Automated Detection Of Dust Clouds, Sources, And Direction From Noaa-Avhrr Satellite Imagery, Mohammed Qassim Alkhatib

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This research is mainly focused on automatically locating dust sources and estimating their transport direction in NOAA-AVHRR images. Applications of AVHRR images may include agricultural assessment, producing maps of large area, and to retrieve various geophysical parameters. The AVHRR simultaneously records five bands of data, in our research, we focused on bands four and five since these wavelengths highlight the absorption and subsequent emission of thermal radiation by the silicate particles in the dust storms.

In this research, we propose a new method to detect dust clouds on satellite images. The approach we propose involves the use of an image …

Combustion Of Lunar Regolith Mixed With Energetic Additives: Thermodynamic Calculations And Experimental Studies, Francisco Alvarez Jan 2011

Combustion Of Lunar Regolith Mixed With Energetic Additives: Thermodynamic Calculations And Experimental Studies, Francisco Alvarez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The future of space exploration will require longer missions in order to better understand the conditions of near-Earth celestial objects, like the Moon or Mars. Future space missions will require the development of goods, such as propulsion fuel and structural materials, produced using the extraterrestrial resources available. The area that develops these technologies is called In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU). ISRU allows reducing the payload, and as a consequence reduces the energy consumption and cost of space travel. The production of structural materials on the Moon can be accomplished using Self-Propagating High-Temperature Synthesis (SHS). This work describes the combination of ISRU …

Effects Of The Usage Of Parallel Hardware Architectures In The Simulation Of Artificial Neural Networks Training Process, Carlos Beas Jan 2011

Effects Of The Usage Of Parallel Hardware Architectures In The Simulation Of Artificial Neural Networks Training Process, Carlos Beas

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Long training times and non-ideal performance have been a big impediment in further continuing the use of Artificial Neural Networks for real world applications. Current research is currently focused on two areas of study that aim to address this problem. The first approach seeks to overcome large training times by devising faster learning algorithms where a set of interconnection weights for which the network produces negligible error takes a less amount of computation to find [Sun98]. The second approach aims to address the impediment by implementing existing training algorithms but on parallel hardware architectures.

While both approaches provide promising advances …

Design And Cfd Optimization Of Methane Regenerative Cooled Rocket Nozzles, Christopher Linn Bradford

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Liquid rocket engines benefit in life cycle from the active regenerative cooling method which passes the fuel as the coolant through channels surrounding the combustion chamber. These channels are designed and optimized using structural considerations as well as heat transfer theory, then CFD simulations with the software FLUENT are performed for the final analysis. The difficulty in using methane as the fuel/coolant is addressed, and requires the use of the ideal gas numerical model in preliminary CFD simulations. Comparison to real gas numerical models is made, and results also given for one channel design. The techniques utilized herein allow the …

2d Gaussian Object Motion Detection, Miguel Angel Chaidez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Dr. John Moya, and associated research assistants, have previously created an image-change recognition algorithm (JESSE) to mark changes within an image. The focus of this thesis is to present a physical application and modification of this algorithm in order to detect a surgeon's hand and verify chip placement on a printed circuit board.

There are different techniques in implementing visual recognition and motion detection with smart systems but the high cost and complicated calibration of these systems make them impractical. The goal was to create a system that is simple, inexpensive and applicable to multiple applications that will allow the …

Poincare Recurrence And Spectral Cascades In Three-Dimensional Quantum Turbulence, George Vahala, Jeffrey Yepez, Linda L. Vahala, Min Soe, Bo Zhang, Sean Ziegeler

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The time evolution of the ground state wave function of a zero-temperature Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) gas is well described by the Hamiltonian Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation. Using a set of appropriately interleaved unitary collision-stream operators, a qubit lattice gas algorithm is devised, which on taking moments, recovers the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation under diffusion ordering (time scales as length2). Unexpectedly, there is a class of initial states whose Poincaré recurrence time is extremely short and which, as the grid resolution is increased, scales with diffusion ordering (and not as length3). The spectral results of J. Yepez et al. …

Imbalanced Learning For Functional State Assessment, Feng Li, Frederick Mckenzie, Jiang Li, Guanfan Zhang, Roger Xu, Carl Richey, Tom Schnell, Thomas E. Pinelli (Ed.)

