Microzonation Study Of Duzce, Turkey, Dimitra Manou, Maria Manakou, Maria Alexoudi, Anastasios Anastasiadis, Kyriazis Pitilakis

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Duzce in Turkey was severely damaged during the November 12th, 1999 earthquake (Mw 7.2). The paper presents different surveys and studies performed after the earthquake, which resulted in the microzonation study of the city. At first we collected and analyzed all available geophysical and geological data. Then we performed a well focused geophysical and geotechnical campaign comprising a sufficient number of shallow and deep boreholes, seismic down-hole tests, array measurements of microtremors and ambient noise measurements. The synthesis of all these data resulted in the construction of the seismic geotechnical map and the geometry of the “seismic bedrock” of the …

Performance Of Solid Waste Soil In Earthquake Of Boroujerd And Silakhor, Hamed Niroumand

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

This paper presented survey of solid waste without geosynthetics in Boroujerd and Silakhor earthquake and it’s compared with a case of solid waste with geosynthetics under seismic in earthquake of Boroujerd. The result of performance of solid waste soils during earthquakes is the most real source of information on the seismic reaction of solid waste soils. The information from a big Broujerd and Silakhor earthquakes indicate that the typical performance of soils during earthquake is different. Thus, combined with the fact that limited soil with geosynthetic liners and no more waste soil with a geosynthetic use have been subjected to …

Fault Hazard Characterization For A Transportation Tunnel Project In Coronado, California, James R. Gingery, Scott H. Rugg, Thomas K. Rockwell, Bruce R. Hilton

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

This paper presents the results of a fault hazard study performed as part of a proposed traffic tunnel project in Coronado, California. The 2.3 km alignment crosses the Coronado fault, which is considered active by the California Geological Survey. Although the location of the Coronado fault offshore of Coronado had been well established through previous studies, the fault had never been definitively located on land. A study was undertaken that utilized four principal investigation methods: a seismic reflection survey, large diameter borings, closely-spaced cone penetrometer tests (CPT) and a fault trench. This study was the first to positively locate the …

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The San Diego County Water Authority (Water Authority) is undertaking a raise of the existing San Vicente Dam to provide both emergency and carryover storage to increase local reservoir supplies in San Diego County, California, USA. The emergency storage is required in case of a disruption to the imported water transmission system from floods or earthquakes and the carry-over storage would be utilized to store water during “wet” seasons to carry-over to seasons of drought. The existing San Vicente Dam is a 220 foot (67 m) high concrete gravity dam completed in 1943 with 90,063 acre-feet of storage. The raised …

The Rose Canyon Fault Zone In San Diego, Thomas Rockwell May 2010

The Rose Canyon Fault Zone In San Diego, Thomas Rockwell

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The Rose Canyon fault bisects the City of San Diego, producing much of the unique beauty of the city with the uplift of Mt. Soledad and subsidence producing the natural harbor of San Diego Bay. Geologic studies demonstrate that the late Quaternary slip rate is in the range of 1-2 mm/yr, which although only a fraction of the plate margin slip budget, has the potential to produce major damage in “America’s finest city”. Paleoseismic trenching in La Jolla and downtown San Diego indicate that the most recent surface rupture occurred only a few hundred years ago, sometime after about AD1523 …

Ground Improvement Using Stone Column, K. S. Beena May 2010

Ground Improvement Using Stone Column, K. S. Beena

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The use of stone column (called granular piles) has proved to be an economical and technically viable ground improvement technique for construction on soft soils and has been successfully applied for the foundation structure like oil storage tanks, earth embankments, raft foundation etc. When the stone columns are installed in extremely soft soils, the lateral confinement offered by the surrounding soil may not be adequate to form the stone column. In such soil, encasing the stone column with a geotextile can induce required lateral confinement. Considering the cost aspect of stone columns, the major portion of the cost owes to …

Numerical And Experimental Investigation Of Soil Behaviour Under Stationary Excitation, Holger Wienbroer, Daniel Rebstock, Gerhard Huber May 2010

Numerical And Experimental Investigation Of Soil Behaviour Under Stationary Excitation, Holger Wienbroer, Daniel Rebstock, Gerhard Huber

