Relative Importance Of Fire Resistance Performance Of Partition Walls, Ming-Chin Ho, Ming-Ju Tsai Jun 2010

Relative Importance Of Fire Resistance Performance Of Partition Walls, Ming-Chin Ho, Ming-Ju Tsai

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The fire performance of partitions is influenced by the thickness, type, combustibility level of panel material, type of filling material and frame. However, realizing the importance of these parameters is not of enough help for interior designers. They need more quantitative information of the relative importance of the parameters so that they can select materials with cost consideration. Experiments were thus designed and analyzed by the Taguchi experimental design analysis method for it is good to determine the effect of each parameter especially as the number of parameters is large. Our data and analysis show that the thickness of panel …

Probabilistic Assessment Of Seismic Drift Demands For Frame Structures In Near-Fault Regions, Jan Tysh-Shang, Lin Chiung-Yueh, Wu Chun-Wei

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The purpose of this paper is to provide engineers with a rapid procedure to assess the maximum inter-story drift for generic moment-resisting frame (GMRF) structures in nearfault regions. In this procedure, the maximum inter-story drift demand of a structure can be evaluated by starting from the median value of elastic spectral displacement at the first period of the structure, and then amplifying it with some modification factors. Statistical parameters (medians and dispersions) of the distributions of these factors are obtained by performing linear, and nonlinear, dynamic simulations on codecompliant steel GMRF structures, to near-fault ground motions during Taiwan’s Chi-Chi earthquake …

The Influence Of Broken Cables On The Structural Behavior Of Long-Span Cable-Stayed Bridges, Chin-Sheng Kao, Chang-Huan Kou

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The influence of broken cables on the structural behavior of long-span cable-stayed bridges is examined considering all the nonlinear characteristics of a long-span cable-stayed bridge. The results show the influences of the broken cable on the structural behavior, such as the internal force, displacement, and the ultimate load-bearing capacity, are clear when an outside cable breaks. The results of the present study should assist in deciding when to replace cables in long-span cablestayed bridges.

Genetic Algorithm-Based Chaos Clustering Approach For Nonlinear Optimization, Min-Yuan Cheng, Kuo-Yu Huang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this paper, a n-dimension convergence algorithm was employed to track the potential trend of evolution in traditional genetic algorithm (GA) by K-means clustering technique. And, chaotic algorithm was exploited to prevent the new approach from premature. By means of the proposed approach, not only the basic search capability was maintained but also the flexibility and efficiency of parametric modeling were improved. The main purpose of the paper is to demonstrate how the GA optimizer can be improved by incorporating a hybridization strategy. Experimental studies revealed that the hybrid chaotic approach with genetic algorithm (CGA) procedure could produce much more …

Numerical Assessment Of A Space-Constrained Venting System With Multi-Chamber Plug Mufflers By Ga Method, Chiu Min-Chie, Chang Ying-Chun Jun 2010

Numerical Assessment Of A Space-Constrained Venting System With Multi-Chamber Plug Mufflers By Ga Method, Chiu Min-Chie, Chang Ying-Chun

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Recently, research on new techniques of single-chamber plug silencers has been addressed. However, the assessment of a multi-chamber plug muffler’s optimal shape design within a constrained space as well as a pressure-drop limit which are mostly concerned with the necessity of operation and system venting in practical engineering work was rarely tackled. Therefore, this paper will not only analyze the sound transmission loss (STL) of a space-constrained multi-chamber plug muffler but also optimize the best design shape under a specified pressure drop. In this paper, the generalized decoupling technique and plane wave theory used to solve the coupled acoustical problem …

Numerical Solutions Of Coastal Morphodynamic Evolution For Complex Topography, Chiang Yun-Chih, Hsiao Sung-Shan, Lin Ming-Chung Jun 2010

Numerical Solutions Of Coastal Morphodynamic Evolution For Complex Topography, Chiang Yun-Chih, Hsiao Sung-Shan, Lin Ming-Chung