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents results of several imbalanced learning techniques applied to operator functional state assessment where the data is highly imbalanced, i.e., some function states (majority classes) have much more training samples than other states (minority classes). Conventional machine learning techniques usually tend to classify all data samples into majority classis and perform poorly for minority classes. In this study, we implemented five imbalanced learning techniques, including random under-sampling, random over-sampling, synthetic minority over-sampling technique (SMOTE), borderline-SMOTE and adaptive synthetic sampling (ADASYN) to solve this problem. Experimental results on a benchmark driving test dataset show that accuracies for minority classes …

Electronically Enhanced Surface Diffusion During Ge Growth On Si(100), Ali Orguz Er, Hani E. Elsayed-Ali

Physics Faculty Publications

The effect of nanosecond pulsed laser excitation on surface diffusion during the growth of Ge on Si(100) at 250 °C was studied. In situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction was used to measure the surface diffusion coefficient while ex situ atomic force microscopy was used to probe the structure and morphology of the grown quantum dots. The results show that laser excitation of the substrate increases the surface diffusion during the growth of Ge on Si(100), changes the growth morphology, improves the crystalline structure of the grown quantum dots, and decreases their size distribution. A purely electronic mechanism of enhanced surface …

A Stress-Strain Model For A Two-Phase Ultrafine-Grained Aluminum Alloy, P. S. De, J. Q. Su, R. S. Mishra

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Two-phase ultrafine-grained (UFG) aluminum alloys with different precipitate and low-angle boundary distributions were examined for their monotonic stress-strain behavior. Precipitates in combination with low-angle grain boundaries were found to determine the deformation micro mechanism. It is proposed that thermally activated vacancy movement plays a central role in this regard. the experimental stress-strain curves matched well with the trend predicted by a modified Blum-Zheng model based on vacancy-assisted dislocation annihilation mechanism. © 2010 Acta Materialia Inc. Friction Stir Lap Welded Advanced High Strength Steels: Microstructure And Mechanical Properties, M. Ghosh, K. Kumar, R. S. Mishra Jan 2011

Friction Stir Lap Welded Advanced High Strength Steels: Microstructure And Mechanical Properties, M. Ghosh, K. Kumar, R. S. Mishra

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Friction stir welding was carried out under different heat input and cooling rates to produce lap joints between high strength martensitic steel sheets. the microstructure of the welds was characterized, and microhardness was evaluated. Joint efficiency was determined by lap shear test. Variation in processing conditions governed total heat input, peak temperature and cooling rate during friction stir welding. Weld nugget microstructure depended principally on cooling rate. the slowest cooling rate promoted ferrite-pearlite and the fastest cooling rate resulted in martensite formation in the weld nugget. the weakest region of all the joints was the heat affected zone, which consists …

Effects Of Acute Rho Kinase Inhibition On Chronic Hypoxia-Induced Changes In Proximal And Distal Pulmonary Arterial Structure And Function, Rebecca R. Vanderpool, Ah Ram Kim, Robert C. Molthen, Naomi Chesler Jan 2011

Effects Of Acute Rho Kinase Inhibition On Chronic Hypoxia-Induced Changes In Proximal And Distal Pulmonary Arterial Structure And Function, Rebecca R. Vanderpool, Ah Ram Kim, Robert C. Molthen, Naomi Chesler

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Hypoxic pulmonary hypertension (HPH) is initially a disease of the small pulmonary arteries. Its severity is usually quantified by pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR). Acute Rho kinase inhibition has been found to reduce PVR toward control values in animal models, suggesting that persistent pulmonary vasoconstriction is the dominant mechanism for increased PVR. However, HPH may also cause proximal arterial changes, which are relevant to right ventricular (RV) afterload. RV afterload can be quantified by pulmonary vascular impedance, which is obtained via spectral analysis of pulsatile pressure-flow relationships. To determine the effects of HPH independent of persistent pulmonary vasoconstriction in proximal and …

Visual And Proprioceptive Contributions To Compensatory And Pursuit Tracking Movements In Humans, Megan L. Heenan, Robert A. Scheidt, Scott A. Beardsley

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

An ongoing debate in the field of motor control considers how the brain uses sensory information to guide the formation of motor commands to regulate movement accuracy. Recent research has shown that the brain may use visual and proprioceptive information differently for stabilization of limb posture (compensatory movements) and for controlling goal-directed limb trajectory (pursuit movements). Using a series of five experiments and linear systems identification techniques, we modeled and estimated the sensorimotor control parameters that characterize the human motor response to kinematic performance errors during continuous compensatory and pursuit tracking tasks. Our findings further support the idea that pursuit …

