Energy Efficiency In Cold-Weather High-End Custom Homes, Joseph R. Kearl Dec 2007

Energy Efficiency In Cold-Weather High-End Custom Homes, Joseph R. Kearl

Theses and Dissertations

Nationally, there is increasing interest in energy efficient homes due to growing energy costs and increased awareness. However, many builders haven't yet incorporated energy saving products and practices into homes. Many builders don't have the resources to evaluate available options and prefer to rely on the experiences of other builders. The purpose of this study was to create energy efficiency benchmarks for cold-weather, high-end custom homes and evaluate current building practices. A list of energy-efficient products and practices was created through a review of relevant literature. A group of expert builders was formed into a committee to help determine energy …

Experimental And Analytical Application Of The Hodd Method For The Detection Of Damage, Jacob Merkley Dec 2007

Experimental And Analytical Application Of The Hodd Method For The Detection Of Damage, Jacob Merkley

All Theses

Detecting damage location and severity in civil engineering structures has become an important research topic in the past several decades. Various non-destructive damage identification methods using dynamic properties from ambient and forced vibration have been developed. Researchers have shown that higher order derivatives of mode shapes of the 2nd and 4th order can be effective in detecting damage in civil engineering structures. Furthermore, these higher order derivatives are sensitive to small changes in global stiffness facilitating the detection of small degrees of damage.
In this study a modal analysis is performed on analytical and experimental simply supported beams using the …

Sensitivity Of Half-Cell Potential Measurements To Properties Of Concrete Bridge Decks, Thad Marshall Pinkerton Dec 2007

Sensitivity Of Half-Cell Potential Measurements To Properties Of Concrete Bridge Decks, Thad Marshall Pinkerton

Theses and Dissertations

Half-cell potential testing has been recommended as a non-destructive method for assessing the corrosion potential of reinforcing steel in concrete bridge decks. The technique is particularly useful because it can be utilized to evaluate the probability of corrosion before damage is evident at the surface of a bridge deck. The specific objective of this research was to quantify the effects of age, chloride concentration, concrete cover thickness, spatial position, temperature, and presence or condition of epoxy coating on half-cell potential measurements of concrete bridge decks typical of those in Utah. The laboratory testing associated with this research followed a full-factorial …

Formulation Of Integral Equations Using Analytic Green's Functions In Elliptic Cylindrical And Prolate Spheroidal Coordinates, Adam Schreiber Dec 2007

Formulation Of Integral Equations Using Analytic Green's Functions In Elliptic Cylindrical And Prolate Spheroidal Coordinates, Adam Schreiber

All Theses

It is desired to develop and present techniques, using analytic Green's functions in elliptic cylindrical coordinates and in prolate spheroidal coordinates, for formulating integral equations for physically practicable structures and sources. Equivalent models for two structures are introduced which serve as guides in the derivation of analytic Greens functions, comprising special functions and satisfying required boundary conditions. Expressions for needed field components are represented in terms of integrals of Greens functions times unknowns, and integral equations follow from the proper relationships among sources and field components needed to satisfy Maxwell's equations.

Adipocyte Response To Injectable Beads Engineered For Breast Tissue Reconstruction, Katherine Neser Dec 2007

Adipocyte Response To Injectable Beads Engineered For Breast Tissue Reconstruction, Katherine Neser

All Theses

It is estimated that over 150,000 patients will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2007. Patients must undergo a mastectomy or a lumpectomy to remove the cancerous tissue, but only a mastectomy allows breast reconstructive surgery. Due to the limitations of current reconstruction options, new alternatives are being explored. Injectable materials have been suggested for breast tissue reconstruction because of their versatility. Cells cultured on injectable beads form cell carriers that may be mixed with a hydrogel, resulting in a construct that may be injected through a syringe to restore normal tissue mass. This solution offers breast cancer patients …

Buffer Law And Transitional Roughness Effect In Turbulent Open-Channel Flows, Junke Guo, Pierre Y. Julien Dec 2007

Buffer Law And Transitional Roughness Effect In Turbulent Open-Channel Flows, Junke Guo, Pierre Y. Julien

