Three-Dimensional Security Barrier Impact Response Modeling, Ratul D. Sarmah, Christopher Y. Tuan Apr 2011

Three-Dimensional Security Barrier Impact Response Modeling, Ratul D. Sarmah, Christopher Y. Tuan

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

The occurrence of terrorist vehicular bomb attacks has been frequently reported. Perimeter security barriers are designed and guilt to defeat vehicle penetration. Due to the complexity of designing a security barrier, the current practice is to physically crash test the barrier head-on with a threat vehicle, at a certain velocity as a validation of the design. As full-scale vehicular crash tests are costly, facility designers are often forced to use existing barriers without the benefit of designing new, innovative and cost-effective systems for a specific threat. With the present-day computing capability, conducting three-dimensional simulations of vehicular crash dynamics on a …

Synthesis Of Quantum Circuits In Linear Nearest Neighbor Model Using Positive Davio Lattices, Marek Perkowski, Martin Lukac, Dipal Shah, Michitaka Kameyama

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present a logic synthesis method based on lattices that realize quantum arrays in One-Dimensional Ion Trap technology. This means that all gates are built from 2x2 quantum primitives that are located only on neighbor qubits in a onedimensional space (called also vector of qubits or Linear Nearest Neighbor (LNN) architecture). The Logic circuits designed by the proposed method are realized only with 3*3 Toffoli, Feynman and NOT quantum gates and the usage of the commonly used multi-input Toffoli gates is avoided. This realization method of quantum circuits is different from most of reversible circuits synthesis methods from the literature …

Numerical Prediction Of The Haemodynamic Impact Of Coronary Stent Implantation, Jonathan Murphy Apr 2011

Numerical Prediction Of The Haemodynamic Impact Of Coronary Stent Implantation, Jonathan Murphy

Doctoral

Arterial restenosis limits the effectiveness of coronary stenting. Restenosis is caused by excessive tissue growth which is stimulated by arterial injury and alterations to the arterial WSS. The altered WSS results from stent-induced disturbances to the natural haelnodynamics of the artery. Recent numerical studies have predcted only minor digerences in altered WSS between different stent designs using a commonly employed threshold assessment technique. While it is possible that there are only minor differences, it is more likely that the assessment technique is incapable of fully elucidating the altered WSS created by stent implantation. This thesis proposes a methodology that involves …

Theoretical Analysis Of Laterally Vibrating Microcantilever Sensors In A Viscous Liquid Medium, Russell Cox Apr 2011

Theoretical Analysis Of Laterally Vibrating Microcantilever Sensors In A Viscous Liquid Medium, Russell Cox

Dissertations (1934 -)

Dynamically driven microcantilevers are normally excited into resonance in the out-of-plane flexural mode. The beam's resonant frequency and quality factor are used to characterize the devices. The devices are well suited for operation in air, but are limited in viscous liquid media due to the increased viscous damping. In order to improve these characteristics, other vibration modes such as the in-plane (or lateral) flexural mode are investigated. In this work, microcantilevers vibrating in the in-plane flexural mode (or lateral direction) in a viscous liquid medium are investigated. The hydrodynamic forces on the microcantilever as a function of both Reynolds number …

Measuring Progress With Normalized Energy Intensity, Nathan Lammers, J. Kelly Kissock, Brian Abels, Franc Server Apr 2011

Measuring Progress With Normalized Energy Intensity, Nathan Lammers, J. Kelly Kissock, Brian Abels, Franc Server

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Energy standard ISO 50001 will require industries to quantify improvement in energy intensity to qualify for certification. This paper describes a four-step method to analyze utility billing, weather, and production data to quantify a company's normalized energy intensity over time. The method uses 3-pararameter change-point regression modeling of utility billing data against weather and production data to derive energy signature equations. The energy signature equation is driven by typical weather and production data to calculate the 'normal annual consumption', NAC, and divided by typical production to calculate 'normalized energy intensity' NEI. These steps are repeated on sequential sets of 12 …

Optimizing Compressed Air Storage For Energy Efficiency, Brian Abels, J. Kelly Kissock Apr 2011

Optimizing Compressed Air Storage For Energy Efficiency, Brian Abels, J. Kelly Kissock

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Compressed air storage is an important, but often misunderstood, component of compressed air systems. This paper discusses methods to properly size compressed air storage in load-unload systems to avoid short cycling and reduce system energy use. First, key equations relating storage, pressure, and compressed air flow are derived using fundamental thermodynamic relations. Next, these relations are used to calculate the relation between volume of storage and cycle time in load-unload compressors. It is shown that cycle time is minimized when compressed air demand is 50% of compressor capacity. The effect of pressure drop between compressor system and storage on cycle …

