Modeling Acoustic Effects On Shear Coaxial Jet Flow Utilizing Molecular Dynamic Simulation, Jermaine S. Sailsman
Modeling Acoustic Effects On Shear Coaxial Jet Flow Utilizing Molecular Dynamic Simulation, Jermaine S. Sailsman
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to determine if acoustical effects on a coaxial shear injection jet flow can be modeled through the use of molecular dynamic simulation. Molecular dynamic simulations model flows as a group of interacting particles. The flow in this research was simulated using nitrogen molecules. The initial task involved achieving effective geometry for a simulated coaxial jet. The coaxial jet geometry was driven by the desire for simulations to operate in the continuum regime, which requires very low Knudsen numbers. Three outer to inner jet ratios of 0.0, 1.0, and 6.0 were examined with the inner …
Optical Tracking For Relative Positioning In Automated Aerial Refueling, James H. Spencer
Optical Tracking For Relative Positioning In Automated Aerial Refueling, James H. Spencer
Theses and Dissertations
An algorithm is designed to extract features from video of an air refueling tanker for use in determining the precise relative position of a receiver aircraft. The algorithm is based on receiving a known estimate of the tanker aircraft's position and attitude. The algorithm then uses a known feature model of the tanker to predict the location of those features on a video frame. A corner detector is used to extract features from the video. The measured corners are then associated with known features and tracked from frame to frame. For each frame, the associated features are used to calculate …

Ultimately, the final assembled system …
Analysis Of Stacked Rotated Gratings, Gregory P. Nordin, P. C. Deguzman, J. Jiang
Analysis Of Stacked Rotated Gratings, Gregory P. Nordin, P. C. Deguzman, J. Jiang
Faculty Publications
We study the rigorous design and analysis of stacked rotated gratings (SRGs) for novel photonic devices. A concept of sampling frequency is proposed to systematically design SRGs. With the help of a rectangular sampling lattice, we extend the standard 3D rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) algorithm to the analysis of SRGs. The resultant SRG-RCWA algorithm can be used to exactly analyze SRGs that have grating parameters that match the Fourier expansion represented by the sampling lattice. SRGs that do not fall in this category can often still be closely approximated with our approach. The SRG-RCWA algorithm has been successfully applied to …
Phase Diversity And Polarization Augmented Techniques For Active Imaging, Peter M. Johnson
Phase Diversity And Polarization Augmented Techniques For Active Imaging, Peter M. Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
A multi-frame active phase diversity imaging (APDI) algorithm is derived for coherent light statistics and demonstrated. In addition to conventional focal-plane and diversity-plane data, a statistical description for pupil-plane (PP) intensity is formed and included in the derivation. The algorithm is implemented and characterized via Monte Carlo simulation. Analysis shows that it's robust, insensitive to detection noise for SNR ? 7, performs well for SNR's as low as 2, and that the effect of system configuration on optimal parameters is minimal. Furthermore, introduction of PP data results in a 60% better reconstruction from dynamically aberrated data than obtained using only …

