Optimization Constrained Cad Framework With Iso-Performing Design Generator, Kelly Eric Bowman Aug 2008

Optimization Constrained Cad Framework With Iso-Performing Design Generator, Kelly Eric Bowman

Theses and Dissertations

Design decisions have a large impact early in the design process. Optimization methods can help engineers improve their early decision making, however, design problems are often ill-posed for optimization at this early stage. This thesis develops engineering methods to use optimization during embodiment design, despite these difficulties. One common difficulty in designing mechanical systems is in handling the effects that design changes in one subsystem have on another. This is made more difficult in early engineering design, when design information is preliminary. Increased efforts have been made to use numerical optimization methods in early engineering design – because of the …

Face And Lip Localization In Unconstrained Imagery, Brandon Crow, Jane Zhang Aug 2008

Face And Lip Localization In Unconstrained Imagery, Brandon Crow, Jane Zhang

Electrical Engineering

When combined with acoustical speech information, visual speech information (lip movement) significantly improves Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) in acoustically noisy environments. Previous research has demonstrated that visual modality is a viable tool for identifying speech. However, the visual information has yet to become utilized in mainstream ASR systems due to the difficulty in accurately tracking lips in real-world conditions. This paper presents our current progress in addressing this issue. We derive several algorithms based on a modified HSI color space to successfully locate the face, eyes, and lips. These algorithms are then tested over imagery collected in visually challenging environments.

Partial Crystallinity In Alkyl Side Chain Polymers Dictates Surface Freezing, Shishir Prasad, Zhang Jiang, Sunil K. Sinha, Ali Dhinojwala Aug 2008

Partial Crystallinity In Alkyl Side Chain Polymers Dictates Surface Freezing, Shishir Prasad, Zhang Jiang, Sunil K. Sinha, Ali Dhinojwala

College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

We have studied the structure of a novel crystalline surface monolayer on top of a disordered melt of the same material [poly(n-alkyl acrylate)s] using grazing incidence x-ray diffraction. The grazing incidence x-ray diffraction, surface tension, and bulk latent heat results show that side chains crystallize except the nine methylene units of the alkyl side chains closest to the polymer backbone. The partial crystallinity along with a thicker surface layer, due to the additional length of the linker group, explains why the difference between the surface order-to-disorder transition temperature and bulk melting temperature increases with a decrease in the length of …

Spatially Resolved Optical Absorption Spectrometry And Single Crystal Diffraction On Metamict Materials, Alison Savage, Oliver Tschauner, Sergey Tkachev

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

A major goal in developing storage medium for radioactive waste is the identification of chemically suitable and durable material for storage in repositories (Lumpkin 2006). Radiation damage induces enhanced chemical diffusion and structural breakdown of the host materials, which can lead to contamination of the surrounding environment. During this project four different naturally occurring materials which are common carriers of thorium and uranium were examined : gadolinite, perrierite, allanite, and pyrochlore of which the first three are silicates and pyrochlore being an oxide. Their spectra and absorptions bands were examined to identify prominent features due to radiation damage. The goal …

Computational Studies Of H2, O2, And Co Adsorption On Pt And Pt-Ru Catalyst Clusters For Hydrogen Fuel Cell Applications, Huy Mai, T.J. Dhilip Kumar, P. Tarakeshwar, Naduvalath Balakrishnan

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

Previous computational studies of hydrogen fuel cell catalysis primarily focus on single adsorbate and therefore do not reflect the realistic situation. Here we investigated the effect of multiple hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon monoxide adsorption on bimetallic nanoclusters as allowed by computational resources. The criteria of which we studied were adsorption energies, electron densities, electrostatic charges, and HOMO-LUMO energy gaps with respect to each structure. We found that Pt-Ru clusters have better performance than pure Pt clusters early in the adsorption course, and pure Pt clusters are more consistent than Pt-Ru clusters in a sequence of adsorbate introduction.

Raman Studies Of 1,3,5,7 Cyclooctatetraene At High Pressure, Martin Galley, Ed Romano, Sergey Tkachev, Michael Pravica

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

We performed Raman spectroscopic studies of 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene at elevated pressures up to 10 GPa with the aim of examining possible planarization of the molecule and further studying two prior-discovered phases of the solid with pressure. The Raman excitation source was a Krypton-ion laser operating at 674.1 nm (give wavelength).

