Computer Simulation To Manage Lean Manufacturing Systems, Ahmed Deif
Computer Simulation To Manage Lean Manufacturing Systems, Ahmed Deif
Industrial Technology and Packaging
There is a difference between a lean manufacturing system and a manufacturing system that just applies lean techniques. This paper addresses the previous statement through using computer simulation to explore the impact of applying just in time lean policy on a traditional inventory based production system. A system dynamics model is introduced to capture the different components of the production system. The inventory dynamics of the modeled system is examined against different production scenarios under stochastic demand. Results showed that in systems that are not fully transferred to lean, adopting lean principles are not always beneficial. The paper suggests some …

Polarized Light Based Scheme To Monitor Column Performance In A Continuous Foam Fractionation Column, Janakiraman N. Swamy, Czarena L. Crofcheck, M.P. Mengüç
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: A polarized light scattering technique was used to monitor the performance of a continuously operated foam fractionation process. The S11 and S12 parameters, elements of the light scattering matrix, combined together (S11+S12) have been correlated with the bubble size and liquid content for the case of a freely draining foam. The performance of a foam fractionation column is known to have a strong dependence on the bubble size distribution and liquid hold up in foam. In this study the enrichment is used as a metric, representative of foam properties and column performance, and correlated to the S11+S12 parameter.

The port choice in the multiple-ports region is one of important issues in the international trade container transportation system. In order to reduce the total transportation cost, it is very important for shipping carriers to choose an optimal port for callings. The aim of this paper is to construct an Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) model for simulating the behaviors of carriers’ port choice and identifying the importance weight of every influential factor influencing carriers’ port choices in the multiple-ports region. Finally, the utilization of this proposed AHP model is demonstrated with a case of five shipping companies. By the AHP …

Investigation Of Creep Threshold Stresses Using In Situ Tem Straining Experiment In An Al-5y2o3-10sic Composite, S. P. Deshmukh, Rajiv S. Mishra, I. M. Robertson
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Creep behavior of metal matrix composites is similar to dispersion strengthen alloys and characterized by the presence of a threshold stress below which the creep rate is negligible. This threshold stress is attributed, at least in dispersion-strengthened alloys, to dislocation particle interactions in which the detachment of the dislocations from the particle is the rate-limiting step. Creep experiments were performed on an Al-5Y2O3-10SiC composite in the temperature range of 473 and 573 K and the nature of the dislocation-particle interaction was determined by performing in situ straining experiments at elevated temperature in a transmission electron microscope. …

The Effects Of The Cross-Sectional Area And Aspect Ratio Of Beams On A Laminar Channel Flow, Hai-Ping Hu, Rong-Hua Yeh
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The study analyzed the fully developed laminar flow in a channel with longitudinal rectangular beams arrayed along the channel width. The governing equations describing the fluid which flows along the direction of the beam length are expressed with double Poisson equations and are solved by eigenfunction-expansion and point-match method. The effects of cross-sectional area and aspect ratio of the beams are investigated. Dimensionless velocity profile, mean velocity, and friction factor multiplied by Reynolds number in the channel are presented for analysis. Initially, a comparison of fRe for a special case is made. It is found that the predicted fRe of …

A Delay-Dependent Approach To Robust Stability For Uncertain Hybrid Bidirectional Associative Memory Neural Networks With Time-Varying Delays, Chien-Yu Lu, Koan-Yuh Chang, Hsun-Heng Tsai, Wen-Jer Chang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper performs a global robust stability analysis of a particular class of hybrid bidirectional associative memory time-varying delayed neural network with norm-bounded timevarying parameter uncertainties. The activation functions are assumed to be globally Lipschitz continuous. Globally delay-dependent robust stability criteria are derived in the form of linear matrix inequalities by introducing relaxation matrices which, when chosen properly, produce a less conservative result. Two numerical examples are given to illustrate the significant improvement obtained in the conservativeness of the delay bound.

Web data extraction systems currently not only extract data on web pages but also need to navigate to the target correctly. Most traditional web data extraction systems extract URLs directly from web pages, and then access next pages using the extracted URLs. This data extraction approach is herein called the URL-oriented data extraction approach in this paper. However, currently, more and more web pages use script functions, such as JavaScript, to access next pages and may hide URLs inside these functions, making it difficult to extract URLs. In order to solve this problem, a new data extraction approach, named the …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In this paper, a theoretical analysis of the effect of surface roughness on the lubrication characteristics of inclined stepped composite bearings with micropolar fluid is examined. A generalized form of surface roughness is mathematically modeled by a stochastic random variable with non-zero mean, variance and skewness. The generalized average Reynolds type equation is derived for the rough inclined stepped composite bearings with micropolar fluid. The closed form expressions are obtained for the fluid film pressure, load carrying capacity, frictional force. These expressions can be utilized to obtain the performance characteristics of four different types of bearing system viz; rough plane …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The developing mixed convection heat transfer in inclined rectangular ducts with wall transpiration effects has been investigated numerically in detail. The three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations and energy equation are solved simultaneously with the vorticity- velocity method. For a given combination of governing parameters wall Reynolds number, Rew, aspect ratio γ, modified Rayleigh number, Ra* , and mixed convection parameter, Ω, the solution is evaluated by a marching technique. The effects of wall transpiration and the inclination angle on the distributions of the bulk fluid temperature, the local averaged friction factor and Nusselt number are emphasized in detail. Both conditions of uniform …