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Numerical modeling of coastal morphodynamic evolution is a powerful tool for the planning and design of coastal engineering. The coastal morphological modeling system is based on the sediment conservation law, which couples modules for waves, wave-driven currents, and sediment transport rates. The numerical scheme for the sediment conservation law and nonlinear coupling between these modules can lead to dispersions, diffusions, spurious oscillations and stability problems that are still not well developed. In this paper, the bedslope updating techniques, oscillation removal schemes, and 2-step, 3-time-level temporal discretization are employed to avoid oscillations and improve the stability of the coastal morphological model …

Prediction Of Nonlinear System By Chaotic Modular, Wang Chin-Tsan, Chen Ji-Cong, Shaw Cheng-Kuang Jun 2010

Prediction Of Nonlinear System By Chaotic Modular, Wang Chin-Tsan, Chen Ji-Cong, Shaw Cheng-Kuang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Determining a suitable method of adequately predicting different nonlinear systems is necessary for instantaneous signal control. A chaotic modular found for realizing the prediction of signal control was applied to three different physical models: the Lorenz attractor, Chua’s circuit, and chaotic wake flow. Testing results from the three cases show that the behaviors of the nonlinear systems are predicted for instant signal control successfully. This evidence confirms that the chaotic module found by the authors is very useful for instant signal control and can be utilized as a tool for instantaneous prediction of nonlinear systems

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The present study numerically investigates the twodimensional laminar flow past a circular cylinder forced to oscillate transverse to the free-stream. The numerical simulations are performed at a various range of cylinder oscillation frequency ranged between 0.8 and 1.2 of the natural vortex shedding frequency, and the oscillation amplitude extended up to 50% of the cylinder diameter at one Reynolds number of 185 showing the typical two-dimensional vortex shedding. The immersed boundary method is used to handle the oscillating cylinder in a rectangular grid system using the finite volume method. The primary vortex shedding frequency has the same value with the …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The main purpose of this paper is provided the theoretical elucidation and parameter investigation for the experimental results performed by Lu et al. [Relationship between the free and total chloride diffusivity in concrete, Cement and Concrete Research, 32(2) 323~326 (2002)]. The analytical solution of Fick’s second law of linear diffusion in a semi-infinite quasi-homogeneous and isotropic concrete with initial and boundary conditions is used to curve fitting the experimental results and to find the relevant parameters such as the total and free chloride concentrations and diffusivities. The total chloride diffusivity is 2.8 times the free one. It seems plausible to …

This report details an experiment done to verify the effectiveness of a passive flow control system on a two-dimensional bluff body, blunt trailing edge model in controlling wake dimension and Karman vortex sheds. An earlier experiment by Park, et.al.[1] performed analysis via wind tunnel pressure testing and computerized model to determine the ideal proportions of such a tab design and identify the flow properties responsible for the potential drag reduction. To obtain visual verification of the existence of these concepts, a bluff body model proportionally identical to the one used by Park, et.al., was designed and tested in a water …

Natural Fibers And Fiberglass: A Technical And Economic Comparison, Justin Andrew Zsiros Jun 2010

Natural Fibers And Fiberglass: A Technical And Economic Comparison, Justin Andrew Zsiros

Theses and Dissertations

Natural fibers have received attention in recent years because of their minimal environmental impact, reasonably good properties, and low cost. There is a wide variety of natural fibers suitable for composite applications, the most common of which is flax. Flax has advantages in tensile strength, light weight, and low cost over other natural fibers. As with other natural and synthetic fibers, flax is used to reinforce both thermoset and thermoplastic matrices. When flax is used in thermoplastic matrices, polypropylene and polyethylene are the main resins used. Although at first glance flax may seem to be a cheaper alternative to fiberglass, …

A Full-Range, Multi-Variable, Cfd-Based Methodology To Identify Abnormal Near-Wall Hemodynamics In A Stented Coronary Artery, Jonathan Murphy, Fergal Boyle Jun 2010

A Full-Range, Multi-Variable, Cfd-Based Methodology To Identify Abnormal Near-Wall Hemodynamics In A Stented Coronary Artery, Jonathan Murphy, Fergal Boyle

