Boundary Element Analysis Of Thin Structural Problems In 2d Elastostatics, Yao-Ming Zhang, Yan Gu, Jeng-Tzong Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Thin structures, such as thin films and coatings, have been widely designed and utilized in many industries recently. However, the widespread experimental research in thin structural problems underlies a general lack of modeling efforts which can accurately and efficiently predict their performance. In this paper, the boundary element method (BEM) based on elasticity theory is developed for two-dimensional (2D) thin structures with the thickness to length ratio in the micro (10-6) or nano (10-9) scales. The BEM-based approach proposed in this paper is constructed using a combination of the regularized indirect boundary integral equations (BIEs) and a general nonlinear transformation …

Analytical Comparison Of Multimicrophone Probes In Measuring Acoustic Intensity, Curtis P. Wiederhold Aug 2011

Analytical Comparison Of Multimicrophone Probes In Measuring Acoustic Intensity, Curtis P. Wiederhold

Theses and Dissertations

In the late 1970s, a method was developed to estimate acoustic intensity in one dimension by taking the cross-spectral density of two closely-spaced microphone signals. Since then, multimicrophone probes have been developed to measure three-dimensional intensity as well as energy density. Their usefulness has led to the design of various types of multimicrophone probes, the most common being the four-microphone orthogonal, the four-microphone regular tetrahedron, and the six-microphone designs. These designs generally either consist of microphones suspended in space near each other or mounted on the surface of a sphere. This work analytically compares the relative merits of each probe …

Relaxation Of Optically Excited Carriers In Graphene, Raseong Kim, Vasili Perebeinos, Phaedon Avouris Aug 2011

Relaxation Of Optically Excited Carriers In Graphene, Raseong Kim, Vasili Perebeinos, Phaedon Avouris

Birck and NCN Publications

We explore the relaxation of photoexcited graphene by solving a transient Boltzmann transport equation with electron-phonon (e-ph) and electron-electron (e-e) scattering. Simulations show that when the excited carriers are relaxed by e-ph scattering only, a population inversion can be achieved at energies determined by the photon energy. However, e-e scattering quickly thermalizes the carrier energy distributions washing out the negative optical conductivity peaks. The relaxation rates and carrier multiplication effects are presented as a function of photon energy, graphene doping, and dielectric constant.

Numerical Simulation Of Ram Extrusion Process For Ceramic Materials, Mingyang Li, Lie Tang, Fei Xue, Robert G. Landers

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The freeze–form extrusion process for aqueous-based ceramic paste is complex due to the non-Newtonian behavior of the paste. In this paper the process is studied numerically using a developed mathematical model. The ceramic paste viscosity is characterized by the Herschel-Bulkley model. The relationship between plunger velocity and extrusion force is computed numerically. The influence of air, which is mixed with the paste during the loading process, is also examined. Due to the compressibility introduced by the trapped air, the plunger force dynamic response is typically dominated by a first order response. It is also shown that the extrusion plunger force …

With the use of synchrotron techniques, we can better understand how crystalline structures behave under extreme conditions. This yields the opportunity to resolve complex crystal structures [1]. Here, we focus on the high pressure crystal structure of Nb5Si3. Refractory metal silicides are an important class of materials as they are used in high temperature applications such as turbines and aerospace modules. As an example, the performance of a jet engine is highly influenced by the maximum internal pressure and temperature possible. Obtaining higher levels of thrust is dependent upon the material's ability to remain structurally sound under extreme temperatures and …

Correlation Between Grain Dislocation Density And Orientation For Naturally Deformed Mantle Xenolith From Jagersfontein Mine, Quinton Guerrero, Quinlan Smith Aug 2011

Correlation Between Grain Dislocation Density And Orientation For Naturally Deformed Mantle Xenolith From Jagersfontein Mine, Quinton Guerrero, Quinlan Smith

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

Determining the reaction of poly-crystalline structures to induced stress is an extremely difficult problem in contemporary engineering and geology. The main challenge lies in the inhomogeneity of the grains inside of the poly-crystalline structures. To predict the response of a certain polycrystalline structure to a specific stress, you must resort to one of two views on grain interaction, an orientation or propagation based model. For every material there may be certain correlations between the prediction model used and the actual deformation that occurred. Our work centers around describing the correlation of these prediction models with a sample of naturally deformed …

Roles Of Particle-Wall And Particle-Particle Interactions In Highly Confined Suspensions Of Spherical Particles Being Sheared At Low Reynolds Numbers, Ashok S. Sangani, Andreas Acrivos, Philippe Peyla Aug 2011

Roles Of Particle-Wall And Particle-Particle Interactions In Highly Confined Suspensions Of Spherical Particles Being Sheared At Low Reynolds Numbers, Ashok S. Sangani, Andreas Acrivos, Philippe Peyla

Biomedical and Chemical Engineering - All Scholarship

The roles of particle-wall and particle-particle interactions are examined for suspensions of spherical particles in a viscous fluid being confined and sheared at low Reynolds numbers by two parallel walls moving with equal but opposite velocities. Both particle-wall and particle-particle interactions are shown to decrease the rotational velocity of the spheres, so that in the limit of vanishingly small gaps between the spheres and the walls, the spheres acquire a rotational slip relative to the walls. The presence of the walls also increases the particle stresslet and, therefore, the total viscous dissipation. In the limit of vanishingly small gaps, the …