Novel Algorithms For Tracking Multiple Targets, Sheng-Yun Hou, Hsien-Sen Hung, Shun-Hsyung Chang, Jeng-Cheng Liu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In this paper, two novel angle tracking algorithms are proposed for tracking multiple targets using an array of sensors with known locations. First, we present an extended Kalman particle filter (EKPF) which is capable of determining the direction-of-arrival (DOA) angles using a single snapshot of data during the interval between each time step. The proposed EKPF algorithm combines particle filtering with the extended Kalman filter (EKF) in order to prevent sample impoverishment during its resampling process. Next, we present a robust Kalman filter (RKF) tracking algorithm intended to improve tracking success rates of other existing algorithms for the case of …

Strain Analysis Of Vapor Chamber Heat Spreaders, Yu-Hsun Hung, Shung-Wen Kang, Wan-Chun Tsai
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Vapor chamber is a cooling device with phase change phenomena. It not only provides high heat transfer coefficient but also removes hot spot. During working of vapor chamber, the buckle force and vapor pressure could lead to deformation. It is a popular way that pillars are set up to reduce deformation. This paper presents a three-dimensional finite element analysis for the vapor chamber by ANSYS software program. Four pillars with two kinds of designs are built into vapor core in order to avoid deformation of the vapor chamber. The results appear that pillars inside vapor chamber are good to reduce …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The delay-dependent and delay-independent conditions are proposed to guarantee the global exponential stability for uncertain switched neutral system with interval time-varying state delay. New additional nonnegative inequalities are introduced to improve the conservativeness of system. Razumikhinlike approach is used to prove the exponential stability for system. Structured and unstructured uncertainties are investigated in this paper. The solving schemes based on Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) approach along with the selective examples are presented to demonstrate the improvements achieved.

Estimation Of Manning Roughness Coefficients On Precast Ecological Concrete Blocks, Te-Hsing Chang, Shen-Ting Huang, Shinne Chen, Jun-Cheng Lai
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Agricultural irrigation and drainage canals in Taiwan are generally constructed using concrete. Concrete is used for the safety of conveyance efficiency. It also reduced loss and is structurally safe. The irrigation ditches and soil revetments in Taiwan fitted with a strong concrete lining. The smooth nonporous concrete surface makes the biology perch difficult and causes a monotonous flow. For these reason, an artificial materials-precast ecological concrete blocks (PECBs) was developed in this research. This was done in order to modify both the traditional concrete lining and the natural field materials in canal construction. Precast ecological concrete blocks (PECBs) were tested …
Siding Attachment To Cold-Formed Steel Walls Through Varying Layers Of Foam Insulation, Newport Ventures, Inc., Applied Residential Engineering Services
Siding Attachment To Cold-Formed Steel Walls Through Varying Layers Of Foam Insulation, Newport Ventures, Inc., Applied Residential Engineering Services
CCFSS Library (1939 - present)
When insulating an exterior wall, more and more codes are requiring continuous insulation on the exterior of the studs to reduce the effect of thermal bridging. As energy codes continue to become more stringent, the thickness of the continuous installation has increased. Although wood and steel are both impacted, the requirements generally are higher for steel framing.
A significant implementation challenge caused by increasingly higher levels of continuous insulation is the lack of specifications for the type of fastener and siding installation details that should be used when installing thicker levels of insulation. Thus, the engineer, architect, builder, and contractor …

Calls for educational reform emphasize the need for student-centered learning approaches that foster lifelong learning. To be a lifelong learner includes characteristics consistent with those of self-directed learners, such as being curious, motivated, reflective, analytical, persistent, flexible, and independent. Educational research has shown that the building of these aptitudes involves a complex interplay among nearly every aspect of human development. Instructor support of students’ self-directed learning (SDL) development relies on understanding and balancing these factors in the classroom. Engineering educators play a critical role in influencing outcomes related to SDL through their design of courses that support students’ transitions from …

Buildings are responsible for over half the energy use in this country. Building energy use can be reduced by a few actions and one is energy conservation. This can be accomplished by knowing what the building energy use is currently and even better is what the energy use is going to be tomorrow, or next month, or even next year. By use of building energy models this will help monitor performance to ensure buildings are operating at peak performance and yield non-HVAC energy use. There has been many studies in this area and one of the many that have been …

A magnetron is a vacuum device that uses the interaction of electrons and an electric field to generate microwaves. Magnetrons are often used for radar systems. Current magnetrons create electrons by heating a tungsten wire to the point that it emits electrons. These systems waste large amounts of energy and are difficult to control. A shielded cold cathode magnetron is a new magnetron design that has the potential to greatly improve the magnetron’s efficiency. These new magnetrons utilize arrays of gated field emitters to inject the electrons into the electric field. These field emitters must be protected from electron bombardment …
