Throughout the years, transportation organizations and agencies have been unable to keep up with increasing demand for roadway facilities. Similarly, traditional public-sector funding such as motor fuel taxes is falling short in meeting the growing demand for new transportation infrastructure. With deficit financing and congestion problems common to many highways throughout the United States, DOTs are turning to tolling the roadway facilities as a means of financing transportation improvements for inter-urban and urban facilities. In turn, in order for managed facilities such as toll roads or managed lanes to be attractive and viable for the potential investors, the facilities must be …
Environmentally-Conscious Supply Chain Design In Support Of Food Security, Caroline C. Krejci, Benita M. Beamon
Environmentally-Conscious Supply Chain Design In Support Of Food Security, Caroline C. Krejci, Benita M. Beamon
Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive
This paper seeks to design food supply chain structures that can provide food security for every person in the world while supporting long-term environmental sustainability. In particular, we provide alternatives to the current food supply chain structure and analyze their potential for providing food security, in terms of productive capacity and long-term environmental sustainability. Given the current world population and expected continued growth, our analysis suggests that environmentally-sustainable food supply chains would be most effectively supported by local and organic agriculture, while maintaining a parallel industrial agricultural system. This hybrid system would adopt environmentally-sustainable principles whenever possible, seeking to increase …
Applying Transportation Forecasting To The Atlanta Area Public Transportation System, Aaron L. Taylor
Applying Transportation Forecasting To The Atlanta Area Public Transportation System, Aaron L. Taylor
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis, we examine the implementation of volume delay functions to the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transportation Authority (MARTA) system. Volume delay functions are n differentiable functions used to estimate the long-term distribution of user traffic on transportation systems. We will demonstrate the graphical behavior of these functions as well as explain the constraints for these functions. These tasks will be completed by developing a simplistic yet unrealistic model, demonstrate how the integral is used to estimate the total sum of this model, and then introduce the two functions which will be used in the analysis. The final task of …

