H-Infinity Output Feedback Control: Application To Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Jyotirmay Gadewadikar May 2007

H-Infinity Output Feedback Control: Application To Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Jyotirmay Gadewadikar

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation presents new necessary and sufficient conditions for static output-feedback control of linear time-invariant systems using the H-Infinity approach. Simplified conditions are derived which only require the solution of two coupled matrix design equations. It is shown that the static output-feedback H-Infinity solution does not generally yield a well-defined saddle point for the zero sum differential game; conditions are given under which it does. This work presents a simplified parameterization of all H-Infinity static state-feedback controllers in terms of a single algebraic Riccati equation and a free parameter matrix. As a special case, necessary and sufficient conditions for the …

Ccbdi Readout Circuit For Ybacuo Micromachined Microbolometers, Sandeep Kumar May 2007

Ccbdi Readout Circuit For Ybacuo Micromachined Microbolometers, Sandeep Kumar

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Semiconducting YBaCuO (Yttrium-Barium-Copper-Oxide) as a new uncooled microbolometer material is evaluated for CMOS compatibility. By not requiring cryogenic cooling, the self-supporting semiconducting YBaCuO micromachined microbolometers have found an attractive application for thermal detection with substantial reduction in system cost, size, weight and power consumption as compared to cooled photon detectors. The lower thermal conductance of the microbolometers to the substrate provides good sensitivity for infrared detection. The CCBDI (Constant Current Buffered Direct Injection) readout circuit is designed to work with a traditional frame rate of 30Hz and as a novel approach improves the performance of uncooled IR cameras by a …

New Equilibria For Noncooperative Games, Phantipa Insuwan May 2007

New Equilibria For Noncooperative Games, Phantipa Insuwan

Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive

In this dissertation we present an alternative to the Nash Equilibrium (NE), which is regarded as the fundamental solution concept in game theory. An NE provides a solution in which no player can improve his payoff by unilaterally changing strategies. However, the NE has weaknesses as exemplified by the paradoxical Prisoner's Dilemma game, where the unique NE is dominated by another possible outcome. Moreover, an NE assumes all players select their strategies according to the same NE so equilibrium holds. For multiple NE's, no standard approach exists for selecting a single one, though various refinements such as perfect Nash equilibria …

Design, Fabrication And Assembly Of 3-D Microstructures, Ping Zhang May 2007

Design, Fabrication And Assembly Of 3-D Microstructures, Ping Zhang

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The primary goal of a micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) is to integrate electronics, sensors and actuators into a tiny system, which can be easily fabricated and packaged. Currently there is no standard process for manufacturing all the sub-components since a lot of them are made from different materials and fabrication technologies. Therefore, there is a great interest to develop a reliable manufacturing approach that allows for the integration of multiple micro devices on a single chip. This work describes two approaches to achieve this heterogeneous integration: (1) hybrid material integration by introducing new materials into a well-known self-assembly platform (PolyMUMPs) to …

Characterization Of The Ibc Technologies Superlig¨ 620 Solid Phase Extraction Resin With Applications For Automated Process Monitoring, John Clements May 2007

Characterization Of The Ibc Technologies Superlig¨ 620 Solid Phase Extraction Resin With Applications For Automated Process Monitoring, John Clements

All Theses

Characterization of the IBC Advanced Technologies SuperLig¨ 620 solid phase extraction resin was performed in order to develop an automated strontium-90 process monitor. The main focus was on strontium separation from barium, with the goal of developing an automated separation process for strontium-90 in Hanford high-level tank wastes. High-level waste tanks contain significant cesium-137 activities, of which barium daughters are of great concern as interferences to strontium quantification. A number of complexants were studied in a series of batch distribution coefficient experiments, as SuperLig¨ 620 was not previously known to elute strontium in typical mineral acids. The optimal separation was …

Comparison Of Simulation-Based Schedule Generation Methodologies For Semiconductor Manufacturing, Wenfeng Li May 2007

Comparison Of Simulation-Based Schedule Generation Methodologies For Semiconductor Manufacturing, Wenfeng Li

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Although a number of approaches have been developed to schedule tasks or jobs in many different manufacturing environments, increasing manufacturing complexity continues to motivate the need for additional scheduling heuristic research and development. This is particularly true for semiconductor manufacturing operations, arguably the most complex manufacturing environment in existence. Simulation-based scheduling has shown recent promise as a means for developing schedules for dynamic, stochastic manufacturing environments. I investigate the potential advantages and drawbacks of using simulation-based scheduling in a complex job shop as motivated by a semiconductor wafer fab.