To build an understanding of these interactions, scientists, planners, resource managers, policy makers, and communities increasingly are collaborating across wide-ranging disciplines and knowledge domains. Scientists and others are generating new integrated knowledge on top of their requisite specialized knowledge to understand complex systems in order to solve pressing environmental and social problems (e.g., Carpenter et al. 2009). One approach to this sort of integration, bringing together detailed knowledge of various disciplines (e.g., social, economic, biological, and geophysical), has become known as the …

Conical Probe Calibration And Wind Tunnel Data Analysis Of The Channeled Centerbody Inlet Experiment, Samson Siu Truong Apr 2011

Conical Probe Calibration And Wind Tunnel Data Analysis Of The Channeled Centerbody Inlet Experiment, Samson Siu Truong

Aerospace Engineering

For a multi-hole test probe undergoing wind tunnel tests, the resulting data needs to be analyzed for any significant trends.  These trends include relating the pressure distributions, the geometric orientation, and the local velocity vector to one another.  However, experimental runs always involve some sort of error.  As a result, a calibration procedure is required to compensate for this error.  For this case, it is the misalignment bias angles resulting from the distortion associated with the angularity of the test probe or the local velocity vector.  Through a series of calibration steps presented here, the angular biases are determined and …

Intraseasonal Management Strategies For Deficit Irrigation, Isaac I. N. Mortensen Apr 2011

Intraseasonal Management Strategies For Deficit Irrigation, Isaac I. N. Mortensen

Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Reduced availability of irrigation water to producers has led to the need for intraseasonal management strategies that efficiently use the limited supply of irrigation water.  Historical weather data was used to develop a range of conditions experienced at the location.  Sound weather data improves the dependability of management strategies.  Data from weather stations on the Automated Weather Data Network and the Colorado AgMet network were evaluated based upon net radiation and dew point temperature observations expected in an irrigated agricultural setting.  This weather data was used to create a relationship between the Penman-Montieth evapotranspiration (ET) and Hargreaves ET and …

A Novel Approach To The Part Orientation Problem For Robotic Assembly Applications, Brian James Slaboch Apr 2011

A Novel Approach To The Part Orientation Problem For Robotic Assembly Applications, Brian James Slaboch

Master's Theses (2009 -)

SCARA (Selective Compliant Assembly Robot Arm) type robots are the most common type of assembly robots. These robots have four degrees of freedom (three rotational and one translational). Typically these robots are used for assembly tasks that take place along a vertical axis. Many times, however, assembly tasks take place along a non-vertical axis. To account for non- vertical axis assembly, parts must be fed in a proper orientation to allow for correct assembly. Parts feeders and specialized end-effectors are typically used to feed parts in their proper orientation. This thesis investigates a novel end-effector that can be used to …

Propagation Of Plate Acoustic Waves In Contact With Fluid Medium, Nagaraj Ghatadi Suraji Apr 2011

Propagation Of Plate Acoustic Waves In Contact With Fluid Medium, Nagaraj Ghatadi Suraji

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The characteristics of acoustic waves propagating in thin piezoelectric plates in the presence of a fluid medium contacting one or both of the plate surfaces are investigated. If the velocity of plate wave in the substrate is greater than velocity of bulk wave in the fluid, then a plate acoustic wave (PAW) traveling in the substrate will radiate a bulk acoustic wave (BAW) in the fluid. It is found that, under proper conditions, efficient conversion of energy from plate acoustic waves to bulk acoustic waves and vice versa can be obtained. For example, using the fundamental anti symmetric plate wave …

Method Of Tolerance Allocation To Maintain Rotary Balance Of Multi-Component Bodies, Lindsay Louise Rogers Apr 2011

Method Of Tolerance Allocation To Maintain Rotary Balance Of Multi-Component Bodies, Lindsay Louise Rogers

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Vibration of rotating machinery caused by mass imbalance is the most frequent source of unwanted disturbing forces and also the most preventable. In the case of a CT scanner, unwanted vibration in the equipment causes artifacts to the X-ray image, and therefore all measures are taken to eliminate imbalance. The CT scanner is a multi-component rotating body, therefore making it a challenge to account for many discrete components, each with unique variation. This research developed the equations for static and dynamic balance including considerations for inertia. The variation of the components was studied using two models: a sensitivity analysis and …