Posture Systematically Alters Ear-Canal Reflectance And Dpoae Properties, Susan E. Voss, Modupe F. Adegoke, Nicholas J. Horton, Kevin N. Sheth, Jonathan Rosand, Christopher A. Shera
Engineering: Faculty Publications
Several studies have demonstrated that the auditory system is sensitive to changes in posture, presumably through changes in intracranial pressure (ICP) that in turn alter the intracochlear pressure, which affects the stiffness of the middle-ear system. This observation has led to efforts to develop an ear-canal based noninvasive diagnostic measure for monitoring ICP, which is currently monitored invasively via access through the skull or spine. Here, we demonstrate the effects of postural changes, and presumably ICP changes, on distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) magnitude, DPOAE angle, and power reflectance. Measurements were made on 12 normal-hearing subjects in two postural positions: …
An Empirical Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Jml Assertions As Test Oracles, Kavir Shrestha
An Empirical Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Jml Assertions As Test Oracles, Kavir Shrestha
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Test oracles remain one of the least understood aspects of the modern testing process. An oracle is a mechanism used by software testers and software engineers for determining whether a test has passed or failed. One widely-supported approach to oracles is the use of runtime assertion checking during the testing activity. Method invariants,pre- and postconditions help detect bugs during runtime. While assertions are supported by virtually all programming environments, are used widely in practice, and are often assumed to be effective as test oracles, there are few empirical studies of their efficacy in this role. In this thesis, we present …
Initial Expansion Of The Columbia River Tidal Plume: Theory And Remote Sensing Observations, David A. Jay, Edward D. Zaron, Jiayi Pan
Initial Expansion Of The Columbia River Tidal Plume: Theory And Remote Sensing Observations, David A. Jay, Edward D. Zaron, Jiayi Pan
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Analysis of the Columbia River tidal plume using Lagrangian frontal equations provides a concise description of the evolution of frontal depth H, velocity U, reduced gravity g', and frontal internal Froude number F (sub R) . Because the estuary mouth is narrow, the initial radial plume motion is supercritical (F (sub R) > 1) for up to 12 hours. Understanding this supercritical phase is vital, because plume properties change rapidly, with strong ecosystem impacts. To analyze this expansion, analytical and numerical models (the latter with three mixing formulations) were tested. Model results are compared to synthetic aperture radar images to verify …
When Discrete Meets Differential: Assessing The Stability Of Structure From Small Motion, Wen-Yan Lin, Geok-Choo Tan, Loong-Fah Cheong
When Discrete Meets Differential: Assessing The Stability Of Structure From Small Motion, Wen-Yan Lin, Geok-Choo Tan, Loong-Fah Cheong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We provide a theoretical proof showing that under a proportional noise model, the discrete eight point algorithm behaves similarly to the differential eight point algorithm when the motion is small. This implies that the discrete algorithm can handle arbitrarily small motion for a general scene, as long as the noise decreases proportionally with the amount of image motion and the proportionality constant is small enough. This stability result extends to all normalized variants of the eight point algorithm. Using simulations, we show that given arbitrarily small motions and proportional noise regime, the normalized eight point algorithms outperform their differential counterparts …
The Influence Of Hydrogen Peroxide On The Static And Fatigue Properties Of Palacos-R Bone Cement, John M. Guerin
The Influence Of Hydrogen Peroxide On The Static And Fatigue Properties Of Palacos-R Bone Cement, John M. Guerin
Theses
Aseptic loosening is a very costly complication of joint arthroplasty, both in terms of patient quality of life and financially. One potential contributing factor in its development - namely the use of hydrogen peroxide as an effervescent haemostatic agent - was investigated in this study. Clean bone cement samples and samples contaminated with 6% hydrogen peroxide were manufactured and stored either in room air or normal saline prior to testing. Thus four sample types were tested (clean stored wet or dry and contaminated stored wet or dry). Static (tension to failure) and fatigue testing was performed. Analysis was carried out …
Enhanced Pervaporation Using A Novel Pump Configuration, Donough Patrick Shanahan
Enhanced Pervaporation Using A Novel Pump Configuration, Donough Patrick Shanahan
Theses
The pervaporation process is investigated in this work under the guises of process design improvements and process performance. Several avenues of research were investigated.
The main aim of the project was to investigate the use of liquid ring vacuum pumps for permeate recovery at laboratory and industrial scales. Due to technical and economical issues, these pumps were deemed unsuitable. This analysis then had to be extended further. Previous work investigated the use of dry vacuum pump systems on a lab scale and this work was extended to industrial scale simulations. Results from the lab scale process particularly those relating to …
Composition-Structure-Property Relationships In Multicomponent Bioactive Glasses, Sharon Murphy
Composition-Structure-Property Relationships In Multicomponent Bioactive Glasses, Sharon Murphy
Theses
Silicate glasses function effectively as bone grafts by stimulating bone regeneration through gene activation. However these materials offer little therapeutic potential for the regeneration of healthy bone in those suffering from metabolic bone diseases such as osteoporosis. Examining the composition-structure-property relationships arising from the incorporation of therapeutic ions such as strontium (Sr) and zinc (Zn) into such glasses in order to allow for healthy bone regeneration and antibacterial efficacy, as well as sodium (Na) to allow for controlled ion release was the objective of this work. Eight calcium-strontium-sodium-zinc-silicate glass compositions were produced, based on incremental additions of Sr and Na. …
Safety Data Dissemination Framework For Vehicular Networks, Martin Koubek
Safety Data Dissemination Framework For Vehicular Networks, Martin Koubek
Theses
An effective transportation system is essential to modern societies with transportation having a significant influence on economic growth, social development and the environment. But this dependence on road mobility has had serious consequences in terms of rising crash costs that include deaths, injuries, lost productivity, material damage and congestion. The European Union and many other governments worldwide support active safety as being the next logical step in diminishing crash costs after passive safety (safety belt, ABS etc.) where drivers will be warned prior to reaching hazardous situations enabling them to react appropriately. While improving road safety is unanimously considered the …
Water And Nutrient Balances Of Vegetative Treatment Systems For Feedlots In South Dakota, Daniel T. Ostrem
Water And Nutrient Balances Of Vegetative Treatment Systems For Feedlots In South Dakota, Daniel T. Ostrem
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Vegetative treatment systems (VTS) are a possible alternative to storage basins for managing feedlot runoff but have not been researched in South Dakota. This study was conducted to evaluate the performance of VTS within South Dakota. The performance was evaluated by determining water and mass balances on each vegetative treatment area (VTA). The balances were determined by measuring all inflow, outflow, evapotranspiration, precipitation, and both soil and water nutrient concentrations within the VTA. Twelve site years have been completed in researching VTS from four feed lots in South Dakota. Seven of the twelve site-years VTS were able to prevent water …

