Pyrolysis Kinetics Of A Green River Oil Shale Using A Pressurized Tga, James L. Hillier, Thomas H. Fletcher Jan 2011

Pyrolysis Kinetics Of A Green River Oil Shale Using A Pressurized Tga, James L. Hillier, Thomas H. Fletcher

Faculty Publications

Crushed samples of Green River Oil Shale and its kerogen extract were pyrolyzed at heating rates from 1 to 10 K/min at pressures of 1 and 40 bar and temperatures up to 1000 C. Two to four mass release peaks were observed with the major two corresponding to kerogen pyrolysis and carbonate decomposition. The transient pyrolysis data were fit with a first-order model and a Distributed Activation Energy Model (DAEM). An F-test was used to determine confidence regions and compare the kinetic parameters among the oil shale and demineralized samples, between the two pressure levels, and between the models. The …

Vibration Diagnosis Of Elastic Shafts With A Transverse Crack, Cai Zhongyi Jan 2011

Vibration Diagnosis Of Elastic Shafts With A Transverse Crack, Cai Zhongyi

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Detection of the shaft crack in a rotating machine is one of the most challenging problems in equipment predictive maintenance. In the available literature, various crack detection methods have been applied to study the dynamic behaviour of a cracked shaft. This study sought to attempt a vibration-based method. Elastic shafts with three different types of transverse cracks, including experimentally-induced fatigue crack, welded shaft crack, and wire-cut crack, were fabricated, and used to analyse the bending stiffness and frequency response in the vertical direction. The results from the cracked shafts were compared with that of an intact shaft. Bending stiffness of …

Sensory Motor Remapping Of Space In Human-Machine Interfaces, Ferdinando A. Mussa-Ivaldi, Maura Casadio, Zachary C. Danziger, Kristine M. Mosier, Robert A. Scheidt

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Studies of adaptation to patterns of deterministic forces have revealed the ability of the motor control system to form and use predictive representations of the environment. These studies have also pointed out that adaptation to novel dynamics is aimed at preserving the trajectories of a controlled endpoint, either the hand of a subject or a transported object. We review some of these experiments and present more recent studies aimed at understanding how the motor system forms representations of the physical space in which actions take place. An extensive line of investigations in visual information processing has dealt with the issue …

A Shock Tube Technique For Blast Wave Simulation And Studies Of Flow Structure Interactions In Shock Tube Blast Experiments, Nicholas N. Kleinschmit Jan 2011

A Shock Tube Technique For Blast Wave Simulation And Studies Of Flow Structure Interactions In Shock Tube Blast Experiments, Nicholas N. Kleinschmit

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Improvised explosive devices (IED’s) are widely used against US and allied forces fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Exposure to IED blast may cause blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI). The injury mechanisms are however not well understood. A critical need in bTBI-related research is the ability to replicate the loading conditions of IED blast waves in a laboratory environment. In this work, experimental studies have been carried out to explore the use of the shock tube technique for generating air shock waves that mimic the temporal and spatial characteristics of free-field blast waves and to investigate the blast wave-test sample interactions …

Evaluation Of The Iqa Delay Estimation Method, Yaye Keita, Mitsuru Saito

CUTR Faculty Journal Publications

The Incremental Queue Accumulation (IQA) method is the new delay estimation method for signalized intersections adopted for the Highway Capacity Manual 2010. Using a signalized intersection and a remote data collection facility, the IQA method was evaluated for its accuracy and for potential challenges that practitioners may encounter as they use the new method. The results were compared with delays obtained by the delay estimation models included in the Highway Capacity Manual 2000. It was found that the IQA method was promising and theoretically more robust than the current delay estimation model, but field data collection could be challenging. © …

Development Of Novel Copolyoxetanes: Antimicrobial Agents, Allison King Jan 2011

Development Of Novel Copolyoxetanes: Antimicrobial Agents, Allison King

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on solution antimicrobial effectiveness for copolyoxetanes with quaternary ammonium and PEG-like side chains. Ring opening copolymerization of 3-((4-bromobutoxy)methyl)-3-methyloxetane (BBOx) and 3-((2-(2-methoxyethoxy) ethoxy) methyl)-3-methyloxetane (ME2Ox) yielded random copolymers with 14-100 (m) mole% BBOx designated P[(BBOx-m)(ME2Ox)]. Reaction of P[(BBOx-m)(ME2Ox)] with dodecyl dimethylamine gave the corresponding quaternary P[(C12-m)(ME2Ox)] polycation salts, designated C12-m. Mole ratios and molecular weights were obtained from 1H-NMR and end group analysis. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies showed Tg’s between 69 and -34 °C. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa showed MIC decreasing with increasing C12 mole% reaching a minimum between …

