Low-Complexity Soft-Decision Feedback Turbo Equalization For Mimo Systems With Multilevel Modulations, Amirhossein Rafati, Huang Lou, Chengshan Xiao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Many communication systems today encounter the problem of data transmission over a channel with InterSymbol interference (ISI). the purpose of this paper is to develop a low-complexity iterative soft-decision feedback equalization (SDFE) receiver for severe frequency-selective ISI channels in multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems. the proposed SDFE algorithm offers a novel approach to combat error propagation. in addition, its computational complexity only linearly grows with the number of equalizer coefficients, compared with the quadratic complexity of minimum mean square error (MMSE)-Based linear turbo equalizer with time-varying coefficients. the performance of the proposed detection scheme is verified through simulations using different signal …

This report focuses on the design of a university knowledge management system (KMS), and how such a system can provide the framework for students and faculty to partake in, share, and collaborate on research activities. The collaborative environment of a university KMS, or research network, must be established in order for a university to maintain its reputation as a competitive research institution and to develop its faculty and students outside the classroom. A research network may contain a variety of features, some of which include faculty profiles, forums, communication portals, publication links, biographies, faculty keywords, interest areas and contact information. …
California Polytechnic State University Wind Resource Assessment, Jason Allan Smith
California Polytechnic State University Wind Resource Assessment, Jason Allan Smith
Master's Theses
Wind resource assessment at California Polytechnic State University shows there is potential for wind power generation on Cal Poly land. A computational fluid dynamics model based on wind data collected from a campus maintained meteorological tower on Escuela Ranch approximately 5 miles northwest of campus suggests there are areas of Cal Poly land with an IEC Class III wind resource at a height of 80 meters above ground. In addition during the daytime when the campus uses the most energy there are large portions of land with annual average daytime wind speeds above 6.9m/s. These areas have been identified by …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Photovoltaic characteristics of a low bandgap polymer, poly[(4,4′-bis(2-lethylhexyl)dithieno-[3,2-b:2′,3′-d]silole)-2,6-diyl-alt-(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)-4,7-diyl], based bulk hetero-junction organic photovoltaic were investigated from room temperature (RT) to 145 °C to evaluate its applications in harsh environments. The power conversion efficiency was found to increase from 4.1% at RT to 4.5% at 105 °C with increased short circuit current density (Jsc) and fill factor (FF) despite the decreased open circuit voltage (Voc). Detailed investigation revealed that Jsc and FF improvements were caused by the increased and balanced carrier mobilities at higher temperatures. The Voc of the low bandgap …

Background. Atherosclerotic plaque in the descending thoracic aorta (dAo) is related to altered wall shear stress (WSS) for normal patients. Resection with end-to-end anastomosis (RWEA) is the gold standard for coarctation of the aorta (CoA) repair, but may lead to altered WSS indices that contribute to morbidity.
Methods. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models were created from imaging and blood pressure data for control subjects and age- and gender-matched CoA patients treated by RWEA (four males, two females, 15 ± 8 years). CFD analysis incorporated downstream vascular resistance and compliance to generate blood flow velocity, time-averaged WSS (TAWSS), and oscillatory shear …

Testing, Modelling And Validation Of Numerical Model Capable Of Predicting Stress Fields Throughout Polyurethane Foam, Conor Briody, Barry Duignan, Stephen Jerrams
Conference Papers
Wheelchair seating systems are specialised for a number of reasons as users can have impaired mobility, which increases the possibility of pressure build up. These areas of high pressure frequently occur in the trunk region under the bony prominences known as the Ischial Tuberosities (IT), pressure ulcers may occur consequently. Polyurethane foam has been in use for some time in wheelchair seating systems as it exhibits good pressure relieving capabilities in most cases. However, little quantitative research has gone into foamed polymers, in comparison with conventional elastomeric materials. This lack of knowledge can ultimately lead to more time being spent …
Formative Assessment Practices In Built Environment Higher Education Programmes And The Enhancement Of The Student Learning Experience, Lloyd Scott, Chrisopher Fortune
Formative Assessment Practices In Built Environment Higher Education Programmes And The Enhancement Of The Student Learning Experience, Lloyd Scott, Chrisopher Fortune
Conference papers
It is widely accepted across Higher Education (HE) that assessment has a strong link with learning and a key factor in this link is formative assessment. Formative assessment is generally defined as an activity taking place during a programme or unit of learning with the express purpose of improving and enhancing student learning. However, there is still considerable disagreement over the roles of lecturers and students in this process. It is therefore very important to understand how lecturers in built environment (BE) undergraduate education perceive their own roles and the role of their students in using assessment strategy to deliver …

