Acoustic Characterization Of The Nasa Langley 14 X 22 Ft Subsonic Wind Tunnel, James Thomas Crippen Jul 2011

Acoustic Characterization Of The Nasa Langley 14 X 22 Ft Subsonic Wind Tunnel, James Thomas Crippen

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Aero-acoustic testing is used to identify and characterize acoustic sources of test articles within a flow field. Such testing requires high signal-to-background noise level ratios (5 - 10 dB) and an anechoic test chamber. The NASA Langley 14 x 22 ft Subsonic Wind Tunnel is evaluated with respect to operating noise levels and to architectural acoustic characteristics. Operating noise level measurements include power spectral densities, 1/3 octave plots, and overall sound pressure levels. Architectural acoustic measurements are centered around reverberation analysis. A lumped parameter model, based on a technique applied in architectural acoustics to study noise propagation between connected rooms, …

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

About 3.3% of global air ermss1ons m 2007 were due to international shipping operations. If no policies are enacted, the Green House Gas (GHG) emissions would increase by a factor of 2-3 by 2050.

In order to reduce Global Warming, international institutions such as the International Marine Organization and European Maritime Authorities are implementing policies for reduction of NOx and SOx by 2020. Regulations for these gases are indicated in MARPOL Annex VI.

There are four fundamental ways of reducing emissions:

• Improving energy efficiency by modifying ship design or operation strategy

• Using renewable energy sources for …

The Transfer Of Laser-Machined Micro-Structured Patterns From Silicon To Polymethyl Methacrylate, Warren E. Withrow Jul 2011

The Transfer Of Laser-Machined Micro-Structured Patterns From Silicon To Polymethyl Methacrylate, Warren E. Withrow

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This research project's purpose was transferring a micro-scaled pattern from a silicon wafer to a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), or acrylic, substrate through light absorption generated heat. The secondary objective was to determine if the pattern on the silicon wafer could then be transferred to silica (i.e. a microscope glass slide) through light absorption generated heat. Once this pattern-transfer technique is developed for the micro scale, it could be instituted on the nano scale. The experiment was designed to find an alternate method to that currently being used to mass-produce compact discs (CDs). The most popular method employs a stamping process …

Improved Bridge Expansion Joints, Sudhir Palle, Theodore Hopwood Ii, Bobby W. Meade

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has both open and closed bridge expansion joints and associated details that are problematic. Several state highway agencies (SHA) have joints that they believe are superior performers to other types and have prepared guidance documents for their use. A literature search indicated that several previous research studies, including national surveys, addressing SHA joint practices have been conducted over the past 10 years. For up-to-date information, a new set of surveys were developed and distributed to all the SHAs by email through the AASHTO Subcommittee on Maintenance-Bridge Technical Working Group chairman in June 2010. There were …

A System Dynamics Model Of Pharmaceutical Opioids: Medical Use, Diversion, And Nonmedical Use, Teresa Schmidt, Wayne Wakeland, J. David Haddox

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

A dramatic rise in the nonmedical of pharmaceutical opioids has presented the United States with a substantial public health problem. Nonmedical use of prescription pain relievers has become increasingly prevalent in the US over the last two decades, and diversion of medicines obtained by prescription is assumed to be a major source of supply for nonmedical opioid use. Policymakers striving to protect population health by ameliorating the adverse outcomes of nonmedical use of opioid analgesics could benefit from a systems-level model which reflects the complexity of the system and incorporates the full range of available data. To address this need, …

Towards A Unified Definition Of Supply Chain Management, Edward Sweeney Jul 2011

Towards A Unified Definition Of Supply Chain Management, Edward Sweeney

Articles

A wide range of definitions of supply chain management (SCM) have been developed over the last three decades. The philosophy of SCM is based firmly on a recognition that it is only by working in a more integrated manner that competitive advantage can be maximised. However, for this to become a reality the development of common definitions and understandings between supply chain partners is a critical success factor. The corollary of this is that a lack of definitional consistency and a common understanding is an inhibitor to the successful adoption of SCM thinking in practice. This paper reviews a number …

Upmixing From Mono : A Source Separation Approach, Derry Fitzgerald Jul 2011

Upmixing From Mono : A Source Separation Approach, Derry Fitzgerald

Conference papers

We present a system for upmixing mono recordings to stereo through the use of sound source separation techniques. The use of sound source separation has the advantage of allowing sources to be placed at distinct points in the stereo field, resulting in more natural sounding upmixes. The system separates an input signal into a number of sources, which can then be imported into a digital audio workstation for upmixing to stereo. Considerations to be taken into account when upmixing are discussed, and a brief overview of the various sound source separation techniques used in the system are given. The effectiveness …

The effects on both drivers and pedestrians were analyzed. Performance measures for pedestrian analysis include pedestrian compliance and average pedestrian walking speed. Performance measures for the driver analysis include probability of stopping and speed at the stop bar of vehicles during the yellow …

A Reservation-Based Smart Parking System, Hongwei Wang Jul 2011

A Reservation-Based Smart Parking System, Hongwei Wang

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In metropolitan areas, parking management influences drivers search time and cost for parking spaces, parking revenue, and traffic congestion. The wide deployment of wireless parking meters with sensing and communications capabilities allows the parking authority to monitor the state of each parking space in real time and optimize the parking management.

