by a time-domain electromagnetic induction sensor. In particular, we consider the Naval Research Laboratory’s Time-Domain Electromagnetic Multisensor Towed Array Detection System (TEMTADS), which consists of a 5×5 square grid of concentric transmitter/receiver pairs. The diagonalization process …

Production And Characterization Of Biodegradable Nanofibers Via Forcespinning™ Technology, Zachary T. Mceachin

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Among the myriad of methods for polymer nanofiber production, there are only a few methods that can produce submicron range fibers in bulk from melt or solution samples. The Forcespinning™ method allows a substantial increase in sample yield; this greatly reduces the time needed to produce bulk quantities of fibers which may be critical in many fields of research and industry, in particularly in fields relating to biopolymers. The aim of the first study was to utilize this method to form non-woven mats of polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers and to quantitatively analyze the production and characterization of the produced fibers. The …

A healthy and efficient public transit system is indispensable to reduce congestion, emissions, energy consumption, and car dependency in urban areas. The objective of this research is to 1) develop methods to evaluate and visualize bus service reliability for transit agencies in various temporal and spatial aggregation levels; 2) identify the recurrent unreliability trends of bus routes (focusing on high-frequency service periods) and understand their characteristics, causes and effects; and 3) model service times using linear regression models.

This research utilized six months of archived automatic vehicle location (AVL) and automatic passenger count (APC) data from a low-performance route (Route …

Decision Support For Agent Populations In Uncertain And Congested Environments, Pradeep Reddy Varakantham, Shih-Fen Cheng, Geoff Gordon, Asrar Ahmed Jul 2012

Decision Support For Agent Populations In Uncertain And Congested Environments, Pradeep Reddy Varakantham, Shih-Fen Cheng, Geoff Gordon, Asrar Ahmed

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This research is motivated by large scale problems in urban transportation and labor mobility where there is congestion for resources and uncertainty in movement. In such domains, even though the individual agents do not have an identity of their own and do not explicitly interact with other agents, they effect other agents. While there has been much research in handling such implicit effects, it has primarily assumed deterministic movements of agents. We address the issue of decision support for individual agents that are identical and have involuntary movements in dynamic environments. For instance, in a taxi fleet serving a city, …

Computational Modeling Of Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes, Nathaniel Lee Miller Jul 2012

Computational Modeling Of Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes, Nathaniel Lee Miller

Theses and Dissertations

Ab initio self-consistent field (SCF) molecular orbital calculations were performed employing various basis sets to computationally predict methods to functionalize and solubilize carbon nanotubes. The structure and Restricted Hartree-Fock (RHF) or “total” energies of functionalized nanotubes of various configurations were determined via theoretical calculations. Total energies were used to determine preferences for adsorption on nanotube sur-faces. Various diameter carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were tested to determine where a transition from a non-wrapping to a wrapping approach was found likely to occur as a function of diameter. Further refinements to this method could be used to explore additional interactions as nanotube diameter …

Re-Evaluation Of Resistance Prediction For High-Speed Round Bilge Hull Forms, Jae Won

Theses and Dissertations

Predicting the resistance of a high-speed monohull has been of interest to Naval Architects for several decades. Even though considerable amount of research has been carried out in this area, there remains a degree of uncertainty in the accurate resistance prediction in the early design stage. This research thesis attempts to investigate a method for enhancing the accuracy of resistance prediction methods for high-speed round-bilge monohull form vessels for a wide range of volumetric Froude numbers (Fn). While a number of systematic series are in existence, their data are either not readily available or scattered in various internal reports and …

Real-Time Road Traffic Forecasting Using Regime-Switching Space-Time Models And Adaptive Lasso, Yiannis Kamarianakis, Wei Shen, Laura Wynter Jul 2012

Real-Time Road Traffic Forecasting Using Regime-Switching Space-Time Models And Adaptive Lasso, Yiannis Kamarianakis, Wei Shen, Laura Wynter

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Smart transportation technologies require real-time traffic prediction to be both fast and scalable to full urban networks. We discuss a method that is able to meet this challenge while accounting for nonlinear traffic dynamics and space-time dependencies of traffic variables. Nonlinearity is taken into account by a union of non-overlapping linear regimes characterized by a sequence of temporal thresholds. In each regime, for each measurement location, a penalized estimation scheme, namely the adaptive absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), is implemented to perform model selection and coefficient estimation simultaneously. Both the robust to outliers least absolute deviation estimates and conventional …

