Cognitive Security Framework For Heterogeneous Sensor Network Using Swarm Intelligence, Rajani Muraleedharan Jan 2011

Cognitive Security Framework For Heterogeneous Sensor Network Using Swarm Intelligence, Rajani Muraleedharan

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Dissertations

Rapid development of sensor technology has led to applications ranging from academic to military in a short time span. These tiny sensors are deployed in environments where security for data or hardware cannot be guaranteed. Due to resource constraints, traditional security schemes cannot be directly applied. Unfortunately, due to minimal or no communication security schemes, the data, link and the sensor node can be easily tampered by intruder attacks. This dissertation presents a security framework applied to a sensor network that can be managed by a cohesive sensor manager. A simple framework that can support security based on situation assessment …

Protection Models For Web Applications, Karthick Jayaraman Jan 2011

Protection Models For Web Applications, Karthick Jayaraman

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Dissertations

Early web applications were a set of static web pages connected to one another. In contrast, modern applications are full-featured programs that are nearly equivalent to desktop applications in functionality. However, web servers and web browsers, which were initially designed for static web pages, have not updated their protection models to deal with the security consequences of these full-featured programs. This mismatch has been the source of several security problems in web applications.

This dissertation proposes new protection models for web applications. The design and implementation of prototypes of these protection models in a web server and a web browser …

Advancements In Solid Acid Catalysts For Ecofriendly And Economically Viable Synthesis Of Biodiesel, Yogesh C. Sharma, Bhaskar Singh, John Korstad

College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship

Solid acid (heterogeneous) catalysts have a unique advantage in esterification and transesterification reactions which enhances the use of high acid value oil to be used as feedstock for synthesis of biodiesel. Various solid acid catalysts such as resins, tungstated and sulfated zirconia, polyaniline sulfate, heteropolyacid, metal complexes, sulfated tin oxide, zeolite, acidic ionic liquid, and others have been explored as potential heterogeneous catalysts. The activity of the catalyst differs slightly resulting in moderate to high conversion and yield. The reuse of the solid catalyst is governed by their deactivation, poisoning, and the extent of leaching in the reaction medium. The …

A Critical Review On Recent Methods Used For Economically Viable And Eco-Friendly Development Of Microalgae As A Potential Feedstock For Synthesis Of Biodiesel, Yogesh C. Sharma, Bhaskar Singh, John Korstad

College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship

Microalgae are being considered as a viable feedstock for large-scale production of biodiesel. However, though it may look simpler to obtain lipids from microalgae, the overall process of choosing an algal strain, cultivation, harvesting, dewatering, and extraction of oil is quite complicated and not economically prudent at this time. A thorough understanding of algae and the overall biodiesel production process discussed in this paper is vital so that focused research might lower the costs involved. Various diverse species of microalgae are currently being used as feedstocks for biofuel. Heterotrophic culture may be preferred over photoautotrophic cultivation. For cultivation, specially fabricated …

Simulation, Application, And Resilience Of An Organic Neuromorphic Architecture, Made With Organic Bistable Devices And Organic Field Effect Transistors, Robert A. Nawrocki

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents work done simulating a type of organic neuromorphic architecture, modeled after Artificial Neural Network, and termed Synthetic Neural Network, or SNN. The first major contribution of this thesis is development of a single-transistor-single-organic-bistable-device-per-input circuit that approximates behavior of an artificial neuron. The efficacy of this design is validated by comparing the behavior of a single synthetic neuron to that of an artificial neuron as well as two examples involving a network of synthetic neurons. The analysis utilizes electrical characteristics of polymer electronic elements, namely Organic Bistable Device and Organic Field Effect Transistor, created in the laboratory at …

Video Stabilization Using Sift Features, Fuzzy Clustering, And Kalman Filtering, Kevin Veon Jan 2011

Video Stabilization Using Sift Features, Fuzzy Clustering, And Kalman Filtering, Kevin Veon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Video stabilization removes unwanted motion from video sequences, often caused by vibrations or other instabilities. This improves video viewability and can aid in detection and tracking in computer vision algorithms. We have developed a digital video stabilization process using scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) features for tracking motion between frames. These features provide information about location and orientation in each frame. The orientation information is generally not available with other features, so we employ this knowledge directly in motion estimation. We use a fuzzy clustering scheme to separate the SIFT features representing camera motion from those representing the motion of moving …

Reference Set Metrics For Multi-Objective Algorithms, Chilukuri K. Mohan, Kishan Mehrotra Jan 2011

Reference Set Metrics For Multi-Objective Algorithms, Chilukuri K. Mohan, Kishan Mehrotra

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Several metrics and indicators have been suggested in the past to evaluate multi-objective evolutionary and non-evolutionary algo- rithms. However, these metrics are known to have many problems that make their application sometimes unsound, and sometimes infeasible. This paper proposes a new approach, in which metrics are parameter- ized with respect to a reference set, on which depend the properties of any metric.

