Modeling Geographic Population Dispersion Utilizing Geospatial Information System Environment Agents In An Agent Based Model, Karl D. Liebert
Modeling Geographic Population Dispersion Utilizing Geospatial Information System Environment Agents In An Agent Based Model, Karl D. Liebert
Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations
New capabilities in agent based model (ABM) environments are opening the door to the creation of ABM that may incorporate high-quality, real world environment data in the form of Geospatial Information System (GIS) files . In the past, GJS environments were only possible through extensive software development efforts focused on specific model applications.
This thesis explores the value and issues of using GIS data to provide an ABM environment. It examines the ability of ABM development environments (DE) to support GIS environment data. The selected ABM DE is then used to model population behavior in an environment defined by authoritative …
Aerial And Satellite Image Processing Applications, Srinivas K. Jakkula
Aerial And Satellite Image Processing Applications, Srinivas K. Jakkula
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Aerial and satellite images are used extensively in many trip and mapping software packages, such as Google Earth etc. Aerial images differ significantly due to the variations in atmospheric clarity, atmospheric layer density, humidity, temperature, and season under which the aerial images are captured. Among the issues in effective utilization of aerial images, color tone discrepancy is the inconsistency in brightness, saturation, or color balance between images representing adjacent areas, causing adjacent areas appear significantly different that would otherwise be similar. Aenal images are also routinely used as ground textures to simulate Earth surface and 3D features on Earth in …

Investigation Of Across-Layer Modification To The Dsr Routing Protocol In Wireless Mesh Networks, Mustafa Ramadhan, Mark Davis
Investigation Of Across-Layer Modification To The Dsr Routing Protocol In Wireless Mesh Networks, Mustafa Ramadhan, Mark Davis
Conference papers
This work introduces a cross-layer modification to the DSR protocol that increases the global throughput in wireless mesh networks. In our modified DSR protocol we have introduced the Access Efficiency metric as an alternative to the hop-count metric in order to improve the route selection mechanism. The selected path in the route selection mechanism is identified by choosing the path with the highest minimum Access Efficiency value. We have employed the OPNET modeller as a simulator to examine two different patterns of traffic for a series of randomly generated network topologies. Each topology was simulated twice. One simulation used the …

Conference papers
In recent years, Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) have emerged as a promising solution to provide low cost networks that extend Internet access and other networking services. Mesh routers form the backbone connectivity through cooperative routing in an often unstable wireless medium. Therefore, the techniques used to monitor and manage the performance metrics to help optimize the link performance in WMNs. This paper presents an assessment of the correlation between passive monitoring and active probing techniques used for link performance measurement in WMNs. This paper presents an assessment of the correlation between passive monitoring and active probing techniques used for link …
Effects Of Lline Rate On Vvideo Qos Over Wireless Networks: An Experimental Approach, Stuart Wallace, Mark Davis
Effects Of Lline Rate On Vvideo Qos Over Wireless Networks: An Experimental Approach, Stuart Wallace, Mark Davis
Conference papers
Video streaming over Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANS) is becoming an increasingly popular service. However, end user OoS is highly influenced by many factors. These include the video codec used, the packetization scheme, error concealment and correction techniques, the complexity of the video, propagation losses, and the line rate. In this paper the effect of the line rate on the capacity of the network when streaming multimedia content is analyzed experimentally. It is shown that as the line rate decreases the bandwidth load of the video stream dramatically increases leading to poor QoS at the client side. As automatic line …

This course is concerned with the techniques of designing and constructing large programs. Some of the required basic concepts necessarily have to be developed using small programs as examples. To this extent we also study programming-in-the-small. The overall objectives are to present an overview of issues in the development of sot1ware, to discuss terminology, to illustrate via example case studies, and to give sufficiently detailed advice on how to develop quality software. Hands-on experience is emphasized through the use of homework and a class project.