1,3,5,7 Cyclooctatetraene has an octagonal formation however it is not aromatic or anti-aromatic (not a subject to the 4n+2 Huckel’s rule) [1]. As a result, its adopts a somewhat reactive tub shape. Upon the addition or removal of one to two electrons under ambient conditions, the molecule planarizes and becomes aromatic …

Structural Studies Of Crsi2 At High Pressures And Temperatures, Weldu Gabrimicael, Ravhi S. Kumar, Andrew Cornelius

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

It is of extreme importance to develop new potential energy sources to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. As a result of this, the study of thermoelectric materials, capable of changing heat into electrical energy, has become a field of great interest regarding fundamental properties. To help better understand these materials, facilities for the measurement of relevant properties at high pressure have been developed, but lack the ability to characterize the materials at high temperature and pressure. Therefore, this project has the goal of developing a heater arrangement to be used in conjunction with the high pressure capabilities already developed to …

Impact Of Climate Change On Irrigation Water Availability, Crop Water Requirements And Soil Salinity In The Sjv, Ca, Jan Hopmans, Edwin P. Maurer

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering

We examine potential regional-scale impacts of global climate change on sustainability of irrigated agriculture, focusing on the western San Joaquin Valley in California. We consider potential changes in irrigation water demand and supply, and quantify impacts on cropping patterns, groundwater pumping, groundwater levels, soil salinity, and crop yields. Our analysis is based on archived output from General Circulation Model (GCM) climate projections through 2100, which are downscaled here to the scale of the study area (~30 km across). We account for uncertainty in GCM climate projections by considering output from two different GCM's, each using three greenhouse gas emission scenarios. …

Freeform Fabrication Of Zirconium Diboride Parts Using Selective Laser Sintering, Ming-Chuan Leu, Erik B. Adamek, Tieshu Huang, Greg Hilmas, Fatih Dogan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Using the Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) process, both flexural test bars and 3D fuel injector components have been fabricated with zirconium diboride (ZrB2) powder. Stearic acid was selected as the binder. Values of SLS process parameters were chosen such that the green parts could be built with sharp geometrical features and that the sintered parts could have good mechanical properties. After binder burnout and sintering, the SLS fabricated ZrB2 test bars achieved 80% theoretical density, and the average flexural strength of the sintered samples was 195 MPa. These values demonstrate the feasibility of the SLS process for …

Direct 3d Layer Metal Deposition, Jianzhong Ruan, Lie Tang, Todd E. Sparks, Robert G. Landers, Frank W. Liou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multi-axis slicing for solid freeform fabrication (SFF) manufacturing processes can yield non-uniform thickness layers, or 3D layers. Using the traditional parallel layer construction approach to build such a layer leads to a staircase which requires machining or other post processing to form the desired shape. This paper presents a direct 3D layer deposition approach. This approach uses an empirical model to predict the layer thickness based on experimental data. The toolpath between layers is not parallel; instead, it follows the final shape of the designed geometry and the distance between the toolpath in the adjacent layers varies at different locations. …

Direct-To-Part Machining Waste Recycling Using Laser Metal Deposition, Todd E. Sparks, Frank W. Liou Aug 2008

Direct-To-Part Machining Waste Recycling Using Laser Metal Deposition, Todd E. Sparks, Frank W. Liou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Laser metal deposition typically uses metal powders as the build material of choice. The ability to reprocess waste materials using this technology would significantly reduce the material cost and cradle-to-grave energy content of parts produced using these methods. This capability will also greatly increase the utility of laser deposition, to potential industrial uses. This paper explores the usage of machining chips as an alternate source of build material. Topics covered include material handling, material preprocessing, and comparison to powder- based deposition.

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Laser Direct Metal Deposition (DMD) is an effective approach to manufacturing or repairing a range of metal components. The process is a layer-by-layer approach to building up a three dimensional solid object. The microstructure influences mechanical properties of the deposited parts. Thus, it is important to understand the microstructural features of diode laser deposited parts. This paper presents a microstructure analysis of a diode laser deposited Ti-6Al-4V onto a Ti-6Al-4V substrate. laser deposited parts. Layer-To-Layer Height Control For Laser Metal Deposition Processes, Lie Tang, Jianzhong Ruan, Todd E. Sparks, Robert G. Landers, Frank W. Liou Aug 2008

