Thermo-Mechanical Design Of A 100 Ghz Mmic Power Amplifier Using Flip Chip Technology, Sean Cremin
Thermo-Mechanical Design Of A 100 Ghz Mmic Power Amplifier Using Flip Chip Technology, Sean Cremin
Theses
This thesis is concerned with the thermo-mechanical design, thermal modelling and temperature profile measurement of a 100 GHz flip chip bump bonded MMIC medium power amplifier.
Flip chip mounting offers superior RF performance in terms of output power, gain, noise figure and bandwidth. The thermal challenge was to dissipate approximately two watts of DC power from the GaAs MMIC (monolithic microwave integrated circuit) through Au (gold) stud bumps which equates to less then 7% of the total surface area of the die. Infrared thermographic images confirmed that the flip chip MMIC amplifier was functional with all eight FET stages on …
Anaerobic Digestion: Decision Support Software, Marco Poliafico
Anaerobic Digestion: Decision Support Software, Marco Poliafico
Theses
Ireland has significant quantities of livestock; meat exportation is a vibrant sector of the economy. Environmental management of animal wastes has therefore become an important concern. On the other hand in the last decade, national and EU policy debate has highlighted the need to investigate alternative energy: in particular energy for transport.
This study investigates the quantities of animal wastes produced in Ireland and their potential treatment using Anaerobic Digestion technologies. In 2005 Ireland had over 8 millions animals (cattle and pigs) and the annual slaughter accounted for over 4.2 million of these creatures. These animals have been responsible for …

Identifying Useful Variables For Vehicle Braking Using The Adjoint Matrix Approach To The Mahalanobis-Taguchi System, Elizabeth A. Cudney, Kenneth M. Ragsdell, Kioumars Paryani
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The Mahalanobis Taguchi System (MTS) is a diagnosis and forecasting method for multivariate data. Mahalanobis distance (MD) is a measure based on correlations between the variables and different patterns that can be identified and analyzed with respect to a base or reference group. MTS is of interest because of its reported accuracy in forecasting small, correlated data sets. This is the type of data that is encountered with consumer vehicle ratings. MTS enables a reduction in dimensionality and the ability to develop a scale based on MD values. MTS identifies a set of useful variables from the complete data set …

Quality Loss Function - Common Methodology For Nominal-The-Best, Smaller-The-Better, And Larger-The-Better Cases, Naresh Kumar Sharma, Kenneth M. Ragsdell
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The quality loss function developed by Dr. Genichi Taguchi considers three cases including nominal-the-best, smaller-the-better, and larger-the-better. the methodology used to deal with the larger-the-better case is slightly different from that for the smaller-the-better and nominal-the-better cases. This paper attempts to bring about similarity among the three cases by introducing a term called the "target-mean ratio" and proposing a common formula for all three cases. the "target-mean ratio" can take different values to represent all three cases to bring about consistency and simplify the model. Also, it eliminates the assumption of target performance at infinite level and brings the model …

Performance Prediction Based Resource Selection In Grid Environments, Peggy Lindner, Edgar Gabriel, Michael M. Resch
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Deploying Grid technologies by distributing an application over several machines has been widely used for scientific simulations, which have large requirements for computational resources. The Grid Configuration Manager (GCM) is a tool developed to ease the management of scientific applications in distributed environments and to hide some of the complexities of Grids from the end-user. In this paper we present an extension to the Grid Configuration Manager in order to incorporate a performance-based resource brokering mechanism. Given a pool of machines and a trace file containing information about the runtime characteristics of the according application, GCM is able to select …

In this paper, the susceptibility of an 8-bit microcontroller to electrostatic discharge (ESD) and electrically fast transients was tested by injecting currents through a capacitive probe into the microcontroller package pins. The reaction of the microcontroller to discharges with different rise times and polarities were investigated by measuring the voltage on the tested pins and by observing the microcontroller's clock output. Susceptibility varied significantly when injecting to one pin compared to another. Interestingly, the clock was more sensitive to currents injected into I/O pins than into pins directly related to the clock (e. g. EXTAL). Further work is underway to …