Segmentation Of Non-Stationary Gene Expression Profiles Using Statistical Sequential Analysis, Jasmine Pahari
Segmentation Of Non-Stationary Gene Expression Profiles Using Statistical Sequential Analysis, Jasmine Pahari
Theses and Dissertations
Due to the dynamic nature of biological systems, gene expression data underlying temporal processes, such as the cell development or a disease progression, can exhibit significant regime changes to facilitate regulatory functions. Deciphering these dynamical changes is crucial to understanding the biological function and developing time-varying models of cellular evolution. In this thesis, we propose to detect the different dynamical regimes of gene expression profiles using statistical sequential analysis. The proposed algorithm segments the gene time-series into distinct homogeneous regimes of expression, during which the underlying dynamics of the gene can be assumed to be stationary. Finding the switch point …
Stoichiometric H2ice With Water Injection And Exhaust And Coolant Heat Recovery Through Organic Rankine Cycles, Alberto Boretti
Stoichiometric H2ice With Water Injection And Exhaust And Coolant Heat Recovery Through Organic Rankine Cycles, Alberto Boretti
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
High power density, stoichiometric, turbocharged, directly injected engines with water injection and a three-way catalytic converter after treatment have been proposed as one of the most promising H2ICE [1]. These throttle-controlled engines have top brake efficiencies exceeding 40%, but large penalties in efficiency reducing the load with 1 bar BMEP values approaching 10%. Recovery of the large amount of fuel energy lost in the coolant especially at low loads as well as the fuel energy lost in the exhaust that is significant at high loads and speeds may push not only the top brake efficiencies to exceed the 45% mark, …
Opportunistic Validation Of Sulfur Dioxide In The Sarychev Peak Volcanic Eruption Cloud, S. Carn, T. M. Lopez
Opportunistic Validation Of Sulfur Dioxide In The Sarychev Peak Volcanic Eruption Cloud, S. Carn, T. M. Lopez
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
We report attempted validation of Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) sulfur dioxide (SO 2) retrievals in the stratospheric volcanic cloud from Sarychev Peak (Kurile Islands) in June 2009, through opportunistic deployment of a ground-based ultraviolet (UV) spectrometer (FLYSPEC) as the volcanic cloud drifted over central Alaska. The volcanic cloud altitude (∼12-14 km) was constrained using coincident CALIPSO lidar observations. By invoking some assumptions about the spatial distribution of SO 2, we derive averages of FLYSPEC vertical SO 2 columns for comparison with OMI SO 2 measurements. Despite limited data, we find minimum OMI-FLYSPEC differences within measurement uncertainties, which support the validity …

