The Fourier Spectrum Element Method For Vibration And Power Flow Analysis Of Complex Dynamic Systems, Hongan Xu Jan 2010

The Fourier Spectrum Element Method For Vibration And Power Flow Analysis Of Complex Dynamic Systems, Hongan Xu

Wayne State University Dissertations

A general numerical method, the so-called Fourier-Space Element Method (FSEM), is proposed for the vibration and power flow analyses of complex built-up structures. In a FSEM model, a complex structure is considered as a number of interconnected basic structural elements such as beams and plates. The essence of this method is to invariably express each of displacement functions as an improved Fourier series which consists of a standard Fourier cosine series plus several supplementary series/functions used to ensure and improve the uniform convergence of the series representation. Thus, the series expansions of the displacement functions and their relevant derivatives are …

Imaging The Vasculature With Susceptibility Weighted Imaging: Applications And Analysis, Samuel Barnes Jan 2010

Imaging The Vasculature With Susceptibility Weighted Imaging: Applications And Analysis, Samuel Barnes

Wayne State University Dissertations

Modern magnetic resonance imaging sequences allow detailed non-invasive imaging of both the arteries and veins. This work is divided into four sections that examine different applications and analysis of these sequences.

Susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) typically generates excellent negative venous contrast. Techniques to generate positive arterial contrast in SWI images without degrading the venous contrast with a single echo are examined. By using high isotropic resolution and high readout bandwidth flow losses can be minimized (generating good arterial contrast) even at the long echo times required for good venous contrast. A downsampling filter is then used to restore lost venous …

Robust Observers And Controllers For Marine Surface Vessels Undergoing Maneuvering And Course-Keeping Tasks, Nassim Khaled Jan 2010

Robust Observers And Controllers For Marine Surface Vessels Undergoing Maneuvering And Course-Keeping Tasks, Nassim Khaled

Wayne State University Dissertations

The dynamic behavior of marine surface vessels is highly nonlinear. Moreover, it is significantly influenced by environmental disturbances induced by winds, random sea waves and currents. To yield a desired response of the ship, the guidance and control system of the ship should be robust to both modeling imprecision and significant environmental disturbances.

The focus of the current work is threefold. First, a six degree-of-freedom nonlinear model for a marine surface vessel is developed. It accounts for the coriolis and centripetal acceleration terms, added mass and wave damping terms, wave excitation forces, so-called "memory" effect terms, nonlinear restoring forces, wind …

Effects Of The Antimicrobial Tylosin On The Microbial Community Structure Of An Anaerobic Sequencing Batch Reactor, Toshio Shimada, Xu Li, Julie L. Zilles, Eberhard Morgenroth, Lutgarde Raskin

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

The effects of the antimicrobial tylosin on a methanogenic microbial community were studied in a glucosefed laboratory-scale anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR) exposed to stepwise increases of tylosin (0, 1.67, and 167 mg/L). The microbial community structure was determined using quantitative fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and phylogenetic analyses of bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene clone libraries of biomass samples. During the periods without tylosin addition and with an influent tylosin concentration of 1.67 mg/L, 16S rRNA gene sequences related to Syntrophobacter were detected and the relative abundance of Methanosaeta species was high. During the highest tylosin dose of …

Using Bayesian Inference In Design Applications, Chung Yong Chan Jan 2010

Using Bayesian Inference In Design Applications, Chung Yong Chan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents a new approach for solving engineering design problems such as the design of antenna arrays and finite impulse response (FIR) filters. In this approach, a design problem is cast as an inverse problem. The tools and methods previously developed for Bayesian inference are adapted and utilized to solve design problems. Given a desired design output, Bayesian parameter estimation and model comparison are employed to produce designs that meet the prescribed design specifications and requirements. In the Bayesian inference framework, the solution to a design problem is the posterior distribution, which is proportional to the product of the …

Nonlinear Circuit Analysis Via Perturbation Methods And Hardware Prototyping, Kofi Odame, P. E. Hasler

Dartmouth Scholarship

Nonlinear signal processing is necessary in many emerging applications where form factor and power are at a premium. In order to make such complex computation feasible under these constraints, it is necessary to implement the signal processors as analog circuits. Since analog circuit design is largely based on a linear systems perspective, new tools are being introduced to circuit designers that allow them to understand and exploit circuit nonlinearity for useful processing. This paper discusses two such tools, which represent nonlinear circuit behavior in a graphical way, making it easy to develop a qualitative appreciation for the circuits under study.

Automated Pavement Condition Data Collection Quality Control, Quality Assurance, And Reliability, Ghim Ping (Raymond) Ong, Samy Noureldin, Kumares C. Sinha

JTRP Technical Reports

In recent years, state highway agencies have come to understand the need for high quality pavement condition data at both the project and network levels. At the same time, agencies also realize that they have become too dependent on contractors to ensure the quality of the delivered data without any means to independently assure the quality of these delivered data. This research study therefore aims to investigate the inherent variability of the automated data collection processes and proposes guidelines for an automated data collection quality management program in Indiana. In particular, pavement roughness data (in terms of IRI) and pavement …

Effects Of A Mass Layer With Gradually Varying Thickness On A Quartz Crystal Microbalance, Nan Liu, Jiashi Yang, Weiqiu Chen Jan 2010

Effects Of A Mass Layer With Gradually Varying Thickness On A Quartz Crystal Microbalance, Nan Liu, Jiashi Yang, Weiqiu Chen

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

We study the effects of the nonuniform thickness of a thin mass layer on a quartz crystal microbalance. A theoretical analysis is performed on thickness-shear vibration of an AT-cut quartz plate with a nonuniform mass layer. Mindlin’s two-dimensional equation for thickness-shear vibration of a quartz plate is used. Free vibration frequencies and modes are obtained. The effects of the mass layer nonuniformity are examined. It is shown that resonant frequencies and energy trapping of thickness-shear modes are sensitive to mass layer nonuniformity.

