Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
GENI is evolving to provide a promising environment in which to do experimental research in the resilience and survivability of future networks, by allowing programmable control over topology and mechanism, while providing the scale and global reach needed to conduct network experiments far beyond the capabilities of a conventional testbed. We will use GENI in general, and the GpENI infrastructure (expanding to 40 clusters with 200 nodes worldwide), federated with the larger GENI PlanetLab control framework and interconnected to several ProtoGENI facilities to perform resilience and survivability experiments at scale, both in terms of node count and with the geographic …
Robust Statistical Methods For Non-Normal Quality Assurance Data Analysis In Transportation Projects, Mohammad Moin Uddin
Robust Statistical Methods For Non-Normal Quality Assurance Data Analysis In Transportation Projects, Mohammad Moin Uddin
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The American Association of Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) require the use of the statistically based quality assurance (QA) specifications for construction materials. As a result, many of the state highway agencies (SHAs) have implemented the use of a QA specification for highway construction. For these statistically based QA specifications, quality characteristics of most construction materials are assumed normally distributed, however, the normality assumption can be violated in several forms. Distribution of data can be skewed, kurtosis induced, or bimodal. If the process shows evidence of a significant departure from normality, then the quality measures …
High Performance Piezoelectric Materials And Devices For Multilayer Low Temperature Co-Fired Ceramic Based Microfluidic Systems, Wenli Zhang
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The incorporation of active piezoelectric elements and fluidic components into micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) is of great interest for the development of sensors, actuators, and integrated systems used in microfluidics. Low temperature cofired ceramics (LTCC), widely used as electronic packaging materials, offer the possibility of manufacturing highly integrated microfluidic systems with complex 3-D features and various co-firable functional materials in a multilayer module. It would be desirable to integrate high performance lead zirconate titanate (PZT) based ceramics into LTCC-based MEMS using modern thick film and 3-D packaging technologies. The challenges for fabricating functional LTCC/PZT devices are: 1) formulating piezoelectric compositions which …
Mechanical Characterizations Of Environmentally Conditioned Shape Memory Polymers For Reconfigurable Aerospace Structures, Jared T. Fulcher
Mechanical Characterizations Of Environmentally Conditioned Shape Memory Polymers For Reconfigurable Aerospace Structures, Jared T. Fulcher
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Shape memory polymers (SMPs) have been candidate materials for morphing applications. However, the SMPs have not been fully tested to work in relevant environments required for Air Force missions. In this study, an epoxy-based SMP was separately exposed to moisture, lubricating oil and UV radiation, which are simulated service environments designed to be reflective of anticipated performance requirements. The thermomechanical properties and shape memory effects were studied by using novel high-temperature nanoindentation technique. Results show that environmental conditions have affected the glass transition temperature and mechanical properties of the SMPs. In most cases, the conditioned SMPs exhibited higher elastic moduli …

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Researchers can spend their time reverse engineering, performing reverse analysis, or making substantive contributions to digital forensics science. Although work in all of these areas is important, it is the scientific breakthroughs that are the most critical for addressing the challenges that we face. Reverse Engineering is the traditional bread-and-butter of digital forensics research. Companies like Microsoft and Apple deliver computational artifacts (operating systems, applications and phones) to the commercial market. These artifacts are bought and used by billions. Some have evil intent, and (if society is lucky), the computers end up in the hands of law enforcement. Unfortunately the …

In a recent study, digital forensics was found to lack a consensus around even the most basis notions and terminology of the field. To quote: “These two preliminary studies individually suggest that (1) scientific consensus in the area of digital forensic evidence examination is lacking in the broad sense, but that different groups within that overall community may have limited consensus around areas in which they have special expertise, and (2) that the current peerreviewed publication process is not acting to bring about the sorts of elements typically found in the advancement of a science toward such a consensus. ... …

Technology Corner: Internet Packet Sniffers, Nick V. Flor, Kenneth Guillory
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
The best way to understand an internet packet sniffer, hereafter “packet sniffer”, is by analogy with a wiretap. A wiretap is a piece of hardware that allows a person to eavesdrop on phone conversations over a telephone network. Similarly, a packet sniffer is a piece of software that allows a person to eavesdrop on computer communications over the internet. A packet sniffer can be used as a diagnostic tool by network administrators or as a spying tool by hackers who can use it to steal passwords and other private information from computer users. Whether you are a network administrator or …

Sampling: Making Electronic Discovery More Cost Effective, Milton Luoma, Vicki Luoma
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
With the huge volumes of electronic data subject to discovery in virtually every instance of litigation, time and costs of conducting discovery have become exceedingly important when litigants plan their discovery strategies. Rather than incurring the costs of having lawyers review every document produced in response to a discovery request in search of relevant evidence, a cost effective strategy for document review planning is to use statistical sampling of the database of documents to determine the likelihood of finding relevant evidence by reviewing additional documents. This paper reviews and discusses how sampling can be used to make document review more …

