Predictive Modeling And Analysis Of Student Academic Performance In An Engineering Dynamics Course, Shaobo Huang

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Engineering dynamics is a fundamental sophomore-level course required for many engineering students. This course is also one of the most challenging courses in which many students fail because it requires students to have not only solid mathematical skills but also a good understanding of dynamics concepts and principles.

The overall goal of this study was to develop a validated set of mathematical models to predict student academic performance in an engineering dynamics course taught in the College of Engineering at Utah State University. The predictive models will help the instructor to understand how well or how poorly the students in …

Managing Water Shortages In The Weber Basin Using The Water Evaluation And Planning (Weap) System, Bereket K. Tesfatsion

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Water is a scarce natural resource while the demand for water grows constantly. In Utah, most of the water resources have already been developed. In addition, Utah is prone to drought events and the effects of climate change may exacerbate the already dire situation. Hence, managing this scarce resource efficiently is very important in meeting the growing demand.

Reservoirs are used to store water which is subsequently released to meet demands. For management purposes, reservoirs have different zones such as flood control zone, conservation zone, buffer zone and inactive zone. Water is normally released from the conservation zone. The water …

Prediction Models For Estimation Of Soil Moisture Content, Swathi Gorthi Dec 2011

Prediction Models For Estimation Of Soil Moisture Content, Swathi Gorthi

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Center for Self-Organizing Intelligent Systems (CSOIS) has been successful in developing personal remote sensing systems. These systems can be further enhanced to monitor important resources of earth such as soil moisture content. Soil moisture is the major component of the soil in relation to plant growth. Soil water dissolves salts and makes up the soil solution, which is important as medium for supply of nutrients to growing plants.

Usually, measuring such physical quantities would include using derived formulas that mathematically describe the relationships between the parameters involved. With the advancements in computer modeling, other methods such as empirical modeling …

Designing Predictive Mathematical Models For The Metabolic Pathways Associated With Polyhydroxybutyrate Synthesis In Escherichia Coli, Angela Dixon

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Plastics are a versatile and widely used material. However, traditional plastics are derived from petrochemicals and are not biodegradable. Polymers synthesized from microorganisms that have similar properties to plastic are potential biodegradable replacements. The objective of this project is to use mathematical modeling as a tool to engineer a strain of bacteria optimized for the production of bio-plastics.

Production costs can be reduced by using a bacterial strain specifically optimized for bio-plastic production. By reducing production costs, bio-plastics will be able to commercially compete with traditional plastics. Society will benefit as bio-plastics replace traditional plastics. Fossil fuels will not be …

Fish Passage Through Rehabilitated Culverts Laboratory Study, Amber H. Olsen Dec 2011

Fish Passage Through Rehabilitated Culverts Laboratory Study, Amber H. Olsen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Slip lining culverts represent a low-cost technique that can restore life to decaying culverts. However, slip liners are smoother than typical host culverts; therefore, they generate higher flow velocities and lower flow depths within the culvert, which are fish passage barriers. One way to mitigate these barriers is by installing baffles. Unfortunately baffles can jeopardize the flow capacity of the culvert.

The Utah Water Research Laboratory (UWRL) at Utah State University contracted with the Utah Department of Transportation for $85,000 to test the effectiveness of baffles in improving fish passage through culverts. The goal of this project was to identify …

Frequency Response Of A Gas-Filled Tube With Minor Losses, Brian M. West

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A thesis on the study of the frequency response of a pneumatic system designed to provide pulsed flow for flow control applications is presented. The system consists of a high pressure air source, a high-frequency solenoid valve, a length of tube and a minor loss. The experiment mimics the pneumatic drive for our Coanda-Assisted Spray Manipulation actuator and applies to many flow control applications involving pulsed flow. Square wave signals of various frequency are fed to the solenoid valve. The flow at the exit of the system is measured with a single hot wire and compared to steady flow through …