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The effect of earthquakes on the behavior of soil and/or structures is usually investigated using earthquake-like signals as input for loading. This holds true for most of numerical and experimental simulations. In contrast to those approaches sinusoidal excitation was used here. The benefit of this type of excitation is an increased observability of the system, which is a precondition for a systematic investigation. Since sinusoidal excitation allows a gradually, step by step increase of the applied loading, the state of the soil (density and effective stress) as well as pore water pressure are transient. Therefore they are varying slowly and …

Displacement Ductility Capacity Of Fixed-Head Piles, Jiunn-Shyang Chiou, Cheng-Hsing Chen May 2010

Displacement Ductility Capacity Of Fixed-Head Piles, Jiunn-Shyang Chiou, Cheng-Hsing Chen

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

This study performs a parametric study on the displacement ductility capacity of a fixed-head pile. The Winkler-beam model is employed, in which both the soil nonlinearity and pile nonlinearity are adequately considered. In this parametric study, the pile is regarded as a limited ductility structure which conditionally allows the pile deformation to enter the plastic range during loadings. The analysis variables include the axial force, the pile diameter, the longitudinal reinforcement ratio, and the soil stiffness. The relationships of the displacement ductility capacity of the pile to the curvature ductility capacity and to the over-strength ratio of the pile section …

Evaluation Of Seismic Demand Of Pile Foundation For Performance Based Design, M. H. Baziar, A. H. Ghaderinia

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Accurate prediction of seismic performance of structures is important in reducing risks from earthquakes. Within the context of emerging performance-based earthquake engineering trends, seismic performance is measured with respect to the demand of engineering systems during a seismic event as opposed to the conventional factor of safety approach. Investigation of the correlation between so-called engineering demand parameters and various intensity measures has received substantial attention in earthquake engineering, as accurate prediction of seismic demand is desired in performance based seismic design. In this study the seismic demand of pile foundations are investigated in a performance based approach. A soil-pile-superstructure model …

Overview Of The Seismic Threat In The Central United States, J. David Rogers, Deniz Karadeniz May 2010

Overview Of The Seismic Threat In The Central United States, J. David Rogers, Deniz Karadeniz

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

This paper summarizes geological, geophysical and seismological studies in two accepted and one candidate seismic zones in the central United States. The area was shaken by as many as 2,000 felt earthquakes in 1811-12, including four events greater than Magnitudes 7.0. These occurred before the area west of the Mississippi River was settled, so the intensity of shaking was not recorded over much of the affected region. Earthquakes in the central United States are felt over a much broader area than similar magnitude earthquakes in the western United States because of the low attenuation associated with undeformed Paleozoic age strata …

The paper presents an overview of recent advances in earthquake geotechnical engineering with respect to the seismic design of geotechnical structures. The modern principles in seismic design are described along the framework of performance-based design as adopted in the International Standard (ISO23469). With the growing awareness of the need to understand the effect of non-linearity in soils and soil-structure interaction, the paper discusses the highly non-linear response of ground during strong earthquake motions with a peak ground acceleration exceeding 1g, and the highly non-linear behavior of soil-pile interaction, including soil-pile separation. The modern principles in seismic design described in this …

Pushover And Inelastic-Seismic Response Of Shallow Foundations Supporting A Slender Structure, George Gazetas, Andriani I. Panagiotidou, Nikos Gerolymos May 2010

Pushover And Inelastic-Seismic Response Of Shallow Foundations Supporting A Slender Structure, George Gazetas, Andriani I. Panagiotidou, Nikos Gerolymos

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The interaction between a surface foundation and the supporting inelastic soil under the action of monotonic, cyclic, and seismic loading is studied numerically. The foundation supports an elastic tall system, the horizontal loading of which induces primarily an overturning moment and secondarily a shear force. Starting from linear elastic behavior, the footing eventually uplifts from the soil, provoking strong inelastic soil response culminating in development of a bearing–capacity failure mechanism and progressive settlement. The substantial lateral displacement of the pier mass induces an additional aggravating moment due to P–δ effect. The paper outlines the moment–rotation–settlement relations under monotonic loading at …

Criterions, Prediction And Prevention Of Loess Liquefaction, Lanmin Wang, Zhongxia Yuan, Haimei Sun, Jin Deng

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Although loess liquefaction is not very common during earthquakes in Northwest of China, it is disastrous if it happens. Both study and valid evidence from Haiyuan 8.5 Earthquake in 1920 and Tajikistan 5.9 Earthquake in 1989 have proved that loess liquefaction could be very disastrous under certain conditions. In this paper, the criterions of loess liquefaction are discussed to show that unlike typical liquefaction of sand, loess which falls into the category of both silt clay and clayey silt has unique characteristics during liquefaction test. To predict liquefaction of loess, a simple method based on laboratory test and field evidences …