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

A novel and complete velocity profile law is presented for turbulent open channel flows. The law embeds the linear law in the viscous sublayer; the quartic law due to turbulent bursting that must satisfy instantaneous mass conservation, the modified log-wake law in the outer region and the effects of wall roughness. Specifically, an arctangent law smoothly connects the linear law with the log law of the wall. Combining the arctangent law with the modified log-wake law, a continuous velocity profile is proposed for smooth boundary conditions. A complete velocity profile is obtained after subtracting a new roughness function. Finally, the …

). Size Dependency Of The Elastic Modulus Of Zno Nanowires: Surface Stress Effect, Guofeng Wang, Xiaodong Li

Faculty Publications

Relation between the elastic modulus and the diameter (D) of ZnOnanowires was elucidated using a model with the calculated ZnOsurface stresses as input. We predict for ZnOnanowires due to surface stress effect: (1) when D>20nm, the elastic modulus would be lower than the bulk modulus and decrease with the decreasing diameter, (2) when 20nm>D>2nm, the nanowires with a longer length and a wurtzite crystal structure could be mechanically unstable, and (3) when D<2nm, the elastic modulus would be higher than that of the bulk value and increase with a decrease in nanowire diameter.

Dry Stacked Surface Bonded Masonry - Structural Testing And Evaluation, Eric B. Murray Dec 2007

Dry Stacked Surface Bonded Masonry - Structural Testing And Evaluation, Eric B. Murray

Theses and Dissertations

The ENDURA block system is a dry-stack surface-bonded masonry system. Typical masonry construction uses thin-set mortar in the bed joints to provide a bearing surface for the blocks while the ENDURA system typically relies on shims and a surface bonding coat to ensure that the wall is level and plumb and to provide stability. Typical ENDURA block walls are built with the reinforcement placed eccentrically in the walls. Testing was performed on ten walls in order to determine axial capacity. The walls were ten feet high by eight feet wide. Each of the walls was built using a different configuration …

One-Dimensional Radial Flow Turbomachinery Performance Modeling, Robert John Pelton Dec 2007

One-Dimensional Radial Flow Turbomachinery Performance Modeling, Robert John Pelton

Theses and Dissertations

The Two-Element In Series (TEIS) and Two-Zone models have been used successfully for over twenty years to model test data for radial flow compressors and pumps. The models can also be used to predict the performance of new machines provided that the model inputs can be accurately specified. Unfortunately, use of the TEIS and Two-Zone models as a predictive tool has been limited because an accurate and broadly applicable method of predicting the modeling parameters, etaA, etaB, chi and d2p does not exist. Empirical models have been developed to predict the TEIS and Two-Zone modeling parameters based on a large …

Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) light traps were modified for use with light-emitting diodes (LED) and compared against a control trap (incandescent light) to determine the effectiveness of blue, green, and red lights against standard incandescent light routinely used for sand fly surveillance. Light traps were baited with dry ice and rotated through a 4 x 4 Latin square design during May, June, and July, 2006. Trapping over 12 trap nights yielded a total of 2,298 sand flies in the village of Bahrif, 6 km north of Aswan on the east bank of the Nile River in southern …

Validation Of Adaptive Aeroelastic Finite Element Program For Two Dimensional Flow Past A Suspension Bridge Girder Section Using Unstructured Grids., Shanique Murray Dec 2007

Validation Of Adaptive Aeroelastic Finite Element Program For Two Dimensional Flow Past A Suspension Bridge Girder Section Using Unstructured Grids., Shanique Murray

Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The flow around suspension bridge decks was traditionally investigated using wind tunnel experiments. Computer modeling, an alternative to wind tunnel testing is now being used to simulate the wind flow around a bridge cross section. This alternative is less expensive and takes less time compared to wind tunnel experiments. The motion of flow around a bridge deck is described by a set of partial differential equations called Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations. Flow features such as velocity, pressure and vorticity are predicted by solving these equations. These flow features are then used to compute flow parameters such as aerodynamic drag, lift and …

Computational Complexity Of Determining Which Statements About Causality Hold In Different Space-Time Models, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva Dec 2007

Computational Complexity Of Determining Which Statements About Causality Hold In Different Space-Time Models, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Causality is one of the most fundamental notions of physics. It is therefore important to be able to decide which statements about causality are correct in different models of space-time. In this paper, we analyze the computational complexity of the corresponding deciding problems. In particular, we show that: for Minkowski space-time, the deciding problem is as difficult as the Tarski's decision problem for elementary geometry, while for a natural model of primordial space-time, the corresponding decision problem is of the lowest possible complexity among all possible spacetime models.

