Mapping Galileo's Trajectory, Mark Woods Jan 2011

Mapping Galileo's Trajectory, Mark Woods

Aerospace Engineering

The NASA Galileo mission was mapped out using a patched conics approximation.  Galileo launched from Earth, underwent a gravity assist from Venus back to Earth for another gravity assist.  Galileo then came back to Earth for one more gravity assist to propel it to Jupiter.  A simulation ignoring all perturbations (i.e. third body effects, zonal (harmonics, solar wind, drag) was carried out.  The simulation was able to make it to the final Earth flyby before diverging from the actual trajectory.  The simulated and actual flyby dates all differed by less than 5 hours, and the simulated and actual flyby altitudes …

Analysis Of Surface Augmentation Of Airfoil Sections Via Flow Visualization Techniques, John Louis Vento Jan 2011

Analysis Of Surface Augmentation Of Airfoil Sections Via Flow Visualization Techniques, John Louis Vento

Aerospace Engineering

This report details an experiment done to verify the effectiveness of two passive flow control systems on two-dimensional airfoil sections. The flow control was tested on two types of airfoils: a symmetric NACA 0011, intended to represent an airplane in cruise, and a NACA16611, intended to represent an aircraft with flaps extended.  Two types of passive systems were employed, a dimple surface augmentation, similar to a golf ball, and a grit system located at 20% chord. Airfoils without either augmentation were tested as a control case. Using a water tunnel and dye to perform flow visualization, the effects of each …

Flight Testing In A Simulation Based Environment, David W. Babka Jan 2011

Flight Testing In A Simulation Based Environment, David W. Babka

Aerospace Engineering

Over the past two decades performance flight testing of full scale aircraft has transferred some of the testing workload to simulation based systems.  Flight testing full scale aircraft in the real world environment has always been expensive, especially now with the rise in aviation fuel costs. Additionally, new emerging technologies require extensive testing and doing so in the full scale environment is cost prohibitive.  A cheaper alternative is to test systems in a simulation based environment.  Not only can aircraft be simulated via a computer, but all the aircrafts systems can be modeled in the simulation.  Furthermore, most of the …

Characterization Of Thermal And Mechanical Properties Of Polypropylene-Based Composites For Fuel Cell Bipolar Plates And Development Of Educational Tools In Hydrogen And Fuel Cell Technologies, Daniel López Gaxiola

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

In this project we developed conductive thermoplastic resins by adding varying amounts of three different carbon fillers: carbon black (CB), synthetic graphite (SG) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) to a polypropylene matrix for application as fuel cell bipolar plates. This component of fuel cells provides mechanical support to the stack, circulates the gases that participate in the electrochemical reaction within the fuel cell and allows for removal of the excess heat from the system.

The materials fabricated in this work were tested to determine their mechanical and thermal properties. These materials were produced by adding varying amounts of single carbon …

Effects Of Silicon Content And Cooling Rate On Mechanical Properties Of Heavy Section Ductile Cast Iron , Meghan Haycock

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The effects of Si and cooling rate are investigated for their effect on the mechanical properties and microstructure. Three alloys were chosen with varying C and Si contents and an attempt to keep the remainder of the elements present constant. Within each heat, three test blocks were poured. Two blocks had chills – one with a fluid flowing through it to cool it (active chill) and one without the fluid (passive) – and the third block did not have a chill. Cooling curves were gathered and analyzed. The mechanical properties of the castings were correlated to the microstructure, cooling rate …

Processing And Mechanical Properties Of Cast Aluminum Containing Scandium, Zirconium, And Ytterbium , Nicholas D. Johnson

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

A series of aluminum alloys containing additions of scandium, zirconium, and ytterbium were cast to evaluate the effect of partial ytterbium substitution for scandium on tensile behavior. Due to the high price of scandium, a crucible-melt interaction study was performed to ensure no scandium was lost in graphite, alumina, magnesia, or zirconia crucibles after holding a liquid Al-Sc master alloy for 8 hours at 900 °C in an argon atmosphere. The alloys were subjected to an isochronal aging treatment and tested for conductivity and Vickers microhardness after each increment. For scandium-containing alloys, peak hardnesses of 520-790 MPa, and peak tensile …