Layer-To-Layer Height Control For Laser Metal Deposition Processes, Lie Tang, Jianzhong Ruan, Todd E. Sparks, Robert G. Landers, Frank W. Liou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) height controller design methodology is presented in this paper. The height controller utilizes the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm to estimate model parameters between layers using measured temperature and track height profiles. The process model parameters for the next layer are then predicted using Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (EWMA). Using the predicted model, the powder flow rate reference profile, which will produce the desired layer height reference, is then generated using Iterative Learning Control (ILC). The model parameter estimation capability is tested using a four-layer deposition. The results demonstrate the simulation based upon estimated process …

Modeling And Experimental Results Of Concentration With Support Material In Rapid Freeze Prototyping, Frances D. Bryant, Ming-Chuan Leu Aug 2008

Modeling And Experimental Results Of Concentration With Support Material In Rapid Freeze Prototyping, Frances D. Bryant, Ming-Chuan Leu

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Ice structures with complex geometries and overhung areas are created by the Rapid Freeze Prototyping (RFP) process in a sufficiently cool environment by freezing water into ice as the main material in conjunction with a eutectic dextrose-water solution as the sacrificial support material. The supported areas in an ice structure are removed via an increase in temperature in a separate environment after the structure is completely fabricated. To understand to what extent these two materials mix during fabrication, two methods of modeling the concentration changes that occur near the interface of the main and support materials have been developed. The …

Image-Guided Raman Spectroscopic Recovery Of Canine Cortical Bone Contrast In Situ, Subhadra Srinivasan, Matthew Schulmerich, Jacqueline H. Cole, Kathryn Dooley, Jaclynn M. Kreider, Brian W. Pogue

Dartmouth Scholarship

Raman scattering provides valuable biochemical and molecular markers for studying bone tissue composition with use in predicting fracture risk in osteoporosis. Raman tomography can image through a few centimeters of tissue but is limited by low spatial resolution. X-ray computed tomography (CT) imaging can provide high-resolution image-guidance of the Raman spectroscopic characterization, which enhances the quantitative recovery of the Raman signals, and this technique provides additional information to standard imaging methods. This hypothesis was tested in data measured from Teflon tissue phantoms and from a canine limb. Image-guided Raman spectroscopy (IG-RS) of the canine limb using CT images of the …

In-Plane Photonic Transduction Of Silicon-On-Insulator Microcantilevers, Ryan Anderson, Seunghyun Kim, Gregory P. Nordin, Jong Wook Noh, Jaime Cardenas

Faculty Publications

We demonstrate an in-plane photonic transduction method for microcantilevers, which have been widely investigated for sensor applications. In our approach the microcantilever is etched to form a single mode rib waveguide. Light propagates down the microcantilever and crosses a small gap at the free end of the microcantilever, some of which is captured by an asymmetrical multimode waveguide that terminates in a Y-branch. The Y-branch outputs are used to form a differential signal that is monotonically dependent on microcantilever deflection. The measured differential signal matches simulation when microcantilever rotation is properly accounted for. The measured differential signal sensitivity is 1.4 …

Self-Encoded Spread Spectrum Synchronization And Cooperative Diversity, Kun Hua Aug 2008

Self-Encoded Spread Spectrum Synchronization And Cooperative Diversity, Kun Hua

Department of Computer Electronics and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation research concerns a novel self-encoded spread spectrum. It provides a feasible practical implementation for random spreading codes. The traditional transmit and receive PN code generators are not needed. Instead, the spreading codes are extracted from the user's information bits itself. Comparing to conventional CDMA, SESS completely abandons the use of pseudo-random spreading codes. The code variability doesn't depend on the spreading length like pseudo-random codes.

But because the self-encoded spreading sequence is random and time varying, data recovery requires that the despreading sequence be identical with the spreading sequence at the start of the transmission. Synchronization is one …

Flexural Behavior Of Reinforced Concrete Beams Strengthened With Cfrp Sheets And Epoxy Mortar, Byong Y. Bahn, Ronald S. Harichandran Aug 2008

Flexural Behavior Of Reinforced Concrete Beams Strengthened With Cfrp Sheets And Epoxy Mortar, Byong Y. Bahn, Ronald S. Harichandran

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Experiments were conducted to study the effect of using epoxy mortar patch end anchorages on the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets. More specifically, the effect of the end anchorage on strength, deflection, flexural strain, and interfacial shear stress was examined. The test results show that premature debonding failure of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with CFRP sheet can be delayed or prevented by using epoxy mortar patch end anchorages. A modified analytical procedure for evaluating the flexural capacity of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with CFRP sheets and epoxy mortar end anchorage is developed …