Air Demand In Low-Level Outlet Works, Jason Arthur Larchar Dec 2011

Air Demand In Low-Level Outlet Works, Jason Arthur Larchar

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Most dams have a low-level outlet that consists of a closed conduit through the dam with a slide gate or valve to regulate flow. These outlets are used mainly for irrigational purposes but also for flushing the reservoir and controlling the reservoir elevation. When discharging through the low-level outlet works, negative pressures can develop on the downstream side of the gate creating a potential for cavitation damage and vibration. To minimize these effects, air vents (vented to the atmosphere) are installed on the downstream side of the gate to limit downstream pressure to something above vapor pressure (i.e., near atmospheric …

Optimal Charging Scheduling For Battery Electric Vehicles Under Smart Grid., Nur Dayana Abd Rahman Dec 2011

Optimal Charging Scheduling For Battery Electric Vehicles Under Smart Grid., Nur Dayana Abd Rahman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A projected high penetration of battery electric vehicles (BEV s) in the market will introduce an additional load in the electricity grid. Furthermore, uncontrolled BEV charging from residential users will exacerbate the existing peak load during evening hours. In this thesis, we propose two optimization models to alleviate the impact of extra demand from electric vehicles on the power grid. The first is a centralized charging scheduling model that coordinates the charging among BEV users under the goal of minimizing the total electricity cost for all users. The second model uses a decentralized agent-based approach to scheduling the BEV charging. …

Comparative Evaluation Of Conventional Soldier Pile/Lagging Retention Systems Versus Soil Nailing Retention Systems., Abdul Amir Al-Helu 1966- Dec 2011

Comparative Evaluation Of Conventional Soldier Pile/Lagging Retention Systems Versus Soil Nailing Retention Systems., Abdul Amir Al-Helu 1966-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An investigation was made into the relative costs of excavation retention by two systems: conventional soldier pile-wale-tieback support, and support by soil nailing. The investigation included design of excavation supports by the two aforementioned systems for fifteen actual excavations, the majority of which were accomplished in the Louisville, Kentucky area. The design was optimized to arrive at minimum cost solutions. In all cases, the soil nailing system was much less costly than the conventional system. Several factors appeared to make soil nailing more economical than conventional retention systems, if deformations and settlement of soil nailing systems can be tolerated: lower …

Linear Electromagnetic Energy Scavenging Device Designed In Low Temperature Co-Fired Ceramics, Hope A. Bateman Dec 2011

Linear Electromagnetic Energy Scavenging Device Designed In Low Temperature Co-Fired Ceramics, Hope A. Bateman

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

For a soldier deployed in a remote location on the earth or a recreational hiker in the wilderness or a wild land firefighter battling a destructive wildfire, access to a power source is problematic. Local and regional communication systems, navigation, lights, imaging: all of these require a power source. For short time periods, batteries may be sufficient but with extended time periods the weight of the batteries and cost of replacement becomes a problem. Energy scavenging devices could fill this need and be used as a secondary power source when solar or batteries are not available.

A linear electromagnetic generator …

Effects Of Grain Boundary Character On Dynamic Recrystallization Using A Modified Monte Carlo Method, Michael B. Morse Dec 2011

Effects Of Grain Boundary Character On Dynamic Recrystallization Using A Modified Monte Carlo Method, Michael B. Morse

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Dynamic recrystallization (DRX) is the recrystallization that occurs during high temperature deformation of metals and alloys. While DRX has been observed experimentally, the parameters that affect the microstructure are still being explored. For example, the effects of temperature, strain rate, and initial grain size have already been studied, yet the effect of initial special boundary fraction is still unknown. Special boundaries are high-angle, low-energy grain boundaries. It is believed that higher initial fractions of special boundaries will lead to a delay in the onset of recrystallization and a higher peak stress.

