Finding Relevant Pdf Medical Journal Articles By The Content Of Their Figures As Well As Their Text, Ammon J. Christiansen

Theses and Dissertations

This work addresses the need for an alternative to keyword-based search for sifting through large PDF medical journal article document collections for literature review purposes. Despite users' best efforts to form precise and accurate queries, it is often difficult to guess the right keywords to find all the related articles while finding a minimum number of unrelated ones. Failure during literature review to find relevant, related research results in wasted research time and effort in addition to missing significant work in the related area which could affect the quality of the research work being conducted. The purpose of this work …

Trials Bike Frame Concept, David Boboltz, Rob Harmer, Caleb Vanderveen Apr 2007

Trials Bike Frame Concept, David Boboltz, Rob Harmer, Caleb Vanderveen

Honors Theses

Development of a Concept Trials Frame was a mechanical engineering design project that developed a new bicycle frame that has the strength and durability to be used for trials bike riding. The scope of the project was placed solely on the bicycle's frame. Current frames were analyzed based on their strength, durability, stiffness, weight, and appearance. These factors were ranked for importance and became the performance targets for the new frame. Several designs that utilize elastic strain energy to increase performance were brainstormed. Following SolidWorks modeling, equivalent impact loads were calculated using several analytical methods. These loads were then applied …

Coupled-Mode Theory For Stimulated Raman Scattering In High-Q/Vm Silicon Photonic Band Gap Defect Cavity Lasers, Xiaodong Yang, C. W. Wong

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We examine the dynamics of stimulated Raman scattering in designed high-Q/Vm silicon photonic band gap nanocavities through the coupled-mode theory framework towards optically-pumped silicon lasing. The interplay of other X(3) effects such as two-photon absorption and optical Kerr, related free-carrier dynamics, thermal effects, as well as linear losses such as cavity radiation and linear material absorption are included and investigated numerically. Our results clarify the relative contributions and evolution of the mechanisms, and demonstrate the lasing and shutdown thresholds. Our studies illustrate the conditions for continuous-wave and pulsed highly-efficient Raman frequency conversion for practical realization in monolithic silicon …

Development Of A Biofidelic 'Legform' Impact Test Device, John Davis, Peter Schuster Apr 2007

Development Of A Biofidelic 'Legform' Impact Test Device, John Davis, Peter Schuster

Mechanical Engineering

Current EuroNCAP test specifications attempt to predict pedestrian lower limb injury in a lateral impact with a rigid legform test device developed by the UK's TRL (Transportation Research Lab). Research shows that the measurements taken from this device (knee bending angle, knee shear, and upper tibia acceleration) do not necessarily correspond to accurate injury prediction. Recent research suggests that the primary improvement to the current test device would be a flexible legform, or one that has more biofidelity (i.e., simulates actual human lower limb response).

The work presented in this paper first reviews current legforms developed for pedestrian impact testing, …

Panoramic Video For Efficient Ground Surveillance From Small Unmanned Air Vehicles, Joseph Aaron Jackson Apr 2007

Panoramic Video For Efficient Ground Surveillance From Small Unmanned Air Vehicles, Joseph Aaron Jackson

Theses and Dissertations

As unmanned air vehicle (UAV) utilization increases in Wilderness Search and Rescue (WiSAR) efforts, onboard sensors yielding more information will be desired. UAVs can assist WiSAR efforts by accelerating the ground search process through returning quality aerial footage of the terrain. Additionally, tracking the progress of a search by populating a digital map with video resolution data increases confidence that a comprehensive search of the region has been made. This thesis presents methods for acquiring video from multiple video sensors and fusing them into a single rendered video stream as a Virtual Gimbal. The panoramic video stream is the first …

Stochastic Chaotic Motion Of Ships In Beam Seas, Li-Qin Liu, You-Gang Tang, Hong-Xia Li Apr 2007

Stochastic Chaotic Motion Of Ships In Beam Seas, Li-Qin Liu, You-Gang Tang, Hong-Xia Li

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The stochastic chaotic motion and the threshold intensity of the external excitation force for onset of chaos of the ships in random beam waves are studied by the nonlinear stochastic dynamics theory. The random differential equation of ships’ rolling motion is established with considering the nonlinear damping, nonlinear restoring moment and the white noise wave excitation. The random Melnikov mean-square criterion is used to determine the threshold intensity for onset of chaos. The probability density function of the rolling response is calculated through solving the stochastic differential equations by applying the path integral method in the chaotic region. It is …

Study Of The Flow Field And Scalar Transport Of Indoor Ventilating Space Under The Impact Of Coanda Vortex, Je-Ee Ho, Hong-Tsu Young

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The vortex in the flow field will isolate the space to further reduce the indoor air exchange and convective efficiency. The Coanda vortex accompanied by the inlet jet usually has the most active effect on the flow field. Both its location and scalar size which are primary determined by the strength of the injected flow and the arrangement of inlet; outlet will deeply affect the air-exchange volume, even reduce the available ventilation space. A 2-D turbulent model with SIMPLE method is set up to simulate the air motion of indoors; it can easily describe the working of Coanda vortex in …