Real Time Prognostic Strategies Application To Gas Turbines, Rajat Sekhon May 2007

Real Time Prognostic Strategies Application To Gas Turbines, Rajat Sekhon

All Theses

Gas turbines are increasingly deployed throughout the world to provide electrical and mechanical power in consumer and industrial sectors. The efficiency of these complex multi-domain systems is dependant on the turbine's design, established operating envelope, environmental conditions, and maintenance schedule. A real-time health management strategy can enhance overall plant reliability through the continual monitoring of transient and steady-state system operations. The availability of sensory information for control system needs often allow diagnostic/prognostic algorithms to be executed in a parallel fashion which warn of impending system degradations. Specifically, prognostic strategies estimate the future plant behavior which leads to minimized maintenance costs …

Evaluation Of Different Contra-Flow Strategies For Hurricane Evacuation In Charleston, South Carolina, Liz Stephen

All Theses

The number of category four and five hurricanes has nearly doubled over the past decade. Charleston, the second most populous city in South Carolina, is located on a very low peninsula, making it susceptible to floods during hurricanes and storm surges. In the event of a hurricane, the population at-risk must be evacuated to safety as quickly as possible. The Interstate system is the primary mode to evacuate at-risk population out of Charleston. Effective traffic management strategies are needed to manage the significant increase in demand on highways during the evacuation and contra-flowing traffic has been applied as a strategy …

Temperature Control Of An Air Shower, Vedik Bobba

All Theses

Accuracy and repeatability in measurement is a primary concern in improving and maintaining the quality of a product in an industry. In the case of coordinate measuring machines, these factors are affected due to the ambient conditions. Specifically, change in temperature affects machine geometry and causes positioning errors. As a result, temperature and humidity control inside the housing has become an important and integrated concern of measuring machine. This research concentrates on the modeling, design, control and validation of an air shower to meet a 20 ± 0.1 ¼C specification.
The optimum performance of the control of temperature of air …

Attestation-Based Remote Biometric Authentication, Thomas Polon May 2007

Attestation-Based Remote Biometric Authentication, Thomas Polon

All Theses

Migration from password and token-based authentication in distributed systems requires fundamental changes to the authentication process. A person's biometric data is not a secret, which presents a fundamental difference with other authentication methods. Matching a sample with a database template is secondary to establishing trust in the integrity of the sample. The process is similar to establishing a chain of custody for judicial evidence. In computer systems this is accomplished using attestation architectures. In this paper, a design for a secure remote biometric login system based on an attestation architecture is analyzed. The system uses a commercially available Trusted Platform …

A perimeter taxiway (PT) or end-around taxiway (EAT) operation is a new concept being developed at several airports around the country to eliminate active departure runway incursions during peak periods. PTs will enhance capacity by permitting uninterrupted, safe, continuous takeoffs and landings within the operations framework and guidelines established by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). For this research, the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport's (DFW) proposed PT operations are considered for analysis and evaluation. This concept is tested using actual historical flight data at DFW for simulation and analytical modeling based on the FAA safety factors available in the Visual SIMMOD …

Impedance Identification Of Integrated Power System Components Using Recurrent Neural Networks., Peng Xiao, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Keith Corzine May 2007

Impedance Identification Of Integrated Power System Components Using Recurrent Neural Networks., Peng Xiao, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Keith Corzine

