The Effects Of Mental Training On Brain Computer Interface Performance With Distractions, John Larocco Sep 2011

The Effects Of Mental Training On Brain Computer Interface Performance With Distractions, John Larocco

Theses and Dissertations

The overall success of a brain computer interface (BCI) is largely dependent on the features used to make decisions. Noise in the electroencephalography (EEG) increases the difficulty of acquiring meaningful features. Previous literature suggests teaching subjects meditation and relaxation techniques may improve features relevant to BCI operation. The purpose of this study was to investigate performance on several cognitive protocols for both individuals who use meditation techniques and those who do not use these techniques. Both groups were given a motor imagery based BCI protocol, a P300 speller BCI, a verbal learning task, and an N-back test. No significant difference …

Phospholipid Transport In Silicon Hydrogel Contact Lenses, Yibei Zhao Sep 2011

Phospholipid Transport In Silicon Hydrogel Contact Lenses, Yibei Zhao

Theses and Dissertations

Dry eye syndrome has been associated with the lack of phospholipids in the tear film, leading to disruption of the tear film and subsequent irritation. Characterization of the transport and release of phospholipids from a silicone hydrogel contact lens is required to assess the possible use of these lenses for phospholipid delivery to increase patient comfort. This thesis examines the use of silicone hydrogel contact lenses as phospholipid delivery devices. Contact lenses of silicone hydrogel composition were loaded with varying amounts of radiolabeled 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC) from a solution of n-propanol. These lenses were eluted at 35°C into artificial …

Correction Factors For An Analytical Method Of Pile Foundation Response Subjected To Horizontal Dynamic Vibrations, Domenica Cambio, Louis Ge Sep 2011

Correction Factors For An Analytical Method Of Pile Foundation Response Subjected To Horizontal Dynamic Vibrations, Domenica Cambio, Louis Ge

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In pile foundation response due to horizontal vibration, it is known that the original Novak's method overestimates the dominant frequency and underestimates the dominant amplitude of pile head responses. It is found that reducing the pile-foundation system stiffness and damping coefficients would lead to a smaller dominant frequency and higher dominant amplitude, respectively. the objective of this paper is to evaluate and determine appropriate correction factors for stiffness and damping coefficients for the analytical model developed by Novak and El-Sharnouby (1983) to improve the theoretical predictions of pile foundations subjected to dynamic forces. the reduction factors were determined by continuously …

Accelerated Construction For Pedestrian Bridges: A Comparison Between High Strength Concrete (Hsc) And High-Strength Self Consolidating Concrete (Hs-Scc), John J. Myers, Kurt Bloch

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

High-strength concrete (HSC) and glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars are materials utilized in bridge construction to lower cost, reduce construction time, and increase service life of bridge structures. Recently, high-strength self-consolidating concrete (HS-SCC), a highly flowable concrete that does not require vibration, has been developed as a viable alternative to HSC for use in situations with congested steel or a need for rapid construction. Coupling HS-SCC with GFRP bars could create durable structures built rapidly. Several performance related issues remain to be investigated such as the behavior of prestress loss, shear, creep, shrinkage, thermal gradients, mechanical property development, time …

Quantitative Analysis Of The Disorder Broadening And The Intrinsic Gap For The V=5/2 Fractional Quantum Hall State, N. Samkharadze, J. D. Watson, G. Gardner, Michael J. Manfra, L. N. Pfeiffer, K. W. West, G. A. Csathy

Birck and NCN Publications

We report a reliable method to estimate the disorder broadening parameter from the scaling of the gaps of the even and major odd denominator fractional quantum Hall states of the second Landau level. We apply this technique to several samples of vastly different densities and grown in different molecular beam epitaxy chambers. Excellent agreement is found between the estimated intrinsic and numerically obtained energy gaps for the v = 5/2 fractional quantum Hall state. Furthermore, we quantify the dependence of the intrinsic gap at v = 5/2 on Landau-level mixing.

Accurate Estimation Of Isoform And Gene Expression Levels From Next Generation Sequencing Data, Marius Nicolae Sep 2011

Accurate Estimation Of Isoform And Gene Expression Levels From Next Generation Sequencing Data, Marius Nicolae

Master's Theses

Massively parallel transcriptome sequencing is quickly replacing microarrays as the technology of choice for performing gene expression profiling due to its wider dynamic range and digital quantitation capabilities. However, accurate estimation of expression levels from sequencing data remains challenging due to the short read length delivered by current sequencing technologies and still poorly understood protocol- and technology-specific biases.