Developing A Forensic Continuous Audit Model, Grover S. Kearns, Katherine J. Barker, Stephen P. Danese
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Despite increased attention to internal controls and risk assessment, traditional audit approaches do not seem to be highly effective in uncovering the majority of frauds. Less than 20 percent of all occupational frauds are uncovered by auditors. Forensic accounting has recognized the need for automated approaches to fraud analysis yet research has not examined the benefits of forensic continuous auditing as a method to detect and deter corporate fraud. The purpose of this paper is to show how such an approach is possible. A model is presented that supports the acceptance of forensic continuous auditing by auditors and management as …

Analysis Of Data Remaining On Second Hand Adsl Routers, Patryk Szewczyk
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
In theory, an ADSL router can provide an additional layer of security to a wired and wireless network through; access control, wireless encryption, firewall rule sets, and network event logging. An ADSL router may also contain the users’ usage habits and broadband account credentials. However, end-users may be unaware of the intricacies of the security measures available and the potentially confidential information stored on their device. As a result a second hand ADSL router may contain a wealth of user-specific information if not wiped and disposed of in a secure manner. This paper shows the data that was acquired from …

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Digital crime scenes take place in the context of physical crime scenes. Virtual crime scene reconstruction is an activity where investigators create a 3- dimensional (3-D) model of an actual crime scene for the purpose of determining the events that lead to the crime. While virtual crime scene reconstruction is currently used for analyzing physical scenes, it can also help investigators visualize and explore ways digital media could have been used to perpetrate a crime. In this technology corner we explore one of the technologies underlying virtual crime scene reconstruction: 3-D modeling.

Fuzzy logic is a form of multi-valued logic derived from fuzzy set theory. Its methodology aims to provide a definitive solution from information that may be construed as ambiguous, imprecise or noisy. Classical set theory studies the properties of sets, while fuzzy set theory investigates the degree to which an element can be related to a set. The aim of this project is to develop a control strategy for a specific technical challenge relating to the food processing sector based on the deployment of fuzzy logic control concepts. Specifically, in this paper the author is concerned with the ability to …

Investigating Modern Communication Technologies: The Effect Of Internet-Based Communication Technologies On The Investigation Process, Matthew Simon, Jill Slay
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Communication technologies are commonplace in modern society. For many years there were only a handful of communication technologies provided by large companies, namely the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and mobile telephony; these can be referred to as traditional communication technologies. Over the lifetime of traditional communication technologies has been little technological evolution and as such, law enforcement developed sound methods for investigating targets using them. With the advent of communication technologies that use the Internet – Internet-based or contemporary communication technologies – law enforcement are faced with many challenges. This paper discusses these challenges and their potential impact. It …
On Some Recent Applications Of The Coanda Effect, Caroline P. Lubert
On Some Recent Applications Of The Coanda Effect, Caroline P. Lubert
Department of Mathematics and Statistics - Faculty Scholarship
Over the last quarter century or so, the Coanda principle has become increasingly used in a wide variety of applications, including industrial, medical, maritime technology, and aerodynamics. In addition, its effect has been increasingly observed in the natural world. Devices employing this principle usually offer substantial flow deflection, and enhanced turbulence levels and entrainment compared with conventional jet flows. However, these prospective advantages are generally accompanied by other significant disadvantages such as jet flow detachment, and a considerable increase in associated noise levels. Much of the time, the reasons for this are not well understood. Consequently, in many cases, the …
Shock-Associated Noise Generation In Curved Coanda Turbulent Wall Jets, Caroline P. Lubert, Richard J. Shafer
Shock-Associated Noise Generation In Curved Coanda Turbulent Wall Jets, Caroline P. Lubert, Richard J. Shafer
Department of Mathematics and Statistics - Faculty Scholarship
Curved three-dimensional turbulent Coanda wall jets are present in a multitude of natural and engineering applications. The mechanism by which they form a shock-cell structure is poorly understood, as is the accompanying shock-associated noise (SAN) generation. This paper discusses these phenomena from both a modeling and experimental perspective. The Method of Characteristics is used to rewrite the governing hyperbolic partial differential equations as ordinary differential equations, which are then solved numerically using the Euler predictor-corrector method. The effects of complicating factors -- such as radial expansion and streamline curvature -- on the prediction of shock-cell location are then discussed. This …

Sensing Characteristics Of Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube (Mwcnt) Sensors Embedded In Porous Alumina Membranes, Swetha Sree Nimmagadda
Sensing Characteristics Of Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube (Mwcnt) Sensors Embedded In Porous Alumina Membranes, Swetha Sree Nimmagadda
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
A theoretical model is developed for calculating the sensitivity of resistive sensors based on aligned multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) embedded in the pores of alumina membranes. Aligned MWCNTs offer more surface area as each CNT acts as a landing site for detecting gas species. The MWCNTs behave as a p-type semiconducting layer; when the bus bar contacts are placed at either end of the top surface the resistance between the contacts responds to oxidizing (resistance decreases) and reducing gases (resistance increases). The model presented in this thesis aims to understand the device resistance dependence upon the MWCNT resistance, and the …