Experimentation has shown that triple junctions are preferred nucleation …

Spark Plasma Sintering Of Tungsten And Tungsten-Ceria: Microstructures And Kinetics, Jeffrey Bryce Perkins Dec 2011

Spark Plasma Sintering Of Tungsten And Tungsten-Ceria: Microstructures And Kinetics, Jeffrey Bryce Perkins

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Tungsten casting is impractical, and tungsten compacts are most often produced by press-and-sinter or by hot pressing. The temperatures typically required to sinter tungsten above 90% dense are above 1800 ºC, and sintering times are typically hours. Alternatively, spark plasma sintering (SPS) can be used to consolidate materials to high densities at lower temperatures and shorter times than traditional sintering techniques. In this study, pure tungsten and tungsten with 1, 4, 10, 15, and 20 weight percent ceria were spark plasma sintered at varying pressures, temperatures, and times to investigate the microstructures and the kinetics of sintering.

Densification of tungsten …

Matlab/Simulink Implementation And Analysis Of Three Pulse-Width-Modulation (Pwm) Techniques, Phuong Hue Tran Dec 2011

Matlab/Simulink Implementation And Analysis Of Three Pulse-Width-Modulation (Pwm) Techniques, Phuong Hue Tran

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

With advances in solid-state power electronic devices and microprocessors, various pulse-width-modulation (PWM) techniques have been developed for industrial applications. For example, PWM-based three-phase voltage source inverters (VSI) convert DC power to AC power with variable voltage magnitude and variable frequency.

This thesis discusses the advantages and drawbacks of three different PWM techniques: the sinusoidalPWM(SPWM) technique, the third-harmonic-injection PWM(THIPWM) technique, and the space-vector PWM (SVPWM) technique. These three methods are compared by discussing their ease of implementation and by analyzing the output harmonic spectra of various output voltages (poles voltages, line-to-neutral voltages, and line-to-line voltages) and their total harmonic distortion (THD). …

Mechanical Engineering

With the slowly diminishing supply of fossil fuels across the world and the heightened risk of carbon dioxide pollution leading to global warming, a shift towards renewable energy is gaining momentum. Recent advances in wind and solar power technology have increased the power density of alternative sources while decreasing the cost per kilowatt-hour, but the technology has not become advanced enough yet for large scale deployment. Combined Power Cooperative has developed a revolutionary design for a concentrated solar power plant that utilizes Fresnel reflectors and a large body of water in which to install them. In addition to being low-cost, …

The Sources Of Heat Generation In Vibrothermography, Jeremy Renshaw, John Chen, Stephen Holland, R. Bruce Thompson Dec 2011

The Sources Of Heat Generation In Vibrothermography, Jeremy Renshaw, John Chen, Stephen Holland, R. Bruce Thompson

Mechanical Engineering

Vibrothermography, or sonic IR, is a nondestructive evaluation technique used to find surface and near surface defects—such as cracks and delaminations—through observations of vibration-induced heat generation. This method has significant interest as an industrial inspection method, however, a lack of understanding of the fundamental physics governing the heat generation process has limited its application despite extensive theoretical, numerical simulation, and experimental work. Significant theoretical and numerical simulation work has been performed, but has yet to be rigorously verified experimentally. This paper presents experimental verification of the sources of heat generation in vibrothermography; specifically friction, plasticity, and viscoelasticity. Specific experimental evidence …

Field-Controlled Electron Transfer And Reaction Kinetics Of The Biological Catalytic System Of Microperoxidase-11 And Hydrogen Peroxide, Yongki Chou, Siu-Tung Yau

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Controlled reaction kinetics of the bio-catalytic system of microperoxidase-11 and hydrogen peroxide has been achieved using an electrostatic technique. The technique allowed independent control of 1) the thermodynamics of the system using electrochemical setup and 2) the quantum mechanical tunneling at the interface between microperoxidase-11 and the working electrode by applying a gating voltage to the electrode. The cathodic currents of electrodes immobilized with microperoxidase-11 showed a dependence on the gating voltage in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, indicating a controllable reduction reaction. The measured kinetic parameters of the bio-catalytic reduction showed nonlinear dependences on the gating voltage as the …