Zero-Sum Two-Player Game Theoretic Formulation Of Affine Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems Using Neural Networks, S. Mehraeen, T. Dierks, S. Jagannathan, M. L. Crow
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, the nearly optimal solution for discrete-time (DT) affine nonlinear control systems in the presence of partially unknown internal system dynamics and disturbances is considered. the approach is based on successive approximate solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Isaacs (HJI) equation, which appears in optimal control. Successive approximation approach for updating control input and disturbance for DT nonlinear affine systems are proposed. Moreover, sufficient conditions for the convergence of the approximate HJI solution to the saddle-point are derived, and an iterative approach to approximate the HJI equation using a neural network (NN) is presented. Then, the requirement of full knowledge of …

Time-Domain Field Responses Of The Thin, High-Contrast, Finely Layered Structure In Ic Packagings, Adrianus T. De Hoop, Lijun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The thin, high-contrast, fine layers with dielectric and conductive properties, such as ground planes, are feature structures in IC packagings. Their responses to the pulsed electromagnetic field is important both theoretically and practically. In this paper, a new semi-analytical method is proposed to model the interaction of the layer with an incident electromagnetic field via a boundary condition that expresses the in-plane conduction and contrast electric polarization currents in terms of the exciting incident field by relating the jump in the tangential component of the magnetic field strength across the layer in terms of the (continuous) tangential component of the …
A Novel Emulator For Discrete-Time Mimo Triply Selective Fading Channels, Fei Ren, Yahong Rosa Zheng
A Novel Emulator For Discrete-Time Mimo Triply Selective Fading Channels, Fei Ren, Yahong Rosa Zheng
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Hardware implementation of discrete-time triply selective Rayleigh fading channel emulators is proposed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications. the proposed work differs from existing ones in that it incorporates temporal correlation, intertap correlation, and spatial correlation matrices into multiple uncorrelated frequency-flat fading waveforms to obtain a triply selective fading channel. the flat fading waveforms with temporal correlation or Doppler spectrum are generated using a sum-of-sinusoid method. the intertap correlation matrix associated with multipath delay spread is computed according to the channel power delay profile and transmit/receive filters. the spatial correlation matrices are predefined inputs associated with transmit and receive antenna arrangements. …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Vertebroplasty (VP) and balloon kyphoplasty (BKP) are now widely used for treating patients in whom the pain due to vertebral compression fractures is severe and has proved to be refractory to conservative treatment. These procedures involve percutaneous delivery of a bolus of an injectable bone cement either directly to the fractured vertebral body, VB (VP) or to a void created in it by an inflatable bone tamp (BKP). Thus, the cement is a vital component of both procedures. In the vast majority of VPs and BKPs, a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement is used. This material has many shortcomings, notably …

Measurement Sensitivity In Tapping-Mode Atomic Force Microscopy Using A Bi-Harmonic Drive Signal, Santosh R. Kodandarama, Douglas A. Bristow
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In tapping mode atomic force microscopy, surface features are measured indirectly via the amplitude of the tapping cantilever. a change in surface profile is detectable only if it results in an amplitude change that is significant enough to be measured by the optics. Previous works have focused on improving sensitivity through the system's Q-factor, either by changing physical cantilever properties or using feedback control, but those approaches undesirably slow down the dynamic response. in this work we take a novel approach to sensitivity amplification by reshaping the tapping trajectory. by shaping the trajectory so that the probe spends a greater …
Guidance And Control For Chase Uav Via Sliding Mode Approach, Takeshi Yamasaki, S. N. Balakrishnan
Guidance And Control For Chase Uav Via Sliding Mode Approach, Takeshi Yamasaki, S. N. Balakrishnan
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study focuses on integrated guidance and control for a chasing UAV against a maneuvering target. a sliding mode approach is selected to develop the integrated guidance and control using a full model of nonlinear, rigid body, 6 Degree-Of-Freedom equations of motion including nonlinear aerodynamics for the target-following capability and maneuverability enhancement against uncertain target maneuvers. Intermediate control variables for the integrated guidance and control system are carefully selected and approximated time derivatives of a sliding surface are applied such that a sliding surface structure is simple and sufficient to propagate the actuator input to the sliding surface in order …

A Variable Step-Size Normalized Sign Algorithm For Acoustic Echo Cancelation, Tiange Shao, Yahong Rosa Zheng, Jacob Benesty
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A variable step size normalized sign algorithm (VSS-NSA) is proposed, for acoustic echo cancelation, which adjusts its step size automatically by matching the L1 norm of the a posteriori error to that of the background noise plus near-end signal. Simulation results show that the new algorithm combined with double-talk detection outperforms the dual sign algorithm (DSA) and the normalized triple-state sign algorithm (NTSSA) in terms of convergence rate and stability. ©2010 IEEE.