To date, two main transcriptome sequencing protocols have been proposed in the literature. The most commonly used one, referred to as RNA-Seq, generates short (single or paired) sequencing tags from the ends of randomly generated cDNA fragments. An alternative protocol, referred to …

A Parametric Analysis Of Microbolometer Pixel Designs, Matthew J. Dumas, Brian A. Lail

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

As microbolometer pixel dimensions for infrared imagers continue to decrease, the need for full-wave analysis in the design process is enhanced. Using reflectance as the validation point, an electromagnetic model of a dual-layer microbolometer pixel design was created for a 25 μm pixel design, and an in-depth study of the design was performed. With this model validated, further explorations were completed with a reduced size pixel. While simulating multiple variations of specific parameters, such as bridge thickness, upper and lower cavity heights, and different absorber configurations, a new evaluation metric of dissipated power in the structure was studied. This metric, …

Stochastic Real-Time Optimal Control: A Pseudospectral Approach For Bearing-Only Trajectory Optimization, Steven M. Ross

Theses and Dissertations

A method is presented to couple and solve the optimal control and the optimal estimation problems simultaneously, allowing systems with bearing-only sensors to maneuver to obtain observability for relative navigation without unnecessarily detracting from a primary mission. A fundamentally new approach to trajectory optimization and the dual control problem is developed, constraining polynomial approximations of the Fisher Information Matrix to provide an information gradient and allow prescription of the level of future estimation certainty required for mission accomplishment. Disturbances, modeling deficiencies, and corrupted measurements are addressed with recursive updating of the target estimate with an Unscented Kalman Filter and the …

Distributed Spacing Stochastic Feature Selection And Its Application To Textile Classification, Jeffrey D. Clark Sep 2011

Distributed Spacing Stochastic Feature Selection And Its Application To Textile Classification, Jeffrey D. Clark

Theses and Dissertations

Many situations require the need to quickly and accurately locate dismounted individuals in a variety of environments. In conjunction with other dismount detection techniques, being able to detect and classify clothing (textiles) provides a more comprehensive and complete dismount characterization capability. Because textile classification depends on distinguishing between different material types, hyperspectral data, which consists of several hundred spectral channels sampled from a continuous electromagnetic spectrum, is used as a data source. However, a hyperspectral image generates vast amounts of information and can be computationally intractable to analyze. A primary means to reduce the computational complexity is to use feature …

Critical Information Technology On Fpgas Through Unique Device Specific Keys, Miles E. Mcgee Sep 2011

Critical Information Technology On Fpgas Through Unique Device Specific Keys, Miles E. Mcgee

Theses and Dissertations

Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are being used for military and other sensitive applications, the threat of an adversary attacking these devices is an ever present danger. While having the ability to be reconfigured is helpful for development, it also poses the risk of its hardware design being cloned. Static random access memory (SRAM) FPGA's are the most common type of FPGA used in industry. Every time an SRAM-FPGA is powered up, its configuration must be downloaded. If an adversary is able to obtain that configuration, they can clone sensitive designs to other FPGAs. A technique that can be used …

Integrated Approach To Free Space Optical Communications In Strong Turbulence, Jason A. Tellez Sep 2011

Integrated Approach To Free Space Optical Communications In Strong Turbulence, Jason A. Tellez

Theses and Dissertations

The propagation of a free space optical communication signal through atmospheric turbulence experiences random fluctuations in intensity, including signal fades which negatively impact the communications link performance. This research develops an analytical probability density function (PDF) to model the best case scenario of using multiple independent beams to reduce the intensity fluctuations. The PDF was further developed to account for partially correlated beams, such as would be experienced by beams having finite separation. The PDF was validated with results obtained from digital simulations as well as lab experiments. The research showed that as the number of transmitted beams increases the …

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of our research is to develop an improved methodology for classifying players (identifying deviant players such as terrorists) through multivariate analysis of data from avatar characteristics and behaviors in massive multiplayer online games (MMOGs). To build our classification models, we developed three significant enhancements to the standard Generalized Regression Neural Networks (GRNN) modeling method. The first enhancement is a feature selection technique based on GRNNs, allowing us to tailor our feature set to be best modeled by GRNNs. The second enhancement is a hybrid GRNN which allows each feature to be modeled by a GRNN tailored to its …