Flow Characteristics Of The Renovated Cal Poly 3 X 4 Ft Subsonic Wind Tunnel, Mathew L. Thomas, Dorian V. Pandey, Jason N. Nguyen
Flow Characteristics Of The Renovated Cal Poly 3 X 4 Ft Subsonic Wind Tunnel, Mathew L. Thomas, Dorian V. Pandey, Jason N. Nguyen
Aerospace Engineering
This paper investigates the flow characteristics of the renovated Cal Poly 3 x 4 ft subsonic wind tunnel. The IFA 300 constant-temperature anemometer along with a cross-plane X-wire dual-sensor probe was used to measure the mean velocity and turbulence intensity of the tunnel flow and part of the turbulent boundary layer at one section of the tunnel. Because of the malfunction of one channel of the IFA 300, only one wire of the dual sensor probe was calibrated for the measurements. The probe was then placed in a streamlined probe holder mounting on the traverse inside the wind tunnel. The …
Model-Driven Productivity Evaluation For Self-Adaptive Context-Oriented Software Development, Basel Magableh, Stephen Barrett
Model-Driven Productivity Evaluation For Self-Adaptive Context-Oriented Software Development, Basel Magableh, Stephen Barrett
Articles
Anticipating context changes using a model-based approach requires a formal procedure for analysing and mod- elling their context-dependent functionality, and a stable descrip- tion of the architecture which supports dynamic decision-making and architecture evolution. This article demonstrates the capabil- ities of the context-oriented component-based application-model- driven architecture (COCA-MDA) to support the development of self-adaptive applications; we describe a state-of-the-art case study and evaluate the development effort involved in adopting the COCA-MDA in constructing the application. An intensive analysis of the application requirements simplified the process of modelling the application’s behavioural model; therefore, instead of modelling several variation models, the developers …

Targeting Breast Cancer Detection With Communications Technology, Hacer Varol
Theses and Dissertations
Breast cancer continues to be a significant public health problem in the United States: It is the second leading cause of female mortality, and, disturbingly, one out of eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her life time. Until the cause of this disease is fully understood, early detection remains the only hope to improve prognosis and treatment. In this thesis, the tumor detection problem in breast images is formulated as a hypothesis testing problem, where the signal of interest is the tumor and the noise refers to the healthy tissue in the breast. …

Planned Tournament Selection, Douglas Mccorkle, Daniel Ashlock, Steven Corns, Kenneth Mark Bryden
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Tournament selection is a versatile method of selection and replacement used in evolutionary computation. Normally tournaments are chosen uniformly at random. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of planning tournaments in advance to control information flow within a population being evolved for optimization. Tests are performed on a variety of evolutionary test problems, finding that different planned tournament schemes yield significant differences in performance. the correct type of planned tournament is found to be problem dependent. in addition to a linear-function scheme for planning tournaments, this study also introduces a technique called multi-deme planned tournaments selection which permits simpler cases of …

Cascaded Microwave Network Approach For Power And Signal Integrity Analysis Of Multilayer Electronic Packages, Zaw Zaw Oo, En Xiao Liu, Xing Chang Wei, Yaojiang Zhang, Er Ping Li
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, an efficient cascaded microwave network approach is presented for power and signal integrity analysis of multilayer printed-circuit boards (PCBs) and advanced electronic packages with multiple signal traces, multiple power-ground plates, multiple vias, and external loads such as decoupling capacitors. Each parallel-plate pair, which consists of two consecutive conductor plates functioning as either power or ground in the PCBs or packages, is modeled as one individual microwave network. Equivalent circuits are used in the microwave network to model the vias, and a parallel-plate impedance matrix is formulated to account for the wave interactions between the vias and the …

Electron Transport Through Two Irreducibly-Coupled Aharonov-Bohm Rings With Applications To Nanostructure Quantum Computing Circuits, C. A. Cain, Cheng-Hsiao Wu
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We investigated several classes of two coupled Aharonov-Bohm rings that share a finite center common path, where the phase of the electron wave function can be modulated by two distinct magnetic fluxes. The coupling is similar to two coupled atoms. The behavior of charge accumulation along the center common path or, equivalently, the bonding and anti-bonding of the two rings can be achieved as the two applied fluxes are varied. Thus, when three external terminals are connected to such coupled rings, the behavior of the electron transport is divided into several classes, depending on the number of atoms in each …
Digital Watermarking Security, Jonathan Blake, Shahram Latifi
Digital Watermarking Security, Jonathan Blake, Shahram Latifi
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
As creative works (e.g. books, films, music, photographs) become increasingly available in digital formats in a highly connected world, it also becomes increasingly difficult to secure intellectual property rights. Digital watermarking is one potential technology to aid intellectual property owners in controlling and tracking the use of their works. Surveys the state of digital watermarking research and examines the attacks that the technology faces and how it fares against them. Digital watermarking is an inherently difficult design problem subject to many constraints. The technology currently faces an uphill battle to be secure against relatively simple attacks.

