Dynamics Of Entanglement In A Two-Dimensional Spin System, Qing Xu, Gehad Sadiek, Sabre Kais
Dynamics Of Entanglement In A Two-Dimensional Spin System, Qing Xu, Gehad Sadiek, Sabre Kais
Birck and NCN Publications
We consider the time evolution of entanglement in a finite two-dimensional transverse Ising model. The model consists of a set of seven localized spin-1/2 particles in a two-dimensional triangular lattice coupled through nearest-neighbor exchange interaction in the presence of an external time-dependent magnetic field. The magnetic field is applied in different function forms: step, exponential, hyperbolic, and periodic. We found that the time evolution of the entanglement shows an ergodic behavior under the effect of the time-dependent magnetic fields. Also, we found that while the step magnetic field causes great disturbance to the system, creating rapid oscillations, the system shows …
Multi-Year Arctic Sea Ice Classification Using Quikscat, Aaron M. Swan
Multi-Year Arctic Sea Ice Classification Using Quikscat, Aaron M. Swan
Theses and Dissertations
Long term trends in Arctic sea ice are of particular interest with regard to global temperature, climate change, and industry. This thesis uses microwave scatterometer data from QuikSCAT and radiometer data to analyze intra- and interannual trends in first-year and multi-year Arctic sea ice. It develops a sea ice type classification method. The backscatter of first-year and multi-year sea ice are clearly identifiable and are observed to vary seasonally. Using an average of the annual backscatter trends obtained from QuikSCAT, a classification of multi-year ice is obtained which is dependent on the day of the year (DOY). Validation of the …

A Direct Sampling Particle Filter From Approximate Conditional Density Function Supported On Constrained State Space, Sridhar Ungarala
A Direct Sampling Particle Filter From Approximate Conditional Density Function Supported On Constrained State Space, Sridhar Ungarala
Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Constraints on the state vector must be taken into account in the state estimation problem. Recently, acceptance/rejection and projection methods are proposed in the particle filter framework for constraining the particles. A weighted least squares formulation is used for constraining samples in unscented and ensemble Kalman filters. In this paper, direct sampling from an approximate conditional probability density function (pdf) is proposed. It is obtained by approximating the a priori pdf as a Gaussian. The support of the conditional density is a subset of the intersection of two supports, the 3-sigma bounds of the priori Gaussian and the constrained state …

Competition for scarce Colorado River water resources is nothing new, but the conflicts that prompted the seven basin states to negotiate the 1922 Colorado River Compact have grown considerably fiercer and more complex in recent decades. In 2007, responding to the challenges of increasing demand and sustained drought, the seven basin states and a number of other affected interests agreed to a set of interim guidelines for allocating Colorado River water in the event of shortages. This agreement represents an important evolution in the governance of the Colorado River, suggesting that the many interests in the basin can work together …

Aerospace Engineering
Composite materials such as a carbon fiber are used in a variety of new technologies including aircraft, spacecraft, and motor vehicles. Carbon fiber has a high strength to weight ratio, a key advantage over other material options. This report discusses the use of composite damage arrestment devices (DADs) in composite sandwich panels with a foam core. There are three different curing cycles tested for the DADs: pressure only, vacuum only, and vacuum with 1000 lbs of pressure. Using a Tetrahedron Heat Press to cure the composite specimen and an Instron Machine to perform tensile testing, data was collected for each …

Composite I-Beam Fabrication And Testing In Response To 14th Annual Sampe Bridge Competition, Kodi Rider, Niño Noel Las Piñas, Hans Mayta
Aerospace Engineering
Composites are a type of material that generally combines two materials yielding mechanical properties that are different than its constituent parts. These constituents are classified as either a fiber or a matrix. The objective of this project is to create a carbon-fiber composite I-beam that meets the specifications of the SAMPE student bridge competition. The I-beam consists of carbon fiber unidirectional and woven laminas, as well as aluminum honeycomb and high density polystyrene foam to stiffen the structure. The bridge contest rules limit the dimensions and weight of the bridge. The cross-section must be within 4 inches x 4 inches …

Finding a general procedure to produce a whole class of materials in a similar way is a desired goal of materials chemistry. In this work, we report a new bamboo-based carbothermal method to prepare nanowires of covalent carbides (SiC and B4C) and interstitial carbides (TiC, TaC, NbC, TixNb1−xC, and TaxNb1−xC). The use of natural nanoporous bamboo as both the renewable carbon source and the template for the formation of catalyst particles greatly simplifies the synthesis process. Based on the structural, morphological and elemental analysis, volatileoxides or halides assisted …
Thermal Analysis Of The Cubesat Cp3 Satellite, Jonas Friedel, Sean Mckibbon
Thermal Analysis Of The Cubesat Cp3 Satellite, Jonas Friedel, Sean Mckibbon
Aerospace Engineering
Due to inconsistencies found in the on-orbit thermal data from the CubeSat CP3 satellite between 2007 and 2011, further analysis is performed on a larger number of data from August 2010 through April 2011, aiming to find an explanation for the overall increasing measured temperatures and shortening peak periods. Therefore, the satellite power data as well as orbital anomalies are analyzed leading to the conclusion that the satellite was temporarily (January – March 2011) orbiting with significantly increased sun exposure causing the higher temperatures. The shortened temperature peak periods are explained by alternating albedo values as the main influence in …