Theses and Dissertations
The AFIT small-scale combustion facility is complete and its first experiment designed and built. Beginning with the partially built facility, detailed designs have been developed to complete the laboratory in order to run small-scale combustion experiments at atmospheric pressure. A sectional model of the Ultra-Compact Combustor has also been designed and built. Although the lab's specific design intent was to study the UCC's cavity-vane interaction, facility flexibility has also been maintained for future work. The design enabled the completion of liquid fuel and air delivery systems, power and control systems, and test equipment. The design includes failsafe operation, remote control, …
An Analysis Of Aircraft Handling Quality Data Obtained From Boundary Avoidance Tracking Flight Test Techniques, Jason D. Dotter
An Analysis Of Aircraft Handling Quality Data Obtained From Boundary Avoidance Tracking Flight Test Techniques, Jason D. Dotter
Theses and Dissertations
Cooper-Harper ratings (CHRs) have been used to describe and compare aircraft handling qualities for over 40 years, but are by their very nature, subjective. The subjective and sometimes ambiguous results obtained from qualitative handling quality ratings are inconsistent with the rest of the flight test process, where quantifiable results followed by statistical analysis are the norm. This thesis presents a method for obtaining accurate and consistent flight test data that quantifies the handling qualities of a specific aircraft. The method is demonstrated using both pilot-in-the-loop simulations and flight tests with the NF-16D Variable-Stability In-Flight Simulator Test Aircraft (VISTA). Boundary Avoidance …
The Effects Of Orthophosphate As A Copper Corrosion Control Inhibitor In High Alkalinity Drinking Water Systems, Stephen Grace
The Effects Of Orthophosphate As A Copper Corrosion Control Inhibitor In High Alkalinity Drinking Water Systems, Stephen Grace
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to investigate orthophosphate as a corrosion inhibitor for copper pipe in a high-alkalinity drinking water system. Specifically, this thesis sought to answer three research questions regarding the impact of orthophosphate treatment, the nature of the mechanism by which orthophosphate controls copper corrosion, and the value of equilibrium modeling in predicting orthophosphate’s effects. The research questions were answered through a comprehensive literature review and experimental methodology integrating laboratory jar tests, water sampling and analysis from a field investigation, qualitative solids analysis, and equilibrium model application. This study analyzed field data obtained over the course of …
Forecasting The Kc-135 Cost Per Flying Hour: A Panel Data Analysis, Michael T. Bryant
Forecasting The Kc-135 Cost Per Flying Hour: A Panel Data Analysis, Michael T. Bryant
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis developed models to forecast the KC-135R monthly Consumables (CONS) and Depot Level Reparable (DLR) Cost per Flying Hour (CPFH) for each U.S. Air Force service component. Using data for each operating location from FY1998 to FY2004, the models were constructed using panel data analysis, a form of regression that adds a cross-sectional and time-series dimension. In addition to including factors previously identified as prime contributors to CPFH, the models added new elements that may influence maintenance costs and be of interest to policymakers. These elements included mission capable rates, airframe operating hours, and climatology factors. An interaction variable …

Aphid: Anomaly Processor In Hardware For Intrusion Detection, Samuel A. Hart
Theses and Dissertations
The Anomaly Processor in Hardware for Intrusion Detection (APHID) is a step forward in the field of co-processing intrusion detection mechanism. By using small, fast hardware primitives APHID relieves the production CPU from the burden of security processing. These primitives are tightly coupled to the CPU giving them access to critical state information such as the current instruction(s) in execution, the next instruction, registers, and processor state information. By monitoring these hardware elements, APHID is able to determine when an anomalous action occurs within one clock cycle. Upon detection, APHID can force the processor into a corrective state, or a …

This dissertation presents methods for modeling and mitigating voltage noise and timing jitter across high-speed chip-to-chip interconnects. Channel equalization and associated tuning schemes have been developed to target the distinct characteristics and signal degradation exhibited in the clock and data signals of multi-Gigabit/second digital communication links. Multiple methods for generating realistically degraded signals for the purpose of simulation are also presented and used to verify the proposed equalization and filtering topologies. Specifically, a new technique for modeling high-speed jittery clocks in the frequency domain is presented and shown to reduce transient simulation time and memory requirements, while simultaneously improving the …
Optimal Orbital Coverage Of Theater Operations And Targets, Kimberly A. Sugrue
Optimal Orbital Coverage Of Theater Operations And Targets, Kimberly A. Sugrue
Theses and Dissertations
The use of satellites as a tactical asset to support theater operations is a desired capability for future space operations. Unlike traditional satellite systems designed to provide coverage over the entire globe or large regions, tactical satellites would provide coverage over a small region which can be modeled as a single ground point defined by a latitude and longitude. In order to provide sufficient utility as a theater asset, a satellite should be placed in an orbit that provides a maximum amount of coverage of the target ground point. This study examined the optimization of orbit parameters to maximize the …
Investigation Of Gate Current In Neutron Irradiated AlXGa1-XN/Gan Heterogeneous Field Effect Transistors Using Voltage And Temperature Dependence, Thomas E. Gray
Theses and Dissertations
The gate current of Al27Ga73N/GaN heterogeneous field effect transistors (HFETs) is investigated using current-voltage (IV) and current-temperature (IT) measurement demonstrating that trap assisted tunneling (TAT) is the primary current mechanism. A thermionic trap assisted tunneling (TTT) model is used with variables of Schottky barrier height, trap energy, donor density and trap density. This results in a sigma of 1.38x10-8 A for IT data measured between 85K and 290K and for IV data measured between 0.0 V and -4.0 V. High energy (>0.5 MeV) neutron irradiation confirms an increase of gate current with fluence. An …