Rejoinder: Real-Time Road Traffic Forecasting Using Regime-Switching Space-Time Models And Adaptive Lasso, Yiannis Kamarianakis, Wei Shen, Laura Wynter

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Kamarianakis et al. presented a promising application of multivariate time series analysis to the traffic condition forecasting problem in urban transportation networks. Interest is keen and growing in providing accurate predictions of link and route travel conditions, especially in the context of the burgeoning demand for ‘real-time’ traveler information. Forecasts underlying this information must be sufficiently accurate for the traveler information provided to be of tangible value. As the authors clearly pointed out, although the near ubiquitous availability of urban traffic condition data makes area-wide forecasts theoretically possible, scalability to area-wide networks and the required speed of forecast generation represent …

Finite-Time Control And Estimation Of Nonlinear Systems With Disturbance Attenuation, Mohammad N. Elbsat

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation addresses the mixed criteria finite-time bounded controller and observer design of certain classes of nonlinear systems. Finite-time bounded controllers and observers are used to guarantee performance bounds on the transient response of the systems considered. A robust and resilient mixed criteria state-feedback controller design is developed for a class of nonlinear systems with conic-type nonlinearities lying within a hypersphere of uncertain center, additive disturbances, and controller gain perturbations in discrete and continuous-time. Furthermore, a robust and resilient mixed criteria state-dependent state-feedback controller design is developed for a class of nonlinear systems with state dependent system matrices and state-dependent …

Partial-Data Interpolation Method For Arc Handling In A Computed Tomography Scanner, Jaisingh Rajwade, Lester Miller, Daniel J. Simon Jul 2012

Partial-Data Interpolation Method For Arc Handling In A Computed Tomography Scanner, Jaisingh Rajwade, Lester Miller, Daniel J. Simon

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

X-ray tube arcing in computed tomography scanners causes poor image quality. During the time that the X-ray tube recovers to full voltage after an arc, image data is being collected. Normally this data, acquired at less than full voltage, is discarded and interpolation is performed over the arc duration. We have developed an algorithm that corrects for improper tube voltage, allowing previously discarded data to be used for imaging. The use of voltage corrected data provides improved image quality compared to simple interpolation methods. This improvement is relevant today as the imaging field uses faster scanners with shorter sampling times.

Using Life Cycle Assessment Methods To Guide Architectural Decision-Making For Sustainable Prefabricated Modular Buildings, Jeremy Faludi, Michael Lepech, George Loisos Jul 2012

Using Life Cycle Assessment Methods To Guide Architectural Decision-Making For Sustainable Prefabricated Modular Buildings, Jeremy Faludi, Michael Lepech, George Loisos

Dartmouth Scholarship

Within this work, life cycle assessment modeling is used to determine top design priorities and quantitatively inform sustainable design decision-making for a prefabricated modular building. A case-study life-cycle assessment was performed for a 5,000 ft2 prefabricated commercial building constructed in San Francisco, California, and scenario analysis was run examining the life cycle environmental impacts of various energy and material design substitutions, and a structural design change. Results show that even for a highly energy-efficient modular building, the top design priority is still minimizing operational energy impacts, since this strongly dominates the building life cycle's environmental impacts. However, as an …

This thesis discusses the feasibility and design behind a simple robotic skeleton that utilizes the Kinect to mimic human movements in near real-time. The goal of this project is to construct a 1/3-scale model of a robotically enhanced skeleton and demonstrate the abilities of the Kinect as a tool for human movement mimicry. The resulting robot was able to mimic many human movements but was mechanically …

The Effect Of Control And Display Lag On Uas Internal Pilot Manual Landing Performance, Marshall Everett Lloyd Jul 2012

The Effect Of Control And Display Lag On Uas Internal Pilot Manual Landing Performance, Marshall Everett Lloyd

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

An important characteristic of UASs is lag because it can become a considerable challenge to successful human-in-the-loop control. As such, UASs are designed and configured to minimize system lag, though this can increase acquisition and operation costs considerably. In an effort to cut costs, an organization may choose to accept greater risk and deploy a UAS with high system lag. Before this risk can be responsibly accepted, it must be quantified.

While many studies have examined system lag, very few have been able to quantify the risk that various levels of lag pose to an internally piloted, manually landed UAS. …

The Effects Of Familiarity And Persuasion On Risk Assessment, Casey L. Smith Jul 2012

The Effects Of Familiarity And Persuasion On Risk Assessment, Casey L. Smith

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Cognitive biases influence decisions and the analyses of risk. They are often derived from two separate processes: bias based on familiarity (familiarity bias) and bias as the result of influences from outside sources (persuasion bias). Research suggests that familiarity-based bias may lead to acceptance of an activity's drawbacks and a leniency of its risks.