A Further Look At The 'Reactance Of A Parallel Rlc Circuit', Kenneth V. Cartwright, Edit J. Kaminsky
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications
We show that the maximum impedance of the parallel combination of a resistor R, an inductor L and capacitor C, studied in a previous paper can be found analytically, without using calculus. In fact, we show that the maximum impedance of this parallel combination is just the value of the resistor R and occurs when the driving frequency is equal to 1/ . o LC These results were only demonstrated graphically in the aforementioned paper. We also provide PSpice simulations which verify the theoretical predictions.

Secure Wireless Communication And Optimal Power Control Under Statistical Queueing Constraints, Deli Qiao, M. Cenk Gursoy, Senem Velipasalar
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
In this paper, secure transmission of information over fading broadcast channels is studied in the presence of statistical queueing constraints. Effective capacity is employed as a performance metric to identify the secure throughput of the system, i.e., effective secure throughput. It is assumed that perfect channel side information (CSI) is available at both the transmitter and the receivers. Initially, the scenario in which the transmitter sends common messages to two receivers and confidential messages to one receiver is considered. For this case, the effective secure throughput region, which is the region of constant arrival rates of common and …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Highly Textured Pt–Bi Thin Films, Xingzhong Li, Parashu Kharel, Shah R. Valloppilly, David J. Sellmyer
Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications
Pt–Bi films were synthesized on glass and thermally oxidized silicon substrates by e-beam evaporation and annealing. The structures were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy/selected area electron diffraction (TEM/SAED) techniques. Single-phase PtBi was obtained at an annealing temperature of 300°C, whereas a higher annealing temperature of 400°C was required to obtain the highly textured γ-PtBi2 phase. TEM/SAED analysis showed that the films annealed at 400°C contain a dominant γ-PtBi2 phase with a small amount of β-PtBi2 and α-PtBi2 phases. Both the PtBi and γ-PtBi2 phases are highly textured in these two kinds of film: the c-axis of …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
Ferromagnetic resonance investigations on Ni nanowires are reported. The angular dependence of the resonance line position is analyzed within a thermodynamic approach that includes shape anisotropy (ellipsoids of revolution), magnetocrystalline anisotropies (cubic and uniaxial), and dipole–dipole interactions. The results are supported by hysteresis loops, obtained on the same sample.

Non-Stationary Internal Tides Observed With Satellite Altimetry, Richard D. Ray, Edward D. Zaron
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Temporal variability of the internal tide is inferred from a 17-year combined record of Topex/Poseidon and Jason satellite altimeters. A global sampling of along-track sea-surface height wavenumber spectra finds that non-stationary variance is generally 25% or less of the average variance at wavenumbers characteristic of mode-1 tidal internal waves. With some exceptions the non-stationary variance does not exceed 0.25 cm2. The mode-2 signal, where detectable, contains a larger fraction of non-stationary variance, typically 50% or more. Temporal subsetting of the data reveals interannual variability barely significant compared with tidal estimation error from 3-year records. Comparison of summer vs. winter conditions …

There is broad consensus regarding the health impact of tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure, yet considerable ambiguity exists about the nature and consequences of thirdhand smoke (THS). We introduce definitions of THS and THS exposure and review recent findings about constituents, indoor sorption-desorption dynamics, and transformations of THS; distribution and persistence of THS in residential settings; implications for pathways of exposure; potential clinical significance and health effects; and behavioral and policy issues that affect and are affected by THS. Physical and chemical transformations of tobacco smoke pollutants take place over time scales ranging from seconds to months and include …