Optimal Spacecraft Attitude Control Using Aerodynamic Torques, Michael L. Gargasz
Optimal Spacecraft Attitude Control Using Aerodynamic Torques, Michael L. Gargasz
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis introduces a method of three-axis spacecraft attitude control using only aerodynamic torques. Attitude actuation is achieved using four control panels mounted on the rear of a cubical spacecraft bus. The controller consists of an outer loop using linear state feedback to determine desired control torque and an inner loop to choose appropriate control panel angles. The inner loop uses a Jacobian-based approach to invert the nonlinear relationship between panel angles and generated torque. Controller performance is evaluated via simulations, which show that three-axis control is possible over a range of initial angles and angular rates. The analysis used …

Evaluating The Application Of Modularity To Reduce Market Risk In Technology Push Products, Aaron John Hopkinson
Theses and Dissertations
Technology push product development presents a number of challenges over the more typical market pull product development. Despite these challenges, enough advantages exist to motivate firms to develop technology push products at greater risk. Modularity is a tool that can address some of these challenges. Currently most research and application of modularity have focused on market pull product development efforts. The research in this thesis explores the value of modularity in technology push product development through the development of methods and the analysis of 68 example products including 35 technology push products. A method has been developed for quantifying the …
A Modular Mixed Signal Vlsi Design Approach For Digital Radar Applications, Brian M. Brakus
A Modular Mixed Signal Vlsi Design Approach For Digital Radar Applications, Brian M. Brakus
Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the idea of building a library of VHDL configurable components for use in digital radar applications. Configurable components allows a designer to choose which components he or she needs and configures those components for a specific application. By doing this, design time for ASICs and FPGAs is shortened because the components are already designed and tested. This idea is demonstrated with a configurable dynamic pipelinable fast fourier transform. Many FFT implementations exist, but this implementation is both configurable and dynamic. Pre-synthesis customization allows the FFT to be tailored to almost any DSP application, and the dynamic property …
Parametric Reliability Of Space-Based Field Programmable Gate Arrays, Joseph C. Pomager
Parametric Reliability Of Space-Based Field Programmable Gate Arrays, Joseph C. Pomager
Theses and Dissertations
The high cost of failure for microelectronic devices operating in the space environment has led to a need for an accurate characterization of a device's reliability prior to being deployed. In addition, significant cost savings can be achieved by determining this reliability prior to fabrication. With the increased performance needs required for many missions, designers are seeking to utilize devices that have smaller and smaller feature sizes. Specifically, feature sizes as small as 130, 90, and 65 nm. A characterization of the space environment is constructed specifically to address the extreme conditions that can affect the performance and functionality of …
Optimal Sensor Threshold Control And The Weapon Operating Characteristic For Autonomous Search And Attack Munitions, Roland A. Rosario
Optimal Sensor Threshold Control And The Weapon Operating Characteristic For Autonomous Search And Attack Munitions, Roland A. Rosario
Theses and Dissertations
This Thesis considers the optimal employment of a wide area search munition in a battlespace where a target is known to be uniformly distributed among false targets which are Poisson distributed. The Poisson distribution's parameter is obtained from readily available battlespace intelligence. This work formulates and solves the optimal control problem for deriving the optimal sensor threshold schedule in order to maximize the probability of attacking the target during the battlespace sweep while constraining the probability of attacking a false target. The efficiency gained by optimally varying the sensor threshold is compared against the performance achieved with a static, optimum …

