Methods To Prioritize Placement Of Riparian Buffers For Improved Water Quality, M. D. Tomer, Michael G. Dosskey, Michael R. Burkart, Matthew J. Helmers, Dean E. Eisenhauer

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Agroforestry buffers in riparian zones can improve stream water quality, provided they intercept and remove contaminants from surface runoff and/or shallow groundwater. Soils, topography, surficial geology, and hydrology determine the capability of forest buffers to intercept and treat these flows. This paper describes two landscape analysis techniques for identifying and mapping locations where agroforestry buffers can effectively improve water quality. One technique employs soil survey information to rank soil map units for how effectively a buffer, when sited on them, would trap sediment from adjacent cropped fields. Results allow soil map units to be compared for relative effectiveness of buffers …

Developing Subgrade Inputs For Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design, Meagan Berlau May 2008

Developing Subgrade Inputs For Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design, Meagan Berlau

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The Resilient Modulus (MR) of a subgrade soil is an essential input into the flexible pavement design models contained in the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Official’s new pavement design guide, the MechanisticEmpirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG). For most inputs required for pavement design, there are three levels of input that can be used within the MEPDG system. Level One requires the engineer to enter a value for subgrade Resilient Modulus based on the results of Resilient Modulus tests conducted in the laboratory. Level Two allows the user to input values for other soil property tests including California …

Location-Based Hashing For Querying And Searching, Felix Ching May 2008

Location-Based Hashing For Querying And Searching, Felix Ching

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The rapidly growing information technology in modern days demands an efficient searching scheme to search for desired data. Locality Sensitive Hashing (LSH) is a method for searching similar data in a database. LSH achieves high accuracy and precision for locating desired data, but consumes a significant amount of memory and time. Based on LSH, this thesis presents two novel schemes for efficient and accurate data searching: Locality Sensitive Hashing-SmithWaterman (LSH-SmithWaterman) and Secure Min-wise Locality Sensitive Hashing (SMLSH). Both methods dramatically reduce the memory and time consumption and exhibit high accuracy in data searching. Simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of the …

Visualization Of An Approach To Data Clustering, Marisabel Guevara May 2008

Visualization Of An Approach To Data Clustering, Marisabel Guevara

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Using visualization and clustering goals as guidelines, this thesis explores a graphic implementation of a data clustering technique that repositions vertices by applying physical laws of charges and springs to the components of the graph. The resulting visualizations are evidence of the success of the approach as well as of the data sets that lend themselves to a clustering routine. Due to the visual product of the implementation, the algorithm is most useful as an aid in understanding the grouping pattern of a data set. Either for a rapid analysis or to assist in presentation, the visual result of the …

Measurement Of Absolute Argon Excited State Populations And Electron Energy Distribution Functions In An Ar-A-Si Plasma, Katherine Herring May 2008

Measurement Of Absolute Argon Excited State Populations And Electron Energy Distribution Functions In An Ar-A-Si Plasma, Katherine Herring

Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Deposition systems utilizing plasma are used for a variety of tasks, including tool coatings and creating thin-film materials. In order to have repeatable results, the internal conditions of a plasma chamber need to be known. This project centered on the use of data from optical emissions and a Langmuir probe from an argon plasma amorphous silicon depositing system. An electron energy distribution function (EEDF) was obtained from manipulation of the Langmuir probe data. This EEDF was then input to an argon collisional-radiative model (CRM) to obtain the electron population of the 4p level of the argon plasma. Through an absolute …

New Orleans And Hurricane Katrina. Iii: The 17th Street Drainage Canal, R. B. Seed, R. G. Bea, A. Athanasopoulos-Zekkos, G. P. Boutwell, J. D. Bray, C. Cheung, D. Cobos-Roa, L. F. Harder, Jr., Robb E.S. Moss, J. M. Pestana, M. F. Riemer, J. D. Rogers, R. Storesund, X. Vera-Grunauer, J. Wartman

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The failure of the levee and floodwall section on the east bank of the 17th Street drainage canal was one of the most catastrophic breaches that occurred during Hurricane Katrina. It produced a breach that rapidly scoured a flow pathway below sea level, so that after the storm surge had largely subsided, floodwaters still continued to stream in through this breach for the next two and a half days. This particular failure contributed massively to the overall flooding of the Metropolitan Orleans East Bank protected basin. Slightly more than half of the loss of life, and a similar fraction of …