End-To-End Communication Delay Analysis In Wirelesshart Networks, Abusayeed Saifullah, You Xu, Chenyang Lu, Yixin Chen

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

WirelessHART is a new standard specifically designed for real-time and reliable communication between sensor and actuator devices for industrial process monitoring and control applications. End-to-end communication delay analysis for WirelessHART networks is required to determine the schedulability of real-time data flows from sensors to actuators for the purpose of acceptance test or workload adjustment in response to network dynamics. In this paper, we map the scheduling of real-time periodic data flows in a WirelessHART network to real-time multiprocessor scheduling. We then exploit the response time analysis for multiprocessor scheduling and propose a novel method for the delay analysis that establishes …

Flux Balance Analysis Of Dynamic Metabolism In Shewanella Oneidensis Mr-1 Using A Static Optimization Approach, Xueyang Feng, You Xu, Yixin Chen, Yinjie Tang

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Shewanella bacteria are facultative anaerobes isolated from aquatic and sedimentary environments (Hau and Gralnick 2007) with a broad capacity for reduction of multiple electron receptors (Pinchuk et al. 2009; Serres and Riley 2006), including Fe(III), Mn(IV), sulfur, nitrate, and fumarate. With the accomplishment of complete genome sequencing of several Shewanella bacteria, the general pictures of the carbon metabolism have been revealed (Serres and Riley 2006). metabolism. One of the most physiological methods to decipher the time-variant metabolic regulation is to determine the dynamic distribution of intracellular metabolic fluxes since it reveals the final response of cellular metabolism to genomic, transcriptional …

Multi-Core Real-Time Scheduling For Generalized Parallel Task Models, Abusayeed Saifullah, Kunal Agrawal, Chenyang Lu, Christopher Gill Jan 2011

Multi-Core Real-Time Scheduling For Generalized Parallel Task Models, Abusayeed Saifullah, Kunal Agrawal, Chenyang Lu, Christopher Gill

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Multi-core processors over a significant performance increase over single-core processors. Therefore, they have the potential to enable computation-intensive real-time applications with stringent timing constraints that cannot be met on traditional single-core processors. However, most results in traditional multiprocessor real-time scheduling are limited to sequential programming models and ignore intra-task parallelism. In this paper, we address the problem of scheduling periodic parallel tasks with implicit deadlines on multi-core processors. We first consider a synchronous task model where each task consists of segments, each segment having an arbitrary number of parallel threads that synchronize at the end of the segment. We propose …

Optimization Of Gene Prediction Via More Accurate Phylogenetic Substitution Models, Ezekiel Maier, Randall H. Brown, Michael R. Brent Jan 2011

Optimization Of Gene Prediction Via More Accurate Phylogenetic Substitution Models, Ezekiel Maier, Randall H. Brown, Michael R. Brent

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Determining the beginning and end positions of each exon in each protein coding gene within a genome can be difficult because the DNA patterns that signal a gene’s presence have multiple weakly related alternate forms and the DNA fragments that comprise a gene are generally small in comparison to the size of the genome. In response to this challenge, automated gene predictors were created to generate putative gene structures. N SCAN identifies gene structures in a target DNA sequence and can use conservation patterns learned from alignments between a target and one or more informant DNA sequences. N SCAN uses …

Instance-Based Parameter Tuning Via Search Trajectory Similarity Clustering, Linda Lindawati, Hoong Chuin Lau, David Lo Jan 2011

Instance-Based Parameter Tuning Via Search Trajectory Similarity Clustering, Linda Lindawati, Hoong Chuin Lau, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper is concerned with automated tuning of parameters in local-search based meta-heuristics. Several generic approaches have been introduced in the literature that returns a ”one-size-fits-all” parameter configuration for all instances. This is unsatisfactory since different instances may require the algorithm to use very different parameter configurations in order to find good solutions. There have been approaches that perform instance-based automated tuning, but they are usually problem-specific. In this paper, we propose CluPaTra, a generic (problem-independent) approach to perform parameter tuning, based on CLUstering instances with similar PAtterns according to their search TRAjectories. We propose representing a search trajectory as …

Improving Service Through Just-In-Time Concept In A Dynamic Operational Environment, Kar Way Tan, Hoong Chuin Lau, Na Fu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper is concerned with the problem of Just-In-Time (JIT) job scheduling in a dynamic environment under uncertainty to attain timely service. We provide an approach, based on robust scheduling concepts, to analytically evaluate the expected cost of earliness and tardiness for each job and also the project. In addition, we search for a schedule execution policy with the minimum robust cost such that for a given risk level (epsilon), the actual realized schedule has (1 - epsilon) probability of completing with less than or equal to this robust cost. Our method is quite generic, and can be applied to …

