Meeting Engineering Program Objectives Through Service Learning Opportunities In Developing Countries, Jeffrey M. Plumblee, Lansford Bell, Leidy E. Klotz

Publications

The civil engineering profession, in an adaptive reaction to emerging roles for civil engineers, is recognizing the need for new engineers to possess a more robust skill set than just the typical design background. This paper describes the efforts of Clemson Engineers for Developing Countries (CEDC) to fulfill the more nontraditional and often unaddressed “learning outcomes” noted by ASCE’s Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge for the 21st Century as important prerequisites for licensure. The learning outcomes are addressed through ongoing international service learning projects in Cange, Haiti. The paper focuses on the following four outcomes and their fulfillment methods: leadership, …

Quantifying Uncertainties In The Modelled Estimates Of Extreme Precipitation Events At The Upper Thames River Basin, Tarana A. Solaiman, Slobodan P. Simonovic

Water Resources Research Report

Assessment of climate change impact on hydrology at watershed scale incorporates downscaling of global scale climatic variables into local scale hydrologic variables and computations of risk of hydrologic extremes in future for water resources planning and management. Atmosphere-Ocean General Circulation (AOGCM) models are designed to simulate time series of future climate responses accounting for enthropogenically induced green house gas emissions. The climatological inputs obtained from several AOGCMs suffer the limitations due to incomplete knowledge arising from the inherent physical, chemical processes and the parameterization of the model structure. This study explores the methods available for quantifying uncertainties from the AOGCM …

Enabling And Understanding Failure Of Engineering Structures Using The Technique Of Cohesive Elements, H. Jiang, Xiaosheng Gao, T. S. Srivatsan Feb 2011

Enabling And Understanding Failure Of Engineering Structures Using The Technique Of Cohesive Elements, H. Jiang, Xiaosheng Gao, T. S. Srivatsan

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

In this paper, we describe a cohesive zone model for the prediction of failure of engineering solids and/or structures. A damage evolution law is incorporated into a three-dimensional, exponential cohesive law to account for material degradation under the influence of cyclic loading. This cohesive zone model is implemented in the finite element software ABAQUS through a user defined subroutine. The irreversibility of the cohesive zone model is first verified and subsequently applied for studying cyclic crack growth in specimens experiencing different modes of fracture and/or failure. The crack growth behavior to include both crack initiation and crack propagation becomes a …

Development Of An Open Source Bridge Management System, Michael H. Scott Feb 2011

Development Of An Open Source Bridge Management System, Michael H. Scott

TREC Final Reports

A bridge management system is developed using the Tcl scripting language in conjunction with the OpenSees finite element software framework. Fully programmable and string-based, Tcl is ideal for implementing live load analysis through scripts and experimenting with emergent bridge rating methodologies. Since Tcl is an interpreted language, the application also has the important advantage that new bridge capacity models and rating factor calculations can be implemented on multiple platforms without compiling source code. The network programming features of Tcl give the system access to databases for conducting internet-based bridge rating. The system is demonstrated for rating a conventionally reinforced concrete …

Mechanical Behavior Of Bio-Inspired Laminated Composites, Liang Cheng, Adam Thomas, James L. Glancey, Anette M. Karlsson

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

To investigate if the relative high strength and stiffness of biological composites can be translated into man-made materials, innovative bio-inspired laminated composites with commercial materials (glass epoxy prepreg) were designed and manufactured by incorporating the distinctive helicoidal morphology observed in the exoskeletons of crustaceans. The helicoidal structure is characterized by a stacking sequence consisting of a gradual rotation of each lamina in the multi-layered laminated composites. Variations of the helicoidal structure were designed and produced to address some important issues encountered in the practical composites manufacturing process, including mid-plane symmetry. In addition, composite structures with a general quasi-isotropic configuration were …

An Extended Cavity Method To Analyze Slot Coupling Between Printed Circuit Board Cavities, Gang Feng, Jun Fan Feb 2011

An Extended Cavity Method To Analyze Slot Coupling Between Printed Circuit Board Cavities, Gang Feng, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In high-speed multilayer printed circuit boards, gaps are commonly used in planes, where different areas are utilized for different logic levels or where noise isolation from one area to another is necessary. However, these gap structures could present serious signal integrity and electromagnetic interference issues. in this paper, an extended cavity method is developed to characterize noise coupling caused by slots or gaps in the middle plane of a three-plane structure. According to the equivalence principle, the entire structure can be divided into two plane pairs without any slot in the middle plane, and then, equivalent magnetic currents are needed …