Towards A More Adequate Use Of Interval-Valued Fuzzy Techniques In Intelligent Control: A Fuzzy Analogue Of Unimodality, Van Nam Huynh, Vladik Kreinovich Aug 2008

Towards A More Adequate Use Of Interval-Valued Fuzzy Techniques In Intelligent Control: A Fuzzy Analogue Of Unimodality, Van Nam Huynh, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

It is known that interval-valued fuzzy sets provide a more adequate description of expert uncertainty than the more traditional "type-1" (number-valued) fuzzy techniques. In the current approaches for using interval-valued fuzzy techniques, it is usually assumed that all fuzzy sets m(x) from the interval [l(x),u(x)] are possible. In this paper, we show that it is reasonable to restrict ourselves only to fuzzy numbers m(x), i.e., "unimodal" fuzzy sets. We also describe feasible algorithms for implementing thus modified intelligent control.

Furnace Blower Electricity: National And Regional Savings Potential, Florida Solar Energy Center, Victor Franco Aug 2008

Furnace Blower Electricity: National And Regional Savings Potential, Florida Solar Energy Center, Victor Franco

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Currently, total electricity consumption of furnaces is unregulated, tested at laboratory conditions using the DOE test procedure, and is reported in the GAMA directory as varying from 76 kWh/year to 1,953 kWh/year. Furnace blowers account for about 80% of the total furnace electricity consumption and are primarily used to distribute warm air throughout the home during furnace operation as well as distribute cold air during air conditioning operation. Yet the furnace test procedure does not provide a means to calculate the electricity consumption during cooling operation or standby, which account for a large fraction of the total electricity consumption. Furthermore, …

Nightcool: A Nocturnal Radiation Cooling Concept, Florida Solar Energy Center, Danny Parker Aug 2008

Nightcool: A Nocturnal Radiation Cooling Concept, Florida Solar Energy Center, Danny Parker

FSEC Energy Research Center®

An experimental evaluation has been conducted on a night sky cooling system designed to substantially reduce space cooling needs in homes in North American climates. The system uses a sealed attic covered by a highly conductive metal roof (a roof integrated radiator) which is selectively linked by air flow to the main zone with the attic zone to provide cooling - largely during nighttime hours. Available house mass is used to store sensible cooling. Currently, the system's capability for solar dehumidification with minimal electricity input is demonstrated.

How Energy Efficient Are Modern Dishwashers?, Florida Solar Energy Center, David Hoak

FSEC Energy Research Center®

We present measurements of three recent vintage dishwashers of very different efficiencies showing that while they are substantially more efficient than older dishwashers, those tested will still use electric resistance elements for supplemental heat, even when supplied by solar water heating systems producing very hot water. We did find the DOE test results provide a reasonable guide to comparative performance, but suggest improvements that will make them more representative. We also identify a variety of influences on efficiency and performance to reduce dishwasher energy use.

Very Low Energy Homes In The United States: Perspectives On Performance From Measured Data, Florida Solar Energy Center, Danny Parker

FSEC Energy Research Center®

We present measured annual performance data from a dozen recent-vintage very low energy homes in North America. Many of the designs combine greater energy efficiency with solar electric photovoltaic power in an attempt to create Zero Energy Homes (ZEH). We also provide measured data from the first home constructed to the German Passivhaus standard in the United States. Several projects either exceeded or come very close to true net zero energy when evaluated over a year.

The data indicate that very low energy use buildings can very readily be achieved in North America. Annual energy use half that or less …

Towards A Combination Of Interval And Ellipsoid Uncertainty, Vladik Kreinovich, Arnold Neumaier, Gang Xiang

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many real-life situations, we do not know the probability distribution of measurement errors but only upper bounds on these errors. In such situations, once we know the measurement results, we can only conclude that the actual (unknown) values of a quantity belongs to some interval. Based on this interval uncertainty, we want to find the range of possible values of a desired function of the uncertain quantities. In general, computing this range is an NP-hard problem, but in a linear approximation, valid for small uncertainties, there is a linear time algorithm for computing the range. In other situations, we …

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The research effort described here was a study of factors that affect the efficiency of a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system in reading a certain type of commonly used passive RFID tag ('Squiggle' by Alien Technologies). The two sets of experiments conducted under this study focus on two response variables namely: readability and read rate. The factors in focus are distance between antenna and tags, the number and combinations of tags simultaneously read by the system and position of the tags left or right of the center of the antenna. Two separate experimental setups as explained in the following sections …