Fine-Tuning Algorithm Parameters Using The Design Of Experiments Approach, Aldy Gunawan, Hoong Chuin Lau, Linda Lindawati Jan 2011

Fine-Tuning Algorithm Parameters Using The Design Of Experiments Approach, Aldy Gunawan, Hoong Chuin Lau, Linda Lindawati

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Optimizing parameter settings is an important task in algorithm design. Several automated parameter tuning procedures/configurators have been proposed in the literature, most of which work effectively when given a good initial range for the parameter values. In the Design of Experiments (DOE), a good initial range is known to lead to an optimum parameter setting. In this paper, we present a framework based on DOE to find a good initial range of parameter values for automated tuning. We use a factorial experiment design to first screen and rank all the parameters thereby allowing us to then focus on the parameter …

Remote Mutual Authentication And Key Agreement Scheme Based On Elliptic Curve Cryptosystem, Eunjun Yoon Jan 2011

Remote Mutual Authentication And Key Agreement Scheme Based On Elliptic Curve Cryptosystem, Eunjun Yoon

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Remote mutual authentication is an important part of security, along with confidentiality and integrity, for systems that allow remote access over untrustworthy networks, like the Internet. In 2006, Shieh-Wang pointed out the weakness of Juang's remote mutual authentication scheme using smart card and further proposed a novel remote user authentication scheme using smart card. However, this paper demonstrates that Shieh-Wang's scheme still does not provide perfect forward secrecy and is vulnerable to a privileged insider's attack. We also present an improved scheme based on the Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman problem (ECDHP) and secure one-way hash function, in order to isolate such …

An Effective Real Coded Ga Based Fuzzy Controller For Speed Control Of A Bldc Motor Without Speed Sensor, Ömer Aydoğdu, Ramazan Akkaya

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, an effective Real Coded Genetic Algorithm (GA) based optimal fuzzy controller is proposed. The fuzzy controller is used for sensorless speed control of a Brushless DC (BLDC) motor in DSP based application system. The advantages of adopting a real coded GA for the design and optimization of fuzzy controllers, which have a great deal of design and optimization parameters, are analyzed. Having accomplished optimization of developed fuzzy control system, a multi-objective performance index has been defined and it has been used as an objective function to be minimized in the real coded GA. Thus, the system can …

Low-Complexity Parameters Estimator For Multiple 2d Domain Incoherently Distributed Sources, Xiansheng Guo, Qun Wan, Xiaofeng Shen, Heng Dou Jan 2011

Low-Complexity Parameters Estimator For Multiple 2d Domain Incoherently Distributed Sources, Xiansheng Guo, Qun Wan, Xiaofeng Shen, Heng Dou

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A new low-complexity parameters estimator for multiple two-dimensional (2D) domain incoherently distributed (ID) sources is presented. One 2D domain ID source is parameterized with four parameters, the central azimuth direction-of-arrival (DOA), azimuth angular spread, central elevation DOA and elevation angular spread. Based on the eigenstructure between the steering matrix and signal subspace, an average total least-squares via rotational invariance technique (TLS-ESPRIT) is used to estimate the central elevation DOA, and then a generalized multiple signal classification (GMUSIC) algorithm is derived to estimate the central azimuth DOA. Utilizing preliminary estimates obtained at a pre-processing stage, the angular spread parameters can be …

Rate 1 Space-Time And Space-Frequency Spreading Diversity Technique, Gökçe Hacioğlu, Ali̇ Gangal Jan 2011

Rate 1 Space-Time And Space-Frequency Spreading Diversity Technique, Gökçe Hacioğlu, Ali̇ Gangal

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, a rate 1 transmitter diversity technique is proposed. The proposed technique uses spreading transform and space-time block coding (STBC) together. Space-time, space-frequency, and frequency diversity applications of the proposed technique are shown. The code matrix of the proposed technique can be designed systematically. The proposed technique needs the channel coefficients to stay constant over transmission of 2 rows of the coding matrix regardless of the size of the coding matrix or the diversity order. However, joint detection of the symbols is required for the proposed technique. We used computer simulations to compare our technique with the quasi-orthogonal …

Ecg Denoising On Bivariate Shrinkage Function Exploiting Interscale Dependency Of Wavelet Coefficients, Sema Kayhan, Ergun Erçelebi̇