Frequency-Domain Channel Estimation And Equalization For Single Carrier Underwater Acoustic Communications, Y. Rosa Zheng, Chengshan Xiao, T. C. Yang, Wen-Bin Yang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A new frequency-domain channel estimation and equalization (FDE) scheme is proposed for single carrier (SC) underwater acoustic communications. The proposed SC-FDE employs a small training signal block for initial channel estimation in the frequency domain and converts the estimated transfer function to a desired DFT (discrete Fourier transform) size for channel equalization of the data blocks. The frequency domain equalizer is designed using the linear minimum mean square error criterion. A new phase coherent detection scheme is also proposed and deployed to combat the phase drift due to the instantaneous Doppler in the underwater channels. The channel transfer functions and …

Health Monitoring Of A Truss Bridge Using Adaptive Identification, James W. Fonda, Steve Eugene Watkins
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Integration of structural analysis, system identification, and sensor networks provide health monitoring capabilities that benefit many aspects of infrastructure management. This work presents an adaptive identification method based on Lyapunov methods for a truss structure. Lyapunov methods in the identification provide guaranteed convergence for the parameter estimation. Identification is carried out on a simulation model based on FEA methods. The FEA model offers realistic results from a truss structure and allows verification of the identification method for a rolling load case. A rolling load scenario provides use of realistic loading of a structure so that identification methods may be extended …

Implementation Of A Converter In Sequence Domain To Counter Voltage Imbalances, Murali M. Baggu, Badrul H. Chowdhury
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper demonstrates the basic problem of the conventional d-axis and q-axis control applied to a voltage source converter (VSC) during a system imbalance. The specific imbalances studied are a balanced fault and an unbalanced fault at the terminals of the converter. The dc link voltage of the VSC is disturbed during the unbalanced fault due to negative sequence components in the system. The sequence characteristics of the system during an imbalance are further analyzed. A novel controller in the sequence domain is proposed. The positive sequence components of the control are implemented in the positive synchronous reference frame and …
Mobile Speed Estimation For Broadband Wireless Communications, Y. Rosa Zheng, Chengshan Xiao
Mobile Speed Estimation For Broadband Wireless Communications, Y. Rosa Zheng, Chengshan Xiao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed to estimate mobile speed for broadband wireless communications, which often encounter large number of fading channel taps causing severe intersymbol interference. Theoretical analysis is first derived and practical algorithm is proposed based on the analytical results. The algorithm employs a modified auto-covariance of received signal power to estimate the speed of mobiles. The algorithm is based on the received signals which contain unknown transmitted data, unknown frequency selective multipaths possibly including line-of-sight (LOS) component, and random receiver noise. The algorithm works well for frequency selective Rayleigh and Rician channels. The algorithm is …

Neural Network Controller Development And Implementation For Spark Ignition Engines With High Egr Levels, Jonathan B. Vance, Atmika Singh, Brian C. Kaul, Jagannathan Sarangapani, J. A. Drallmeier
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Past research has shown substantial reductions in the oxides of nitrogen (NOx) concentrations by using 10% -25% exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) in spark ignition (SI) engines (see Dudek and Sain, 1989). However, under high EGR levels, the engine exhibits strong cyclic dispersion in heat release which may lead to instability and unsatisfactory performance preventing commercial engines to operate with high EGR levels. A neural network (NN)-based output feedback controller is developed to reduce cyclic variation in the heat release under high levels of EGR even when the engine dynamics are unknown by using fuel as the control input. A separate …
Performance Analysis Of Wireless Systems With Doubly Selective Rayleigh Fading, Jingxian Wu, Chengshan Xiao
Performance Analysis Of Wireless Systems With Doubly Selective Rayleigh Fading, Jingxian Wu, Chengshan Xiao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Theoretical error performances of wireless communication systems suffering from both doubly selective (time varying and frequency selective) Rayleigh fading and sampler timing offset are analyzed in this paper. Single-input-single-output systems with doubly selective fading channels are equivalently represented as discrete-time single-input-multiple-output (SIMO) systems with correlated frequency-flat fading channels, with the correlation information being determined by the combined effects of sampler timing phase, maximum Doppler spread, and power delay profile of the physical fading. Based on the equivalent SIMO system representation, closed-form error-probability expressions are derived as tight lower bounds for linearly modulated systems with fractionally spaced equalizers. The information on …