Cognitive effort is a concept of unquestionable utility in understanding human behaviour. However, cognitive effort has been defined in several ways in literature and in everyday life, suffering from a partial understanding. It is common to say “Pay more attention in studying that subject” or “How much effort did you spend in resolving that task?”, but what does it really mean? This contribution tries to clarify the concept of cognitive effort, by introducing its main influencing factors and by presenting a formalism which provides us with a tool for precise discussion. The formalism is implementable as a computational concept and …

A Variational Approach To Non-Newtonian Flow In Angular Pores: An Application To Enchanced Oil Recovery, Nithin Kavoori

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

With an alarming rise in carbon dioxide (CO2) emission from anthropogenic sources, CO2 sequestration has become an attractive choice to mitigate the emission. Some popular storage media for CO2 are oil reservoirs, deep coal-bed, deep oceanic-beds. These have been used for the long term CO2 storage. Due to special lowering viscosity and surface tension property of CO2, it has been widely used for enhanced oil recovery. The sites for CO2 sequestration or enhanced oil recovery mostly consist of porous rocks. In this thesis work, I focus on understanding the flow through porous at pore-level using variational approach.

Variational approach is …

Real-Time Model Predictive Control Of Quasi-Keyhole Pipe Welding, Kun Qian

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Quasi-keyhole, including plasma keyhole and double-sided welding, is a novel approach proposed to operate the keyhole arc welding process. It can result in a high quality weld, but also raise higher demand of the operator. A computer control system to detect the keyhole and control the arc current can improve the performance of the welding process. To this effect, developing automatic pipe welding, instead of manual welding, is a hot research topic in the welding field.

The objective of this research is to design an automatic quasi-keyhole pipe welding system that can monitor the keyhole and control its establishment time …

Advancements In Transmission Line Fault Location, Ning Kang Jan 2010

Advancements In Transmission Line Fault Location, Ning Kang

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

In modern power transmission systems, the double-circuit line structure is increasingly adopted. However, due to the mutual coupling between the parallel lines it is quite challenging to design accurate fault location algorithms. Moreover, the widely used series compensator and its protective device introduce harmonics and non-linearities to the transmission lines, which make fault location more difficult. To tackle these problems, this dissertation is committed to developing advanced fault location methods for double-circuit and series-compensated transmission lines.

Algorithms utilizing sparse measurements for pinpointing the location of short-circuit faults on double-circuit lines are proposed. By decomposing the original network into three sequence …

Extraction And Prediction Of System Properties Using Variable-N-Gram Modeling And Compressive Hashing, Muthulakshmi Muthukumarasamy Jan 2010

Extraction And Prediction Of System Properties Using Variable-N-Gram Modeling And Compressive Hashing, Muthulakshmi Muthukumarasamy

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

In modern computer systems, memory accesses and power management are the two major performance limiting factors. Accesses to main memory are very slow when compared to operations within a processor chip. Hardware write buffers, caches, out-of-order execution, and prefetch logic, are commonly used to reduce the time spent waiting for main memory accesses. Compiler loop interchange and data layout transformations also can help. Unfortunately, large data structures often have access patterns for which none of the standard approaches are useful. Using smaller data structures can significantly improve performance by allowing the data to reside in higher levels of the memory …

Computational Study Of Direct Fuel Injection In The Rotax 914 Engine, Brad Pollock

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Direct injection spark ignition (DISI) is a fuel delivery method in which the fuel is introduced directly into the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine. Although direct fuel injection was first pioneered in the early 1920's, it has only recently become a reliable option due to advances made in control systems and injection technology. Direct injection enables increased fuel efficiency and higher power output than a conventional Port Fuel Injection (PFI) system. By delivering pressurized fuel directly into the cylinder, the degree of fuel atomization and the fuel vaporization rate are increased. Hence, the air/fuel mixture can be more …

Design And Evaluation Of An Audio-Frequency Transresistance Amplifier For Magnetic Tape Playback, Thomas R. Salvatierra Jan 2010

Design And Evaluation Of An Audio-Frequency Transresistance Amplifier For Magnetic Tape Playback, Thomas R. Salvatierra

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Analog magnetic tape remains a medium of choice for high-fidelity sound recording and reproduction. Some of this fidelity is sacrificed during the tape playback process; an optimized playback preamplifier is therefore critical to the performance of the medium. Existing playback methods integrate the voltage generated across the reproduce head to obtain a signal directly proportional to the remanent magnetic flux of the tape. An alternate playback method proposes the use of a transresistance amplifier to convert flux-proportional reproduce head current directly to voltage. This eliminates the need for voltage integration and minimizes the amount of equalization performed upon playback. Circuit …