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a new method for electrocardiogram (ECG) denoising based on bivariate shrinkage functions exploiting the interscale dependency of wavelet coefficients. Most nonlinear thresholding methods based on wavelet transform denoising assume that the wavelet coefficients are independent. However, wavelet coefficients of ECG signals have significant dependencies. In this paper, we proposed a new method by considering the dependencies between the coefficients and their parents in detail on a bivariate shrinkage function for denoising of an ECG signal corrupted by different types of noises, such as muscle artifact noise, electrode motion, and white noise. In real-time applications, reduction of computational …

A Complete Motor Protection Algorithm Based On Pca And Ann: A Real Time Study, Okan Özgönenel, Turgay Yalçin

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Protection of an induction motor (IM) against possible faults, such as a stator winding fault, due to thermal deterioration, rotor bar and bearing failures, is very important in environments in which it is used intensively, as in industry as an actuator. In this work, a real time digital protection algorithm based on principal component analysis (PCA) and neural network method is presented for induction motors. The proposed protection algorithm covers internal winding faults (also known as stator faults), broken rotor bar faults, and bearing faults. Many laboratory experiments have been performed on a specially designed induction motor to evaluate the …

A Study On Influence Of Borax To Polyester Insulators, Aysel Ersoy, Ayten Kuntman

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study the effect of borax on polyester insulators is investigated by evaluating the tracking and erosion resistance using the inclined plane test. The test procedure follows the ASTM D2303 standard. During the test, 50 Hz current was acquired from the ground electrode allowing a sampling rate of 48000 samples per second. The effect of borax concentration on the glass transition and the degradation temperature is studied by employing differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis. The addition of borax to the unsaturated polyester resulted in an increase in the glass transition temperature, while the addition of 0.5% of borax by …

On The Existence Of Common Lyapunov Functions For Consensus Algorithms Based On Averaging, Mehmet Akar, Robert Shorten Jan 2011

On The Existence Of Common Lyapunov Functions For Consensus Algorithms Based On Averaging, Mehmet Akar, Robert Shorten

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper addresses distributed deterministic consensus algorithms based on averaging. We relate the conditions for achieving consensus to the existence of a common norm for a set of row-stochastic matrices associated with the original set of averaging matrices. For a system to achieve consensus, it is shown that this associated set of matrices should have a Common Lyapunov Function, even if the original set might not have one.

Decentralized Robust Load-Frequency Control Of Power System Based On Quantitative Feedback Theory, Aidin Sakhavati, Gevork Gharehpetian, Seyed Hossein Hosseini

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper aims at investigating the problem of Load Frequency Control (LFC) in interconnected power systems in order to obtain robustness against uncertainties. A design method for a robust controller, based on Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT), has been presented in this paper. For a two-area power system, the simulation results show that the system response with the proposed QFT controller exhibits transient response beyond PI controllers. It is also shown that the transient response of the tie line power can also be improved.

Sliding Mode Controller Gain Adaptation And Chattering Reduction Techniques For Dsp-Based Pm Dc Motor Drives, Mehmet Dal, Remus Teodorescu Jan 2011

Sliding Mode Controller Gain Adaptation And Chattering Reduction Techniques For Dsp-Based Pm Dc Motor Drives, Mehmet Dal, Remus Teodorescu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In order to achieve and maintain the prospective benefits of sliding mode control (SMC) methodology, the phenomenon known as ``chattering'', the main obstacle encountered in real-time applications, has to be suppressed. In this study, two promising switching control gain adaptation and chattering reduction techniques are investigated, and the effectiveness of chattering suppression for current regulation of PM DC drives is tested. The sampling rate was also examined to determine how it affects the amplitude of chattering. This paper concentrates on various combinations of observer-based methods in order to find the best solution for chattering reduction. To find a practical solution …

Minimization Of Load Shedding By Sequential Use Of Linear Programming And Particle Swarm Optimization, Mehrdad Tarafdar Hagh, Sadjad Galvani Jan 2011

Minimization Of Load Shedding By Sequential Use Of Linear Programming And Particle Swarm Optimization, Mehrdad Tarafdar Hagh, Sadjad Galvani

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Minimization of load shedding during contingency conditions is solved as an optimization problem. As a new topic, instead of local load shedding, total load shedding of a large power system is considered. Power generation rescheduling is considered to minimize the load shedding, as well. Different importance factors for buses are also considered. The linear programming method (LP) is used to solve this problem in a short period of time without considering some power system constraints. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is also used to solve the problem by considering all power system constraints, but with a longer solving time. Finally, a …