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Impedance characteristics of shipboard power systems provide important information for studies on system stability and integration. Existing injection based impedance measurement techniques require multiple tests on the system to obtain characteristics over wide frequency ranges. In this paper, recurrent neural networks (RNNs) are used to model the small signal dynamics of power electronic systems based on a single test in which randomized signals are injected into the system. The trained RNN is then used to extract the small-signal impedances/admittances of the system. A number of tests have been carried out in simulation to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Dual X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is the current gold standard for the diagnosis of osteoporosis. However, patients can suffer osteoporotic fractures despite normal bone mineral density, partly because of unmeasured influences of both the protein and mineral phases of bone that are affected in osteoporosis. There is currently no clinically applicable method of evaluating the health of the protein phase. The proteins in human nail (keratin) and bone (collagen) require sulphation and disulphide bond (S-S) formation for structural integrity and disorders of either sulphur metabolism or cystathione beta-synthase can lead to structural abnormalities in these tissues. Raman protein spectra provide a …

A Novel Cylindrical Punch Method To Characterize Interfacial Adhesion And Residual Stress Of A Thin Polymer Film, Bing Feng Ju, Kuo Kang Liu, Ming Fung Wong, Kai Tak Wan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Adhesion of a pre-stressed silicone rubber film to a planar graphite surface was investigated by a new cylindrical punch method. a homemade apparatus was constructed to meet force and displacement resolutions of 0.1 μN and 10 nm. When the punch approached the intersurface force range across the punch-film gap, the film jumped into contact at "pull-in". Upon unloading, once the tensile load reached a threshold, a spontaneous delamination occurred at "pull-off" with a non-zero contact circle. a theoretical model was constructed based a simple energy balance. the new method can be used to characterize an adhesion interface between a pre-stressed …

Bist Design For Ccd Based Digital Imaging System, Bin Jin, Nohpill Park, Serge N. Demidenko, Minsu Choi, Fabrizio Lombardi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a BIST design for CCD-based digital imaging system. Pixels on a CCD are not free from defective or faulty pixels due to numerous causes such as imperfect fabrication, excessive exposure to light, radiation, sensing element aging, and excessive mechanical shock, to mention a few. Today's high demand for high resolution CCDs is dictating defect/fault-tolerance in such devices. Especially, traditional on-device BIST cannot be readily employed on the imaging devices such as CCD due to the unique requirement that no pixel can be utilized to repair or bypass a defect on any other pixels. Therefore, the BIST technique …

Photopolymerization-Induced Directional Crystal Growth In Reactive Mixtures, Soo Jeoung Park, Pankaj Rathi, Thein Kyu May 2007

Photopolymerization-Induced Directional Crystal Growth In Reactive Mixtures, Soo Jeoung Park, Pankaj Rathi, Thein Kyu

College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

Photopolymerization-induced crystallization has been demonstrated in blends of polyethylene oxide-diacrylate at temperatures above the depressed melting temperature of the crystalline component. Upon exposure to ultraviolet irradiation, the melting transition curve moves upward and eventually surpasses the reaction temperature, thereby inducing phase separation as well as crystallization. The present paper demonstrates the occurrence of directionally solidified interface morphologies of polymer crystals subjected to a photointensity gradient. The epitaxially grown seaweed or degenerate structures were observed at the circumference (low-intensity region) while the dense branched spherulites developed at the core high-intensity region.

Comparing Features Of Three-Dimensional Object Models Using Registration Based On Surface Curvature Signatures, Timothy David Gatzke, Cindy M. Grimm May 2007

Comparing Features Of Three-Dimensional Object Models Using Registration Based On Surface Curvature Signatures, Timothy David Gatzke, Cindy M. Grimm

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This dissertation presents a technique for comparing local shape properties for similar three-dimensional objects represented by meshes. Our novel shape representation, the curvature map, describes shape as a function of surface curvature in the region around a point. A multi-pass approach is applied to the curvature map to detect features at different scales. The feature detection step does not require user input or parameter tuning. We use features ordered by strength, the similarity of pairs of features, and pruning based on geometric consistency to efficiently determine key corresponding locations on the objects. For genus zero objects, the corresponding locations are …

