A Genetic Algorithms Approach To Non-Coding Rna Gene Searches, Jennifer A. Smith Jul 2006

A Genetic Algorithms Approach To Non-Coding Rna Gene Searches, Jennifer A. Smith

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A genetic algorithm is proposed as an alternative to the traditional linear programming method for scoring covariance models in non-coding RNA (ncRNA) gene searches. The standard method is guaranteed to find the best score, but it is too slow for general use. The observation that most of the search space investigated by the linear programming method does not even remotely resemble any observed sequence in real sequence data can be used to motivate the use of genetic algorithms (GAs) to quickly reject regions of the search space. A search space with many local minima makes gradient decent an unattractive alternative. …

Crashworthiness Design Optimization Using Surrogate Models, Cheng-Ho Tho Jul 2006

Crashworthiness Design Optimization Using Surrogate Models, Cheng-Ho Tho

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Despite the advances in computer technology, the enormous computational cost associated with the large-scale and complex nonlinear crashworthiness simulations renders it to be impractical to rely exclusively on computer simulations for crashworthiness design optimization. A preferable strategy is to employ the computational efficient surrogate model in lieu of the expensive simulations to facilitate the optimization process and design concept exploration. An added advantage of the surrogate models is that they tends to eliminate the high-frequency numerical noise which may hinder the performance of the direct gradient-based optimization technique by constructing smooth crash responses in the crashworthiness analysis. Even thought the …

Nonlinear Finite Element-Based Investigation Of The Effect Of Bedding Thickness On Underground Pipe, Anupong Kararam Jul 2006

Nonlinear Finite Element-Based Investigation Of The Effect Of Bedding Thickness On Underground Pipe, Anupong Kararam

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

The pipe-soil interaction is studied by using the finite element software, ABAQUS/CAE Version 6.5-1 as a symmetric model of embankment installation to study the effect of bedding property and thickness on pipe-soil interaction with increase in the height of fill. A three-dimensional finite element model (FEM) of the concrete pipe and surrounding soil is developed. The FEM is capable of simulating material, geometric, and contact nonlinearities which employs a nonlinear incremental solution algorithm. Several different element types and mesh size were tested to obtain the optimum converged mesh. These elements were eight-noded linear brick (C3D8R) and six-noded linear triangular prism …

Theoretical Analysis Of Transpiration Cooling Of A Liquid Rocket Thrust Chamber Wall, Philip A. Davis Jul 2006

Theoretical Analysis Of Transpiration Cooling Of A Liquid Rocket Thrust Chamber Wall, Philip A. Davis

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Transpiration cooling is a process that could reduce the overall weight of the cooling system of an actively cooled thrust chamber wall of a liquid rocket engine by up to 50% when compared to other active cooling techniques, increasing the thrust to weight ratio of the rocket engine. In this thesis, mathematical models and computer codes were developed for simulating the flow of a coolant and the transport phenomena in a transpiration cooled thrust chamber wall of a liquid rocket engine by treating the coolant in two ways: as an incompressible fluid and as a compressible fluid in local thermal …

Parameter Estimation Of Spacecraft Fuel Slosh Using Pendulum Analogs, Keith L. Schlee Jul 2006

Parameter Estimation Of Spacecraft Fuel Slosh Using Pendulum Analogs, Keith L. Schlee

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The nutation (wobble) of a spinning spacecraft in the presence of energy dissipation is a well-known problem in dynamics and is of particular concern for space missions. Its rate of growth is characterized by the Nutation Time Constant (NTC). For analytical prediction of the NTC, fuel slosh is often modeled using simple mechanical analogs such as pendulums or rigid rotors coupled to the spacecraft. Identifying model parameter values which adequately represent the sloshing dynamics is the most important step in obtaining a good NTC estimate. Currently, the identification of the model parameters is a laborious trial-and-error process in which the …

Finding The Distribution Of Bridge Lifetime Load Effect By Predictive Likelihood, Colin C. Caprani, E. J. O'Brien Jul 2006

Finding The Distribution Of Bridge Lifetime Load Effect By Predictive Likelihood, Colin C. Caprani, E. J. O'Brien

Conference papers

To assess the safety of an existing bridge, the loads to which it may be subject in its lifetime are required. Statistical analysis is used to extrapolate a sample of load effect values from the simulation period to the required design period. Complex statistical methods are often used and the end result is usually a single value of characteristic load effect. Such a deterministic result is at odds with the underlying stochastic nature of the problem. In this paper, predictive likelihood is shown to be a method by which the distribution of the lifetime extreme load effect may be determined. …

Fuzzy Cognitive Maps For Engineering And Technology Management: What Works In Practice?, Antonie J. Jetter Jul 2006