This article presents a high-bandwidth control design suitable for precision motion instrumentation. Iterative learning control (ILC), a feedforward technique that uses previous iterations of the desired trajectory, is used to leverage the repetition that occurs in many tasks, such as raster scanning in microscopy. Two ILC designs are presented. The first design uses the motion system dynamic model to maximize bandwidth. The second design uses a time-varying bandwidth that is particularly useful for nonsmooth trajectories such as raster scanning. Both designs are applied to a multiaxis piezoelectric-actuated flexure system and evaluated on a nonsmooth trajectory. The ILC designs demonstrate significant …

Volume Effects On Yield Strength Of Equine Cortical Bone, R. F. Bigley, J. C. Gibeling, S. M. Stover, S. J. Hazelwood, D. P. Fyhrie, R. B. Martin
Biomedical Engineering
Volume effects are a fundamental determinant of structural failure. A material exhibits a volume effect if its failure properties are dependent on the specimen volume. Many brittle ceramics exhibit volume effects due to loading a structure in the presence of “critical” flaws. The number of flaws, their locations, and the effect of stress field within the stressed volume play a role in determining the structure’s failure properties. Since real materials are imperfect, structures composed of large volumes of material have higher probabilities of containing a flaw than do small volumes. Consequently, large material volumes tend to fail at lower stresses …

Adaptive And Probabilistic Power Control Algorithms For Rfid Reader Networks, Kainan Cha, Anil Ramachandran, Jagannathan Sarangapani
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In radio frequency identification (RFID) systems, the detection range and read rates will suffer from interference among high power reading devices. This problem grows severely and degrades system performance in dense RFID networks. Consequently, medium access protocols (MAC) protocols are needed for such networks to assess and provide access to the channel so that tags can be read accurately. In this paper, we investigate a suite of feasible power control schemes to ensure overall coverage area of the system while maintaining a desired read rate. The power control scheme and MAC protocol dynamically adjusts the RFID reader power output in …
A New Walking Pattern Svm Technique For Five-Phase Motor Drives, Jing Huang, Keith Corzine
A New Walking Pattern Svm Technique For Five-Phase Motor Drives, Jing Huang, Keith Corzine
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
As multi-phase motor drives become more popular and practical, new research in this area investigates potential advantages including lower torque ripple and better power density. The added dimensions of a multi-phase machine leads to a completely different operating nature than standard three-phase machines and merits research into new modulation methods. The five-phase and six-phase machines have been traditionally studied in the literature applying voltage-source modulation methods such as sine-triangle modulation and space- vector modulation for current harmonic elimination. Recent research of five-phase induction motor drives addressed nearest three vectors switching; which adds current harmonics but lowers torque ripple and considerably …

Analysis Of Noise Coupling From Printed Circuit Board To Shielding Enclosure, Zhenwei Yu, Xiaopeng Dong, Jason A. Mix, Kevin P. Slattery, Jun Fan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The power distribution network in a printed circuit board (PCB) inside a compact-size enclosure is an effective path for high-speed digital noise to be coupled to the RF receivers inside the same enclosure, causing RF interference (RFI) issues. This noise coupling mechanism from PCB to shielding enclosure is investigated in this paper using the cavity model and the segmentation technique. In this approach, the structure of an enclosure with a PCB inside is divided into cavities with both horizontal and vertical connections. Modeling result agrees well with full wave simulations, and the simulation time is considerably reduced. Furthermore, the relationship …

Some of these techniques require fast floating-point calculations that are now possible in real-time on the PLC. This paper focuses on the …
Joint Adaptive Distributed Rate And Power Control For Wireless Networks, James W. Fonda, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Steve Eugene Watkins
Joint Adaptive Distributed Rate And Power Control For Wireless Networks, James W. Fonda, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Steve Eugene Watkins
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A novel adaptive distributed rate and power control (ADRPC) protocol is introduced for wireless networks. The proposed controller contrasts from others by providing nonlinear compensation to the problem of transmission power and bit-rate adaptation. The protocol provides control of both signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) and quality-of-service (QoS) support to bit-rate adaptation. Bit-rate adaptation is performed by local estimation of congestion levels, rendering little packet overhead, using Lyapunov based adaptive control methods. Performance of the proposed control scheme is shown through analytical proof and simulation examples.

Novel Dynamic Representation And Control Of Power Networks Embedded With Facts Devices, Shahab Mehraeen, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Mariesa Crow
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
FACTS devices have been shown to be powerful in damping power system oscillations caused by faults; however, in the multi machine control using FACTS, the control problem involves solving differential-algebraic equations of a power network which renders the available control schemes ineffective due to heuristic design and lack of know how to incorporate FACTS into the network. A method to generate nonlinear dynamic representation of a power system consisting of differential equations alone with universal power flow controller (UPFC) is introduced since differential equations are typically preferred for controller development. Subsequently, backstepping methodology is utilized to reduce the generator oscillations …
