Work In Progress -- Balancing Prescribed And Project-Based Experiences In Microfabrication Laboratories, Chang-Soo Kim, Steve Eugene Watkins

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Student education for microfabrication processes needs to integrate theoretical understanding with process understanding. Instructional challenges exist in designing effective laboratory experiences. The pedagogical issues include linking theoretical lecture concepts to cost-effective laboratories, tailoring the relative time between lectures and laboratories, and balancing the laboratory assignments between prescribed and project-based experiences. We describe the progressive implementations of microfabrication laboratory experiences in graduate courses. The first offering has no laboratory activity. The prescribed laboratory and project-based laboratory components were gradually incorporated. All laboratory experiences were team-based and utilized cost-effective facilities. The assessments indicate that students prefer significant laboratory experience and that learning …

Development Of An Integrated Land-Use Transportation Model For Indiana, Li Jin, Jon D. Fricker

JTRP Technical Reports

The Indiana Department of Transportation has an operational statewide travel demand model (ISTDM). INDOT also has used the Land Use Central Indiana (LUCI) model to forecast conversion of land to residential and employment uses in future decades over a 44-county area in central Indiana. This paper describes how the LUCI model was expanded to cover the same geographic area as the ISTDM, how the internal structure of each model was made to be compatible with the other model, and how the outputs from each model were made to be suitable as inputs to the other model. The result is an …

Analysis And Determination Of Axle Load Spectra And Traffic Input For The Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide, Yi Jiang, Shuo Li, Tommy E. Nantung, Huaxin Chen

JTRP Technical Reports

The values of equivalent single axle loads (ESAL) have been used to represent the vehicle loads in pavement design. To improve the pavement design procedures, a new method, called the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG), has been developed to use the axle load spectra to represent the vehicle loads in pavement design. These spectra represent the percentage of the total axle applications within each load interval for single, tandem, tridem, and quad axles. Using axle load spectra as the traffic input, the MEPDG method is able to analyze the impacts of varying traffic loads on pavement and provide an optimal …

A Detailed Look At The Omega-K Algorithm For Processing Synthetic Aperture Radar Data, Matthew A. Tolman Oct 2008

A Detailed Look At The Omega-K Algorithm For Processing Synthetic Aperture Radar Data, Matthew A. Tolman

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, the Omega-k algorithm used for processing stripmap synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data is explored in detail. While the original Omega-k algorithm does not achieve the same SNR as a matched filter, a modification is presented which enables the algorithm to nearly achieve that SNR. It is shown that the focused point spread function obtained when the Omega-k algorithm is used differs in important ways from the output of a modified version of the matched filter. Spread out sidelobes and a stretched mainlobe are observed when the data is processed by the Omega-k algorithm. These differences may increase …

Eliminating Via-Plane Coupling Using Ground Vias For High-Speed Signal Transitions, Songping Wu, Xin Chang, Christian Schuster, Xiaoxiong Gu, Jun Fan Oct 2008

Eliminating Via-Plane Coupling Using Ground Vias For High-Speed Signal Transitions, Songping Wu, Xin Chang, Christian Schuster, Xiaoxiong Gu, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

When a high-speed signal transits through a via that penetrates a plane pair, parallel-plane resonances can cause additional insertion loss for the signal. To eliminate this via-plane coupling, ground vias are added adjacent to the signal via. This paper discusses the impact of the ground vias as a function of the number of the ground vias, their locations, and the size of the plane pair. A block-by-block physics-based equivalent circuit modeling approach is used in the study. The underlying physics of the phenomenon and the design implications are also discussed in the paper.

Hardware Implementation Of An Ais-Based Optimal Excitation Controller For An Electric Ship, Chuan Yan, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Keith Corzine

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The operation of high energy loads on Navy's future electric ships, such as directed energy weapons, will cause disturbances in the main bus voltage and impact the operation of the rest of the power system when the pulsed loads are directly powered from the main dc bus. This paper describes an online design and laboratory hardware implementation of an optimal excitation controller using an artificial immune system (AIS) based algorithm. The AIS algorithm, a clonal selection algorithm (CSA), is used to minimize the effects of pulsed loads by improved excitation control and thus, reduce the requirement on energy storage device …

Function-Based Failure Propagation For Conceptual Design, Daniel A. Krus, Katie Grantham Oct 2008

Function-Based Failure Propagation For Conceptual Design, Daniel A. Krus, Katie Grantham

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

When designing a product, the earlier the potential risks can be identified, the more costs can be saved, as it is easier to modify a design in its early stages. Several methods exist to analyze the risk in a system, but all require a mature design. However, by applying the concept of “common interfaces” to a functional model and utilizing a historical knowledge base, it is possible to analyze chains of failures during the conceptual phase of product design. This paper presents a method based on these common interfaces to be used in conjunction with other methods such as risk …

A Model Based Fault Detection Scheme For Nonlinear Multivariable Discrete-Time Systems, Balaje T. Thumati, Jagannathan Sarangapani Oct 2008

A Model Based Fault Detection Scheme For Nonlinear Multivariable Discrete-Time Systems, Balaje T. Thumati, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a novel robust scheme is developed for detecting faults in nonlinear discrete time multi-input and multi-output systems in contrast with the available schemes that are developed in continuous-time. Both state and output faults are addressed by considering separate time profiles. The faults, which could be incipient or abrupt, are modeled using input and output signals of the system. By using nonlinear estimation techniques, the discrete-time system is monitored online. Once a fault is detected, its dynamics are characterized using an online approximator. A stable parameter update law is developed for the online approximator scheme in discrete-time. The …