Process Development For The Formation Of Post-Bonding Biorecognition Layers In Microfluidic Biosensors, Martin G. Perez, Phaninder R. Kanikella, James N. Reck, Chang-Soo Kim, Matthew O'Keefe
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Formation of the biorecognition layers within microfluidic sensor channels must be done after the completion of the channel structure since these layers cannot withstand the wafer bonding temperature. We propose a new post-bonding immobilization process to prepare the enzyme layers within microfluidic channels of electrochemical biosensors. An array of Pt vertical electrodes is electroplated using a SU-8 mold. The cured SU-8 is then removed by plasma etching to expose the Pt electrode and to define the fluidic channel cavity simultaneously. An array of enzyme posts is formed on the Pt surface by either electropolymerizing or photopolymerizing enzyme precursor solutions injected …

Two Neural Network Based Decentralized Controller Designs For Large Scale Power Systems, Wenxin Liu, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Donald C. Wunsch, Mariesa Crow, David A. Cartes
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents two neural network (NN) based decentralized controller designs for large scale power systems' generators, one is for the excitation control and the other is for the steam valve control. Though the control signals are calculated using local signals only, the transient and overall system stabilities can be guaranteed. NNs are used to approximate the unknown and/or imprecise dynamics of the local power system and the interconnection terms, thus the requirements for exact system parameters are released. Simulation studies with a three machine power system demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller designs.

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A simple Penning ion generator (PIG) that can be easily fabricated with simple machining skills and standard laboratory accessories is described. The PIG source uses an iron cathode body, samarium cobalt permanent magnet, stainless steel anode, and iron cathode faceplate to generate a plasma discharge that yields a continuous 1 mA beam of positively charged hydrogen ions at 1 mTorr of pressure. This operating condition requires 5.4 kV and 32.4 W of power. Operation with helium is similar to hydrogen. The ion source is being designed and investigated for use in a sealed-tube neutron generator; however, this ion source is …

An aircraft is subjected to severe structural and aerodynamic loads during its service life. These loads can cause damage or weakening of the structure especially for aging military and civilian aircraft, thereby affecting its load carrying capabilities. Hence composite patch repairs are increasingly used to repair damaged aircraft metallic structures to restore its structural efficiency. This paper presents the results of Acoustic Emission (AE) monitoring of crack propagation in 2024-T3 Clad aluminum panels repaired with adhesively bonded octagonal, single sided boron/epoxy composite patch under tension-tension fatigue loading. Crack propagation gages were used to monitor crack initiation. The identified AE sensor …

Improved conductivity has been achieved by controllable substitution of an ultraviolet electronic conductor. The transparent conducting oxide system, H-doped Ca12Al(14−x)SixO(33+x/2) with x=0−4, exhibits a conductivity strongly dependent on the substitution level. Four-point direct current conductivity increases with x from 0.15 to 0.61 S/cm at room temperature. The observed conductivity behavior is consistent with the predictions of our first principles density functional calculations for the Si-substituted system with x=0, 2, and 4. Furthermore, the Seebeck coefficient is composition dependent suggesting the existence of an activated mobility associated with small polaron conduction. ©2007 American Institute of Physics

Hydro-Nexrad Radar-Rainfall Estimation Algorithm Development, Testing And Evaluation, Witold F. Krajewski, Bong Chul Seo, Anton Kruger, Piotr Domaszczynski, Gabriele Villarini, Charles Gunyon
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The Hydro-NEXRAD radar-rainfall estimation algorithms involve three main components: 1) preprocessing, 2) rain rate, and 3) rainfall accumulation. The preprocessing algorithm performs the quality control of reflectivity volume data and generates a hybrid scan. That is, reflectivity values for each azimuth and range bin are assigned from the several lowest elevation angles. It optionally estimates an azimuth-dependent vertical reflectivity profile and performs a correction for range effects. The rain rate algorithm converts the corrected reflectivity to rainfall intensity. The user can specify any power-law type empirical relationship between reflectivity and rainfall intensity. The last step of rainfall estimation is to …

