Development Of Experimental Methods To Assess Adsorption Free Energy For Peptide-Surface Interactions, Yang Wei Jul 2010

Development Of Experimental Methods To Assess Adsorption Free Energy For Peptide-Surface Interactions, Yang Wei

All Dissertations

Because of its governing role in cellular response to implants and substrates for biomedical applications, the understanding and control of protein adsorption to material surfaces has been one of the major topics of research in the field of biomaterials. Unfortunately, it has proven to be extremely difficult to quantitatively understand and control these types of interactions because of the complexities involved, and existing methods that have been developed and used to characterize protein-surface interactions have proved to be inadequate to provide the level of detail necessary to achieve this understanding. New, more fundamental methods, both experimental and computational, are needed …

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

Leucite-based glass-ceramics were prepared by controlled crystallization of suitable glass compositions to give required crystalline phase/s. Three glass batches in the system SiO2 - K2O - NaO2 - Al2O3 - TiO2 - CaO were prepared by varying K2O/SiO2 ratio, then melted and quenched. Glasses were characterized for onset of crystallization temperatures by differential thermal analysis (DTA), and heat treatments were carried out from 850 - 1000°C for 4 hours for controlled crystallization of leucite phase. Physical, chemical and crystal structure characterizations were carried out using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD found …

Effect Of Chitosan's Molecular Weights On Mangosteen Dye Fixation On Cotton Fabric, C Suitcharit, F Awae, W Sengmama, K Srikulkit

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

The effect of chitosan's molecular weights (Mw) on mangosteen dye fixation on cotton was studied using chitosans with Mw of 226 kDa (CTS-Mw I; native chitosan), 10.8 kDa (CTS-Mw II), and 7.2 kDa (CTS-Mw III). The preparation of chitosan with different Mws was carried out using sodium nitrite in acid media (depolymerization process). The obtained chitosans were applied onto cotton fabric. The effect of chitosan concentrations on fixation and fastness properties of mangosteen dye extract was studied. The results showed that an increase in concentrations of depolymerized chitosans (CTS-Mw II and III) yielded an increase in N% contents. Nonetheless, the …

System Dynamics Implementation Of An Extended Brander And Taylor-Like Easter Island Model, Takuro Uehara, Yoko Nagase, Wayne Wakeland Jul 2010

System Dynamics Implementation Of An Extended Brander And Taylor-Like Easter Island Model, Takuro Uehara, Yoko Nagase, Wayne Wakeland

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

We provide a system dynamics implementation of a dynamic ecological economics model. Dynamic economic models are often constrained to use functions, such as the Cobb-Douglas function, chosen “conveniently” to allow for analytic solutions. The C-D function, however, suffers from its fixed elasticity that does not allow for the substitutability between man-made capital and natural capital to change, which is vital for economic sustainability. Using system dynamics removes this constraint and enables more realistic ecological economics models containing functions not amenable to analytic solution. The base model is the natural resource and population growth model developed by Brander and Taylor (1998) …

Second-Generation International Space Station Total Organic Carbon Analyzer Verification Testing And On-Orbit Performance Results, Nicole L. Bentley, Evan A. Thomas, Michael Van Wie, Chad Morrison

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The International Space Station (ISS) total organic carbon analyzer (TOCA) is designed to autonomously assess recovered water quality by providing an indication of total organic carbon (TOC). The current TOCA has been on the ISS since November 2008. Functional checkout and operations revealed complex operating considerations. Specifically, failure of the hydrogen (H2) catalyst resulted in development of an innovative oxidation analysis method. This method reduces activation time and limits the H2 produced during analysis, while retaining the ability to indicate TOC concentrations within 25% accuracy. Subsequent testing and comparison to archived samples returned from the station and tested on the …

Fatigue Strength Of Steel Bridge Members With Intersecting Welds, David T. Delong, Mark D. Bowman

JTRP Technical Reports

The brittle fracture of the Hoan Bridge in December 2000 highlighted the fracture susceptibility of details containing intersecting welds in steel bridges. Though it is now known that details with intersecting welds should be avoided, many existing bridges in Indiana contain details with intersecting welds. Little experimental data on the fatigue performance of these details exists.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fatigue strength of several details commonly found in steel bridges in Indiana that contain intersecting welds. Large-scale experimental fatigue testing were performed using nine steel beams to study the behavior of three basic types of …

Evolutionary Quantum Logic Synthesis Of Boolean Reversible Logic Circuits Embedded In Ternary Quantum Space Using Heuristics, Martin Lukac, Marek Perkowski, Michitaka Kameyama

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

It has been experimentally proven that realizing universal quantum gates using higher-radices logic is practically and technologically possible. We developed a Parallel Genetic Algorithm that synthesizes Boolean reversible circuits realized with a variety of quantum gates on qudits with various radices. In order to allow synthesizing circuits of medium sizes in the higher radix quantum space we performed the experiments using a GPU accelerated Genetic Algorithm. Using the accelerated GA we compare heuristic improvements to the mutation process based on cost minimization, on the adaptive cost of the primitives and improvements due to Baldwinian vs. Lamarckian GA.We also describe various …

Developing Sustainable Life Support System Concepts, Evan A. Thomas

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Sustainable spacecraft life support concepts may allow the development of more reliable technologies for long-duration space missions. Currently, life support technologies at different levels of development are not well evaluated against each other, and evaluation methods do not account for long-term reliability and sustainability of the hardware. This paper presents point-of-departure Sustainable System Mass (SSM) evaluation criteria for life support systems that may allow more robust technology development, testing, and comparison. An example sustainable water recovery system concept is presented.