Exploration Of Crash Prone Traffic Conditions On Freeways In The Netherlands Using Random Forests, Mohamed Abdel-Aty, Anurag Pande, Abhishek Das, Wiilem Jan Knibbe

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Underground loop detectors are one of the most common traffic surveillance apparatus on freeways. Traffic data obtained from these detectors are used for various ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) applications such as travel time estimation and incident detection. In the recent past, however, researchers have been interested in proactive applications of these data. These proactive applications primarily involve real-time crash risk assessment based on analysis of traffic surveillance data observed prior to historical crashes. In this study, we have analyzed the crash data from five freeway sections in the Utrecht region of the Netherlands to identify the traffic conditions significantly associated …

Evaluating Route Diversion As A Strategy For Reduction Of Real-Time Crash Risk On Freeways Using Microscopic Simulation, Vikash V. Gayah, Mohamed Abdel-Aty, Anurag Pande May 2008

Evaluating Route Diversion As A Strategy For Reduction Of Real-Time Crash Risk On Freeways Using Microscopic Simulation, Vikash V. Gayah, Mohamed Abdel-Aty, Anurag Pande

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The objective of this study is to evaluate route diversion as a strategy for reducing crash risk on freeways using Microsimulation. Traffic simulation environment provides the 'loop detector data' which in turn are the inputs to the models used for real-time crash risk estimation. It has been found that rear-end crashes are more accurately described as occurring within one of two distinct traffic regimes. Hence, the crash risk estimates for rear-end crashes belonging to Regime 1 and Regime 2 are output posterior probabilities from two different models which are not directly comparable. A method was proposed to transform the output …

A Comparison Of Nondestructive Testing Backcalculation Techniques For Rigid And Flexible Pavements, Trenton Ellis May 2008

A Comparison Of Nondestructive Testing Backcalculation Techniques For Rigid And Flexible Pavements, Trenton Ellis

Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

In designing new pavements, engineers rely on many different measures to characterize the average traffic, climate and soil conditions of the region. Of those, soil conditions are the most elusive, but are also the most crucial for designing a pavement of proper thickness and stiffness. This problem is compounded when the design is for an overlay instead of a new pavement. For overlay designs, engineers require a quantitative characterization of the strength of the existing pavement as well as the underlying soil. Especially for new Mechanistic-Empirical design procedures, direct measures and/or estimates of pavement stiffness are essential inputs. A variety …

Pitch Correction On The Human Voice, Suzanne Ownbey May 2008

Pitch Correction On The Human Voice, Suzanne Ownbey

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Singing is an excellent way to achieve fame, granted one can sing on key. Alternatively, a person who does not inherently have this ability or want to spend the time practicing to achieve it could use a programmatic solution to pitch correction. Proprietary products already exist that can correct the pitch of a singer, but the average mediocre singer may not be willing or able to purchase them. The focus of this research is to use the basic frequency altering algorithm of resampling, which alters the length of the wave to correct the pitch of a note. Small parts of …

Multiuav2 Agent Swarming For Distributed Atr Simulation, Kyle White May 2008

Multiuav2 Agent Swarming For Distributed Atr Simulation, Kyle White

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Traditional automatic target recognition (ATR) is performed by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) depending on a central control tower to provide the high level organization of the system. The UAVs fly through a region of interest to identify targets and relay all communication through a central control tower. The centralized approach to ATR has limited fault-tolerance, scalability with regards to the number of UAVs, and susceptibility to malicious attacks on the central tower [2]. A swarm-driven alternative [1] is extended with a communication control scheme to address fault-tolerance and scalability while utilizing the higher onboard processing power now available for UAVs …

Hydrogen Production Through The Process Of Electrolysis Can Benefit Fuel Conservation In Automobiles, Wade D. Stahr