Neural Network Based Edge Detection For Automated Medical Diagnosis, Dingran Lu, Xiao-Hua Yu, Xiaomin Jin, Bin Li, Quan Chen, Jianhua Zhu
Electrical Engineering
Edge detection is an important but rather difficult task in image processing and analysis. In this research, artificial neural networks are employed for edge detection based on its adaptive learning and nonlinear mapping properties. Fuzzy sets are introduced during the training phase to improve the generalization ability of neural networks. The application of the proposed neural network approach to the edge detection of medical images for automated bladder cancer diagnosis is also investigated. Successful computer simulation results are obtained.
Modeling Of A Gyro-Stabilized Helicopter Camera System Using Artificial Neural Networks, Nicholas Layshot, Xiao-Hua Yu
Modeling Of A Gyro-Stabilized Helicopter Camera System Using Artificial Neural Networks, Nicholas Layshot, Xiao-Hua Yu
Electrical Engineering
On-board gimbal systems for camera stabilization in helicopters are typically based on linear models. Such models, however, are inaccurate due to system nonlinearities and complexities. As an alternative approach, artificial neural networks can provide a more accurate model of the gimbal system based on their non-linear mapping and generalization capabilities. This paper investigates the applications of artificial neural networks to model the inertial characteristics (on the azimuth axis) of the inner gimbal in a gyro-stabilized multi-gimbal system. The neural network is trained with time-domain data obtained from gyro rate sensors of an actual camera system. The network performance is evaluated …

Businger and Delany (1990) presented an approach to estimate the sensor resolution required to limit the contribution of the uncertainty in the chemical concentration measurement to uncertainty in the flux measurement to 10 % for eddy covariance, gradient, and relaxed eddy accumulation flux measurement methods. We describe an improvement to their approach to estimate required sensor resolution for the covariance method, and include disjunct eddy covariance. In addition, we provide data to support selection of a form for the dimensionless scalar standard deviation similarity function based on observations of the variance of water vapor fluctuations from recent field experiments. We …
Microstructure And Transport Properties Of Porous Li-Ion Electrodes, David E. Stephenson
Microstructure And Transport Properties Of Porous Li-Ion Electrodes, David E. Stephenson
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this work is to understand the relationships between electrode microstructure and mass transport resistances. One can use this information to predict cell performance from fundamental principles. This work includes new types of particle-scale 3D models for correlating and predicting the effects of electrode microstructure on both ionic and electronic transport. The 3D models imitate the sub-micrometer-scale arrangement of active material particles, carbon, binder, and pores and use FIB/SEM images as a basis for parameterization. The 3D models are based respectively on the statistical mechanics techniques of molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo. The approach closely related to molecular …

BACKGROUND: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe neuromuscular disease that affects 1 in 3500 boys. The disease is characterized by progressive muscle degeneration that results from mutations in or loss of the cytoskeletal protein, dystrophin, from the glycoprotein membrane complex, thus increasing the susceptibility of contractile muscle to injury. To date, disease progression is typically assessed using invasive techniques such as muscle biopsies, and while there are recent reports of the use of magnetic resonance, ultrasound and optical imaging technologies to address the issue of disease progression and monitoring therapeutic intervention in dystrophic mice, our study aims to validate …
Evolving Machine Morality Strategies Through Multiagent Simulations, David Burke
Evolving Machine Morality Strategies Through Multiagent Simulations, David Burke
Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series
There is a general consensus among robotics researchers that the world of the future will be filled with autonomous and semi-autonomous machines. There is less of a consensus, though, on the best approach to instilling a sense of 'machine morality' in these systems so that they will be able to have effective interactions with humans in an increasingly complex world. In my talk, we take a brief look at some existing approaches to computational ethics, and then describe work we've undertaken creating multiagent simulations involving moral decision-making during strategic interactions. In these simulations, agents make choices about whether to cooperate …

A Novel Implementation Of Discrete Complex Image Method For Layered Medium Green's Function, Yongpin P. Chen, Weng Cho Chew, Lijun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A novel implementation of discrete complex image method (DCIM) based on the Sommmerfeld branch cut is proposed to accurately capture the far-field behavior of the layered medium Green's function as a complement to the traditional DCIM. By contour deformation, the Green's function can be naturally decomposed into branch-cut integration (radiation modes) and pole contributions (guided modes). For branch-cut integration, matrix pencil method is applied, and the alternative Sommerfeld identity in terms of kz integration is utilized to get a closed-form solution. The guided modes are accounted for with a pole-searching algorithm. Both one-branch-cut and two-branch-cut cases are studied. Several numerical …
