Smore Phase 2: An Upgrade In Valve Systems & Startup Procedure For A Small Methanol Oxygen Liquid Rocket Engine, Christian Soria

Aerospace Engineering

A Methanol-Oxygen liquid rocket engine was designed and manufactured under the California Polytechnic State University Aerospace Department by students in a graduate level rocket propulsion class. The SMORE, previously known as the KORE, is now in an ongoing testing and developing stage with plans to incorporate it into the aerospace undergraduate propulsion lab. Phase 2 of the liquid rocket engine development is to produce a start-up procedure that will improve the safety due to manual operation and poor ignition conditions. A propane ignition system along with the implementation of electrically operated solenoid valves to control the fuels and oxidizer were …

Gerber Project For Lockheed Martin, Andrew Callahan, Sean Lawyer Mar 2010

Gerber Project For Lockheed Martin, Andrew Callahan, Sean Lawyer

Industrial Technology and Packaging

Lockheed Martin, the world’s premier aerial combat vehicle manufacturer was pressed to find an eco-friendly way to package their impregnated epoxy. In the current system, the epoxy would be cut on the Gerber table to a pre-determined length and then sandwiched inside of two corrugated fiberboard sheets for storage inside of a freezer. The current process was not only labor intensive, but the corrugated fiberboard had to be disregarded after one use. In conjunction with the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Packaging program and Melmat Incorporated, we were able to find a corrugated plastic substrate to replace the currently non-reusable …

Feasibility Study Of Bamboo Drumsticks, Edward Chow Mar 2010

Feasibility Study Of Bamboo Drumsticks, Edward Chow

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

This project is a study on the feasibility of introducing bamboo as an alternative material for the application of drumsticks. The American drumstick industry has been historically very stable and robust due to its commitment to high quality. This high quality comes at the price of large amounts of waste that is largely burned to provide facility heating. With the recent push for corporate responsibility of the total life cycle of their products and the push for increased sustainability, bamboo was considered as a viable resource as a partial alternative or complete replacement. Prototypes of the bamboo drumsticks were fabricated …

Effects Of Crystallographic Orientation On The Early Stages Of Oxidation In Nickel And Chromium, Louis P. Bonfrisco, Megan Frary Mar 2010

Effects Of Crystallographic Orientation On The Early Stages Of Oxidation In Nickel And Chromium, Louis P. Bonfrisco, Megan Frary

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Surface orientation plays an important role in the oxidation behavior of single crystals where studies have found the relative oxidation rates for surfaces with different orientations. However, most materials are polycrystalline and contain myriad orientations that contribute to the overall oxidation process. Here we determine the effects of orientation on the early stages of oxidation behavior as a function of surface orientation for polycrystalline nickel (face-centered cubic) and chromium (body-centered cubic). After high temperature oxidation, the oxide topography is characterized using optical profilometry and the underlying microstructure is characterized with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). By correlating results from EBSD and …

Quality Control Of Soil Water Data In Acis – A Case Study In Nebraska, Jinshing You, Kenneth G. Hubbard, Rezaul Mahmood, Venkataramana Srihar, Dennis Todey

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Soil moisture is the key state variable from both climate and hydrologic cycle assessment perspectives. Automated measurements of soil moisture were not possible in the past decades. Sensors deployed in the field with real-time monitoring networks such as the Automated Weather Data Network (AWDN) in Nebraska have not only become affordable but enhanced the monitoring capability of the network with valuable soil moisture data added to the existing stream of hourly and daily weather data for precipitation, air temperature, humidity, solar radiation, wind speed, and soil temperature. However, to assure the quality of the data, quality control (QC) tools are …

Gusto: An Automatic Generation And Optimization Tool For Matrix Inversion Architectures, Ali Irturk, Bridget Benson, Shahnam Mirzaei, Ryan Kastner

Electrical Engineering

Matrix inversion is a common function found in many algorithms used in wireless communication systems. As FPGAs become an increasingly attractive platform for wireless communication, it is important to understand the trade-offs in designing a matrix inversion core on an FPGA. This article describes a matrix inversion core generator tool, GUSTO, that we developed to ease the design space exploration across different matrix inversion architectures. GUSTO is the first tool of its kind to provide automatic generation of a variety of general-purpose matrix inversion architectures with different parameterization options. GUSTO also provides an optimized applicationspecific architecture with an average of …