In recent years, there has been considerable interest in inorganic/organic hybrid materials that combine the desirable properties of both classes. These composite materials may find significant application in a variety of applications such as sensors, memory and energy conversion, to name just a few. In our laboratories, we have recently made a series of studies on the production of polymer nanofibers and their composites with nanometals. Much of this work has focused on the production of polyaniline (PANI) nanofibers that have been made from one-pot syntheses in aqueous solutions where the polymerization was influenced by -radiation1 or UV-radiation.2 in the …
An Ad Hoc Adaptive Hashing Technique For Non-Uniformly Distributed Ip Address Lookup In Computer Networks, Christopher Martinez, Wei-Ming Lin
An Ad Hoc Adaptive Hashing Technique For Non-Uniformly Distributed Ip Address Lookup In Computer Networks, Christopher Martinez, Wei-Ming Lin
Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
Hashing algorithms have been widely adopted for fast address look-up, which involves a search through a database to find a record associated with a given key. Hashing algorithms transforms a key into a hash value hoping that the hashing renders the database a uniform distribution with respect to the hash value. The closer to uniform hash values, the less search time required for a query. When the database is key-wise uniformly distributed, any regular hashing algorithm (bit-extraction, bit-group XOR, etc.) leads to a statistically perfect uniform hash distribution. When the database has keys with a non-uniform distribution, performance of regular …

This paper documents the development, characterization, and application of a high-resolution thin-film magnetic-field probe. Probe diameter ranged from 5-μm to 100-μm. The 100-μm probe exhibits a 250-7μm improvement in spatial resolution compared to a conventional loop probe, measured at a height of 250 μm over differential traces with a 118-μm spacing. Electric field rejection was improved using shielding and using a 180-degree hybrid junction to separate common-mode (electric field) and differential-mode (primarily magnetic field) coupling. A network analyzer with narrow band filtering was used to detect the relatively weak signal from the probe and to allow detection of phase information. …

More Secure Passwords, Scott Magruder, Stanley X. Lewis Jr
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Passwords are often the first line of defense against hackers trying to logon to a user’s account. Due to this, the password that a user selects for protection of their account is critical. These passwords must be “good” passwords that are not easily cracked. However, how does the network administrator enforce this? A simple change to the login process can make the passwords chosen by users much more secure. A description of this simple process is given in this paper. The normal login process is described. A description of the how hackers attempt to crack passwords is given. The simple …

Improving The Judicial System To Handle Computer Crime, Gerald V. Post, Albert Kagan
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
This paper asked professionals in the legal system to evaluate the current state and effectiveness of laws to identify and deter computer crime. Responses were evaluated with a formal structural equation model. The results generally show that legal professionals believe potential jurors have minimal knowledge of computer crime issues. More importantly, they also believe that judges have little knowledge or experience. A similar lack of knowledge by defense attorneys indicates that it could be difficult for a person accused of computer related infractions to find adequate representation. On the other hand, more experienced participants do not believe computer laws present …

A Framework And Guide For Understanding The Creation Of Consumer Trust, Joseph A. Cazier
A Framework And Guide For Understanding The Creation Of Consumer Trust, Joseph A. Cazier
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
This paper develops a framework and model for building trust by combining research on the creation of trust with the dimensions of trust: ability, benevolence and integrity. By combining these dimensions in a matrix with the types of trust production based on characteristics, process and institutions, the paper develops a robust 3 x 3 matrix with which to categorize and understand trust production. The framework is developed and analyzed in the light of literature on consumer trust. This framework can help researchers, practitioners and consumers understand trust creation and assist businesses in developing a comprehensive strategy for managing trust.
