Translational And Rotational Control Of An Asteroid Orbiting Satellite, Takahiro Kuhara Jan 2011

Translational And Rotational Control Of An Asteroid Orbiting Satellite, Takahiro Kuhara

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The objective of this thesis is to analyze an effective control scheme for an asteroid orbiting satellite. The thesis first summarizes the progress made in the dynamics formulation of such satellites and then provides a theoretical framework for the control system design. The control objective is to maintain a nadir pointing attitude on a circular equatorial orbit. Using established control design techniques, feedback laws are constructed to control both rotational and translational motion of the satellite so that the control objective is achieved. Computer simulations are carried out to illustrate the effectiveness of the control laws.

On The Thermodynamics Of Degradation, Mehdi Amir Darehbidi Jan 2011

On The Thermodynamics Of Degradation, Mehdi Amir Darehbidi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

All materials when subjected to fatigue loading are prone to failure if the number of cycles exceeds a certain level. Prediction of the number of cycles to failure is, therefore, of utmost importance in nearly all engineering applications. The existing methods for evaluating the fatigue life are tedious, expensive, and extremely time consuming as fatigue often takes many thousands to millions of cycles until failure occurs. Therefore, methods that can readily estimate the number of cycles to failure are highly desirable. In this work, innovative solutions to fatigue problems are presented and their practical significance is discussed. The premise of …

With the increased use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) based structural systems for rehabilitation of existing and construction of new bridges there is a requirement for identification of critical components of these structural systems and the determination of critical damage thresholds in them. Of the many available non-destructive techniques (NDT), acoustic emission (AE) monitoring had been identified as one of the most popular techniques applicable for damage discrimination in composites. The current study aimed at using patterns in AE data for the identification of damage modes exhibited by composite structural systems. The extensive experimental program involved testing of two structural …

Catalytic Hydrogenation Of Co To Higher Alcohols, Nachal Devi Subramanian Jan 2011

Catalytic Hydrogenation Of Co To Higher Alcohols, Nachal Devi Subramanian

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The interest in converting synthesis gas to alcohols and oxygenated fuel additives via CO hydrogenation is growing rapidly due to the increasing rise in oil prices. Among the potential end products, ethanol is desirable since it serves as a clean alternative fuel, a gasoline blend, and a hydrogen carrier to supply fuel cells. The high cost and limited availability of the most active/selective Rh-based catalysts has led to the development of base metal catalysts such as modified Cu-based catalysts. Literature suggests that a combination of Co (or Mn) with Cu can facilitate higher alcohol formation by a non-dissociative adsorption of …

Bio-Implantable Microdevices And Structures For Functional Electrical Stimulation Applications, Naga Srinivas Korivi Jan 2011

Bio-Implantable Microdevices And Structures For Functional Electrical Stimulation Applications, Naga Srinivas Korivi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation describes the development of microstructures and devices for applications in functional electrical stimulation. A nerve cuff electrode design has been developed for applications in neural electrical stimulation and recording, which addresses limitations with existing cuff electrodes. The developed clip-on micro-cuff electrode design consists of a naturally closed cuff with inner diameter in the micro-scale or above. A novel pinch-hinge feature allows a user to easily open the cuff and place it on target nerve tissue for stimulation or recording purposes. Upon release of the pinch-hinge, the cuff assumes its normally closed nature. The device conducts and reads electrical …

Creep Behaviour Of Hand Laminated Glass Reinforced Polymer Composites., Brian Quinn Jan 2011

Creep Behaviour Of Hand Laminated Glass Reinforced Polymer Composites., Brian Quinn

Theses

The creep behaviour of hand laminated, glass fiber reinforced polyester composites were studied at coupon level, due to the use of similar materials in long term load bearing civil and structural engineering applications. Creep predictions were made by fitting the parameters of several viscoelastic models to experimental creep data as well as two accelerated test methods, time temperature superposition (TTS) and frequency time transformations (FTT). TTS experiments were carried out in a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) in three point bending mode for three types of material systems. Creep compliance master curves representing the linear viscoelastic creep response at reference temperatures …

A Non-Invasive Assessment Of Moisture Content Of Municipal Solid Waste In A Landfill Using Resistivity Imaging, Huda Shihada Jan 2011

A Non-Invasive Assessment Of Moisture Content Of Municipal Solid Waste In A Landfill Using Resistivity Imaging, Huda Shihada

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

A bioreactor landfill is operated to enhance waste decomposition, gas production, and refuse stabilization. The fundamental aspect in the operation of a bioreactor landfill is the controlled addition of water and/or the recirculation of leachate into the landfill's waste mass. Since there is an increasing trend to operate landfills as bioreactor landfills, it is crucial to understand the moisture distribution within the landfill. Monitoring the moisture distribution within a bioreactor landfill is essential not only for the design and operation of leachate recirculation systems, but also to identify sites with non-uniform leachate distribution due to ponding and channeling. In the recent …

Design Of Short Drilled Shaft Foundations In High-Plasticity Clay Under Inclined Loading, Thornchaya Wejrungsikul Jan 2011

Design Of Short Drilled Shaft Foundations In High-Plasticity Clay Under Inclined Loading, Thornchaya Wejrungsikul

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Drilled shaft foundations are primarily used to support structures such as bridge piers, towers, buildings, transmission towers, and roadway cable barriers. Generally, the main characteristics of drilled shafts are to transfer the loads to the stronger layers in the vertical direction and also their ability to withstand lateral movements from lateral loads. Though the design of shafts are well established with respect to combinations of loads and moments, their behavior under pullout type inclined loading is not well established. The inclined load applied is the combination of lateral and uplift loads at the same time and structures such as ends …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Carbon Magnetic Nanoparticles, Sunilsingh Gusain

Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Carbon incorporated iron nanoparticles (Fe-CNPs) were successfully synthesized using ultrasonic cavitation in Benzene. This novel method of carbon nanoparticle (CNP) synthesis is a very cost-effective and versatile as one can easily tune the microstructure and magnetic properties by varying few parameters, for e.g. voltage. The Fe-CNP complexes are produced due to the electric plasma discharge generated between the electrodes in an ultrasonic cavitation field of liquid benzene. The constituent of the CNPs can be easily modified by different choice of electrode materials- iron and graphite. The resultant Fe-CNPs were characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to …

Optimization And Learning For Rough Terrain Legged Locomotion, Matthew A. Zucker, N. Ratliff, M. Stolle, J. Chestnutt, J. A. Bagnell, C. G. Atkeson, J. Kuffner Jan 2011

Optimization And Learning For Rough Terrain Legged Locomotion, Matthew A. Zucker, N. Ratliff, M. Stolle, J. Chestnutt, J. A. Bagnell, C. G. Atkeson, J. Kuffner

Engineering Faculty Works

We present a novel approach to legged locomotion over rough terrain that is thoroughly rooted in optimization. This approach relies on a hierarchy of fast, anytime algorithms to plan a set of footholds, along with the dynamic body motions required to execute them. Components within the planning framework coordinate to exchange plans, cost-to-go estimates, and 'certificates' that ensure the output of an abstract high-level planner can be realized by lower layers of the hierarchy. The burden of careful engineering of cost functions to achieve desired performance is substantially mitigated by a simple inverse optimal control technique. Robustness is achieved by …

Topic Maps Used To Present Interrelationships In Dynamic Linear Systems, Erik Allen Cheever , '82, Ames Bielenberg , '13

Engineering Faculty Works

Topic Maps Used to Present Interrelationships in Dynamic Linear SystemsThe study of Linear Physical Systems is unusual among topics in Engineering in that there is arich interplay among the topics and there is no natural order in which to present the material. Weuse topic maps to emphasize these interrelationships without imposing an arbitrary hierarchy onthe material presented. For example, in terms of types of systems, mechanical systems can betaught first, or electrical. In terms of transforms, Laplace can be taught first, or Fourier, or eventhe Z-transform. There are also many relationships between topics. Examples include thetransforms mentioned previously, the different …

Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance Of Single Silver Nanoparticles Studied By Dark-Field Optical Microscopy And Spectroscopy, Wei Cao, Tao Huang, Xiao-Hong Nancy Xu, Hani E. Elsayed-Ali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) with different shapes and disk-shaped Ag NP pairs with varying interparticle distance is studied using dark-field optical microscopy and spectroscopy (DFOMS). Disk-, square-, and triangular-shaped Ag NPs were fabricated on indium tin oxide-coated glass substrates by electron beam lithography. The LSPR spectra collected from single Ag NPs within 5×5 arrays using DFOMS exhibited pronounced redshifts as the NP shape changed from disk to square and to triangular. The shape-dependent experimental LSPR spectra are in good agreement with simulations using the discrete dipole approximation model, although there are small deviations in the …

Photoelectrochemical Etching Of Isolated, High Aspect Ratio Micorstructures In N-Type Silicon (100), Purnima Narayanan

LSU Master's Theses

Three-dimensional integration techniques have become increasingly popular to meet the ever rising demand of high capacity and reduced package size in microelectronics devices. Through Silicon Vias (TSVs) offer an efficient method to achieve 3D packaging with shorter interconnection length and higher interconnect density relative to conventional wire bonding. Wet electrochemical etching is a simple technique which may be used to create deep structures in silicon and is relatively low cost compared with Reactive Ion Etching or Laser drilling. Historically, a primary challenge is passivating TSV (macropore, microstructure) sidewalls against etching at sidewall thickness greater than twice the depletion region width. …

An Advanced Controller For A Semi-Active Wheelchair Suspension, David J. Smith Jan 2011

An Advanced Controller For A Semi-Active Wheelchair Suspension, David J. Smith

Master's Theses

An Advanced Controller for a Semi-Active Wheelchair Suspension was designed, built and tested.  The suspension consisted of a Goodyear 1S3-011 air spring, IQ Valves high speed proportional solenoid valve, and a custom made accumulator.  Several controller designs specific to semi-active suspensions were designed and tested.  The controllers investigated were skyhook, acceleration driven damping, and a combined control law employing both a dual and single sensor version.  The implementation of skyhook control suffered performance degradation from the idealization due to particular elements of hardware, however acceleration driven damping showed a marked and statistically significant improvement over skyhook control, in hardware, by …

Evaluation Of Louisiana Asphalt Pavement Friction, Vivek Lal Das Jan 2011

Evaluation Of Louisiana Asphalt Pavement Friction, Vivek Lal Das

LSU Master's Theses

This study aims to comprehensively investigate the effect of asphalt mix designs to address skid resistance. The current Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LADOTD) specification for friction design considers only the friction rating of aggregate defined by the polished stone value (PSV) obtained by the British pendulum tester (BPT), which is associated with only the micro-texture of asphalt pavement surfaces. The objective of this study is to recommend an asphalt surface friction mix design guideline which is based on both micro- and macro-texture of the wearing course mix. The objective was achieved by evaluating four typical laboratory prepared Louisiana …