Graduate Research Papers

Every day over 8.5 million barrels of gasoline are consumed in America alone. Since fuel prices have skyrocketed there is more need than ever for a fuel-conserving device that the public can use in any automobile and will result in true savings both financially and environmentally. Many people and organizations have talked about an all hydrogen-powered vehicle; while this is a wonderful concept, the actuality of it happening throughout the entire country is less that probable. Due to many factors, mainly financial, the use of hydrogen to power vehicles on a mass scale could take many years to incorporate. However, …

Hypoelastic Modeling Of Reinforced Concrete Walls, Mohsen A. Shayanfar, Amir Safiey May 2008

Hypoelastic Modeling Of Reinforced Concrete Walls, Mohsen A. Shayanfar, Amir Safiey

Publications

This paper presents a new hypoelasticity model which was implemented in a nonlinear finite element formulation to analyze reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The model includes a new hypoelasticity constitutive relationship utilizing the rotation of material axis through successive iterations. The model can account for high nonlinearity of the stress-strain behavior of the concrete in the pre-peak regime, the softening behavior of the concrete in the post-peak regime and the irrecoverable volume dilatation at high levels of compressive load. This research introduces the modified version of the common application orthotropic stress-strain relation developed by Darwin and Pecknold. It is endeavored not …

Trichoderma reesei is the main industrial source of cellulases and hemicellulases used to depolymerize biomass to simple sugars that are converted to chemical intermediates and biofuels, such as ethanol. We assembled 89 scaffolds (sets of ordered and oriented contigs) to generate 34 Mbp of nearly contiguous T. reesei genome sequence comprising 9,129 predicted gene models. Unexpectedly, considering the industrial utility and effectiveness of the carbohydrate-active enzymes of T. reesei, its genome encodes fewer cellulases and hemicellulases than any other sequenced fungus able to hydrolyze plant cell wall polysaccharides. Many T. reesei genes encoding carbohydrate-active enzymes are distributed nonrandomly in …

All Elephants Are Bigger Than All Mice, Sebastian Rudolph, Markus Krotzsch, Pascal Hitzler May 2008

All Elephants Are Bigger Than All Mice, Sebastian Rudolph, Markus Krotzsch, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

We investigate the concept product as an expressive feature for description logics (DLs). While this construct allows us to express an arguably very common and natural type of statement, it can be simulated only by the very expressive DL SROIQ for which no tight worst-case complexity is known. However, we show that concept products can also be added to the DLs SHOIQ and SHOI, and to the tractable DL EL++ without increasing the worst-case complexities in any of those cases. We therefore argue that concept products provide practically relevant expressivity at little cost, making them a good candidate …

Modeling Of Thermodynamically Coupled Reaction-Transport Systems, Yaşar Demirel May 2008

Modeling Of Thermodynamically Coupled Reaction-Transport Systems, Yaşar Demirel

Yaşar Demirel Publications

Nonisothermal reaction-diffusion systems control the behavior of many transport and rate processes in physical, chemical and biological systems, such as pattern formation and chemical pumps. Considerable work has been published on mathematically coupled nonlinear differential equations by neglecting thermodynamic coupling between a chemical reaction and transport processes of mass and heat. This study presents the modeling of thermodynamically coupled system of a simple elementary chemical reaction with molecular heat and mass transport. The thermodynamic coupling refers that a flow occurs without or against its primary thermodynamic driving force, which may be a gradient of temperature or chemical potential or reaction …

Application-Motivated Combinations Of Fuzzy, Interval, And Probability Approaches, And Their Use In Geoinformatics, Bioinformatics, And Engineering, Vladik Kreinovich May 2008

Application-Motivated Combinations Of Fuzzy, Interval, And Probability Approaches, And Their Use In Geoinformatics, Bioinformatics, And Engineering, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Most data processing techniques traditionally used in scientific and engineering practice are statistical. These techniques are based on the assumption that we know the probability distributions of measurement errors etc. In practice, often, we do not know the distributions, we only know the bound D on the measurement accuracy - hence, after the get the measurement result X, the only information that we have about the actual (unknown) value x of the measured quantity is that x belongs to the interval [X - D, X + D]. Techniques for data processing under such interval uncertainty are called interval computations; these …