In addition, research has tried to measure and analyze different types of biases individually, but few have compared the interactions of more than one bias at once. Because different biases may derive from different mental phenomena it is important to tease out the distinctions, and observe …

The Effects Of Expertise And Information Location On Change Blindness Detection Within An Aviation Domain, Dinorah Zárate Jul 2012

The Effects Of Expertise And Information Location On Change Blindness Detection Within An Aviation Domain, Dinorah Zárate

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Change blindness is a phenomenon where the viewer fails to detect change in an object or scene during a visual disturbance. During a flight, a pilot samples multiple displays for information about the task at hand. It is imperative that the changes in the displays are being correctly viewed by pilots to ensure a safe flight. However, it is unknown how much change blindness affects pilots or if pilot expertise plays a role in change detection.

A change blindness experiment was performed with twenty four participants divided into two groups based on expertise. Expert pilots were defined as instructor pilots …

Unconventional Uses Of Microcantilevers As Chemical Sensors In Gas And Liquid Media, I. Dufour, Fabien Josse, Stephen M. Heinrich, C. Lucat, C. Ayela, F. Ménil, O. Brand Jul 2012

Unconventional Uses Of Microcantilevers As Chemical Sensors In Gas And Liquid Media, I. Dufour, Fabien Josse, Stephen M. Heinrich, C. Lucat, C. Ayela, F. Ménil, O. Brand

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The use of microcantilevers as (bio)chemical sensors usually involves the application of a chemically sensitive layer. The coated device operates either in a static bending regime or in a dynamic flexural mode. While some of these coated devices may be operated successfully in both the static and the dynamic modes, others may suffer from certain shortcomings depending on the type of coating, the medium of operation and the sensing application. Such shortcomings include lack of selectivity and reversibility of the sensitive coating and a reduced quality factor due to the surrounding medium. In particular, the performance of microcantilevers excited in …

Development Of In Vitro Tissue Engineered Blood Vessel Mimics In Complex Geometries For Coronary Stent Testing, Robert Dalton Chavez Jul 2012

Development Of In Vitro Tissue Engineered Blood Vessel Mimics In Complex Geometries For Coronary Stent Testing, Robert Dalton Chavez

Master's Theses

Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and occurs when plaque occludes coronary arteries. Coronary stents, which may be used to treat coronary occlusions, are small metal tubes that are implanted in coronary arteries to restore blood flow. After stent implantation, endothelial cells grow over the stent so that blood contacts the endothelial cells instead of the stent surface; this event is known as re-endothelialization. Re-endothelialization prevents blood from clotting on the stent surface and is a good predictor of stent success. Blood vessel mimics (BVMs) are in vitro tissue engineered models of human …

Characterization Of Tight Junction Formation In An In-Vitro Model Of The Blood-Brain Barrier, Michael Robert Machado Jul 2012

Characterization Of Tight Junction Formation In An In-Vitro Model Of The Blood-Brain Barrier, Michael Robert Machado

Master's Theses

Active and passive transport of substances between the microcirculation in the brain and the central nervous system is regulated by the Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB). This barrier allows for chronic and acute modulation of the CNS microenvironment, and protects the brain from potentially noxious compounds carried in the circulatory system. In-vitro modeling of the BBB has become the target of much research over the past decade, as there are many unanswered questions regarding modulations in the permeability of this barrier. Additionally, the development of a practical and inexpensive model of the BBB would facilitate a much more efficient drug development process. …

Development And Characterization Of An In-House Custom Bioreactor For The Cultivation Of A Tissue Engineered Blood-Brain Barrier, Amin Hadi Mirzaaghaeian Jul 2012

Development And Characterization Of An In-House Custom Bioreactor For The Cultivation Of A Tissue Engineered Blood-Brain Barrier, Amin Hadi Mirzaaghaeian

Master's Theses

The development of treatments for neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease begins by understanding what these diseases affect and the consequences of further manifestation. One particular region where these diseases can produce substantial problems is the blood-brain barrier (BBB). The BBB is the selective diffusion barrier between the circulating blood and the brain. The barrier’s main function is to maintain CNS homeostasis and protect the brain from the extracellular environment. The progression of BBB research has advanced to the point where many have modeled the BBB in vitro with aims of further characterizing and testing the barrier. Particularly, …