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Lateral load tests were performed on a full-scale pile cap in untreated clay along with pile groups involving (a) excavation and replacement with sand backfill, (b) a soilcrete wall along the side of the pile group, and (c) a jet grouted zone below the pile cap. The average compressive strength of the soft, plastic clay increased from an average of 50 kPa to an average of about 1000 kPa with soil mixing (10% cement) and to 3000 kPa with jet grouting (20% cement). Excavation and replacement only increased resistance by about 20%; however, the soil mixed wall increased resistance by …

Liquefaction Induced Settlement Of Structures, Gopal S. P. Madabhushi, Stuart K. Haigh May 2010

Liquefaction Induced Settlement Of Structures, Gopal S. P. Madabhushi, Stuart K. Haigh

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Soil liquefaction following earthquakes leads to excessive damage to a wide variety of structures. Settlement and rotation of structures following liquefaction have been witnessed in many of the recent earthquakes. Investigation of the mechanisms of failure of structure when the foundation soil suffers either partial or full liquefaction is therefore very important. Dynamic centrifuge tests were conducted at Cambridge and elsewhere on different boundary value problems in which liquefaction of soil models was investigated. Excess pore pressure data and the settlement data for the particular structure that is being investigated are recorded during the centrifuge tests. In this paper the …

Recent Advances In Terrestrial Lidar Applications In Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering, Roberto Kayer, Jonathan P. Stewart, Brian D. Collins

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

During the past five years, geotechnical earthquake engineering and ground deformation research has benefited from the advent of terrestrial LIDAR technology, a revolutionary tool for characterizing fine-scale changes in topography. For ground deformation research, LIDAR is particularly useful for characterizing the dimensions of failures and for monitoring subtle deformations through time. Tripod mounted LIDAR systems have accuracies of approximately 0.4-2.0 cm, and can illuminate targets up to one kilometer away from the sensor. During several minutes of LIDAR scanning, millions of survey position points are collected and processed into an ultra-high resolution terrain model. During earthquake reconnaissance efforts, the detailed …

Geotechnical Aspects Of Recent Japan Earthquakes, Susumu Yasuda, Tomohiro Tanaka

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Recently middle class earthquakes have occurred and caused various geotechnical damages every year in Japan. Among them geotechnical damages during five earthquakes from 2004 to 2008 are introduced. The 2004 Niigataken-chuetsu earthquake caused failure of expressway embankments and uplift of sewage manholes. Liquefaction-induced damage to quay walls and tanks occurred in artificially reclaimed lands during the 2005 Fukuokaken-seiho-oki earthquake. Liquefiable area had been predicted about 17 years before the earthquake. Liquefied zones were fairly coincided with the predicted liquefiable zones. Very severe slide of highway embankments occurred at 11 sites during the 2007 Notohanto earthquake. During the 2007 Niigataken-chuetsu-oki earthquake, …

California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) initiated a seismic retrofit program in early 1990 following the Loma Prieta and Northridge Earthquakes to strengthen existing toll bridges and many regular bridges in California. Prior to the CALTRANS’ seismic retrofit program, there were very little guidelines and criteria available to undertake seismic retrofit of existing bridges and design of new structures to withstand potentially large magnitude future earthquakes. Significant advancements have been made since the beginning of the seismic retrofit program. This paper will discuss the author’s experience from the seismic retrofits of many existing toll bridges and designs of new toll bridges. …

Dealing In Practice With Selecting And Modifying Earthquake Ground Motions For Nonlinear Analysis, Jorge F. Meneses May 2010

Dealing In Practice With Selecting And Modifying Earthquake Ground Motions For Nonlinear Analysis, Jorge F. Meneses

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Nonlinear earthquake analyzes of structures are increasingly required by building codes and other seismic design regulations. An essential component of these analyses is that the geotechnical engineer has to provide the structural engineer with a set of strong motion time histories, typically three or seven sets containing two orthogonal horizontal components, and one vertical component if needed. The procedure for selecting the seed time histories and modifying them to match the design response spectrum involves several steps including development of seismological criteria, earthquake deaggregation analysis, and spectral matching. This procedure for selecting and modifying earthquake ground motions is explained based …