High Temperature, Low Cycle Fatigue Of A Hybrid Particulate/Fiber Aluminum Metal-Matrix Composite , Justin Clark Jan 2011

High Temperature, Low Cycle Fatigue Of A Hybrid Particulate/Fiber Aluminum Metal-Matrix Composite , Justin Clark

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The effect of shot particles on the high temperature, low cycle fatigue of a hybrid fiber/particulate metal-matrix composite (MMC) was studied. Two hybrid composites with the general composition A356/35%SiC particle/5%Fiber (one without shot) were tested. It was found that shot particles acting as stress concentrators had little effect on the fatigue performance. It appears that fibers with a high silica content were more likely to debond from the matrix. Final failure of the composite was found to occur preferentially in the matrix. SiC particles fracture progressively during fatigue testing, leading to higher stress in the matrix, and final failure by …

Resource Management In Location Aware Cognitive Radio Networks, Suryabh Sharma

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Dynamic spectrum access (DSA) aims at utilizing spectral opportunities both in time and frequency domains at any given location, which arise due to variations in spectrum usage. Recently, Cognitive radios (CRs) have been proposed as a means of implementing DSA. In this work we focus on the aspect of resource management in overlaid CRNs. We formulate resource allocation strategies for cognitive radio networks (CRNs) as mathematical optimization problems. Specifically, we focus on two key problems in resource management: Sum Rate Maximization and Maximization of Number of Admitted Users. Since both the above mentioned problems are NP hard due to presence …

Life Cycle Assessment Of Trayless Dining , Nawaf Isam Blaisi

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Universities in the United States are applying more sustainable approaches to their dining service operations. "The increase in social consciousness and environmental stewardship on college campuses has spurred an array of new and innovative sustainability programs"(ARAMARK Higher Education 2008). University residence dining is typically cafeteria style, with students using trays to carry food. Studies report that food served without trays substantially reduces food waste and water and electrical consumption associated with washing trays. Commonly, these reported results are estimates and not measurements taken under actual operating conditions.

This study utilizes measurements recorded under actual dining service conditions in student residence …

Sediment Yield Reduction In An Agricultural Watershed, Lijun Chen Jan 2011

Sediment Yield Reduction In An Agricultural Watershed, Lijun Chen

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

With proper application of Best Management Practices (BMPs), the impact from the sediment to the water bodies could be minimized. However, finding the optimal allocation of BMP can be difficult, since there are numerous possible options. Also, economics plays an important role in BMP affordability and, therefore, the number of BMPs able to be placed in a given budget year. In this study, two methodologies are presented to determine the optimal cost-effective BMP allocation, by coupling a watershed-level model, Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), with two different methods, targeting and a multi-objective genetic algorithm (Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II, …

Cladophora, Mass Transport, And The Nearshore Phosphorus Shunt , Aaron I. Dayton Jan 2011

Cladophora, Mass Transport, And The Nearshore Phosphorus Shunt , Aaron I. Dayton

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Excessive Cladophora growth in the Great Lakes has led to beach fouling and the temporary closure of nuclear power plants and has been associated with avian botulism and the persistence of human pathogens. As the growth-limiting nutrient for Cladophora, phosphorus is the appropriate target for management efforts. Dreissenids (zebra and quagga mussels) have the ability to capture particulate phase phosphorus (otherwise unavailable to Cladophora) and release it in a soluble, available form. The significance of this potential nutrient source is, in part, influenced by the interplay between phosphorus flux from the mussel bed and turbulent mixing in establishing …

Mechanisms Contributing To The Deep Chlorophyll Maximum In Lake Superior, Marcel L. Dijkstra Jan 2011

Mechanisms Contributing To The Deep Chlorophyll Maximum In Lake Superior, Marcel L. Dijkstra

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The seasonal appearance of a deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) in Lake Superior is a striking phenomenon that is widely observed; however its mechanisms of formation and maintenance are not well understood. As this phenomenon may be the reflection of an ecological driver, or a driver itself, a lack of understanding its driving forces limits the ability to accurately predict and manage changes in this ecosystem. Key mechanisms generally associated with DCM dynamics (i.e. ecological, physiological and physical phenomena) are examined individually and in concert to establish their role. First the prevailing paradigm, “the DCM is a great place to live”, …

Nanomechanics Of Cellulose Crystals And Cellulose-Based Polymer Composites, Anahita Pakzad

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Cellulose-polymer composites have potential applications in aerospace and transportation areas where lightweight materials with high mechanical properties are needed. In addition, these economical and biodegradable composites have been shown to be useful as polymer electrolytes, packaging structures, optoelectronic devices, and medical implants such as wound dressing and bone scaffolds.