The Development Of Regional Regression Equations For Flood Flow Estimates Of Ungauged Streams In The State Of Arkansas, Stephen Mccall

Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The objective of this project is to improve the accuracy of the peak streamflow frequency estimates in ungauged streams by using a regionalization approach and the Bulletin 17B method of flood flow analysis. The entire state will be considered one region and the final results will be compared to previous studies done in the state. The data used will be the most up-to-date available from the USGS gauging stations around the state. This includes data from gauging stations that had less than 10 years of data when the last such study was conducted by Hodge & Tasker (1995). The data …

Interval Computations And Interval-Related Statistical Techniques: Tools For Estimating Uncertainty Of The Results Of Data Processing And Indirect Measurements, Vladik Kreinovich Dec 2007

Interval Computations And Interval-Related Statistical Techniques: Tools For Estimating Uncertainty Of The Results Of Data Processing And Indirect Measurements, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, we only know the upper bound D on the (absolute value of the) measurement error d, i.e., we only know that the measurement error is located on the interval [-D,D]. The traditional engineering approach to such situations is to assume that d is uniformly distributed on [-D,D], and to use the corresponding statistical techniques. In some situations, however, this approach underestimates the error of indirect measurements. It is therefore desirable to directly process this interval uncertainty. Such "interval computations" methods have been developed since the 1950s. In this chapter, we provide a brief overview of related …

Reasons Why Mobile Telephone Conversations May Be Annoying: Considerations And Pilot Studies, Nigel Ward, Anais G. Rivera, Alejandro Vega Dec 2007

Reasons Why Mobile Telephone Conversations May Be Annoying: Considerations And Pilot Studies, Nigel Ward, Anais G. Rivera, Alejandro Vega

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Mobile telephone conversations in public places are often annoying to bystanders. Previous work has focused on the psychological and social causes for this, but has not examined the possible role of properties of the communication channel. In our paper "Do Bystanders and Dialog Participants Differ in Preferences for Telecommunications Channels?" (21st International Symposium on Human Factors in Telecommunication, 2008) we consider the possibility that a reason for the annoyance could be that bystander preferences differ from talker preferences, but conclude that this is in fact unlikely to be a major factor. This technical report provides supplemental information, specifically a broader …

Evaluation Of Current Nonlinear Static Procedures For Concrete Buildings Using Recorded Strong-Motion Data, Rakesh K. Goel, Charles Chadwell Dec 2007

Evaluation Of Current Nonlinear Static Procedures For Concrete Buildings Using Recorded Strong-Motion Data, Rakesh K. Goel, Charles Chadwell

Civil and Environmental Engineering

This study evaluates current Nonlinear Static Procedures (NSPs) specified in the FEMA356, ASCE-41, ATC-40, and FEMA-440 documents using strong-motion data from reinforced-concrete buildings. For this purpose, three-dimensional computer models of five reinforced concrete buildings – Imperial County Services Building, Sherman Oaks Commercial Building, North Hollywood Hotel, Watsonville Commercial Building, and Santa Barbara Office Building – are developed. When appropriate, springs at the building’s base are included to account for the soil-structure interaction effects. These buildings are selected because they were strongly shaken, several deformed beyond their linear-elastic range, during past earthquakes and their recorded motions are available. The recorded motions …

A Fast Image Super-Resolution Algorithm Using An Adaptive Wiener Filter, Russell C. Hardie Dec 2007

A Fast Image Super-Resolution Algorithm Using An Adaptive Wiener Filter, Russell C. Hardie

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A computationally simple super-resolution algorithm using a type of adaptive Wiener filter is proposed. The algorithm produces an improved resolution image from a sequence of low-resolution (LR) video frames with overlapping field of view. The algorithm uses subpixel registration to position each LR pixel value on a common spatial grid that is referenced to the average position of the input frames. The positions of the LR pixels are not quantized to a finite grid as with some previous techniques. The output high-resolution (HR) pixels are obtained using a weighted sum of LR pixels in a local moving window. Using a …