Articles

The benefit of coronary stent implantation is reduced by excessive intimal hyperplasia which re-narrows the artery and the prevention of which is still a primary concern for clinicians. Abnormal hemodynamics create non-physiological viscous stress on the artery wall, one of the root causes of intimal hyperplasia following stent implantation. A methodology to comprehensively evaluate the viscous stress on the artery wall following stent implantation would be useful to evaluate a stent’s hemodynamic performance. The proposed methodology employs 3D computational fluid dynamics, the variables wall shear stress (WSS), WSS gradient (WSSG), WSS angle gradient (WSSAG) and a statistical analysis to evaluate …

Numerical Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Limited Width Gravel Backfills In Increasing Lateral Passive Resistance, Mo'oud Nasr Jun 2010

Numerical Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Limited Width Gravel Backfills In Increasing Lateral Passive Resistance, Mo'oud Nasr

Theses and Dissertations

Two series of static full-scale lateral pile cap tests were conducted on pile caps with different aspect ratios, with full width (homogeneous) and limited width backfill conditions involving loose sand and dense gravel. The limited width backfills were constructed by placing a relatively narrow zone (3 to 6 ft (0.91 to 1.83 m)) of higher density gravel material adjacent to the cap with loose sand beyond the gravel zone. Test results indicated that large increases in lateral passive resistance could be expected for limited width backfills. The main focus of this study is to assess the contribution of plane strain …

A Comparative Analysis Of Methods For Baseline Drift Removal In Preterm Infant Respiration Signals, Pallavi Ramnarain Jun 2010

A Comparative Analysis Of Methods For Baseline Drift Removal In Preterm Infant Respiration Signals, Pallavi Ramnarain

Theses and Dissertations

Breathing is a vital function intrinsic to the survival of any human being. In preterm infants it is an important indicator of maturation and feeding competency, which is a hallmark for hospital release. The recommended method of measurement of infant respiration is the use of thermistors. Accurate event detection within thermistor generated signals relies heavily upon effective noise reduction, specifically baseline drift removal. Baseline drift originates from several sensor-based factors, including thermistor placement within the sensor and in relation to the infant nares. This work compares four methods for baseline drift removal using the same event detection algorithm. The methods …

Quantum Capacitance Extraction For Carbon Nanotube Interconnects, Vidur Parkash, Ashok K. Goel

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Electrical transport in metallic carbon nanotubes, especially the ones with diameters of the order of a few nanometers can be best described using the Tomanaga Luttinger liquid (TL) model. Recently, the TL model has been used to create a convenient transmission line like phenomenological model for carbon nanotubes. In this paper, we have characterized metallic nanotubes based on that model, quantifying the quantum capacitances of individual metallic single walled carbon nanotubes and crystalline bundles of single walled tubes of different diameters. Our calculations show that the quantum capacitances for both individual tubes and the bundles show a weak dependence on …

Hardware Implementation Of Symbol Synchronization For Underwater Fsk, Ying Li, Xing Zhang, Bridget Benson, Ryan Kastner

Electrical Engineering

Symbol synchronization is a critical component in the design of an underwater acoustic modem. Without accurate symbol synchronization, higher bit error rates incur thus reducing the reliability and quality of service of the wireless network. This paper provides a practical description of the design choices and hardware implementation details required to build a compact and efficient symbol synchronizer suitable for a short-range, low-power underwater FSK acoustic modem. Experimental results show the design meets the timing requirements of the underwater modem and provides accurate synchronization while consuming only 0.240W power in a Spartan3 xc3s2000 FPGA.

Channel Equalization Based On Data Reuse Lms Algorithm For Shallow Water Acoustic Communication, Feng Tong, Bridget Benson, Ying Li, Ryan Kastner

Electrical Engineering

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the design of underwater acoustic modems for marine environmental monitoring, underwater structure inspection and sea bottom resource exploitation. As underwater acoustic channels pose difficulties such as multipath, time-space selectivity, frequency dependent noise, and Doppler shifts on transmission, research on adaptive equalizers play an important role in the design of underwater modems. This paper presents a data reuse least mean square (DR-LMS) algorithm to achieve equalization performance with low computational complexity to facilitate a practical hardware implementation. Experimental results obtained in physical shallow water channels demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method …