In spite of the above mentioned advantages and potential applications, due to the difficulties associated with synthesis and processing techniques, application of cellulose crystals (micro and nano sized) for preparation of new composite systems is limited. Cellulose is hydrophilic and polar as opposed to most of common thermoplastics, which are non-polar. …

Comparison Of Modal Analysis Results Of Laser Vibrometry And Nearfield Acoustical Holography Measurements Of An Aluminum Plate, Jennifer L. Potter

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Noise and vibration has long been sought to be reduced in major industries: automotive, aerospace and marine to name a few. Products must be tested and pass certain levels of federally regulated standards before entering the market. Vibration measurements are commonly acquired using accelerometers; however limitations of this method create a need for alternative solutions.

Two methods for non-contact vibration measurements are compared: Laser Vibrometry, which directly measures the surface velocity of the aluminum plate, and Nearfield Acoustic Holography (NAH), which measures sound pressure in the nearfield, and using Green’s Functions, reconstructs the surface velocity at the plate. The surface …

The objective of this research was to develop a high-fidelity dynamic model of a parafoilpayload system with respect to its application for the Ship Launched Aerial Delivery System (SLADS). SLADS is a concept in which cargo can be transfered from ship to shore using a parafoil-payload system. It is accomplished in two phases: An initial towing phase when the glider follows the towing vessel in a passive lift mode and an autonomous gliding phase when the system is guided to the desired point. While many previous researchers have analyzed the parafoil-payload system when it is released from another airborne vehicle, …

Dynamic Modeling Of Active Regeneration In Catalyzed And Non-Catalyzed Diesel Particulate Filters, Aamod Pethe Jan 2011

Dynamic Modeling Of Active Regeneration In Catalyzed And Non-Catalyzed Diesel Particulate Filters, Aamod Pethe

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Particulate matter (PM) emissions standards set by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have become increasingly stringent over the years. The EPA regulation for PM in heavy duty diesel engines has been reduced to 0.01 g/bhp-hr for the year 2010. Heavy duty diesel engines make use of an aftertreatment filtration device, the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). DPFs are highly efficient in filtering PM (known as soot) and are an integral part of 2010 heavy duty diesel aftertreatment system.

PM is accumulated in the DPF as the exhaust gas flows through it. This PM needs to be removed by oxidation periodically …

Topological Changes In 2d Simplicial Meshes For The Simulation Of Fractures, James R. Thunes Jan 2011

Topological Changes In 2d Simplicial Meshes For The Simulation Of Fractures, James R. Thunes

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

A method for the introduction of strong discontinuities into a mesh will be developed. This method, applicable to a number of eXtended Finite Element Methods (XFEM) with intra-element strong discontinuities will be demonstrated with one specific method: the Generalized Cohesive Element (GCE) method. The algorithm utilizes a subgraph mesh representation which may insert the GCE either adaptively during the course of the analysis or a priori. Using this subgraphing algorithm, the insertion time is O(n) to the number of insertions. Numerical examples are presented demonstrating the advantages of the subgraph insertion method.