Fuzzy Cognitive Maps For Engineering And Technology Management: What Works In Practice?, Antonie J. Jetter

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Due to a lack of available data, many early planning decisions in engineering and technology management have to be based on experts' opinions and their qualitative statements about evolving technologies, markets and general business environments. Several authors have suggested the use of fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs) to analytically support these decisions with simulation models that can cope with qualitative information. However, only little practice experience is documented. Based on multiple case studies and an extensive literature review, the paper reviews the state-of-the-art of FCM-practice and introduces a six-step guideline for practitioners and researchers who wish to apply FCMs to real-world …

Web-Based Real-Time Monitoring System To Enhance The Participation Of An Industrial Power System In A Restructured Utility Industry, Shun-Hsien Huang

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The opening of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) grid to wholesale competition began in 1996 that initiated the first stage of deregulation in Texas. In order to relieve generation and transmission constraints, load reduction is considered as a form of available energy and spinning reserve. Afterward, power system becomes more dynamic and creates more opportunities for both electricity suppliers and consumers. Currently, both power supplier and demand consumer can participate in the energy and ancillary services (AS) markets to bid/offer for their energy, capacity, and demand in the ERCOT markets. In order to act as an effective market …

An Emission Model For Lunar Regolith Surfaces Based On Matrix Doubling Method, Darshan Shrestha Jul 2006

An Emission Model For Lunar Regolith Surfaces Based On Matrix Doubling Method, Darshan Shrestha

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

An emission model based on Matrix Doubling Method is implemented for the calculation of emission signatures from the lunar regolith surfaces. The matrix doubling method is used to solve the radiative transfer equations which encompass the volume and surface scattering properties of the medium. The layer and surface are characterized by their corresponding phase matrices which contain adequate information on how the amplitude, phase and polarization of the incident Stokes vector change on being incident in that medium. Emissivity signatures are calculated by solving the transfer equations using matrix doubling method and taking these phase matrices as "boundary conditions". The …

Neural Network Based Decentralized Excitation Control Of Large Scale Power Systems, Wenxin Liu, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Donald C. Wunsch, David A. Cartes, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a neural network (NN) based decentralized excitation controller design for large scale power systems. The proposed controller design considers not only the dynamics of generators but also the algebraic constraints of the power flow equations. The control signals are calculated using only local signals. The transient stability and the coordination of the subsystem controllers can be guaranteed. NNs are used to approximate the unknown/imprecise dynamics of the local power system and the interconnections. All signals in the closed loop system are guaranteed to be uniformly ultimately bounded (UUB). Simulation results with a 3-machine power system demonstrate the …

Cost-Driven Repair Of A Nanowire Crossbar Architecture, Yadunandana Yellambalase, Shanrui Zhang, Minsu Choi, Nohpill Park, Fabrizio Lombardi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The recent development of nanoscale materials and assembly techniques has resulting in the manufacturing of high-density computational systems. These systems consist of nanometer-scale elements and are likely to have many manufacturing imperfections (defects); thus, defect-tolerance is considered as one of the most some algorithms for repairing defective crosspoints in a nanoscale crossbar architecture; furthermore we estimate the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of each algorithm. Also, for a given design and manufacturing environment, we propose a cost-driven method to find a balanced solution by which figures of merit such as area, repair time and reconfiguration cost can be taken into account. Probabilistic …

Steady-Periodic Green’S Functions And Thermal- Measurement Applications In Rectangular Coordinates, Kevin . D. Cole

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Methods of thermal property measurements based on steady-periodic heating are indirect techniques, in which the thermal properties are deduced from a systematic comparison between experimental data and heat-transfer theory. In this paper heat-transfer theory is presented for a variety of two-dimensional geometries applicable to steady-periodic thermal-property techniques. The method of Green’s functions is used to systematically treat rectangles, slabs (two dimensional), and semi-infinite bodies. Several boundary conditions are treated, including convection and boundaries containing a thin, highconductivity film. The family of solutions presented here provides an opportunity for verification of numerical results by the use of distinct, but similar, geometries. …

Order And Disorder, Entropy In Math, Science, Nature And The Arts, Sol Neeman Ph.D., Arie Maharshak

Engineering Studies Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Often, science and engineering students have difficult time in viewing certain concepts in their holistic form. An example for such a concept is the concept of Entropy. Although it originated from the field of thermodynamics, the relation between order and disorder is a profound one and manifests itself in various fields, sometimes unrelated, such as math and science, nature and the arts. In the discipline of physics, the amount of disorder in a system has been quantified by the concept of Entropy. In the area of information theory it provides a quantitative measure of the amount of compression that may …