Productivity Evaluation Of Self-Adaptive Software Model Driven Architecture, Basel Magableh Sep 2011

Productivity Evaluation Of Self-Adaptive Software Model Driven Architecture, Basel Magableh

Articles

Anticipating context changes using a model-based approach requires a formal procedure for analysing and modelling context-dependent functionality and stable description of the architecture which supports dynamic decision-making and architecture evolution. This article demonstrates the capabilities of the context-oriented component-based application-model-driven architecture (COCA-MDA) to support the development of self- adaptive applications; the authors describe a state-of-the-art case study and evaluate the development effort involved in adopting the COCA-MDA in constructing the application. An intensive analysis of the applica- tion requirements simplified the process of modelling the application’s behavioural model; therefore, instead of modelling several variation models, the developers modelled an extra-functionality …

This thesis addresses two primary concerns relating to Directed Energy (DE) models and tests: need for more use of Design of Experiment (DOE) in structuring DE models and tests, and lack of modeling atmospheric variability in High Energy Laser (HEL) weapon system propagation models and tests. To address these concerns we use a DOE factorial design to capture main, interaction, and non-linear effects between modeled weapon design and environmental factors in a well defined simulated Air-to-Ground HEL engagement scenario. The scenario modeled considers a B1-B aircraft in the 2022 timeframe equipped with an HEL weapon, irradiating a ground target from …

Design And Control Of Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicles, Michael L. Anderson Sep 2011

Design And Control Of Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicles, Michael L. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Flapping wing Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) continues to be a growing field, with ongoing research into unsteady, low Re aerodynamics, micro-fabrication, and fluid-structure interaction. However, research into flapping wing control of such MAVs continues to lag. Existing research uniformly consists of proposed control laws that are validated by computer simulations of quasi-steady blade-element formulae. Such simulations use numerous assumptions and cannot be trusted to fully describe the flow physics. Instead, such control laws must be validated on hardware. Here, a novel control technique is proposed called Bi-harmonic Amplitude and Bias Modulation (BABM) which can generate forces and moments in 5 …

Evaluation Of Nanocomposites For Shielding Electromagnetic Interference, Kenneth Y. Chong Sep 2011

Evaluation Of Nanocomposites For Shielding Electromagnetic Interference, Kenneth Y. Chong

Theses and Dissertations

Numerous efforts are ongoing to research and develop nanocomposite materials for space applications. Current composite spacecraft materials are nonconductive and require costly shielding materials to be applied in order to protect spacecraft from the harmful effects caused by electromagnetic interference (EMI), which is a by-product of exposure to the space environment. Conductive fillers (nanofibers) are being employed in composites to produce nanocomposites to reduce the dry weight of space vehicles while providing sufficient protection against EMI. This eliminates the need to apply secondary shielding materials to spacecraft. This thesis studied a nanocomposite consisting of Cycom 5575-2 glass with multi-walled carbon …

Development Of Optimal Controllers For A Dfig Based Wind Farm In A Smart Grid Under Variable Wind Speed Conditions, Priyam Chakravarty, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy Sep 2011

Development Of Optimal Controllers For A Dfig Based Wind Farm In A Smart Grid Under Variable Wind Speed Conditions, Priyam Chakravarty, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Variations in wind speed cause different transient responses in a Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG)-Based wind farm. Transients during grid disturbances, depending on controller parameters, can lead to a system collapse, especially when significant fluctuations exist in wind speed despite the presence of SmartParks (energy storage). When a fault is introduced, the variable frequency converter (VFC) is the most susceptible part in a DFIG. the VFC is controlled by a set of Proportional Integral (PI) controllers. Parameters of PI controllers are very difficult to tune using traditional methods due to nonlinearity in DFIGs and the increasing complexity of smart grids. …

Low Complexity Feature Extraction For Classification Of Harmonic Signals, Peter William Sep 2011

Low Complexity Feature Extraction For Classification Of Harmonic Signals, Peter William

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In this dissertation, feature extraction algorithms have been developed for extraction of characteristic features from harmonic signals. The common theme for all developed algorithms is the simplicity in generating a significant set of features directly from the time domain harmonic signal. The features are a time domain representation of the composite, yet sparse, harmonic signature in the spectral domain. The algorithms are adequate for low-power unattended sensors which perform sensing, feature extraction, and classification in a stand-alone scenario. The first algorithm generates the characteristic features using only the duration between successive zero-crossing intervals. The second algorithm estimates the harmonics’ amplitudes of …