The push to secure organizational information has brought about the need to develop better metrics for understanding the state of the organization’s security capability. This thesis utilizes case studies of information security metrics programs within Department of Defense organizations, the United States Air Force (USAF), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA’s) Jet Propulsion Lab to discover how these organizations make decisions about how the measurement program is designed, how information is collected and disseminated, and how the collected information supports decision making. This research finds that both the DOD and USAF have highly complex information security programs that …
Hardware Virtualization Applied To Rootkit Defense, Douglas P. Medley
Hardware Virtualization Applied To Rootkit Defense, Douglas P. Medley
Theses and Dissertations
This research effort examines the idea of applying virtualization hardware to enhance operating system security against rootkits. Rootkits are sets of tools used to hide code and/or functionality from the user and operating system. Rootkits can accomplish this feat through using access to one part of an operating system to change another part that resides at the same privilege level. Hardware assisted virtualization (HAV) provides an opportunity to defeat this tactic through the introduction of a new operating mode. Created to aid operating system virtualization, HAV provides hardware support for managing and saving multiple states of the processor. This hardware …
Multi-Dimensional Classification Algorithm For Automatic Modulation Recognition, Ouail Albairat
Multi-Dimensional Classification Algorithm For Automatic Modulation Recognition, Ouail Albairat
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis proposes an approach for modulation classification using existing features in a more efficient way. The Multi-Dimensional Classification Algorithm (MDCA) treats features extracted from signals of interest as elements with irrelevant identities, hence eliminating any dependence of the classifier on any particular feature. This design enables the use of any number of features, and the MDCA algorithm provides the capability to classify modulations in higher dimensions. The use of multiple features requires an equal number of data dimensions, and thus classification in as high a dimensional space as possible can improve final classification results. Finally, the MDCA algorithm uses …

Implementation And Optimization Of The Advanced Encryption Standard Algorithm On An 8-Bit Field Programmable Gate Array Hardware Platform, Ryan J. Silva
Theses and Dissertations
The contribution of this research is three-fold. The first is a method of converting the area occupied by a circuit implemented on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) to an equivalent as a measure of total gate count. This allows direct comparison between two FPGA implementations independent of the manufacturer or chip family. The second contribution improves the performance of the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) on an 8-bit computing platform. This research develops an AES design that occupies less than three quarters of the area reported by the smallest design in current literature as well as significantly increases area efficiency. …
Price Vs. Performance: The Value Of Next Generation Fighter Aircraft, John M. Stelly
Price Vs. Performance: The Value Of Next Generation Fighter Aircraft, John M. Stelly
Theses and Dissertations
The United States Department of Defense (DoD) is currently recapitalizing its aging fighter aircraft inventory with the F-22A and F-35. While the DoD may consider cost and performance issues, it does not use a quantitative model that effectively measures the tradeoffs between the two. This thesis constructs a hedonic model of the fighter aircraft market to measure the implicit price on fighter performance characteristics and specifically applies it to next-generation aircraft. Data from 50 aircraft from 1949-present were used to construct two models – one based on procurement costs and one based on research, design, test, and evaluation (RDT&E) costs. …
Beyond Passswords: Usage And Policy Transformation, Alan S. Alsop
Beyond Passswords: Usage And Policy Transformation, Alan S. Alsop
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to determine whether the transition to a two-factor authentication system is more secure than a system that relied only on what users “know” for authentication. While we found that factors that made passwords inherently vulnerable did not transfer to the PIN portion of a two-factor authentication system, we did find significant problems relating to usability, worker productivity, and the loss and theft of smart cards. The new authentication method has disrupted our ability to stay connected to ongoing mission issues, forced some installations to cut off remote access for their users and in one …
Using Concept Maps To More Efficiently Create Intelligence Information Models, Christopher E. Coryell
Using Concept Maps To More Efficiently Create Intelligence Information Models, Christopher E. Coryell
Theses and Dissertations
Information models are a critical tool that enables intelligence customers to quickly and accurately comprehend U.S. intelligence agency products. The Knowledge Pre-positioning System (KPS) is the standard repository for information models at the National Air and Space Intelligence Center (NASIC). The current approach used by NASIC to build a KPS information model is laborious and costly. Intelligence analysts design an information model using a manual, butcher-paper-based process. The output of their work is then entered into KPS by either a single NASIC KPS "database modeler" or a contractor (at a cost of roughly $100K to the organization). This thesis proposes …

Characterizationn Of Polumer-Based Mems Pyroelectic Infrared Detector, Mark E. Allard
Theses and Dissertations
AFRL/MLPJE had developed a novel thermal sensing material termed protein-impregnated-polymer (PIP). Thus far, a proof-of-concept has been demonstrated using a macro-sized pixel (0.64 mm2) as a bolometric detector. In an effort to better characterize this novel thermal sensing material, experimental data was used to determine figures of merit (FOMs) comparative to off-the-shelf thermal detectors. Microelectromechanical (MEMS) pixels were designed and used as the support structure for an inkjet-deposited droplet of the PIP. During the material characterization, two observations were made: PIP is a pyroelectric material, and the polymer (polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)) without the protein was found to be …