Peak Stir Zone Temperatures During Friction Stir Processing, Sprinivasan Swaminathan, Keiichiro Oh-Ishi, Alexander P. Zhilyaev, Christian B. Fuller, Blair London, Murray W. Mahoney, Terry R. Mcnelly

Materials Engineering

The stir zone (SZ) temperature cycle was measured during the friction stir processing (FSP) of NiAl bronze plates. The FSP was conducted using a tool design with a smooth concave shoulder and a 12.7-mm step-spiral pin. Temperature sensing was accomplished using sheathed thermocouples embedded in the tool path within the plates, while simultaneous optical pyrometry measurements of surface temperatures were also obtained. Peak SZ temperatures were 990 ⁰Cto 1015 ⁰C (0.90 to 0.97 TMelt) and were not affected by preheating to 400⁰C, although the dwell time above 900 ⁰C was increased by the preheating. Thermocouple data suggested little variation in …

Rebuilding After Disaster - Engineering Lessons From The 2004 Tsunami, Liam Mccarton Mar 2010

Rebuilding After Disaster - Engineering Lessons From The 2004 Tsunami, Liam Mccarton

Articles

On 26th December 2004 a magnitude 9 earthquake occurred off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The sudden and violent vertical displacement of the sea floor caused a disturbance to the overlying water column, which generated waves (tsunami) that propagated rapidly across the whole of the Indian Ocean. Typically, in open ocean waters, these waves have long wavelengths of the order of 200km and low trough to crest amplitudes. These properties allow them to conserve energy as they propagate over large distances. As the waves enter the shallower waters of coastal areas, their amplitude increases dramatically and their velocity …

One-Pot Enzymatic Synthesis Of Deoxy-Thymidine-Diphosphate (Tdp)-2-Deoxy-∝-D-Glucose Using Phosphomannomutase, Yung-Hum Yang, Young Bok (Abraham) Kang, Dae-Hee Kim, Tek-Hyung Lee, Sung-Hee Park, Kwangwon Lee, Dongwon Yoo, Kwang-Kyung Liou, Hee-Chan Lee, Jae-Kyung Sohng, Byung-Gee Kim

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

Production of deoxy-thymidine-diphosphate (TDP)-sugars as substrates of glycosyltransferases, has been one of main hurdles for combinatorial antibiotic biosynthesis, which combines sugar moiety with aglycon of various antibiotics. Here, we report the one-pot enzymatic synthesis of TDP-2-deoxy-glucose employing high efficient TMP kinase (TMK; E.C. 2.7.2.12), acetate kinase (ACK; E.C. 2.7.1.21), and TDP-glucose synthase (TGS; E.C. 2.7.7.24) with phosphomannomutase (PMM; E.C. 5.4.2.8). In this study, replacing phosphoglucomutase (PGM; E.C. 5.4.2) by PMM from Escherichia coli gave four times higher specific activity on 2-deoxy-6-phosphate glucose, suggesting that the activity on 2-deoxy-glucose-6-phosphate was mainly affected by PMM activity, not PGM activity. Using an in …

A New Eclipse-Based Jml Compiler Built Using Ast Merging, Amritam Sarcar, Yoonsik Cheon

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The Java Modeling Language (JML) is a formal interface specification language to document the behavior of Java program modules and has been used in many research and industrial projects. However, its inability to support Java 5 features such as generics is reducing its user base significantly. Besides, the JML compiler is on average 8.5 times slower than the javac Java compiler. In this paper, we present a new JML compiler built on the Eclipse Java compiler to support Java 5 features. We used a technique called AST merging to implement coarse-grained incremental compilation. In our experiments we observed a significant …

Approximation Of Average Run Length Of Moving Sum Algorithms Using Multivariate Probabilities, Swarnendu Kar, Kishan Mehrotra, Pramod Varshney

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Among the various procedures used to detect potential changes in a stochastic process the moving sum algorithms are very popular due to their intuitive appeal and good statistical performance. One of the important design parameters of a change detection algorithm is the expected interval between false positives, also known as the average run length (ARL). Computation of the ARL usually involves numerical procedures but in some cases it can be approximated using a series involving multivariate probabilities. In this paper, we present an analysis of this series approach by providing sufficient conditions for convergence and derive an error bound. Using …