Image-Based Quantification Workflow For Coronary Morphology: A Tool For Use In Next-Generation Bifurcation Stent Design, Sara Marie Nomeland Jul 2010

Image-Based Quantification Workflow For Coronary Morphology: A Tool For Use In Next-Generation Bifurcation Stent Design, Sara Marie Nomeland

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Coronary artery disease (CAD) occurs in ~200,000 bifurcation lesions annually. Treatment of CAD near bends and bifurcations is challenging and a preferred strategy for bifurcation lesions has yet to be established. However, a favorable treatment option may be elucidated by a more thorough understanding of vessel morphology as well as local hemodynamic alterations caused by current stenting approaches. Computational modeling of human arteries offers an attractive way to investigate the relationships between geometry, hemodynamics and vascular disease. Recent developments also make it possible to perform analysis on realistic geometries acquired noninvasively.

The objective of this work was twofold. The first …

Simulation Of Temperature Distributions In Tissue Upon Laser Pulse Irradiation Including Water Mass Transfer, Deepthi Nagulapally

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Lasers, due to their unique characteristics, have tremendous applications in the medical field. Generally all laser applications in hie-medicine involve the propagation of laser energy through tissue. Energy is deposited giving rise to many physical, hie-chemical, and mechanical effects. Among these are dynamical changes in the local temperature distributions within the tissue. Analysis of the temperature changes requires the creation of an appropriate optical transmission and heat flow model that incorporates user specified laser parameters. Here, a numerical simulation model was developed to study both steady state and time dependent temperature distributions due to pulsed laser radiation within user specified …

Asymmetrical Cascade Multilevel Converters With Noninteger Or Dynamically Changing Dc Voltage Ratios: Concepts And Modulation Techniques, Shuai Lu, Sébastien Mariéthoz, Keith Corzine

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Asymmetrical cascade multilevel inverters offer a high number of voltage levels with a given switch count. for a given topology, the number of levels depends on the configuration of the dc voltage (ratios). This paper deals with the design and control of such converters with Non integer dc voltage ratio, which leads to unevenly distributed space vectors. It describes how to select the dc voltage ratio configurations that yield space vectors as evenly distributed as possible. It describes how to produce an effective PWM modulation that allows generating undistorted current even in the presence of (some) unevenly distributed space vectors. …

Synthesis Study: Development Of An Electronic Detection And Warning System To Prevent Overheight Vehicles From Impacting Overhead Bridges, Joseph V. Sinfield

JTRP Technical Reports

Overheight vehicle impacts with bridges are surprisingly common. The damage from collisions can range from minor to severe, and there is also evidence that some bridges are impacted multiple times, leading to the potential for cumulative damage effects. Thus there is a clear need to attempt to prevent overheight vehicle collisions with bridges.

This Synthesis Study provides a review of solutions that exist to detect and forewarn overheight vehicles and thereby prevent a collision, and specifically examines the breadth of available overheight vehicle detection technologies, the commercial availability of such equipment, and the experience of relevant DOTs with installed and …

A Miniature Energy Harvesting Device For Wireless Sensors In Electric Power System, Rashed H. Bhuiyan, Roger A. Dougal, Mohammod Ali Jul 2010

A Miniature Energy Harvesting Device For Wireless Sensors In Electric Power System, Rashed H. Bhuiyan, Roger A. Dougal, Mohammod Ali

Faculty Publications

A novel energy harvesting device called the energy coupler is proposed which can provide power to small wireless sensors in a power system. The energy coupler when coupled electromagnetically to a nearby current carrying conductor scavenges ac power from the conductor. The proposed energy coupler converts the harvested ac power into dc using a passive voltage multiplier circuit. The design of the energy coupler is such that the dc power obtained is adequate to charge a miniature 1.2-V rechargeable battery. It is demonstrated that the energy coupler is capable of delivering 10 mW of dc power to a 50-Ω load. …

Securing Foreign Oil: A Case For Including Military Operations In The Climate Change Impact Of Fuels, Adam J. Liska, Richard K. Perrin Jul 2010

Securing Foreign Oil: A Case For Including Military Operations In The Climate Change Impact Of Fuels, Adam J. Liska, Richard K. Perrin

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Military operations are major industrial activities that use massive amounts of fuel and materials that significantly contribute to climate change. In this article, we assert that military activity to protect international oil trade is a direct production component for importing foreign oil— as necessary for imports as are pipelines and supertankers—and therefore the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from that military activity are relevant to U.S. fuel policies related to climate change. Military security for protection of global maritime petroleum distribution is part of the acquisition process, but in addition, recent Middle Eastern wars may also be related to securing petroleum …

Effective Heuristic Methods For Finding Non-Optimal Solutions Of Interest In Constrained Optimization Models, Steven O. Kimbrough, Ann Kuo, Hoong Chuin Lau Jul 2010

Effective Heuristic Methods For Finding Non-Optimal Solutions Of Interest In Constrained Optimization Models, Steven O. Kimbrough, Ann Kuo, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper introduces the SoI problem, that of finding nonoptimal solutions of interest for constrained optimization models. SoI problems subsume finding FoIs (feasible solutions of interest), and IoIs (infeasible solutions of interest). In all cases, the interest addressed is post-solution analysis in one form or another. Post-solution analysis of a constrained optimization model occurs after the model has been solved and a good or optimal solution for it has been found. At this point, sensitivity analysis and other questions of import for decision making (discussed in the paper) come into play and for this purpose the SoIs can be of …