Controller architecture, which combines neural network with internal model control, has been outlined and its effectiveness demonstrated on the container ship roll stabilizer. The control signal error is used with back-propagation algorithm to update the weights of the neural controller. In conclusion, the neural network based on internal model control systems are analyzed, and compared to classical PID control results. As can be seen from numerical results, the NN based on IMC is implemented …

Preserved Enzymatic Activity Of Glucose Oxidase Immobilized On Unmodified Electrodes For Glucose Detection, Gang Wang, Ngee Mei Thai, Siu-Tung Yau Apr 2007

Preserved Enzymatic Activity Of Glucose Oxidase Immobilized On Unmodified Electrodes For Glucose Detection, Gang Wang, Ngee Mei Thai, Siu-Tung Yau

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Glucose sensing electrodes have been realized by immobilizing glucose oxidase (GOx) on unmodified edge plane of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (epHOPG) and the native oxide of heavily doped silicon (SiO2/Si). Both kinds of electrode show direct interfacial electron transfer due to the redox process of the immobilized GOx. The measured formal potential of the redox process agrees with that of the native enzyme, suggesting that the immobilized GOx has retained its enzymatic activity. The electron transfer rates of the GOx immobilized electrode are 2s−1 for GOx/epHOPG electrode and 7.9s−1 for GOx/SiO2/Si electrode, which …

An Experimental Study On Progressive Wave-Induced Stresses Duration In Seabed Soil, Shang-Chun Chang, Lien-Kwei Chien, Jaw-Guei Lin, Yung-Feng Chiu Apr 2007

An Experimental Study On Progressive Wave-Induced Stresses Duration In Seabed Soil, Shang-Chun Chang, Lien-Kwei Chien, Jaw-Guei Lin, Yung-Feng Chiu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The total stress behavior in seabed soil induced by progressive waves was investigated in time sequence through the experiments in a wave flume. The static stress measurements show that the natural deposit seabed retains an initial shear stress that reduces the resistance capacity of shear strength of the soil. The dynamic stress measurements show that, by comparing with seabed surface pressure, the vertical stress, horizontal stress, and pore water pressure are found to have different phase shifts. Such phase shifts strongly affect the duration behavior of the total stresses of the soil and different from the current theories that assume …

Calibration Of Atomic Force Microscope Cantilevers Using Piezolevers, Saltuk B. Aksu, Joseph A. Turner

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

The atomic force microscope (AFM) can provide qualitative information by numerous imaging modes, but it can also provide quantitative information when calibrated cantilevers are used. In this article a new technique is demonstrated to calibrate AFM cantilevers using a reference piezolever. Experiments are performed on 13 different commercially available cantilevers. The stiff cantilevers, whose stiffness is more than 0.4 N/m, are compared to the stiffness values measured using nanoindentation. The experimental data collected by the piezolever method is in good agreement with the nanoindentation data. Calibration with a piezolever is fast, easy, and nondestructive and a commercially available AFM is …

Applications Of Search Theory To Coordinated Searching By Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Steven R. Hansen Apr 2007

Applications Of Search Theory To Coordinated Searching By Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Steven R. Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

Concepts in optimal search theory have been used in human-based aerial search since World War II. This thesis addresses the technical and theoretical issues necessary to apply this crucial theory to search path planning for Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (SUAVs). A typical search often requires that more than one target be located. Accordingly, a method is presented to locate multiple targets in three dimensions, as well as to differentiate between them. However, significant error can be present when locating targets from an airborne platform, and the idea of target quality is also introduced as a way to describe the reliability …

A Multilevel Analysis Of Individual And Organizational-Level Effects On Staff Attitudes Towards Use Of Medication In Substance Abuse Treatment, John Patrick Fitzgerald Apr 2007

A Multilevel Analysis Of Individual And Organizational-Level Effects On Staff Attitudes Towards Use Of Medication In Substance Abuse Treatment, John Patrick Fitzgerald

Dissertations and Theses

Studies consistently indicate a general lack of support for use of medications in the treatment of substance abuse disorders by clinicians, patients, and other stakeholders involved in treatment. Both individual and organizational factors have been shown to influence attitudes towards medications, but the relative contribution of each of these factors remains unclear. Whereas previous studies, by their very design, have generated multilevel data structures, they nevertheless have employed analytic strategies that ignore the multilevel dependencies inherent in such data sets.

To address these limitations, this study took a multilevel approach to investigate the influence of individual and organizational factors on …

Signal-To-Noise Ratio For Cross-Sensor Fusion Approach, Samuel Peter Kozaitis, Michel Ouendeno

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

We determined the signal-to-noise ratios for an image fusion approach that is suitable for application to systems with disparate sensors. We found there was reconstruction error present when the forward and reverse transforms for image fusion give perfect reconstruction.

Wavelet-Based Fusion Approach Using Unique Reconstruction Approach, Michel Ouendeno, Samuel Peter Kozaitis Apr 2007

Wavelet-Based Fusion Approach Using Unique Reconstruction Approach, Michel Ouendeno, Samuel Peter Kozaitis

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

We used measures based on entropy to evaluate a method designed to fuse imagery from different sensor types. The method uses different forward transforms of input images and a common transform to reconstruct the final result. We attempted to examine the link between the error in a reconstructed result and its associated entropy.