Effects Of Hibernation On Bone In Yellow-Bellied Marmots, Samantha J. Wojda Jan 2011

Effects Of Hibernation On Bone In Yellow-Bellied Marmots, Samantha J. Wojda

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Disuse osteoporosis is a problem for people with spinal cord injury or stroke, patients confined to bed rest, and astronauts exposed to microgravity. Unlike most mammals however, bears have been shown to prevent bone loss during hibernation, a seasonal period of disuse. Similarly, studies in ground squirrels indicate preservation of whole bone strength during hibernation, though evidence suggests there may be some increased osteocytic osteolysis. Uncovering the mechanism by which these animals prevent bone loss during hibernation could lead to an improved treatment for osteoporosis in humans. Marmots are a good animal model for these studies because they are small …

Performance Characteristics And Design Recommendations For Biomass-Burning Stoves Using Earthen Construction Materials , Nicholas H. Schreiner Jan 2011

Performance Characteristics And Design Recommendations For Biomass-Burning Stoves Using Earthen Construction Materials , Nicholas H. Schreiner

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

This report provides an analysis of the thermal performance and emissions characteristics of improved biomass stoves constructed using earthen materials. Commonly referred to as mud stoves, this type of improved stove incorporates high clay content soil with an organic binder in the construction of its combustion chamber and body. When large quantities of the mud material are used to construct the stove body, the stove does not offer significant improvements in fuel economy or air quality relative to traditional open fire cooking. This is partly because a significant amount of heat is absorbed by the mass of the stove reducing …

Retrofitting Boreholes Contaminated With Iron In Rural Uganda , Caleb T. Fader Jan 2011

Retrofitting Boreholes Contaminated With Iron In Rural Uganda , Caleb T. Fader

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

During my Peace Corps service as a community health liaison in rural Uganda I noticed that many improved water wells in our area had been abandoned. The communities described the water in these wells as being reddish in color, having a foul taste and odor, discoloring clothes and food, and not able to produce lather for washing.

Personal investigations and an initial literature search suggested that the primary contaminant was iron. The water in these wells had a low pH and a rusty metallic smell. The water produced early in the morning appeared very red but the water became more …

Rural Water System Sustainability : A Case Study Of Community-Managed Water Systems In Saramaka Communities , Gwynneth Smith Jan 2011

Rural Water System Sustainability : A Case Study Of Community-Managed Water Systems In Saramaka Communities , Gwynneth Smith

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Worldwide, rural populations are far less likely to have access to clean drinking water than are urban ones. In many developing countries, the current approach to rural water supply uses a model of demand-driven, community-managed water systems. In Suriname, South America rural populations have limited access to improved water supplies; community-managed water supply systems have been installed in several rural communities by nongovernmental organizations as part of the solution. To date, there has been no review of the performance of these water supply systems. This report presents the results of an investigation of three rural water supply systems constructed in …

Tropospheric Ozone And Co Over North Atlantic For The Past Decade, Mark F. Weise

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

We investigate how declines in US emissions of CO and O3 precursors have impacted the lower free troposphere over the North Atlantic. We use seasonal observations for O3 and CO from the PICO-NARE project for the period covering 2001 to 2010. Observations are used to verify model output generated by the GEOS-Chem 3-D global chemical transport model. Additional satellite data for CO from AIRS/Aqua and for O3 from TES/Aura were also used to provide additional comparisons; particularly for fall, winter, and spring when PICO-NARE coverage is sparse. We find GEOS-Chem captures the seasonal cycle for CO and O3 well compared …

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

To mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and reduce U.S. dependence on imported oil, the United States (U.S.) is pursuing several options to create biofuels from renewable woody biomass (hereafter referred to as “biomass”). Because of the distributed nature of biomass feedstock, the cost and complexity of biomass recovery operations has significant challenges that hinder increased biomass utilization for energy production. To facilitate the exploration of a wide variety of conditions that promise profitable biomass utilization and tapping unused forest residues, it is proposed to develop biofuel supply chain models based on optimization and simulation approaches. The biofuel supply chain is …

Micro Combined Heat And Power Laboratory Development, Thomson Varghese Jan 2011

Micro Combined Heat And Power Laboratory Development, Thomson Varghese

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Micro Combined Heat and Power (Micro-CHP) system produces both electricity and heat required for residential or small business applications. Use of Micro-CHP in a residential application not only creates energy and economic savings but also reduces the carbon foot print of the house or small business. Additionally, micro-CHP can subsidize its cost of operation by selling excess electricity produced back to the grid. Even though Micro-CHP remains attractive on paper, high initial cost and optimization issues in residential scale heat and electrical requirement has kept this technology from becoming a success. To understand and overcome all disadvantages posed my Micro-CHP …