In this thesis, we study state-of-the-art parking policies in smart parking systems, and show that the smart parking system needs to be "smarter". Our design goals of the smart parking systems include: (1) simplify the operations of parking systems, (2) improve drivers' satisfaction, (3) increase parking revenue, and (4) …

Structure And Optical Properties Of Self-Assembled Multicomponent Plasmonic Nanogels, Tao Cong, Satvik N. Wani, Peter Anthony Paynter, Radhakrishna Sureshkumar Jul 2011

Structure And Optical Properties Of Self-Assembled Multicomponent Plasmonic Nanogels, Tao Cong, Satvik N. Wani, Peter Anthony Paynter, Radhakrishna Sureshkumar

Biomedical and Chemical Engineering - All Scholarship

Multicomponent plasmonic nanogels (PNGs) capable of broadband absorption of light in the 400-700 nm wavelength range were synthesized by the self-assembly of metal nanoparticles with wormlike surfactant micelles. Small angle x-ray scattering and rheological experiments suggest that the nanoparticles bridge micelle fragments to aid the formation a stable gel phase with exceptional color uniformity. Their optical absorbance could be robustly tuned by changing the nanoparticle type (Au/Ag), size, shape, and/or concentration. The PNGs have relatively low viscosity and are thermoreversible. Potential applications to the manufacturing of coatings and interfaces for solar energy harvesting and reconfigurable optical devices can be envisioned.

Asymmetric Transfer Of Task Dependent Perceptual Learning In Visual Motion Processing, Sampada Charudatta Wakde Jul 2011

Asymmetric Transfer Of Task Dependent Perceptual Learning In Visual Motion Processing, Sampada Charudatta Wakde

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The effects of perceptual learning (PL) on the sensory representation are not fully understood, especially for higher–level visual mechanisms more directly relevant to behavior. The objective of this research is to elucidate the mechanisms that mediate task dependent learning by determining where and how task dependent learning occurs in the later stages of visual motion processing.

Eighteen subjects were trained to perform a dual–2TAFC visual discrimination task in which they were required to simultaneously detect changes in the direction of moving dots (task–1) and the proportion of red dots (task–2) shown in two stimulus apertures presented in either the left …

Reliability-Based Turbo Detection, Jun Tao, Jingxian Wu, Yahong Rosa Zheng Jul 2011

Reliability-Based Turbo Detection, Jun Tao, Jingxian Wu, Yahong Rosa Zheng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a reliability-Based turbo detection scheme for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with frequency-selective fading. the proposed scheme performs iterative successive soft interference cancellation (SSIC) with a block decision-feedback equalizer (BDFE). to minimize the negative impacts of error propagation in SSIC, we propose a new group-wise reliability-Based ordering scheme, where neighboring symbols that severely interfere with each other are clustered into the same group, and for each group, more "reliable" symbols are detected before less "reliable" ones. the symbol reliability is measured by using the symbol a priori probability, which is a unique byproduct of the turbo detection and …

On The Opening Of A Class Of Fatigue Cracks Due To Thermo-Mechanical Fatigue Testing Of Thermal Barrier Coatings, M. T. Hernandez, D. Cojocaru, M. Bartsch, Anette M. Karlsson

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The evolution of fatigue cracks observed in thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) subjected to an accelerated test scheme is investigated via numerical simulations. The TBC system consists of a NiCoCrAlY bond coat and partially yttria stabilized zirconia top coat with a thermally grown oxide (TGO) between these two coatings. The cracks of interest evolve in the bond coat parallel and near the interface with the TGO during thermo-mechanical fatigue testing. In their final stage, the cracks lead to partial spallation of the TBC. This study focuses on why the cracks open to their characteristic shape. To this end, finite element simulations …

A Simplified Method For Analyzing Factors Contributing To Motorcyclists’ Fatal Injuries In Ohio, Deogratias Eustace, Vamsi Krishna Indupuru

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Engineering Mechanics Faculty Publications

The aim of this paper was to analyze traffic crash data by using a simplified method in determining significant factors that increase the risk of a motorcyclist being fatally injured once involved in a motorcycle crash in Ohio. The concept of overrepresentation, which is similar to relative risk, was used in identifying significant variables associated with the elevated risk of a motorcycle crash resulting into a fatality. The overrepresentation factor (ORF) was calculated for each variable of interest. The ORF offers a simple but powerful procedure of determining whether a certain factor significantly occurs more or less frequently in one …

Identification Of Risk Factors Associated With Motorcycle-Related Fatalities In Ohio, Deogratias Eustace, Vamsi Krishna Indupuru, Peter W. Hovey

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Engineering Mechanics Faculty Publications

Out of the 7,138,476 motorcycles operating on U.S. roads, 346,925 were registered in the state of Ohio in the year 2007. Although motorcycles represent only 2.8% of all registered vehicles in the state of Ohio, motorcycling accounts for more than 13% of Ohio highway traffic fatalities. Since 2005, Ohio has had a distressing distinction of being among the fifteen states that have sustained more than half of all motorcycle fatalities recorded in the USA (NHTSA 2007; NHTSA 2008a). For the past ten years, the overall motorcycle crash fatalities have been increasing while the motor vehicle occupant crash fatalities have been …