Balloon Borne Mars Research Platforms, Sean Michael Hancock

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Aerial platforms can fill a measurement gap between orbiters and rovers, providing planetary scale high resolution in situ measurements, access to scientifically interesting terrain that is either inaccessible or hazardous to rovers, and serve as a planet-wide delivery platforms to deploy surface probes and rovers to areas inaccessible given existing entry, descent, and landing systems. A permanent robotic outpost on the Martian surface can utilize locally-derived hydrogen as a lifting gas for balloon systems deployed from Mars. That approach can simplify the inflation and launch of aerial vehicles while allowing for a long duration deployment campaign that is not constrained …

Femtosecond Laser Writing Of Waveguides In Zinc Phosphate Glasses [Invited], Luke B. Fletcher, Jon J. Witcher, Neil Troy, Signo Tadeu Dos Reis, Richard K. Brow, R. M. Vazquez, R. Osellame, Denise M. Krol

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have studied the relationship between the initial glass composition and the structural changes associated with laser-induced refractive index modification in a series of Er-Yb doped and undoped zinc phosphate glasses. White light microscopy and waveguide experiments are used together with Raman and fluorescence spectroscopy to characterize the structural changes. The correlation between Raman peak shifts and fluorescence from phosphorus-oxygen hole center (POHC) defects indicates that fs-laser writing results in a depolymerization of the phosphate glass network. The results also show that the exact glass composition should be taken into account when fabricating waveguide devices in phosphate glasses, in order …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the paper, we conduct direct numerical simulations (DNS) to investigate the effect of turbulence-radiation interaction (TRI) in hypersonic turbulent boundary layers, representative of the Orion crew exploration vehicle (CEV) at peak heating condition during reentry. The radiative transfer equation (RTE) is solved using the tangent slab approximation. 1 The RTE solver is line-by-line (LBL) accurate, making use of a developed efficient spectral database 2 for spectral modeling. A multi-group full-spectrum correlated-k-distribution (FSCK) method 3 is used to reduce the number of RTE evaluations while preserving LBL accuracy. A nondimensional governing parameter to measure the significance of TRI is proposed, …

Assessment Of Turbulence-Chemistry Interaction In Hypersonic Turbulent Boundary Layers, L. (Lian) Duan, M. P. Martín

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Studies of the turbulence-chemistry interaction are performed in hypersonic turbulent boundary layers using direct numerical simulation flow fields under typical hypersonic conditions representative of blunt-body and slender body hypersonic vehicles, with super catalytic and noncatalytic wall conditions in pure air. Nondimensional governing parameters, the interaction Damköhler number and the interaction relative heat release, are proposed to measure the influence of turbulence-chemistry interaction on flow composition and temperature. Both a priori and posteriori studies are performed to assess the effect of turbulence-chemistry interaction on chemical production rates and mean and turbulent flow characteristics. It is found that the governing parameters provide …

In this paper, a low-complexity turbo detection scheme is proposed for single-carrier multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) underwater acoustic (UWA) communications that employs low-density parity-check (LDPC) channel coding. the proposed iterative soft feedback equalization (SFE) algorithm offers a novel approach to combating error propagation by utilizing the past soft decisions to mitigate inter-symbol interference. in addition, its computational complexity grows only linearly with the number of equalizer coefficients, compared to the quadratic complexity of minimum mean square error-Based linear turbo equalizer. Performance of the proposed detection scheme is verified through experimental data collected in MACE10. Experimental results show that it provides …

Fault-Tolerant 3d Clock Network, Chiao Ling Lung, Yu Shih Su, Shih Hsiu Huang, Yiyu Shi, Shih Chieh Chang Jan 2011

Fault-Tolerant 3d Clock Network, Chiao Ling Lung, Yu Shih Su, Shih Hsiu Huang, Yiyu Shi, Shih Chieh Chang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Clock tree synthesis is one of the most important and challenging problems in 3D ICs. the clock signals have to be delivered by through-silicon vias (TSVs) to different tiers with minimum skew and latency. While there are a few related works in literature, none of them considers the reliability of TSVs. Accordingly, the failure of any TSV in the clock tree yields a bad chip. the naive solution using double-TSV can alleviate the problem. But the significant area overhead renders it less practical for large designs. in this paper, we propose a novel TSV fault-tolerant unit (TFU) that can provide …