Mahalanobis Taguchi System (Mts) As A Prognostics Tool For Rolling Element Bearing Failures, Ahmet Soylemezoglu, Sarangapani Jagannathan, Can Saygin
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, a novel Mahalanobis-Taguchi system (MTS)-Based fault detection, isolation, and prognostics scheme is presented. the proposed data-driven scheme utilizes the Mahalanobis distance (MD)-Based fault clustering and the progression of MD values over time. MD thresholds derived from the clustering analysis are used for fault detection and isolation. When a fault is detected, the prognostics scheme, which monitors the progression of the MD values, is initiated. Then, using a linear approximation, time to failure is estimated. the performance of the scheme has been validated via experiments performed on rolling element bearings inside the spindle headstock of a microcomputer numerical …

Control Force Estimation In Seismic Building Design, Xiaozhe Zhang, Franklin Y. Cheng
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents two approaches of estimating the control force magnitude in the building structure's seismic design. One is by spectrum average in frequency domain, and the other is by nondeterministic Monte Carlo analysis in time domain. the spectrum method is proposed to find the estimation by averaging the system's frequency response with an earthquake spectrum as a weighting factor. the nondeterministic method is based on sets of potential ground motions generated numerically. the approaches are developed in the concept of performance design, with studies based on the site potential seismic hazard and presenting results at different levels of displacement …
Modeling Permanent Deformation Of Unbound Granular Materials Under Repeated Loads, Cheng Chen, Louis Ge, Jiansheng Zhang
Modeling Permanent Deformation Of Unbound Granular Materials Under Repeated Loads, Cheng Chen, Louis Ge, Jiansheng Zhang
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Finite-element analysis on a pavement structure under traffic loads has been a viable option for researchers and designers in highway pavement design and analysis. Most of the constitutive drivers used were nonlinear elastic models defined by empirical resilient modulus equations. Few isotropic/kinematic hardening elastoplastic models were used but applying thousands of repeated load cycles became computationally expensive. in this paper, a cyclic plasticity model based on fuzzy plasticity theory is presented to model the long-term behavior of unbound granular materials under repeated loads. the discussion focuses on the model parameters that control long-term behavior such as elastic shakedown. the performance …

Finite Element Modeling Of A Field-Scale Shored Mechanically Stabilized Earth Wall, Cheng Chen, Louis Ge, Jia Sheng Zhang
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The shored mechanically stabilized earth (SMSE) walls are typically used in steep terrain to allow construction of a new road or widening of an existing narrow-road by constructing the wall on the outboard of the roadway. the state-of-practice suggests a minimum bench width and MSE reinforcement length equivalent to seventy percent of the design height of the MSE wall. It has been shown recently that shorter reinforcement length is sufficient when the SMSE wall system is constructed, and the retaining benefits provided by the shoring component should be taken into consideration. in this paper, a finite element analysis is performed …

The spatial sampling rate of an imaging system is determined by the spacing of the detectors in the focal plane array (FPA). The spatial frequencies present in the image on the focal plane are band-limited by the optics. This is due to diffraction through a finite aperture. To guarantee that there will be no aliasing during image acquisiton, the Nyquist criterion dictates that the sampling rate must be greater than twice the cut-off frequency of the optics. However, optical designs involve a number of trade-offs and typical imaging systems are designed with some level of aliasing. We will refer to …

Background: Significant progress has been made towards the clinical application of human-machine interfaces (HMIs) based on electromyographic (EMG) pattern recognition for various rehabilitation purposes. Making this technology practical and available to patients with motor deficits requires overcoming real-world challenges, such as physical and physiological changes, that result in variations in EMG signals and systems that are unreliable for long-term use. In this study, we aimed to address these challenges by (1) investigating the stability of time-domain EMG features during changes in the EMG signals and (2) identifying the feature sets that would provide the most robust EMG pattern recognition.

Studies Of Hydrophobic Organic Pollutant Interactions With Cyclodextrin: Implication For Groundwater Remediation, Heng Gao
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Henry’s Law constants of several common, subsurface hydrophobic organic pollutants (HOPs) including trichloroethylene (TCE), perchloroethylene (PCE) and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and o-xylene (BTEX), were measured over a range of temperatures (35, 45, 55 and 65°C) and cyclodextrin (CD) concentrations (0, 10, 20, 50 and 100 g L-1). In aqueous CD solutions, Henry’s constant values decrease by a power law relationship with increasing CD concentration due to an apparent solubility enhancement caused by HOP partitioning to the hydrophobic cavity of CD molecules. The temperature dependence of air-water partitioning under the influence of CD was well described by the van’t Hoff equation …