Spatial Whitening Framework For Distributed Estimation, Swarnendu Kar, Pramod K. Varshney Jan 2011

Spatial Whitening Framework For Distributed Estimation, Swarnendu Kar, Pramod K. Varshney

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Designing resource allocation strategies for power constrained sensor network in the presence of correlated data often gives rise to intractable problem formulations. In such situations, applying well-known strategies derived from conditionalindependence assumption may turn out to be fairly suboptimal. In this paper, we address this issue by proposing an adjacency-based spatial whitening scheme, where each sensor exchanges its observation with their neighbors prior to encoding their own private information and transmitting it to the fusion center. We comment on the computational limitations for obtaining the optimal whitening transformation, and propose an iterative optimization scheme to achieve the same for large …

The Effects Of Tank Operation And Design Characteristics On Water Quality In Distribution System Storage Tanks, Christopher T. Olson, Delvin Deboer Jan 2011

The Effects Of Tank Operation And Design Characteristics On Water Quality In Distribution System Storage Tanks, Christopher T. Olson, Delvin Deboer

Water and Environmental Engineering Research Reports

From the Executive Summary

Background:
Regional water systems utilize storage facilities to meet demand variations and pressure requirements of their systems. These storage facilities drain and fill in response to system water demands and water level control settings. Storage tanks are typically placed in strategic locations to maintain a consistent pressure in the distribution system. Storage facilities should be designed and operated such that the water is mixed to prevent stagnant water (old water that remains in the tank for an extended period). Stagnant water can lead to water quality issues, such as low disinfectant residuals, potential for microbial contamination, …

Landfill Temperatures Under Variable Decomposition Conditions, Nazli Yesiller, James L. Hanson, H. Yoshida Jan 2011

Landfill Temperatures Under Variable Decomposition Conditions, Nazli Yesiller, James L. Hanson, H. Yoshida

Civil and Environmental Engineering

This study was conducted to evaluate temperature, gas, and leachate data at two landfills in similar climatic regions (Detroit, Michigan, USA and Asahikawa, Hokkaido, Japan) to determine the interrelations between heat production and resulting waste temperatures and gas and leachate levels in landfills under variable decomposition conditions. Significant temperature increases occurred under long-term anaerobic conditions. Stable elevated temperatures under anaerobic conditions were observed for wastes at central locations. Seasonal fluctuations in both temperature and gas existed at shallow depths and near perimeter locations. Placement of an overfill of fresh wastes over old wastes affected temperatures, yet did not significantly influence …

Variability And Accuracy Of Target Displacement From Nonlinear Static Procedures, Rakesh K. Goel Jan 2011

Variability And Accuracy Of Target Displacement From Nonlinear Static Procedures, Rakesh K. Goel

Civil and Environmental Engineering

This paper compares the target displacement estimate from four current nonlinear static procedures—FEMA-356 CM, ASCE41 CM, ATC-40 CSM, and FEMA-440 CSM—with the value derived from recorded motions of five strongly shaken reinforced concrete buildings. This comparison provides useful insight into two important questions: (1) how much does the target displacement vary among the four nonlinear static procedures? and (2) can the engineering profession “accurately” predict the response of a real building during an earthquake event using currently available modeling techniques and pushover analysis procedures? It is shown that these procedures may lead to significantly different estimates of the target displacement, particularly …

Comparison Of Base Shears Estimated From Floor Accelerations And Column Shears, Rakesh K. Goel Jan 2011

Comparison Of Base Shears Estimated From Floor Accelerations And Column Shears, Rakesh K. Goel

Civil and Environmental Engineering

This paper compares base shears computed from floor accelerations (inertial base shear) and column shears (structural base shear) for two mid-rise, multistory buildings due to a suite of 30 earthquake ground motions. The presented results demonstrate that the inertial base shear exceeds the structural base shear in the median by 10% to 20% and may exceed the structural base shear by as much as 70% for individual ground motions. Therefore, it is concluded that the inertial base shear computed from strong motion records should be used with caution to estimate the structural base shear.

Building A Visual Front-End For Audio-Visual Automatic Speech Recognition In Vehicle Environments, Robert Hursig, Jane Zhang

Electrical Engineering

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) holds the promise of providing a natural, efficient, and safer means for communication between humans and computers and can profoundly change the way we live. Since its invention in the 1950s, ASR has witnessed considerable research activities and in recent years is finding its way into practical applications as evidenced by more and more consumer devices such as PDAs and mobile phones adding ASR features. While mainstream ASR has focused almost exclusively on the acoustic signal, the performance of these systems degrades considerably in the real-world in the presence of noise. One way to overcome this …

The technique is then applied to two systems of interest, Al-Ti-B, and Al-Ti-B4C. In all three investigations, x-ray diffraction is used to characterize the product phases …

Compressed Sensing Based Cyclic Feature Spectrum Sensing For Cognitive Radios, Yohannes Z. Tafesse Jan 2011

Compressed Sensing Based Cyclic Feature Spectrum Sensing For Cognitive Radios, Yohannes Z. Tafesse

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Spectrum sensing is currently one of the most challenging design problems in cognitive radio. A robust spectrum sensing technique is important in allowing implementation of a practical dynamic spectrum access in noisy and interference uncertain environments. In addition, it is desired to minimize the sensing time, while meeting the stringent cognitive radio application requirements. To cope with this challenge, cyclic spectrum sensing techniques have been proposed. However, such techniques require very high sampling rates in the wideband regime and thus are costly in hardware implementation and power consumption. In this thesis the concept of compressed sensing is applied to circumvent …

Evaluation Of The Performance And Cost-Effectiveness Of Pavement Sections Containing Open-Graded Base Courses, Abdul A. Koroma Jan 2011

Evaluation Of The Performance And Cost-Effectiveness Of Pavement Sections Containing Open-Graded Base Courses, Abdul A. Koroma

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Moisture induced distresses have been the prevalent distress type affecting the deterioration of both asphalt and concrete pavement sections. While various surface techniques have been employed over the years to minimize the ingress of moisture into the pavement structural sections, subsurface drainage components like open-graded base courses remain the best alternative in minimizing the time the pavement structural sections are exposed to saturated conditions. This research therefore focuses on assessing the performance and cost-effectiveness of pavement sections containing both treated and untreated open-graded aggregate base materials.

Three common roadway aggregates comprising of two virgin aggregates and one recycled aggregate were …