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Tribofilms generated in wear tests using lubricants containing fluorinated ZDDP and ZDDP were studied. Fluorinated ZDDP demonstrated superior wear performance compared to ZDDP under tribological conditions even at lower phosphorus levels. Chemical properties and the molecular structure of the fluorinated ZDDP were examined and presented in a previous companion study by Parekh and Aswath [1] using techniques such as NMR and DSC while this study examines the tribological behavior of this compound and the characteristics of the tribofilms formed by it. Ball on cylinder tribological tests were conducted with lubricants containing this new fluorinated thiophosphate compound and compared to lubricants …

A Study Of The Antiwear Behavior And Oxidation Stability Of Fluorinated Zinc Dialkyl Dithio Phosphate In The Presence Of Antioxidants, Anuradha Somayaji May 2008

A Study Of The Antiwear Behavior And Oxidation Stability Of Fluorinated Zinc Dialkyl Dithio Phosphate In The Presence Of Antioxidants, Anuradha Somayaji

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The antiwear additive Zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate (ZDDP) is one of the most important components of engine-oil additives and a major source of phosphorus. Phosphorus plays a crucial part in mitigating engine wear, yet has been proven harmful to modern catalytic converters. Progressive regulatory caps on phosphorus content in automotive lubricants have led to widespread efforts to reduce its levels. A new fluorinated ZDDP (F-ZDDP) complex developed at the University of Texas at Arlington has found to breakdown at lower temperatures compared to ZDDP and has showed better wear performance than ZDDP alone. This would allow the possibility of further …

Trajectory design and optimization has a broad variety of applications in fields such as aerospace and electrical engineering. The solution of a trajectory that minimizes a cost function subject to nonlinear differential equations of motion and various types of constraints may be obtained by the methods of optimal control theory. A framework is presented for numerical solution of the optimal control problem. The solution is converted to that of a constrained discrete parameter optimization problem. Direct collocation and nonlinear programming are used to perform a local gradient-based search for the optimal solution. A genetic algorithm combined with a shooting method …

Regenerative Peripheral Neurointerfacing Of Upper Extremity Prostheses, Kshitija Garde May 2008

Regenerative Peripheral Neurointerfacing Of Upper Extremity Prostheses, Kshitija Garde

Bioengineering Theses - Archive

Current robotic prosthetic devices provide limited functionality to the user as they rely on gross myogenic control and lack critical sensory feedback needed for fine movement control. Interfacing the nervous system with the robotic prosthesis would facilitate amputees to control them naturally, in resemblance to the human hand. Functional neuro-electrode connections have been demonstrated in the brain and peripheral nervous system; however, gliosis, micro hemorrhages, axonopathy and excessive inflammation limit their long-term use. We evaluated the possibility of enticing peripheral nerve regeneration through a multi-electrode array with an open architecture as an alternative to enhance longevity of nerve-electrode interface. Regenerative …

Computational Method For Solving Spoke Dynamics On High Speed Rolling Tweel, Kranti Kiran Manga May 2008

Computational Method For Solving Spoke Dynamics On High Speed Rolling Tweel, Kranti Kiran Manga

All Theses

Extensive studies have been conducted in the past to show that the characteristics of a non-pneumatic structure, the TweelTM are the same as the pneumatic tires. These characteristics include low contact pressure, low stiffness, low energy loss from obstacle impacts, low mass, and high load-carrying capacity. The TweelTM consists of a ring shaped shear beam comprised of two inextensible membranes separated by a relatively low modulus elastic material. This shear beam is connected to the hub by thin elastic spokes.
When used for high speed rolling applications, the TweelTM produces unacceptably high levels of acoustic noise. It has been suggested …

Heterogeneity Of Molecular Structure Of Ag Photo-Diffused Ge30Se70 Thin Films, Mingji Jin, Punit Boolchand, Maria Mitkova

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Silver photodiffusion in thin Ge30Se70 films is investigated in order to understand the structure forming in the Ge-Se host after introduction of Ag in it. Optical micrographs point towards formation of homogeneous films after deposition of the Ge-Se material on glass substrate. This structure changes and occurrence of heterogeneous regions is imaged after Ag is introduced into the Ge-Se host. Raman spectroscopy provides data about the development of the structural organization in the host in depth. It confirms that while the initial non-doped films are organized in a structure corresponding to the bulk material with analogous composition, …