Prediction Of Wind Speeds With An Artificial Neural Network, Justin Tracy Mar 2010

Prediction Of Wind Speeds With An Artificial Neural Network, Justin Tracy

Electrical Engineering

This project involved designing and programming an artificial neural network, testing its function, and testing the resulting function against existing wind speed measurement data, in order to determine the ability of an artificial neural network to learn the relationship between measured data and future wind speed. The artificial neural network includes gradient momentum, batch training, incremental training, and a function to test the results of the trained neural network against an additional set of data without back propagation. It was first found that the artificial neural network was able perform unsupervised learning, and learn the model for a XOR gate. …

Three-Dimensional Acceleration Measurement Using Videogrammetry Tracking Data, Jack Leifer, Bryan J. Weems, Sean C. Kienle, Aaron M. Sims

Engineering Faculty Research

In order to evaluate the feasibility of multi-point, non-contact, acceleration measurement, a high-speed, precision videogrammetry system has been assembled from commercially-available components and software. Consisting of three synchronized 640 X 480 pixel monochrome progressive scan CCD cameras each operated at 200 frames per second, this system has the capability to provide surface-wide position-versus-time data that are filtered and twice-differentiated to yield the desired acceleration tracking at multiple points on a moving body. The oscillating motion of targets mounted on the shaft of a modal shaker were tracked, and the accelerations calculated using the videogrammetry data were compared directly to conventional …

Simulation Of Traffic Loading On Highway Bridges, Bernard Enright Mar 2010

Simulation Of Traffic Loading On Highway Bridges, Bernard Enright

Other resources

This work is based on weigh-in-motion measurements for approximately three million trucks obtained from sites in five European countries. Techniques have been developed, supported by photographic evidence, for filtering the measurements to identify and remove unreliable values, and for the classification of extremely heavy vehicles. The collected measurements have been used as the basis for building and calibrating a Monte Carlo simulation model for bridge loading. Two-lane traffic is simulated – either two lanes in the same direction or one lane in each direction. The model allows for vehicles that are both heavier and have more axles than in the …

Birck and NCN Publications

We report on electronic properties of graphene synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on copper then transferred to SiO2/Si. Wafer-scale (up to 4 in.) graphene films have been synthesized, consisting dominantly of monolayer graphene as indicated by spectroscopic Raman mapping. Low temperature transport measurements are performed on microdevices fabricated from such CVD graphene, displaying ambipolar field effect (with on/off ratio similar to 5 and carrier mobilities up to similar to 3000 cm(2)/V s) and "half-integer" quantum Hall effect, a hall-mark of intrinsic electronic properties of monolayer graphene. We also observe weak localization and extract information about phase coherence and scattering …

Note: Thermal Analog To Atomic Force Microscopy Force-Displacement Measurements For Nanoscale Interfacial Contact Resistance, Brian D. Iverson, John Blendell, Suresh Garimella

Birck and NCN Publications

Thermal diffusion measurements on polymethylmethacrylate-coated Si substrates using heated atomic force microscopy tips were performed to determine the contact resistance between an organic thin film and Si. The measurement methodology presented demonstrates how the thermal contrast signal obtained during a force-displacement ramp is used to quantify the resistance to heat transfer through an internal interface. The results also delineate the interrogation thickness beyond which thermal diffusion in the organic thin film is not affected appreciably by the underlying substrate.

A Continuum Plasticity Model That Accounts For Hardening And Size Effects In Thin Films, Abigail Hunter, Hariharanath Kavuri, Marisol Koslowski

PRISM: NNSA Center for Prediction of Reliability, Integrity and Survivability of Microsystems

We conducted three-dimensional finite element simulations of the mechanical response of passivated single crystal copper thin films with a continuum crystal plasticity model. The model introduces the formation of high density dislocation layers close to the substrate and passivation interfaces obtained from dislocation dynamics simulations. These dislocation structures are responsible for an increase in strain hardening as the film thickness decreases. The model predicts an increase in strain hardening as the film thickness decreases in agreement with experimental observation in films with thickness in the range 0.2 to 2μm.