Unwoven Aspect Analysis, Morgan G. Deters May 2007

Unwoven Aspect Analysis, Morgan G. Deters

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Various languages and tools supporting advanced separation of concerns (such as aspect-oriented programming) provide a software developer with the ability to separate functional and non-functional programmatic intentions. Once these separate pieces of the software have been specified, the tools automatically handle interaction points between separate modules, relieving the developer of this chore and permitting more understandable, maintainable code. Many approaches have left traditional compiler analysis and optimization until after the composition has been performed; unfortunately, analyses performed after composition cannot make use of the logical separation present in the original program. Further, for modular systems that can be configured with …

Optimization Of Zero Net-Mass Flow Actuators For Aero-Optics Applications, Moira L. Denatale, Jonathan M. Mihaly

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Using experimental methods, zero net-mass flow actuators were optimized to manipulate flow around an airborne laser turret in order to reduce destructive aero-optics effects. Synthetic jets are created by 50 mm and 27 mm piezoelectric disk actuators. Our optimization process involved identifying an actuator’s cavity size, driving frequency, and amplitude to achieve the strongest, most consistent jet possible. The effects of driving a single actuator versus driving two actuators in or out of phase with one another were also investigated. An initial cavity depth was determined using the Helmholtz resonator cavity approximation which estimates the ideal cavity depth for a …

Loss Of Visual Function In Light-Stressed Mice, Ana Stachowiak

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Because of the highly devastating effects of retinal degenerative diseases, the study of mechanisms of vision loss is imperative. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading causes of blindness in the elderly. In this study I examined how extreme light exposure, which causes light stress in rodents, affects the visual and retinal function of 3 strains of mice. I hypothesized that, three strains of mice, C57BL/6J, ALR/Lj and BALB/c, would all show significant changes in visual and retinal function. I used behavior testing to assess visual acuity and contrast sensitivity as well as electroretinogram (ERG) recordings to assess retinal function. …

High Resolution Millimeter Wave Inspecting Of The Orbiter Acreage Heat Tiles Of The Space Shuttle, Joseph Toby Case, Sergey Kharkovsky, R. Zoughi, Frank L. Hepburn

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The physical cause of Space Shuttle Columbia's catastrophic failure was a breach in its thermal protection system, caused by a piece of external tank insulating foam (SOFI) separating from the external tank and striking the leading edge of the left wing of the orbiter. Consequently, there is an urgent need for a rapid, robust and life-circle oriented nondestructive testing (NDT) technique capable of inspecting the SOFI as well as the orbiter's protective heat tiles and its fuselage prior and subsequent to a launch. Microwave and millimeter wave NDT methods have shown great potential to achieve these goals using real focused …

In addition, the thermal characteristic of a device surrounded by the multiple adjacent …

Analysis Of Tapered Laminated Composite Tubes Under Tension And Torsion, Chethana Shankara Rao May 2007

Analysis Of Tapered Laminated Composite Tubes Under Tension And Torsion, Chethana Shankara Rao

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Closed form expressions for determining the displacement and twisting angle of tapered composite tubes are developed. The analytical expressions are developed based on the modified laminated plate theory which includes the tubular wall curvature of the laminate. It is found that the axial deformation and the twisting angle calculated by the current method agree well with the results obtained from the finite element method. The effect of stacking sequence, taper angle and fiber orientations on the axial deformation and twisting angle are studied by using the developed method. It is found that the taper angle plays a significant role on …

Permeability Of Municipal Solid Waste In Bioreactor Landfill With Degradation, Kiran Kumar Penmethsa May 2007

Permeability Of Municipal Solid Waste In Bioreactor Landfill With Degradation, Kiran Kumar Penmethsa

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Bioreactor landfills are operated and controlled to accelerate refuse decomposition, gas production and biological stabilization of the municipal solid waste (MSW). Leachate recirculation in bioreactor landfill creates a favorable environment for rapid microbial decomposition of the biodegradable components of solid waste. Therefore, clear understanding of the mechanism of moisture movement within the solid waste would be necessary for successful design and operation of the bioreactor landfill. Permeability is an important parameter during the design of leachate collection and recirculation system. In the current study an experimental program was designed to determine the variation of coefficient of permeability of MSW with …