Mesoscale Dispersive Flux In The Lower Reaches Of The Elizabeth River Estuary, Byron Danrich Tracy Oct 2008

Mesoscale Dispersive Flux In The Lower Reaches Of The Elizabeth River Estuary, Byron Danrich Tracy

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Congress has mandated under Section 303(d) of the Clean Water Act that Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDL's) be established for impaired water bodies to further identify and regulate their waste assimilative capacity. To establish a TMDL, the sources of waste loading or pollutants must be identified, and a method of determining how each should be limited or removed must be developed. Using a water quality model is a typical method for determining these limits, and since new or changed limits will likely impact local businesses and government budgets, the model must be accurate. For most tidal systems larger than small …

A Systematic Study On Structural And Optical Properties In Conjugated Polymer Photovoltaic Devices, Sri Sabarinadh Sunkavalli

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Conjugated polymer/fullerene based solar cells represent an exciting alternative to inorganic ones because of their low production costs, flexibility and low weight. At present, commercialization of organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells is limited due to their relatively low efficiency in comparison to silicon ones. In order to understand the operation of OPV cells and to increase their efficiency, more information about the structure of the absorber layer is needed. In particular, the connection between structure and properties of the absorber layer is of great importance. Performance of bulk heterojunction organic solar cells based on poly (3-hexylthiophene) as donor and a soluble …

Parameter Estimation Of The Arterial System, James Charles Carter Ii Oct 2008

Parameter Estimation Of The Arterial System, James Charles Carter Ii

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

There are a number of disorders that originate from or involve faulty operation of the cardiovascular system. Diseases such as atherosclerosis, diabetes and hypertension can have a debilitating effect on blood flow. This makes the tools for simulating the effects of such diseases on blood flow important. Measures, such as pulse wave velocity, that are generated by models of the cardiovascular system can be important indicators of cardiac health. Although physically measurable, obtaining some parameters comes with a high cost and discomfort to the patient. Models can provide an assessment of many important parameters. The purpose of this project was …

A Markov Based Model For Maintenance And Repair Of Equipment, Deepa Jaishankar Oct 2008

A Markov Based Model For Maintenance And Repair Of Equipment, Deepa Jaishankar

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The failure repair process of a continuously operating device is studied in this research. Different cases that incorporate modeling of equipment deterioration, inspection, and maintenance for optimal maintenance policy are proposed. Markov processes are used to determine state probabilities, and the optimal value of the mean time to preventive maintenance is determined by maximizing the availability of the equipment with respect to the mean time preventive maintenance. The approach uses models that assume that equipment can fail due to both deterioration and random failures. Preventive maintenance can be performed from each working state to avoid deterioration failure. Economic effects are …

Experimental Study Of The Frequency Response Of A Hot Film Anemometer, Ashish Tamhane Oct 2008

Experimental Study Of The Frequency Response Of A Hot Film Anemometer, Ashish Tamhane

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This endeavor was motivated by the need to accurately quantify wind tunnel turbulence, a component of flow quality. The use of spheres and cones to find a turbulence correction factor has been mentioned in the literature but these methods are indirect approaches. To measure the amplitude and spectra of the velocity fluctuations, the hot wire anemometer is the only reliable instrument. A fiber-film sensor, which is similar in operation but with more mechanical rigidity, may be preferred over a hot wire owing to its robustness. In this work, the frequency response characteristics of the hot fiber-film sensor are studied.

The …

Assessment Of Axially-Loaded Pile Dynamic Design Methods And Review Of Indot Axially-Loaded Pile Design Procedure, Dimitrios Loukidis, Rodrigo Salgado, Grace Abou-Jaoude

JTRP Technical Reports

The general aim of the present research is to identify areas of improvement and propose changes in the current methodologies followed by INDOT for design of axially loaded piles, with special focus on the dynamic analysis of pile driving. Interviews with INDOT geotechnical engineers and private geotechnical consultants frequently involved in INDOT’s deep foundation projects provided information on the methods and software currently employed. It was found that geotechnical engineers rely on static unit soil resistance equations that were developed over twenty years ago and that have a relatively large degree of empiricism. Updated and improved static design equations recently …

Evaluation Of Performance And Design Of Ultra-Thin Whitetopping (Bonded Concrete Resurfacing) Using Large-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing, Scott Newbolds, Jan Olek Oct 2008

Evaluation Of Performance And Design Of Ultra-Thin Whitetopping (Bonded Concrete Resurfacing) Using Large-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing, Scott Newbolds, Jan Olek

JTRP Technical Reports

Ultra-Thin Whitetopping (UTW) is a pavement rehabilitation technique that involves the placement of a thin Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) overlay, 2 inches (50 mm) to 4 inches (100 mm) thick, over a distressed Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) pavement. Typically, the HMA pavement is milled and cleaned which helps to create a bond between the existing HMA pavement and the PCC overlay. The bond between the two layers promotes composite action of the pavement section and as a result has a direct impact on the performance of the UTW Pavement. This composite action allows for the reduced thickness in the UTW …