Improved Denoising Approach Using Higher-Order Statistics, Samuel Peter Kozaitis Apr 2007

Improved Denoising Approach Using Higher-Order Statistics, Samuel Peter Kozaitis

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

We presented a method to reduce noise in signals using a higher-order, correlation-based approach. This paper examines the differences between hard and soft thresholds using the higher-order method, and the use of different wavelets in the denoising algorithm. Using a detection algorithm derived from third-order statistics, we determined if a wavelet coefficient was either mostly noise or mostly signal based on third-order statistics. We found that hard thresholding worked best when compared to soft thresholding but there is the possibility of improvement using soft thresholding.

Short-Term Stock Market Timing Prediction Under Reinforcement Learning Schemes, Hailin Li, Cihan H. Dagli, David Lee Enke Apr 2007

Short-Term Stock Market Timing Prediction Under Reinforcement Learning Schemes, Hailin Li, Cihan H. Dagli, David Lee Enke

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

There are fundamental difficulties when only using a supervised learning philosophy to predict financial stock short-term movements. We present a reinforcement-oriented forecasting framework in which the solution is converted from a typical error-based learning approach to a goal-directed match-based learning method. The real market timing ability in forecasting is addressed as well as traditional goodness-of-fit-based criteria. We develop two applicable hybrid prediction systems by adopting actor-only and actor-critic reinforcement learning, respectively, and compare them to both a supervised-only model and a classical random walk benchmark in forecasting three daily-based stock indices series within a 21-year learning and testing period. The …

Image-Guided Diffuse Optical Fluorescence Tomography Implemented With Laplacian-Type Regularization, Scott C. Davis, Hamid Dehghani, Jia Wang, Shudong Jiang, Brian W. Pogue, Keith D. Paulsen Apr 2007

Image-Guided Diffuse Optical Fluorescence Tomography Implemented With Laplacian-Type Regularization, Scott C. Davis, Hamid Dehghani, Jia Wang, Shudong Jiang, Brian W. Pogue, Keith D. Paulsen

Dartmouth Scholarship

A promising method to incorporate tissue structural information into the reconstruction of diffusion-based fluorescence imaging is introduced. The method regularizes the inversion problem with a Laplacian-type matrix, which inherently smoothes pre-defined tissue, but allows discontinuities between adjacent regions. The technique is most appropriately used when fluorescence tomography is combined with structural imaging systems. Phantom and simulation studies were used to illustrate significant improvements in quantitative imaging and linearity of response with the new algorithm. Images of an inclusion containing the fluorophore Lutetium Texaphyrin (Lutex) embedded in a cylindrical phantom are more accurate than in situations where no structural information is …

Selection Of Fusion Operations Using Rank-Score Diversity For Robot Mapping And Localization, Damian M. Lyons, D. Frank Hsu, Qiang Ma, Liang Wang

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we evaluate the use of a rank-score diversity measure for selecting sensory fusion operations for a robot localization and mapping application. Our current application involves robot mapping and navigation in an outdoor urban search and rescue situation in which we have many similar and mutually occluding landmarks. The robot is a 4- wheel direct drive platform equipped with visual, stereo depth and ultrasound sensors. In such an application it’s difficult to make useful and realistic assumptions about the sensor or environment statistics. Combinatorial Fusion Analysis(CFA) is used to develop an approach to fusion with unknown sensor and …

Observations Of Structural Damage Caused By Hurricane Katrina On The Mississippi Gulf Coast, Christopher D. Eamon, Patrick Fitzpatrick, Dennis D. Truax Apr 2007

Observations Of Structural Damage Caused By Hurricane Katrina On The Mississippi Gulf Coast, Christopher D. Eamon, Patrick Fitzpatrick, Dennis D. Truax

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research Publications

The loads associated with Hurricane Katrina led to the destruction or severe damage of approximately 130,000 homes and over 200 deaths in the state of Mississippi. This paper discusses the results of a field inspection of structural damage along the state’s Gulf Coast area caused by this hurricane. It was found that reinforced concrete, steel frame, and heavy timber structures generally performed well, with minimal structural damage. Precast concrete, light frame wood, and bridge structures generally performed poorly. Non-structural components of all building types, in particular facades and interior partitions subjected to storm surge, were typically destroyed. For various structures, …

Set-Valued Extensions Of Fuzzy Logic: Classification Theorems, Gilbert Ornelas, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2007

Set-Valued Extensions Of Fuzzy Logic: Classification Theorems, Gilbert Ornelas, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Experts are often not 100% confident in their statements. In traditional fuzzy logic, the expert's degree of confidence in each of his or her statements is described by a number from the interval [0,1]. However, due to similar uncertainty, an expert often cannot describe his or her degree by a single number. It is therefore reasonable to describe this degree by, e.g., a set of numbers. In this paper, we show that under reasonable conditions, the class of such sets coincides either with the class of all 1-point sets (i.e., with the traditional fuzzy set set of all numbers), or …