Study Of Emission Turbulence-Radiation Interaction In Hypersonic Boundary Layers, L. (Lian) Duan, M. P. Martín, I. Sohn, D. A. Levin, M. F. Modest

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Direct numerical simulations are conducted to study the effects of emission turbulence-radiation interaction in hypersonic turbulent boundary layers, representative of the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle at peak-heating condition during reentry. A nondimensional governing parameter to measure the significance of emission turbulence-radiation interaction is proposed, and the direct numerical simulation fields with and without emission coupling are used to assess emission turbulence-radiation interaction. Both the uncoupled and coupled results show that there is no sizable interaction between turbulence and emission at the hypersonic environment under investigation. An explanation of why the intensity of emission turbulence-radiation interaction in the hypersonic boundary layer …

Interoperable Credentials Management For Wholesale Banking, Glenn Benson, Shiu-Kai Chin, Sean Croston, Karthick Jayaraman, Susan Older Feb 2011

Interoperable Credentials Management For Wholesale Banking, Glenn Benson, Shiu-Kai Chin, Sean Croston, Karthick Jayaraman, Susan Older

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

A gap exists between wholesale-banking business practices and security best practices: wholesale banks operate within the boundaries of contract law, while security best practices often relies upon a benevolent trusted party outside the scope of straightforward contracts. While some business domains may be able to bridge this gap, the ultra-high-value transactions used in business-to-business banking substantially increase the size of the gap. The gap becomes most apparent when regarded from the perspective of interoperability. If a single user applies the same credential to sign high-value transactions at multiple banks, then the trusted-party model becomes overly cumbersome and conflicts with an …

Measuring Degradation Rates Without Irradiance Data, Steve Pulver, Daniel Cormode, Alex Cronin, Dirk C. Jordan, Ryan Smith, Sarah R. Kurtz Feb 2011

Measuring Degradation Rates Without Irradiance Data, Steve Pulver, Daniel Cormode, Alex Cronin, Dirk C. Jordan, Ryan Smith, Sarah R. Kurtz

Publications (E)

A method to report PV system degradation rates without using irradiance data is demonstrated. First, a set of relative degradation rates are determined by comparing daily AC final yields from a group of PV systems relative to the average final yield of all the PV systems. Then, the difference between relative and absolute degradation rates is found from a statistical analysis. This approach is verified by comparing to methods that utilize irradiance data. This approach is significant because PV systems are often deployed without irradiance sensors, so the analysis method described here may enable measurements of degradation using data that …

In this paper, three dimensional finite element models are developed to examine the fracture behavior of a single edge V-notched Aluminum plate repaired with Kevlar-49/epoxy or e-glass/epoxy pre-preg patches on both sides. Contour integral method was used for evaluating the stress intensity factor (SIF), an indicator of the crack stability. The load transfer mechanisms, stress distribution, damage variable (D), and crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD), were also presented to estimate the …

Bacterial Killing By Dry Metallic Copper Surfaces, Christophe Espírito Santo, Ee Wen Lam, Christian Elowsky, Davide Quaranta, Dylan W. Domaille, Christopher J. Chang, Gregor Grass Feb 2011

Bacterial Killing By Dry Metallic Copper Surfaces, Christophe Espírito Santo, Ee Wen Lam, Christian Elowsky, Davide Quaranta, Dylan W. Domaille, Christopher J. Chang, Gregor Grass

Nebraska Center for Biotechnology: Faculty and Staff Publications

Metallic copper surfaces rapidly and efficiently kill bacteria. Cells exposed to copper surfaces accumulated large amounts of copper ions, and this copper uptake was faster from dry copper than from moist copper. Cells suffered extensive membrane damage within minutes of exposure to dry copper. Further, cells removed from copper showed loss of cell integrity. Acute contact with metallic copper surfaces did not result in increased mutation rates or DNA lesions. These findings are important first steps for revealing the molecular sensitive targets in cells lethally challenged by exposure to copper surfaces and provide a scientific explanation for the use of …

Bayesian Models For Reidentification Of Trucks Over Long Distances On The Basis Of Axle Measurement Data, Mecit Cetin, Christopher Monsere, Andrew Nichols

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Vehicle reidentification methods can be used to anonymously match vehicles crossing 2 different locations on the basis of vehicle attribute data. In this article, reidentification methods are developed to match commercial vehicles that cross 2 weigh-in-motion sites in Oregon that are separated by 145 miles. Using vehicle length and axle data as attributes to characterize vehicles, a Bayesian model is developed that uses probability density functions obtained by fitting Gaussian mixture models to a sample data set of matched vehicles. The reidentification model when applied to a test data set (where each downstream vehicle also crosses the upstream site) matches …