Direct Contact Pyrolysis Of Hydrocarbons: A Source Of Hydrogen And Interesting Carbon Formations, Peter G. Faught Dec 2011

Direct Contact Pyrolysis Of Hydrocarbons: A Source Of Hydrogen And Interesting Carbon Formations, Peter G. Faught

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The work detailed in this document looks at a novel liquid metal supported catalytic system for the generation of hydrogen by decomposition of ethanol through direct contact pyrolysis. The hydrogen is produced at relatively low temperatures (500-600°C) and has carbon and water as co-products. It should be noted that CO is not observed as a product at these low temperatures. This is to be contrasted with the hydrogen produced at higher temperature from ethanol which does contain carbon monoxide. The presence of carbon monoxide in hydrogen complicates fuel cell operation and catalytic chemical processes. Thus, the lack of CO in …

Reduced Gravity Landing Research Vehicle Design, Sarah Isert Dec 2011

Reduced Gravity Landing Research Vehicle Design, Sarah Isert

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Human and robotic missions beyond low earth orbit (LEO) are key components of NASA's currently emerging strategy for space exploration. These missions will inevitably include humancrewed lunar and planetary surface landings. Trips to near-earth asteroids are also in the incipient planning stages. A permanent presence on the surface of an extra terrestrial body like Mars or the Moon will require many landings by both human-crewed and robotic spacecraft.

Planetary and lunar surface landings are inherently dangerous undertakings, and successful landings are indeed rare events. Since the end of the Apollo era with the completion of the Apollo 17 mission in …

'Exploring The Potential Of Using Antimicrobial Peptides And Copper Nanoparticles In Tackling Surgical Site Infections', Sriram Sankar Dec 2011

'Exploring The Potential Of Using Antimicrobial Peptides And Copper Nanoparticles In Tackling Surgical Site Infections', Sriram Sankar

All Theses

Postoperative wound site infections remain a major source of illness with approximately 500,000 infections per year, among an estimated 27 million surgical procedures. Such infections account for approximately one quarter of the estimated 2 million nosocomial infections in the United States which causes about 90,000 deaths each year. More than 70% of the bacteria that causes such infections are resistant to at least one of the antibiotics and result in longer hospitalization; besides requiring second option treatments that may be less effective, more toxic and expensive. Hence, there is a frenetic search for alternatives and in this regard, antimicrobial peptides …

A Comparison Of The Performance Of Neural Q-Learning And Soar-Rl On A Derivative Of The Block Design (Bd)/Block Design Multiple Choice (Bdmc) Subtests On The Wisc-Iv Intelligence Test, Charreau Bell

All Theses

Teaching an autonomous agent to perform tasks that are simple to humans can be complex, especially when the task requires successive steps, has a low likelihood of successful completion with a brute force approach, and when the solution space is too large or too complex to be explicitly encoded. Reinforcement learning algorithms are particularly suited to such situations, and are based on rewards that help the agent to find the optimal action to execute given a certain state. The task investigated in this thesis is a modified form of the Block Design (BD) and Block Design Multiple Choice (BDMC) subtests, …

Parallel Implementation Of The Singular Value Decomposition Using Opencl, Bhushan Rayrikar Dec 2011

Parallel Implementation Of The Singular Value Decomposition Using Opencl, Bhushan Rayrikar

All Theses

General-Purpose Graphics Processing Units (GPGPUs) have massively parallel computational capabilities. Low cost and ease of programming make them a popular choice over other parallel architectures such as large clusters and accelerators such as Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Mature programming frameworks for GPGPUs, such as CUDA from Nvidia and OpenCL from the Khronos Group, reduce the learning curve and development time for programming GPGPU architectures. OpenCL, a relatively new industry standard for parallel computing makes it possible to write a single program for heterogeneous platforms that is portable across multiple platforms including GPGPUs and multi-core processors with minimal coding modifications.
