Channel-Access And Routing Protocols To Utilize Multiple Heterogeneous Channels For Ad Hoc Networks, Crystal Jackson Jun 2008

Channel-Access And Routing Protocols To Utilize Multiple Heterogeneous Channels For Ad Hoc Networks, Crystal Jackson

All Theses

In this thesis, we consider a multi-channel ad hoc network employing frequency-agile radios that utilize direct-sequence spread-spectrum signaling. Two of the key distributed protocols for this type of network control channel access and routing. The channel-access protocol is responsible for controlling access to the channels available to the terminals in the network, and the routing protocol determines how packets are forwarded among the terminals in the network. To achieve reliable and efficient network performance, these protocols should cooperate with one another and take advantage of the multiple channels available to the network.
In this thesis, we investigate a number of …

The Electrical Characterization Of Tantalum Capacitors As Mis Devices, Brian Holman Jun 2008

The Electrical Characterization Of Tantalum Capacitors As Mis Devices, Brian Holman

All Theses

Electrical characteristics of a new class of tantalum capacitor are presented. Specifically, this type of tantalum capacitor is manufactured by KEMET Electronics Corporation and utilizes Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiolphene) (PEDOT) as the cathode material. There are two capacitor varieties based on the polymerization method used for the PEDOT. One uses In-Situ polymerization, and the other uses Pre-Polymerization. Existing polymer Ta capacitors use In-Situ polymerization while Pre-Polymerization is a new technique of cathode application. We investigated both types of devices to determine what, if any, performance benefits were gained by using Pre-Poly.
In a basic form Ta capacitors consist of a Ta anode, Ta2O5 …

The Four-Domain Development Diagram: A Tool For Designing Development-Centered Teaching, Linda Vanasupa, Trevor S. Harding, William L. Hughes Jun 2008

The Four-Domain Development Diagram: A Tool For Designing Development-Centered Teaching, Linda Vanasupa, Trevor S. Harding, William L. Hughes

Materials Engineering

Research in education has brought to light the complexity of the learning process, demonstrating that students' development is influenced by a myriad of cultural and social factors, as well as the environment in which learning takes place. Engineering curricula, however, are primarily focused on teaching content knowledge, often resulting in a gap between what is taught and what is learned. We propose that shifting some of the focus onto the process of learning that occurs within the student and leveraging multiple known connections from educational psychology can result in more effective engineering education. Here we define “effective” engineering education as …

How Accurate Is Students’ Self Assessment Of Computer Skills?, Michael A. Collura, Samuel Bogan Daniels Jun 2008

How Accurate Is Students’ Self Assessment Of Computer Skills?, Michael A. Collura, Samuel Bogan Daniels

Engineering and Applied Science Education Faculty Publications

Self-evaluation by students is commonly used as a key element in program and course assessment plans. Such instruments are intended to provide crucial feedback for program improvement and thus play a significant role in closing our assessment loop. For many of the program outcomes, self-assessment by current students and graduates augments other, more objective measures. However, for some outcomes there are no practical means of obtaining objective assessment and we must rely on self-assessment. The heavy reliance on this metric begs the question “How accurate is student self-assessment?” This paper provides data from a second-semester engineering course in which students …

The Party’S Over: Sustaining Support Programs When The Funding Is Done, John Gardner, Pat Pyke, Cheryl Schrader, Janet M. Callahan, Amy Moll

Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the lifecycle of an engineering education grant, the phase where best practices are sustained and disseminated is perhaps the most crucial stage for maximizing impact. Yet this transition phase often receives the least attention as project team enthusiasm can wane, while funding tapers off, and faculty priorities are pulled in other directions. There are numerous obstacles associated with sustaining program changes, even those perceived as very valuable. Typical challenges are: What happens when the funding runs out? What grant-developed programs should be sustained by the university? Does the institution need to internally allocate resources in an annual budget large …

Biomedical Engineering

Recent research has suggested that endothelialization of vascular stents is crucial to reducing the risk of late stent thrombosis. With a resolution of approximately 10 μm, optical coherence tomography (OCT) may be an appropriate imaging modality for visualizing the vascular response to a stent and measuring the percentage of struts covered with an anti-thrombogenic cellular lining. We developed an image analysis program to locate covered and uncovered stent struts in OCT images of tissue-engineered blood vessels. The struts were found by exploiting the highly reflective and shadowing characteristics of the metallic stent material. Coverage was evaluated by comparing the luminal …

An Exploration Of A Discrete Rhombohedral Lattice Of Possible Engineering Or Physical Relevance, Jim Mcgovern Jun 2008

An Exploration Of A Discrete Rhombohedral Lattice Of Possible Engineering Or Physical Relevance, Jim Mcgovern

Conference Papers

A particular discrete rhombohedral lattice consisting of four symmetrically interlaced cuboctahedral or cubic point lattices is described that is interesting because of the high degree of symmetry it exhibits. The four constituent lattices are denoted by four colours and the composite lattice is referred to as a 4-colour rhombohedral lattice. Each point of the 4-colour lattice can be referenced by an integer 4-tuple containing only the positive non-zero integers (the counting numbers). The relationship between the discrete rhombohedral lattice and a discrete Cartesian lattice is explained. Some interesting aspects of the lattice and of the counting-number 4-tuple coordinate system are …

Material Perturbations To Enhance Performance Of The Theile Half-Width Leaky Mode Antenna, Jason A. Girard

Theses and Dissertations

Microstrip traveling-wave antennas, often referred to as leaky-wave antennas, have been shown to radiate when the dominant or fundamental mode is suppressed and the first higher-order mode is excited. One such microstrip variation is the Thiele Half-Width (THW) antenna, which operates from 5.9 - 8.2 GHz for this research. Increasing the bandwidth over which the THW antenna radiates is desired, as is a fundamental understanding of the propagation characteristics over this region. This dissertation seeks to vary or perturb the material and physical properties of the THW antenna, including strip-width variations and modifications of the substrate layer, to achieve these …
